Technical compounders in Europe - A review of Europe’s 50 largest players Consolidation in the West and new capacities in the East Since last edition of this report, the technical compounding industry has seen some significant changes at the top, with capacities building in Eastern Europe to serve the automotive sector, consolidation of major play- ers in Western Europe and the emergence of Asian groups seeking to build a customer base in Europe. Now available as a pdf, you can find out all about these major changes today. Calendered PP film is a little used process for niche applications such as wall coverings where it offers a potential replacement to PVC film. Blown PP film is mainly used in multilayer structure to enable downgauging. The markets for cast PP film are similar to those for BOPP film so the main use is for food packaging, particularly bakery goods and pasta, labels and general overwrap. PVC free alternatives have been sought but PVC remains the most cost effective solution, satisfying key technical requirements, including its resistance to high temperatures and its transparency, which allows for unimpeded visual inspection of the medical product prior to use, although EVOH shrink film can also be used in this market. In most other countries the volume loss of demand over the five years 2007 to 2012 has been in the order of 10-20%. While market trends have been weak in Western Europe HDPE demand has been growing more substantially in the Central and Eastern European region, averaging increases in demand of 2-3%/year since 2007, compared with a 2.4% decline year-on-year for Western Europe. Central Europe accounted for around 13% of the total European market in 2012. A flurry of buying activity at the start of 2012, as much prompted by concerns over rising prices rather than any real underlying demand growth, quickly fizzled out in the face of the cold spring and the ongoing crisis in the eurozone economies which impacted heavily on building demand, general manufacturing and consumer confidence. Pricing and supply volatility continued to add to the general sense of market nervousness. The market was particularly vulnerable going into the fourth quarter when several unplanned outages at Basell Orlen, Ineos, Total and Borealis combined with another phase of steeply rising prices because of a hike in the ethylene contract for September. It served to further undermine the fragile demand trends and resin sales were particularly weak going into the fourth quarter. There was a definite north-south divide in terms of demand trends with nearly all countries in the Mediterranean region (Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece) continuing to see their markets shrink, while Northern Europe, notably Germany and the UK saw some modest growth of the order of around 1%. The only real brightness to be seen in the European market was in Central and Eastern Europe which continued to be the more consistent performer, with nearly all markets still showing some growth. Poland was one of the few European countries to avoid going into recession during the global financial crisis and the growth in its economy has continued to drive demand across all HDPE end use segments in 2012. Most other Central European economies also saw the market continuing to grow albeit modestly in most cases, although demand was down in Bulgaria and fairly flat or declining in the Baltic States and Slovenia where the small size of their economies made them more vulnerable to external shocks. 2012 was another year of strong price volatility for HDPE resin driven mainly by movements in feedstock prices. Prices rose 20% in the first quarter to hit an all time high of over EUR1,600/tonne (average across the main film, blow and injection moulding grades) by April. It began production of plastic compounds in 1980 and joined the Constab Bernhard Rustige Group in 1995. As result of the Constab masterbatch division sale to the Israeli masterbatch producer Kafrit the Constab and Silon compound activities were merged in 2003 under the umbrella of Silon. Later Kafrit also acquired a share of Silon's holding company, which owns production plants in Canada and China. The group's compound production operations in Europe are now solely located in Planá nad Lužnicí in the Czech Republic. The group is also active in the production of polyester fibre, largely from recycled bottle feedstock, and real estate management. In compounding the company has three areas of activity, namely, classic PP compounds, grafted PE and PP compounds and contractual compounding activities. In 2013 the company produced around 44,000 tonnes of compound in Europe. PE compounds, of which the vast majority were PEX for pipe applications, accounted for almost 65% of the output. The company has recently introduced a range of PE compounds for automotive cables. PP compounds accounted for about 35% of output. The majority of these are sold to the automotive and construction sectors. The company has a small activity in bonding agents which is still rather low in volume but is expected to grow strongly. Silon exports about 85% of its products, holding a strong geographical well-balanced position in Western and Southern Europe, as well as in North Africa. Details of compound production

Taro Plast produces a wide portfolio of technical compounds. Engineering polymers accounted for almost 50% of output in 2009. These include: Taromid® PA 6.6 and PA6, Tarodur® ABS, Tarolon® PC, Tarolux® PBT, Tarolox® PET, Taroblend® PC/ABS, Taroloy®

PC/PBT and Nilsan® ABS. Each brand is available in a variety of grades including glass and mineral fillers, UV stabilised and flame retardant. Production capacity for engineering polymers comprises 10 twin screw lines.

The new TPV compounds are sold under the Taroprene® brand; these are produced on three twin screw lines added between 2010 and 2012.

The company expanded its activity in PP compounds by both the acquisition of Sori S.r.l and by investment in new capacity such that it now has 8 twin screw lines dedicated to PP compounds. The grade portfolio comprises Haiplen® and Nilene® brands which are both available as homopolymer and copolymer grades encompassing mineral filled, elastomer-modified, glass filled and flame retardant options.

Other activities in plastics

Taro Plast has no other activities in plastics processing or selling.

Silon originated as a producer of fibres in the 1950s.

Within the PP film market bi-orientated polypropylene (BOPP) film accounts for the largest share of the market in terms of material consumption, with cast PP film accounting for most of the remainder. More than 80% of BOPP film is used for packaging purposes, often upgraded by metallising and printing. BOPP exhibits superior barrier properties, although there are some developments to improve the properties of cast film through the development of high isotactic polymers. BOPP film is mainly used in food packaging, with significant amounts used to pack dried foods, bakery goods, confectionery, and snack foods. Other end use applications for BOPP film include tobacco overwrap, labels and flower and gift wrap and capacitor film.

Cast PP film accounts for the remainder of the PP consumption for film, with the exception of some small volumes of blown and caldendered film. It is also used for stationery but production in Europe has been declining because of increased imports from Asia.

PVC film use is primarily to be found in food and medical/pharmaceutical packaging applications. Within the area of food packaging PVC is commonly used as a cling film overwrap, particularly within the retail packing and catering industries, however the trend towards centralised packing of meat, which would have previously been packed in-store and the adoption of MAP pack types, has brought about a continual decline in the use of PVC film. An area where PVC film is difficult to substitute is medical device packaging, which has seen some small growth. PVC free alternatives have been sought but PVC remains the most cost effective solution, satisfying key technical requirements, including its resistance to high temperatures and its transparency, which allows for unimpeded visual inspection of the medical product prior to use, although EVOH shrink film can also be used in this market.

European market where demand is on a par with what it had been in 2007.

The market in 2012-2013

The modest recovery HDPE demand made in the period 2010-2011 ground to halt in 2012.

This was matched by an equally rapid drop again in the period May to July which saw

Silon originated as a producer of fibres in the 1950s.

The market in 2012-2013

The modest recovery HDPE demand made in the period 2010-2011 ground to halt in 2012.

This was matched by an equally rapid drop again in the period May to July which saw

Silon originated as a producer of fibres in the 1950s.
