F R O M T H E D E S K O F R A B B I R O S E N B AU M
As I write this, many Americans have made tributes to the life and legacy of Senator John McCain, who passed away Saturday, August 25th. There’s not much I can say about his military and political career that hasn’t already been said in the last few days — I can mainly acknowledge that his heroism while serving his country in both war and peace is unassailable. I often disagreed with his positions on policy, but there is no doubt that America was and still is better off for his service.
Rather, I wish to touch upon one admirable aspect of McCain’s life, which relates to our task as Jews over the next few weeks. People often liked to refer to him as a maverick, someone who wasn’t afraid to take positions contrary to public opinion or the will of his party. But to me, what was most “maverick” about him was his periodic willingness to acknowledge his mistakes:
During the 2000 presidential campaign, McCain used an offensive anti-Asian slur to describe the men who tortured him when he was a POW in the Vietnam War. Although his enmity toward his captors never waned, he apologized for using language that was insulting to Asians around the world.
During the same campaign, McCain declined to denounce that the Confederate flag still flew at the South Carolina state capitol, even though he privately opposed it. Regardless of what you feel about that issue, it is admirable that he later expressed regret for letting political expediency hide his true feelings.
In 1983, he voted against making Martin Luther King, Jr., Day a national holiday, likely because the issue was controversial in his home state of Arizona. Twenty-five years later, he said he was wrong, remarking: “We can all be a little late sometimes in doing the right thing.”
These are just a few examples of McCain’s willingness to be self-critical and self-effacing. Cynics among us might claim that he may have apologized at times out of political expedience. But a step in the right direction is still a step worth taking, regardless of the circumstance.
During the first 10 days of the Jewish New Year, we are asked to find within ourselves the fortitude to do what John McCain did so often. The sounds of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah call us to acknowledge past missteps. Over the following seven days, we are asked to apologize to those people we may have hurt during the previous year. And on Yom Kippur, our focus turns to God, as we repent for wrongdoings that perhaps only God knows about.
Maybe cynics among us are tempted to criticize this practice as well, suggesting that apologies made during the 10 Days of Awe only occur because our liturgy tells us that we must do so in order to be written into the Book of Life. They might say that we are apologizing because of our political expediency.
But there are so many people whose relationships have been healed because of apologies made during this time of year, and so many people who have discovered inspiration in their lives because of the words they have said to God during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Even if our apologies come a little late, aren’t they better late than never?
As John McCain put it, we can all be a little late sometimes in doing the right thing.

In Conservative Judaism we are constantly evaluating change. When is tradition sacrosanct and when does change merit consideration? While the fundamentals of our high holiday worship remain firmly in place, you will notice some things are different. We are unequivocal on the beauty of congregants leading services. This year, we will also enjoy the musical talents of a student cantor, Jessica Woolf. Under the able direction of Daphne Hubara, we will be treated to a melody from the Emanu-El singers. What won’t change? For the third year, we are beyond fortunate to welcome Yuriy Bekker back to our Kol Nidre worship. Yuriy needs no introduction. This year, the second day of Rosh Hashanah will not be a repeat of day one. The goal is to make the feeling intimate. We will include our children on the bimah as our student cantor involves them in the service. The sermon will be delivered by Shai Bibas, the Federation’s new shaliach. If it is not your tradition to join us on the second day, give it a try. Finally, I look forward to addressing the congregation on the first day of Rosh Hashanah rather than Kol Nidre which has been our tradition. We received feedback that many congregants felt that the President’s message which includes a financial appeal was inconsistent with the solemnity and introspection of Erev- Yom Kippur. Accordingly, you likely noticed that your Kol Nidre pledge cards are now High Holiday pledge cards. On behalf of the Rabbi, the Board of Trustees and the Ritual Committee, we value your suggestions and hope you see many reflected in this year’s services. After the holidays we will welcome your feedback. Balancing tradition and change is what will continue to make our synagogue ever better. Neil and I wish you a happy and healthy new year. L’shana Tova!

On Sunday, August 5th, our Sisterhood in

her highly acclaimed book "if all the seas were ink."
Our thanks to Rose and Ted Levin for hosting this
popular gathering and to Marilyn Haspel, Bookfest Coordinator, for helping to organize.

Sisterhood, co-sponsored with Jewish Family Services, will host Rabbi Goldscheider, to lead a session on The Wisdom of Judaism on Loss. The session will be held at Nanci & Stuart Kestenbaum’s home
11 Old English Dr., Wespanee Tuesday, September 4th at 6:00PM

Thank you to Lisa Isaac-son for hosting our Au-gust book club in her
lovely Mt Pleasant home. The group had a spirited
discussion reviewing Rachel Kadish’s
“The Weigh t of Ink” a Jewish National Book
Review winner.
NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNINGS As the New Year is upon us, let us think of all the ways we can have new beginnings! Please include in your thinking ways you can make a difference in the world of Conservative Judaism! Sisterhood membership is a great way to begin! We are a wonderful and dynamic group of women meeting the needs of today’s woman and helping her grow to her fullest potential! Sisterhood Emanu-El is part of the family of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Women’s League is a strong support system that has greatly shaped and aided women through innovative programming materials designed to educate, enrich, and empower members of ALL ages and to network with like women across North America and Israel. Please join with us! Your dues help us support the synagogue and school. A special Todah Rabah to Rose and Ted Levin for hosting our August “Pop-Up”, an outstanding explanation of why she wrote her book by the award-winning author, Ilana Kurshan. Hopefully, our Sisterhood will review her book, If All the Sea Were Ink: A Memoir. For our September “Pop-Up”, we are co-sponsoring an event with Charleston Jewish Family Services with Rabbi Goldscheider from Israel, on Coping With Loss: Finding Comfort from Tradition. The event will be held on September 4th at 6:30 at the home of Nanci and Stuart Kestenbaum. Please RSVP to SaraS@Jewish Charleston.org for location information. I hope you will attend. We are looking for additional ideas for “Pop-Up” events throughout the year. Please email your ideas and/or suggested names of potential new/renewed Sisterhood members! My email is [email protected]. If you offer an idea, we won’t put you in charge unless you want to be, which would be great! A couple of ideas floating for programs so far are chocolate-making before Thanksgiving/Hannukah, a film event, a Sip and Paint event, Mah Jongg lessons, a wine event in Summerville and your idea! Don’t miss the fun! For those of you who have children in college, please contact Sandra Perlitz and let her know their names and addresses. Sisterhood would love to send them “care” packages for the holidays. It’s a great way to connect our synagogue and sisterhood to these students and to connect them to their Judaism. Do your child a favor at no cost to you except for a phone call. I am continuing to fill the Sisterhood Board. The following positions are open waiting for you: Membership Chair, Torah Fund Chair, Paid Up Event Chair (you may decide on event), Anniversary Cakes Chair (you don’t have to bake!) and Tri-Sisterhood Chair. We plan to make it a fun year with some learning thrown in. Please join us. On behalf of the officers and board of Sisterhood Emanu-El, I wish you L’Shana Tovah with much health and happiness.

Please join Rabbi Yosef Levanon for a three-week

One Meal a Day
That is what many of our Jewish Brothers are experiencing in the
Abayudayan region of Uganda due to the current famine.
Our Men’s Club is a partner with the Seaboard Region of Jewish Men’s Club
in helping them. The Abayudayan women hand-knit Kippot that many Men’s Clubs are
selling for $18 each and 100% of the money goes to support our Jewish Brothers and Sisters in
Uganda. The money helps with food, education, Hadassah School and maintaining their
Jewish Life. Please support our Tikun Olam project to secure their future.
Thank you for your support.

At weekday minyan I see the names of the people we are remembering - I don’t know them, I can imagine their faces but know they are part of my Jewish family. At Synagogue I see the faces of the children. I don’t know their names, I
can think of what their names may be but know they are part of my Jewish family. I give to the Life and Legacy program
for my Jewish family.

PLEASE CONTACT MIKE MILLS IF YOU’D LIKE TO BE PART OF THE
LIFE AND LEGACY PROGRAM HERE AT EMANU-EL.
We want everyone to be able to participate fully in our services. However, if you are having a difficult time hearing the services or sermons, we welcome you to enjoy the use of our new assistive-listening devices. These small, personal amplification devices comes with a choice of two fashionable listening accessories: 1) The first is an around-the-ear-style headphone fitting on one ear.
2) The other is a "neck loop" designed to work with compatible hearing aid devices with a dedicated t-coil program. As this is a new technology being offered by our Technology Committee to our members and guests, we only have two units of each available, so they will be loaned out on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like to arrange the use of this in advance, please contact our very own Julie Malka, Doctor of Audiology, at [email protected]. Thank you, and we hope that this technology, provided through a generous grant, can help you have a fuller and richer experience at Synagogue Emanu-El.

L’DOOR VA-DOOR Have you moved into a new home?
Do you have doorposts that don’t have mezuzot? It’s considered a mitzvah to hang a mezuzah
(an ornament with a small scroll containing the words of the Shema) on most of our homes’ doorposts.
Rabbi Rosenbaum would be pleased to come to your home to help you hang your mezuzot with proper blessings.
This occasion can be simple and private, or more elaborate if you choose.
Please be in touch with the Rabbi if you’re interested in adding a Jewish flavor to your home.
