The top 10 things I learned this summer:

#10 The priest is not in charge. If you want to know where the real power in

church lies, call the church office and speak to the parish administrator.

#9 No matter how I am feeling about my sermon, someone will tell me that it is

exactly what he or she needed to hear, and I am thankful for the gift of the Holy

Spirit all over again.

#8 Sunday mornings aren’t as much fun without Louise.

#7 It is not being nosey if asked in the name of pastoral care.

#6 The phone rings a lot more when you are “in charge,” and sometimes with

some very random requests: Do we want to buy radio space to keep kids off

drugs? (Does radio space do that?) Do we want to order a “Jesus and the Real

Apostles” biography DVD for every member of the congregation to enjoy?

(Ummm, no thank you?)

#5 It is really not that hard to lay down a linoleum floor (thank you, Gatekeep-

ers), and if you don’t have the special machine to roll out the air bubbles under the

linoleum, the combined weight of about 10 teenagers will do.

#4 There will never be enough FIGS crisis assistance money, and there are far

too many people struggling to pay their bills in Nash and Edgecombe counties.

#3 When in doubt, pray. When certain, pray some more.

#2 Never, ever, EVER allow your passport to expire.

#1 If not for the good people of the Good Shepherd I would not have learned so

much, or had nearly as much fun as I have had this summer.

class on “Sample Religious Experiences in the

New Testament.” The class will examine how the

early Christians may have experienced Jesus,

God, and spiritual powers. Trying to describe any

experience can be challenging, and even more so

if it is a religious experience, and one from 2,000

years ago. Please join us as Dr. Werline shares

his current research and writing on this fascinat-

ing topic.

Youth Forum -

Life Lessons: a look at

Proverbs and Psalms Sunday, September 19, 26 and

October 10 Have you ever had a song that was your theme

song? A song that expressed perfectly what you

were thinking or feeling or experiencing in a par-

ticular time in your life? The Book of Psalms and

the Book of Proverbs in the Bible are kind-of like

theme songs for us in our lives. We will look at

some proverbs and some psalms and see if they

really can say what we are feeling in our lives

right now. This will be two separate classes: one

for our high school forum group, and another for

our middle school group.

Day School News

August is here and a new school year is fast ap-

proaching. We say goodbye to some while we

usher in new families to our program.

The staff and children have enjoyed tons of sum-

mer fun, which included visits to the Spray n Play

Park for the entire school, while getting very

creative in the classroom with music, art and out-

side activities.

Our school year at Good Shepherd will begin

September 1st. We are looking forward to a great

school year.

Have you heard?

Our brand new baby and older toddler room is

officially open!! Everything is new! If you know

of someone who's in need of childcare, please

refer them to us.

Our Fun Run for Charities check was $1664.22.

Hooray and thanks for your donation!

If available, please stop by to see the Day School

in action. Volunteers are always needed! Storytel-

ling, art activities, music, and cooking activities

with the children are just a few ways to volunteer.

We are flexible!

Enjoy the rest of the summer season!

It has been a busy, exciting and challenging

summer, and I have learned quite a bit, but then

again, I hope I never stop learning. As we learn,

we grow. Growing in our faith means learning

about God through studying the scriptures,

knowing our history, talking about theology, and

reflecting upon our own experiences and encoun-

ters with the sacred, and growing in our faith

means learning more about ourselves.

We have many opportunities for such learning

and growth this fall at the Good Shepherd. Our

Sunday morning Adult Forum will begin with a

visiting professor of religion from Barton Col-

lege, Dr. Rodney Werline, who will be talking

about the faith and learning experiences in the

very early days of the church. The Wonderful

Wednesday program will offer opportunity for

study and fellowship. And the EFM - Education

for Ministry - course that will begin in September

will allow time for those who would like to dive

into deeper theological waters, connecting scrip-

ture, history, and theology with personal experi-

ence.

Faith Quest for our children’s learning will

help to bring alive the stories of scripture with

play and hands-on experience, and our youth will

continue to meet for community and prayer on

Wednesday nights and Tuesday morning break-

fasts, learn about their faith on Sunday mornings,

and have fun with youth group.

Believe, belong, and become, and come learn

with us this fall at Good Shepherd. Welcome

back!

Stephanie

Friends at Good Shepherd,

Have you ever gotten a phone call from God?

In the past months, I’ve had the joy of watching a

very special project unfold. What started as a

mission trip to Africa has blossomed into an ef-

fort to bring hope of a better life to the commu-

nity of Chitambo, a small village in Zambia.

We see God’s blessings each day in so many

ways, but to witness God’s hand nudging and

coaxing so many lives to cross paths toward this

project has been an extraordinary experience for

me.

Today, as a result of a great deal of prayer and

careful research, the Agape Village Foundation

is a realization. Bricks are being made and work

has begun on an orphanage that will house 96

orphans. Immediate plans include digging a well

for desperately needed water, and a community

center is part of the long range focus. In this land

of 12 million where the life expectancy is 38 and

there are 1.2 million orphans, this promises to be

the answer to the prayers of so many.

As fellow parishioners, I ask you to pray for this

project, for those who are involved, and for the

precious children of Zambia. I also hope you will

visit the website to find out more about this en-

deavor.

You may have recently seen an article in the

Telegram that told a bit about the efforts of this

foundation. If you are at all curious about, “the

rest of the story,” please talk to me and I will tell

you just how amazing God’s grace and mercy

have been as he set into motion this project that

brings hope for a better life to the endearing

children of Chitambo.

It all began with a phone call from God…

With love in Christ,

Joan Ashby
