Past Events

15th August, 2017 : The Andhra Pradesh State Center of IEI hoisted the National Flag on the

occasion of 71st Independence Day at our State Center premises. Er. M RS Prakasa Rao, FIE and

Er. M Lingeswara Rao, FIE, Former Chairmen of this center hoisted the flag.Few members, staff and

others participated in the above occasion.

The speaker while delivering his talk with PPT said that Like many of today’s great inventions, the

microwave oven was a by-product of another technology. It was during a radar-related research project

around 1946 that Dr. Percy Spencer, a self-taught engineer with the Raytheon Corporation, noticed

something very unusual. He was testing a new vacuum tube called a magnetron, when he discovered

that the candy bar in his pocket had melted. By late 1946, the Raytheon Company had filed a patent

proposing that microwaves be used to cook food. An oven that heated food using microwave energy was

then placed in a Boston restaurant for testing. At last, in 1947, the first commercial microwave oven hit

the market. In the early 1960’s the domestic microwave ovens were marketed in a mass scale. The first US patent on attempt for exposure

of microwave radiation to minerals, specially for desulphurisation of coal in 1978 by Zavitsanos. Thus a microwave processing is a “material

dependent heating technique”, and hence one need to design system suit for the end applications. This presentation deals with the invention

of microwave energy and its applications in preparation of food for human as well as the experimental results obtained at CSIR IMMT,

Bhubaneswar, using microwave domestic oven and microwave furnace for applications in mineral

processing for enhancing the grinding performance, mineral liberation, mineral phase transformation,

metallization, enhance the purity of ruby for high commercial value etc.,

Lively discussions took place which were answered by the speaker. At the end felicitation was done

to the Speaker by presenting a Shawl, Memento and Bouquet by a group of Corporate Members,

Committee Members and including the Chairman and Hon. Secretary. Finally, vote of thanks was proposed

by Er. GV Srinivasulu, MIE, Hon. Secretary, IEI, AP State Center.

The Key Note Spaker, Er. D Ramakrishna, FIE wihle delivering his speech on this year's theme : Role

of Engineers in a Developing India said that Engineering Definition: Apply mathematics, as well as

scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge, to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain,

research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, processes,

solutions, and organizations.

Engineering is now value centric. Value is defined as ratio of overall benefits & Life time total owner

ship cost. Challenge lies in Identifying, Creating, and Delivering value.

Independence Day

To mark the program started, Jyothi prajwalana and garlanding the portrait of Er. Sreeramulu was

done by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries.

The speaker while delivering his speech elaborately explained

that the Governments alone cannot resolve the housing crisis in the

country. The target of building 17 million houses cannot be met at

the pace of ongoing projects.

He further said that the union Government proposed to build 17 million houses by 2022 and till August,

2017 only 2.4 million houses were approved and actual construction started for only one million

houses.Complex policy and tedious processes led to the Governments missing the targets in the past 60 years, observed Dr. Shah.

Government should ensure the present villages do not become future slums in the capital. As far as the capital of AP, Amaravathi was

chosen by the people in due political and democratic process. It is important to involve people in building the city. The Govt.should ensure

that the stakeholders benefit from what they gave for a larger good. Different Institutions must be spread out by taking local factors and

strengths into consideration and it requires everyone’s support to make Amaravathi, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, a successful one, he

opined.

Consumption chain: Value lies in understanding consumption chain

and accordingly develops solutions as a whole.

Worldwide internet of things (IoT) is driving solutions. Using IoT

one need to monitor and improve 4M (Man, Machine, Method,

and Material). IoT generates huge data, which can be analyzed

using algorithms. Decisions are now data driven in comparisons

with experience based decisions.

Data Driven Decision Making: This has 4 steps

1. Descriptive Analytics: Insights for “What happened”

2. Diagnostic Analytics : Insights for “Why it happened”

3. Predictive Analytics : Insights for “What will happen”

4. Prescriptive Analytics: Insights for “How to make it happened” leading to autonomous solutions.

All together these will lead to System of Systems, where systems will

collaborate with other systems and drive towards Smart Solutions

and Autonomous Solutions.

In this context to develop solution, design thinking principles need to

be implemented to develop solutions.

Modern Engineers need to learn above aspects to build solutions

which create higher value to customers, thus benefit our country.

As a Customary, mementos were presented to the Chief Guest & keynote spaker by Er. D Ramesh Kumar, MIE and Dr. P Ravandra

Babu, FIE respectively. Participation certificates were also distributed by Chief Guest, Keynote Speaker, Chairman, Hon. Secretary & Dr. P
