Waste Costs

• Average 6 yard skip costs £150 to collect

• The value of the material thrown away and resource cost to fill the skip = £1,200!!

• On average, 6 tonnes of waste is produced for each house built, or

• For every 12 houses built, one house is thrown away!!

• For every £100,000 of build cost the contractor spends £3,500 on waste collection

Legislation

Site Waste Management Plans

• Overall objective: to reduce waste sent to landfill and fly tipping

• Legislation set out in the Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act

• Backed up by increased powers and fines for fly-tipping

• DEFRA targeting projects over £300,000 build value

• It will help you by detailing how to comply with relevant legislation and to

identify avoidable costs

• Regulations came into force April 2008

• Industry uptake currently 40-45%

Nine steps to produce a SWMP:

1 – Identify who is responsible

2 – Identify the types and quantities of waste that will be produced

3 – Identify waste management options on and off-site

4 – Identify waste management sites and contractors

5 – Carry out any necessary training of in-house and sub-contract staff

6 – Plan for efficient materials and waste handling

7 – Measure how much waste and what types of waste are produced

8 – Monitor the implementation of the SWMP

9 – Review how the SWMP worked at the end of the project
