After breaking her maiden at Keeneland in April by an impressive seven lengths, she traveled across the country to annex the May 27 Cinderella S. at Hol- lywood, then returned to Kentucky to gut out a neck victory over Chagall (Suc- cessful Appeal) in the GIII Debutante S. at Churchill July 8. Tomorrow, she’ll start in her third state in as many races when she takes on nine other juvenile fillies in the GII Adirondack S. at Saratoga. “She’s a very nice filly with a lot of promise,” said her regular rider, Shaun Bridgmohan. “She’s won on the lead, from off the pace, and she’s already shipped out to California to win a stake. I like her a lot.” Richwoman will be the 122-pound highweight in the Adirondack, which finds Chagall taking another crack at her. An $825,000 FTFFEB purchase earlier this year, Chagall broke her maiden at first asking at Churchill June 16, then narrowly failed as the even-money choice in the Debutante. “She’s trained well since,” said Todd Pletcher, who conditions the filly for Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier and Derrick Smith. “We’re opti- mistic that she’s going to run well.” Wednesday, Saratoga ADIRONDACK S.-GII , $200,000, 2yo, f, 6 1/2f PP HORSE SIRE JOCKEY WT 1 Chagall Successful Appeal Velazquez 118 2 True Addiction Yes It’s True Bravo 118 3 Octave Unbridled’s Song Gomez 118 4 Richwoman Successful Appeal Bridgmohan 122 5 Early Vintage Jump Start Bejarano 118 6 Tora El Corredor Prado 118 7 Expertise Hennessy Santos 118 8 Post Invader Salt Lake Velasquez 120 9 Lemon Drop Girl Lemon Drop Kid Leparoux 118 10 Magical Ride Storm Cat Jara 118 BARBARO GRAZES OUTSIDE In an encouraging sign, Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Barbaro (Dynaformer) has begun brief trips outside to hand graze, some three months after being rushed to the intensive care unit of the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania because of a fractured right hind leg suf- fered in the GI Preakness S. and a month after develop- ing laminitis. “We felt he was ready for a change of scenery, so last week we took him outside to pick his own grass,” said the cen- ter’s chief of surgery, Dr. Dean Richardson, who is shown in pictures hand-graz- ing the bay in grassy areas adjacent to the ICU. “He’s not outside for a long time, but it’s enough to let him enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. While Barbaro is far from out of the woods, Dr. Richardson was up- beat about his condition. “I’m very pleased with his progress,” said Dr. Richardson. “His appe- tite remains strong, he sleeps well, and we continue to moni- tor him closely. According to the proverb, "If the mountain will notcome to Mahomet, Mahomet must go to the moun-tain." It looks as though the owners of Secretariat's

much-traveled daughter L'On Viterecalled this advice in 2002. Thatwas the year Coolmore announcedat the end of the northern hemi-sphere breeding season thatDanehill--for the first time since1990--would not be working a sec-ond shift in Australia. Giant's Cause-way substituted for him.

This caused a problem for L'On Vite, who had beenvirtually married to Danehill since she arrived in Austra-lia at the age of nine, with a 1995 Jade Hunter filly foalat foot. The Danehill--L'On Vite partnership didn't getoff to a good start, as their first foal died, but they thenproduced four daughters over the next five years. Thesecond of these daughters, Milanova, showed Classicpotential early in her three-year-old season, when shetook the Lindsay Park Guineas in September 2002.

Another incentive for maintaining L'On Vite's relation-ship with Danehill was that this pairing was producingfoals bred along similar lines to the Australian starFlying Spur. This Danehill colt, who won the highlyprestigious Golden Slipper S. and two other Group 1events, is out of Fanfreluche's grand-daughter Rolls, whereas L'On Vite is herself a daughter of the cele-brated Fanfreluche. Flying Spur had already becomeAustralia's leading first-crop sire in the 1999-2000season and his excellent Northern-Hemisphere pedigree, coupled with his impressive looks, had led to his shut-tling to the Irish National Stud. Those fast performersMister Links, Osterhase, Steenberg and Firebolt resultedfrom Flying Spur's time in Ireland. L'On Vite duly traveled to Ireland to renew her ac-quaintance with Danehill in 2003, and her journey wasmade all the more fortunate by the fact that Danehillwas to die on May 13. Happily, L'On Vite conceived acolt a few weeks before Danehill's death and that colt,Holy Roman Emperor, continued his rise to the top ofthe two-year-old division when he inflicted the firstdefeat on the Coventry S. winner Hellvelyn in the G1Phoenix S. Sue Magnier's colt is now the winner ofthree of his four starts, and his below-par effort from amoderate draw in the Coventry must now be forgotten.

L'On Vite wasn't to find a permanent home in Ireland. With Danehill dead, she was quickly returned to Austra-lia, where she produced a colt by Danehill's son Rock ofGibraltar in August 2005. She was then barren toEncosta de Lago, but this very successful son of FairyKing is sire of a 2005 filly out of Holy Roman Emperor'ssister Milanova (with this mating producing 5x3 toFanfreluche). Two other sisters of the Phoenix S. winner are beinggiven every chance as broodmares in Australia. Interest-ingly, both Egerszegi and Amies produced 2005 filliesby Elusive Quality, the suspicion being that these mat-ings have been chosen partly because they create 4x3inbreeding to Secretariat. They also produce 4x4x4inbreeding to Northern Dancer, with four lines ofNatalma in the fifth generation. Holy Roman Emperor, though, is inbred 3x3 to Northern Dancer (and 4x4x4 toNatalma) and 3x3 inbreeding also features in the pedi-grees of eight of Danehill's other northern-hemisphereGroup winners, including those of Rock of Gibraltar,Desert King and Horatio Nelson. Desert King and Horatio Nelson were both Group 1winners at two who attempted some type of Derbyglory over a mile and a half at three. Desert King wonthe Irish version, but does Holy Roman Emperor haveany prospects of staying beyond a mile as athree-year-old? Aidan O'Brien says that six furlongssuits the colt well, adding that: "he won't mind goingfurther later on." It is interesting that Holy Roman Emperor's sisterMilanova gained both her stakes successes over a mile, including in the G3 Tokyo City Cup as a four-year-old.However, she was tried at up to 1 9/16 miles at Group1 level, once being beaten only four lengths when sixthin the South Australian Oaks. While she might havefound that distance a bit beyond her, there is no doubtthat she stayed 1¼ miles, as she was second in a pairof Group 1 contests over that distance, once failing byonly a neck to take the Kingston Town S. So, if HolyRoman Emperor is to target one of the Derbys, it willprobably have to be the newly shortened French vari-ety.

L'On Vite headed for Australia after being bought foronly $90,000 by Paul Shanahan at Keeneland's 1995November Sales. She was carrying a Theatrical coltwhich was sent to Japan, where, as Big Viking, he wonat Group 3 level over 1¼ miles and was third in aGroup 2 over 1 9/16 miles. L'On Vite was a steal at less than $100,000. Shecould hardly have had a more impressive pedigree, witha brilliant Triple Crown winner as her sire and a Cana-dian Horse of the Year as her dam. The dam--Fanfreluche--had also earned the title of championthree-year-old filly in the U.S., thanks to her victory inthe Alabama S. over 1¼ miles. Fanfreluche's brotherNight Shift has enjoyed considerable success as a stal-lion and she, too, did outstandingly well as a producer. Two of Fanfreluche's earlier foals by Secretariat wereMedaille d'Or, a champion two-year-old in Canada, andD'Accord, winner of the GII Breeders' Futurity. Herother produce included two other Canadian championsin L'Enjoleur (Horse of the Year) and La Voyageuse. There are numerous stakes winners descending fromFanfreluche, who produced eight daughters. Hergrand-daughter Society Lady is the dam of two BritishGroup winners by Green Desert (another son ofDanehill's sire Danzig), one being the ill-fated championtwo-year-old filly Bint Allayl. Now this cross has come up with another potentialchampion in Holy Roman Emperor, who seems to pos-sess the powers of acceleration one hopes to see in atop-class juvenile.

New York Racing Scene

In a letter to the Ad Hoc Committee on the Future ofRacing, which is currently soliciting bids for the rightto run the NYRA tracks, New York State ComptrollerAlan G. Hevesi called for the committee “to requirepotential Thoroughbred racing franchise holders todemonstrate commitment to ensuring the integrityof racing and wagering in proposals.” A pressrelease from Hevesi’s office read:

State Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi (yesterday)called on the Ad Hoc Committee on the Future ofRacing to supplement its request for proposals (RFP)for future Thoroughbred racing franchise holders torequire respondents to specifically address initiativesintended to ensure the integrity of racing andwagering recommended in 2005 by court-appointedfederal monitor Getnick & Getnick. The monitor, who reported to both Hevesi and the U.S. Attorney, instituted various measures to promote ethicaloperations of New York’s Thoroughbred tracks --Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga--as well asassociated wagering by the current franchise holder, the New York Racing Association (NYRA). “It is clear that the RFP fails to adequately addressthe recommendations of Getnick & Getnick, as wellas the reforms in the operation of New York’sthoroughbred tracks already implemented as a resultof the federal monitorship,” Hevesi wrote in theletter to Committee Chair J. Patrick Barrett. “Theabuses that led to NYRA’s indictment are tooserious, and the reforms that were developed inresponse to those abuses are too important, to beignored in establishing the conditions for the nextfranchise.” For a complete transcript of the letter, click here.
