As Project Manager for the tenant fit-out of Farmland Industries new headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, I coordinated the design of tenant space with Higgins Development, the developer, and Soloman, Cordwell, Buenz & Associates, the base building architect. During construction, I worked directly with Turner Construction Company and the owner’s representatives from Farmland Industries to successfully maintain the budget and schedule for the 60,000 square feet project.

During the design process of the Servery, Employee Café Dining, and Test Kitchen at the new Farmland Industries Headquarters, I managed coordination with a kitchen consultant and compliance with local health code requirements. Design of the Conference Room at the Test Kitchen required additional coordination with an AV consultant to accomodate audio-visual capabilities, which hosted presentations of food preparation.

As part of the architectural team at LSY Architects, I coordinated the design and detailing of the campus perimeter gate houses. Every architectural material of the gate houses and its detailing required continuous scrutiny during all phases of design in consideration of maintaining the highest level of security and the National Institutes of Health’s project budget.

The secure perimeter project at The National Institutes of Health campus required thoughtful planning of the implementation of each perimeter element was completed in phases. The secured perimeter master plan included adjustments to grading, addition of hard- scape and architectural features for fencing, in addition to the series of gate houses at prominent points of entry.

Castle Creek Lodge, a 14,000 square foot private residence in Aspen, Colorado, was designed in the style of the National Park Service lodges. The owners desired a home that would accommodate their love of entertaining in a serene Mountain setting. The residence is sited on axis with Mt. Hayden, a 13,500 majestic peak in the Elk Range. I assisted the Project Manager in design development and construction detailing to integrate a contemporary blend of Western Arts and Crafts with Mountain log construction, including stone and shingles at the exterior, in addition to stained concrete floors and antique pine throughout the interior. Construction completed in 1998 and Castle Creek Lodge was featured in “Another 100 of the World’s Best Houses” published in 2004.

While the client was vacationing in Europe, their home in the community of Laguna Beach, California perished in the raging fires that hit the area in 1993. They decided to rebuild on their existing property. Designing their future home on the existing site presented many challenges including neighbor-hood covenants redefining maximum roof height, preservation of the existing pool, and a 40% grade. In response to the design challenges, the building envelope was terraced in three levels, two tiers of retaining walls were provided, and an application for a roof height variance was approved by Orange County. The final design included a handmade clay tile roof system, custom wrought iron and clear tempered glass railing systems, citarilla screen walls, and a Chef’s kitchen.

The Pacific Star Supper Club served as one of Denver’s premiere nightclubs, including fine cuisine and musical entertainment. An open seating layout was necessary to allow each patron to have a first-row experience. Low-level lighting in the dining area was desired in order to avoid competition with performance lighting at the bandstand. I used AccuRender in conjunction with AutoCad to create the here dimensional rendering.

The proposed Marriott Escondido Hotel and Conference Center is a 196-key full-service hotel located adjacent to the Escondido City Hall and integrated with the Escondido Center for the Performing Arts. The concept of the hotel’s exterior compliments the Art Deco styling of the Performing Arts Complex and Conference Center, which was designed by Architect, Charles Moore. As Development Manager for Sage Hospitality Resources, the hotel operator, I directed the Design Team during each phase of design, including finish, furniture, and equipment selections. I was also the liaison between the Development Team and Marriott to ensure compliance with brand standards or negotiate operator-driven deviations.

The Renaissance Providence Hotel opened in June, 2007 and was developed in partnership between Sage Hospitality Resources and Kimberly Clark Corporation. The renovation of the 1927 historic landmark Masonic Temple resulted in the largest historic restoration project in Rhode Island history into a 274-room luxury Marriott Renaissance hotel with a grand ballroom, restaurant, meeting rooms, and fitness center. As a project manager for Sage Hospitality Resources, I facilitated coordination between Hensel Phelps Construction Company, BBG-BBGM Architects, their consultants, and Forrest Perkins, the Interior Designer.

After a successful and very public hotel opening, I continued project management activities for project close-out including the order and delivery of missing furniture and equipment, ensuring completion of Owner and Marriott brand punch list items, directing subcontractors to complete unfinished construction work, and managing a third party agent to perform HVAC commissioning.

The King Academic and Performing Arts Center at the Auraria Campus in Denver offers a venue and resource center for students from Community College of Denver, Metro State, and University of Colorado at Denver to hone their musical skills. Musician students can practice their performance skills at the 200-seat Recital Hall. I worked closely with an acoustician to design a space responsive to natural acoustics.

The seating at the Recital Hall is sharply raked to allow each audience member the optimum sight line to the stage. The use of various architectural elements including fins at the ceiling, perforated metal at the rear wall, canted stage walls, and shadow boxes at the side walls help in absorption of sound. Catwalks were also designed to provide access to stage lighting.

While at Semple Brown Design, I was Job Captain for The Ellie Caulkins Opera House during design development, construction documentation and construction administration phases. In addition to design collaboration, I managed extensive coordination with MEP consultants, structural engineers, MEP contractors and structural detailers throughout the project.

In designing the interior of The Ellie Caulkins Opera House, a new and contemporary design program had to be carefully devised so that it fit within the existing exterior shell of the Denver Municipal Auditorium, originally completed in 1908. The management of the design and construction required extensive planning and organization as everyone involved with the project recognized that the complex design was like “building a ship in a bottle”.
