TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — All the ends of the earth will behold the salvation of our God (Isaiah 52:7-10). Psalm — All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God (Psalm 98). Second Reading — God has spoken to us through the Son, the very imprint of God’s being (Hebrews 1:1-6). Gospel — The Word became flesh; from his fullness we have all received grace (John 1:1-18 [1-5, 9-14]).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An old joke asks, “What time is Midnight Mass?” The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Je-sus and his origins. The concept of “midnight” predates clock time, and really has to do with a cele-bration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possi-ble for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as “The Shepherds’ Mass,” and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus’ birth to focus on the key to the day’s celebration: John the Evan-gelist’s majestic theology of Christ’s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monasteries manage the whole round. Pa-rishioners typically take just one entry point into the mys-tery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the com-ing of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season. You still have two weeks to send those Christmas cards before you’re officially late!

THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD—Christmas, December 25, 2016, Year A

THE GIFT OF GOD’S WORD On this day of gifts and gift‑giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God’s Word. Because it is creative, God’s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God’s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the hu-man. Because it is graceful, God’s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy be-tween us and God. At the heart of God’s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God’s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift‑giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. —Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth.

Long lay the world in sin and error pining. Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.

YOU GO, GIRL! According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year (the only members of the deer family, Cervidae, to have females do so). Male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late No-vember to mid-December. Female reindeer, however, retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. They also tend to run sig-nificantly smaller than the male of the species. This means that the “eight tiny reindeer” that pull Santa’s sleigh—from Rudolph to Blitzen—are most likely female. We should've figured this out long ago since it is said that are able to find their way . . .

MUSIC AT SAINT ANDREW We are happy to inform you that Miss Cynthia Weinrich will be returning to Saint Andrew to play the organ and sing for the 11:00 am. Mass on Christmas Day, 12/25, and the 12:10 Masses on The Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, 1/1/17, and the Solemnity of the Epiphany, 1/8/17.

NEW DOORS AT OUR LADY OF VICTORY Three sets of new glass doors were installed at entrance to the church plant and the church itself. Upon my arri-val, several people men-tioned to me something that I had already become aware of, namely, the Church looked like it was closed most of the day. This was primarily due to what had been the main entrance always being dark and closed. With these new doors, people will hopefully realize that our Church is open as it is from 6:45 am to 6:00 pm. Monday-Friday and visit more often. I hope you like them. And doesn’t the new bell system sound great? — Fr. Murphy

OUR CHRISTMAS CONCERT The first Christmas Concert at Our Lady of Victory & St. Andrew was a rousing suc-cess. At least 100 people showed up de-spite the freezing temperatures and were rewarded by hearing the truly beautiful and moving performances by our Canoni Choir and guest musicians. (There was even a harp on the altar that eve-ning!) Attendees were treated to over an hour's worth of classical choral arrangements and traditional Christmas Carols sung by stunning, angelic voices that sounded like (as one person put it) they came straight out of a movie soundtrack. For many, it was just what they needed to get into the Christmas Spirit. Kudos to the Canoni Choir, Choir Director, Don Barnum, and guest organist, Omar Rodriguez! You deserve all the accolades you can get. Please note that they will be heard again at our 5:15 Masses on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, as they are every Saturday at the Vigil Mass. Merry Christmas!
