Hello Tioga Terrace Neighbors and Friends !

The trees in the Terrace are beautiful right now but snow is on its way! My

favorite holidays are near! So much wonderful food and celebrations with family

and friends! A time to consider all the good in our lives and be thankful for

health, family, friends, and neighbors. In our busy lives, it is so easy to take these

people and blessings for granted. Pause for just a moment, think of these things

and I hope it makes you smile.

The Holiday Season is also a great time to put out a hand to help others who are

less fortunate. Clean out a closet and donate clothes, especially coats, boots, hats,

and gloves. Make a donation to your favorite Food Pantry. Volunteer with your

favorite charity, and my favorite – donate blood – it saves lives ! It is easy to for-

get how much we can help others without spending much time or money. Believe

me, these small acts of kindness are truly appreciated.

Your Friends and Neighbors on the TTCA Board would like to thank you for your

friendship and support in 2016 and look forward to working with you in 2017. In

2016, we expanded our Board to 20 active members working to make the Terrace

an even better place to live.

In addition to the events most of you see, Garage Sale, Halloween Party and Santa

Visits, our volunteers manage your membership dollars, partner with Cub Scouts

Pack 43 to maintain the parks and attend Owego Town Board meetings to cham-

pion our issues. A volunteer takes pictures of special events and 3 volunteers are

now involved in publishing and delivery of our Newsletter four times a year. We

have expanded the use of our website and are considering upgrades to make it

more user friendly. Another volunteer organizes special events like drivers safety

or CPR courses. We support a scholarship every year to a Terrace graduating

Senior. We have 2 enthusiastic volunteers to welcome new Terrace residents, and

we continue the fun tradition of our Holiday Lights Contest. This is all done by a

wonderful group of volunteers who live in and love Tioga Terrace.

We wish you and your loved ones a safe, healthy, and truly beautiful Holiday

Season. May you and yours enjoy a warm and bountiful Thanksgiving, a wonder-

ful Hanukkah or Merry Christmas, filled with love and joy, and the Happiest of

New Years !

ANNOUNCING

TTCA’s

7th Annual

holiday light

contest

Yes, it’s the TTCA’s 7th annual holiday light contest! Crazy how time flies. So it’s time to start thinking about decking the halls and show-ing your holiday spirit once again. As always, this is a great way to brighten your neighborhood, spread the holiday cheer and make our community stand out…..and a little friendly neighborhood competi-tion never hurts. During the two weeks leading up to Christmas, the TTCA will be making the rounds to see who has the most spectacular holiday light displays. The three categories we’ll be judging are: Biggest & Bright-est, Classic Colonial, and Themed. A winner will be chosen from each category and will receive a gift from the TTCA. The winners will also have their house mentioned in the newsletter and will most certainly gain the admiration of all your friends and neighbors. Thanks to everyone participating in this fun event and in helping to make this coming holiday season extra special. Best of luck! By Rodney Cogswell

PLEASE NOTE: Tioga Terrace Civic Association meetings are

held every 2nd Tuesday of the month (except during the months of

July and August), 7 pm, at the Park Terrace Community

Methodist Church, 30 Glann Rd., Apalachin.

All are welcome!

To advertise in the TTCA newsletter, which is published 4 times a year (Spring, Fall, Holiday and Winter), and

goes to almost 800 households, email Diane Donahue at [email protected]. Prices are: business card size $20,

1/4 page $30, 1/2 page $50, full page $100. Checks should be payable to Tioga Terrace Civic Assoc. and sent to

Diane at 3 Rosewood Court. Inclusion is on a 1st come/1st serve basis and as space allows. Payment must be

made prior to acceptance.

The adult/child CPR training course was informative and an excellent way to

learn about the different indications of when and how to apply CPR. We also learned the signs of a heart attack and the difference in symptoms dis-

played by men and women. We had the opportunity to learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine.

I encourage everyone who is able to take a class and become certified. No one knows when an emergency might arise. If you are interested in taking

a TTCA-sponsored class, please contact Jeanet at 625-4711 or email [email protected].

Poor little guy! He just had a very unpleasant “experience” because some-

one didn’t pick up after their dog. Please be a good neighbor and a

responsible pet owner. Don’t subject those in the Terrace to sharing this poor

boy’s woes.

Please pick up after your dog!

Editor’s Note: This column is provided to acquaint you with new members of the Civic Association Board who serve on behalf of all Terrace

residents. In this edition, it’s our pleasure to introduce three individuals who’ve volunteered for key Association vacancies.

MEET YOUR ASSOCIATION by Jennifer Bastian and Jim Sprague

Another addition to our Association’s Board’s roster – Rolf Eschke – is already up to speed in the newly

created position of Newsletter Assistant. As such, he makes sure all 800 copies of our newsletters stay on

the right delivery track for every edition. A Terrace resident for more than 16 years, he’s a man of many

talents…including working at IBM as a Technical Instructor in the field of human/computer interface

design. Since retirement he’s taught seniors how to use computers and Quicken, driver safety courses for

AARP, and for 5 years he resumed a former vocation by serving as pastor of the First Congregational

Church in Newark Valley.

Rolf was born in Chicago and later moved to Germany, but he’s also lived in Minnesota, Belgium, and

eventually Endwell. After 50 years together, his wife June passed away in 2009; his daughter Heidi lives in NYC and his grandson

lives at home. But it seems he’s still very happy about making their move to the Terrace. “I like the people here, and it’s a safe

place to live,” he said. “For more than six months I looked for just the right place, and finally found it here in the Terrace.”

As for motivation to get involved in the TTCA, Rolf explained that he’d been getting our newsletters for years, but decided it was

about time to attend a meeting and find out more about the organization. “I had no intention of joining the Board!” he added.

“But I was amazed at how much work is involved in their many activities, and how well they work together to get things done.

While new to the position of Membership Chair for the TTCA, Keri Barrett has been calling the Terrace home for over 31 years.

A resident of Bowen Lane, she has two sons and three grandchildren and is enjoying retirement with her partner, Terry Dooling.

In fact, they can often be seen walking their beautiful black lab, Daisy. As children, Keri and Terry both grew up in the Queens

area of NYC, but they didn’t know each other at the time.

One thing Keri especially likes about living in the Terrace is the level of concern residents show for their neighbors and surround-

ings. “Tioga Terrace is a great place to raise a family and be a part of,” she added. She also enjoys giving back to her community

in other ways, such as volunteering for a local food pantry and helping to collect items for the Traci’s Hope fundraiser.

Keri was inspired to get involved with the Civic Association due to the caring nature of its members and the innovative ideas they

bring to light. She’s looking forward to serving as Membership Chair and gives great credit to the work of her predecessor, Mary

Place, and others. She intends to keep things running just as smoothly as before, while providing her own inputs to make the

position effective.

Our newest, and first, official TTCA photographer is no stranger to the Terrace. In fact, Jennifer

(Shoemaker) Bastian was born and raised in the Terrace some 30 years ago. A senior staff assistant for

Binghamton University’s Alumni Engagement Office, she grew up on Frederick Drive. Her husband

Kurt, who hails from Seneca Falls, is a special education teacher at Candor Central Schools, where he

also coaches girls’ varsity soccer. They have a 4-month old son, Carter. Her favorite pastimes include

reading, visiting the Finger Lakes region, kayaking, walking the neighborhood with Carter, and (of

course) photography. She also plans to do some writing for the TTCA newsletter.

Jennifer is also no stranger to volunteerism. Her other activities include the Community Foundation for

South Central New York, including its Women’s Fund leadership and special events committees. Among her favorite memories of

Terrace life were the Santa visits and the Halloween parade and party. But even while living away during her college years, she

always made a special point to travel home for the annual Terrace garage sale. “I was drawn to the positive energy of the day, and

reconnecting with all my neighbors!” she explained.

“Tioga Terrace is a very special place. My husband and I feel so blessed to be raising our son in such a safe community,” she says.

Upon reading about the photographer vacancy, she ‘just knew’ this was the right time to get involved in her community.

“Photography is a hobby and a passion of mine and it will be a great way to give back by preserving the new memories we are

creating during our many neighborhood activities and gatherings.” She added, “I’m greatly honored to be serving on the TTCA

Board, along with my incredibly dedicated and caring neighbors who make these events possible for all Terrace families.”

ELECTION OF TTCA OFFICERS FOR 2017

At the December14th, 2016, Association meeting, a nominating committee will present a slate

of officers for next year’s 2017 Executive Committee. These include the positions of President,

Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Many of our current officers have served multiple terms, and we strongly encourage other mem-

bers of the Terrace community to consider volunteering for one of these leadership positions.

If you are interested, please contact Linda Roden, Nominating Committee Chair, at 625-4198 or

Nancy Sydiosky, President, at 238-0276. Job descriptions for each position are available on our

website at www.tiogaterrace.org. On our homepage, under “What We Do”, click on “Civic As-

sociation Constitution By-Laws”. Job descriptions begin on page 3.

While we aren't planning any major changes for the 2017 garage sale, I'm asking the Tioga Terrace com-munity for your help putting up and taking down the 'No Parking' signs which are used on several streets.

As we've seen, these signs really help make traffic safer and easier for everyone.

Sign teams work in pairs: one person driving while the other walks behind. Parent-teenager teams also work well. If you can help with this important task, or have any questions, please call me at 239-3973.

Thanks! Rich Ward, Chairman
