ANNUAL SPEECH DAY, 1963.

The Annual Speech Day of St. Andrew's School was held on Tuesday, 30th July,

1963, the last day of the second term. Contrary to usual practice, the ceremony was

conducted in the morning, commencing at 8:30 a.m. when the entire Junior and Senior

Schools were assembled in Adams' Quadrangle, while members of the Continuation School

watched from the first floor. At the appointed time, the Chairman of the Board of Gover

nors: the Very Reverend E. 0. Sheild, Mrs. Sheild, the Guests of Honour: Mr. and Mrs. J. Le Cain, Bishop Stephen Neill ( a visiting New Zealand Bishop), the President of the Old

Boys' Association: Mr. Henry Loo, the Principals and Senior Assistants proceeded to the

dais in the Quadrangle.

The ceremony began with the school hymn, after which came the opening prayer.

The Very Reverend Sheild, as Chairman of the Board of Governors, then delivered his open

ing speech, informing us that in the absence of the Warden, Mr. Tan Lye Whatt, who

was away on study-leave prior to his retirement, the Principal of the Junior School, Mr.

Goh Soo Toon, would present the annual report on the life of the school since the last

speech day. Reverend Sheild remarked that this was a fitting occasion to recognise Mr.

Goh's commendable performance in the past, as the latter was also shortly to retire.

In presenting his report, Mr. Goh gave a thorough account which touched on the

scholastic and extra-mural activities of the Junior, Senior and Continuation Schools. The

School then sang the hymn specially chosen for the occasion, following which, the Guest of

Honour, Mr. J. Le Cain, Acting Commissioner of Police, delivered his speech. He said that

in looking upon the sea of faces before him, he recalled his younger days as a student of

the school. The Guest of Honour spoke of his personal experiences as a former pupil

and encouraged the students to make full use of their life in school. This greatly endeared

him to the audience, which responded appropriately.

After Mr. Le Cain's speech came the long-awaited moment when Mrs. Le Cain

presented the prizes to the successful students of the school in the final term examinations

of the preceding year.

The school song was next sung in its usual enthusiastic manner. Bishop Stephen

Neill then gave the blessing and delivered the closing prayer. The ceremony concluded

with the State Anthem after which the guests and teachers proceeded to the Magna Aula

for refreshments.

THE SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT.

In the absence of our Warden, Mr. Tan Lye Whatt, on study leave, it is my duty to welcome you here today and to present my report on the :::>chool for the past year. This is the 101st year since thl' School was founded, ttte 11rst of our second hundred.

WP are now in the last stages of the expansion which our Board of Governors started when they added the top storey to our bu1ld1ngs in 1952. Since then we have added the new St. Andrew's House with places for 60 hoarders; the nevv· Tuckshop; the new Chapel, with seats for up to 350 persons; the Kindergarten, carrying 100 children; and the new Science block, with three large laboratories, four classrooms and two workshops, for Woodwork and Metalwork. Altogether, our Building Fund has raised approximately $400,000 since it was begun in 1950; and currently it has opened an appeal for a further $150,000/-.

This building expansion has provided places for an increase of 100% over our 1950 enrolment. We have today a total of nearly 2,400 students in our four schools in these buildings; within the next two years we shall add a further four classes in the Secondary/ Pre-University section; and the Board of Governors has called for plans to expand the Continuation School to provide education, including Commercial subjects, up to Sec. 4 level. W c cannot yet say what the final expansion of the Continuation School may be, because we cannot know if staff will be available. The maximum possible expansion might be to a total of 3,000 here at St. Andrew's.

All this expansion, whether achieved or planned, depends on staff. In the Junior Schools, we have lost Mrs. A. S. Paul, on retirement after 16 years faithful service. We have also to record with much regret the sad death of Madam Loh Kui Ying, Chinese language teacher in Junior II. Mr. Robert Chcok has gone on transfer to the Senior School, as Malay language specialist. We have recruited Mr. Wong Shin Chee, Mr. Thomas Goon Sam Kim, and we have Mr. Quahc Beng Chuan on transfer from the Senior School as Principal Designate, taking over from me on September 1st. Four teachers .:ire going through their training courses, Mr. Stanley Wong in 3rd year; Mr. Teo Chew Theng in 2nd year; Mr. Siew Dare and Wong Shin Chee in 1st year. Miss Scow Cheng Suat gained her Certificate in Education last Decem bcr.

In the Continuation School we have now a more firm staffing situation than we have enjoyed for some years. We have been joined by Messrs. Marcel Hostan Paul, Sunny Tan Swee Hock, Peter Lim Beng Swee, Soh Yew Hock, Wong Cheok Wan and Gan Hock Hye, replacing a number of more or less temporary teachers.

In the Senior School, we this year had an expansion of four classes with a consequent need to find additional staff; we have also lost Miss M. Vanderput, on transfer to the Polytechnic, and Mr. Quahe to be Principal designate in the Junior School. Our Principal, the Warden, Mr. Tan Lye Whatt, is away until the end of October on study leave. He retires at the end of the year, when Mr. Francis Thomas will take his place. We are also going to lose our valued Chemistry teacher an Old Boy, Mr. Kan Yew Kok, who has been offered a most advantageous post at the Polytechnic. We have recruited 3 Old Boys -Mr. Robert Cheok from the Junior School; Mr. James Wong, with a B.A. degree fron1 Sydney, Australia; and Mr. Teo Chin Chye, to teach Art. We also have another Old Boy, Mr. Harry Tan Ho Swee, at present on loan to Government, but due to rejoin us at the end of this year. We have also welcomed Mrs. Annabelle Jesuthasan B.A. U of Singapore whose husband the Rev. Sam Jesuthasan is Principal Assistant to the Dean, our Chairman, at the Cathedral; Mr. Tan Wee Kiat and Miss Daisy Song, both Honours graduates of University of Singapore and Mr. C. Kurnarasingam, a qualified teacher. A further 7 teachers have passed through our staff during this year, most of them graduates. We have at the time of this report 3 vacancies to fill immediately, and we shall have a considerable amount of further recruiting to do to meet the expansion needs of 1964.

These staffing difficulties must cause great anxiety to those who care for the welfare of our School, and we have had to consider most seriously whether we ought to slow down our planned expansion until we can be sure of getting and keeping our full quota. We have

The Annual General Meeting was held early this year and the following were elected office bearers for 1963.

Numerous excursions were arranged to study local landscapes and features as well as establishments of geographical interest. Early in the year members from the Pre U II Arts went on excursions to the Whampoa swamps, Potong Pasir and a sawmill factory along Scrangoon Road. Educational tours were undertaken to the Meteorogical Station and the Singapore Harbour Board. We were very fortunate in having Mr. Tan Tuan Kok, a local graduate and an old boy of the school, to bring u::; on a survey of the area round Mt. Faber.

Among the places visited by members from the Pre U I classes were a pineapple factory and the Metal Box Co.

Towards the end of the second term we invited Mr. A. M. Cherian of the Shell Company to give us a talk and a series of film shows on the production of oil. Owing to the enthusiasm of the members he made a second trip here from Pulau Bukom during which he showed us films on soil erosion and river capture. The knowledge we gained was extremely beneficial.

There was also another interesting and highly amusing talk given by a hiker Mr. Mohsin. He spoke of his travels round the world.

In one of the Geographical Quizzes held at Bartley Secondary School, our representatives, Lawrence Chan and Chang Yang How managed to secure a third place notwithstanding the fact that there was a poor attendance of supporters from the school.

We hope the society will continue to flourish and I am sure the standard of geography will be promoted still higher with the constant help and encouragement given by Mrs. Cheong, our adviser.

A series of three lectures on Social Work was conducted by Mrs. D. Marshall in early June. The attendance was fair, and those who attended received a deeper insight into social work. Mrs. Marshall dealt with the problems of social work, the qualities of a social worker and the methods of undertaking cases. The Group is very grateful to Mrs. Marshall for her talks.

GENERAL The willing assistance of our Advisers - Mr. F. Thomas, Mrs. L. M. George and

Mr. A. Coxon - must not pass unnoticed. The Group wishes to thank them for their invaluable help and advice, and the encouragement they have given to our projects. Witout them, we would have been lost.

The energetic work of Ng Tow Liang and Ong Teck Yen in helping with the organisation of the Group should also be noted.

Though the Group is only in its infancy, the activities of the year show that it can be of service to the less fortunate. The joy of helping others is a personal experience - it is something difficult to express in words. There are many opportunities for youth to help in society and the Social Work Group is one of these. The future of this Group depends 011 the devotion and energy of the younger students, and it is the sincere hope of the senior members that many will come forward to take the challenge to keep the Social Work Group alive through the years ahead. FILM AND CAMERA CLUB.

The year 1963 saw the ninth year of the club's existence. At the Annual General Meeting the following officials were elected:

President:

Vice-President:

Hon. Secretary:

Committee Members:

Hon. Adviser:

William Tan Bee Kok

Matthew Lim

Stephen Sim

Benjamin Ho Kian Chye Philip Chua

Mr. Yee Teck Peng

The club has always played its part well in the life of the school, owing to the cooperation and enthusiasm of its members.

We were not discouraged when our darkroom was taken from us temporarily, to serve as a store room pending the completion of the new Science Block.

At the beginning of the year we had a membership of sixty. Several outings were organised with great success. Apart from these outings we also screened a few educational films, loaned from the U.S.l.S. The overwhelming response was most gratifying. A library was set up primarily for the members' benefit, but it did not prove very successful since it was not put into full use. We hope that this will be remedied soon.

We are proud to announce that the club has won the 'Chopra Trophy' for the school in the Inter-School Photographic Competition organised by Raffles Institution. Three of our members participated and under the judges' careful observation their prints were considered to be the best. Our President submitted a total of six prints, one of which won the first prize. The other five won consolation prizes. Two other consolation prize-winners were Benjamin Ho and Lawrence Tan. We are proud of them and congratulate them for their fine efforts.

At present the club is functioning quite well through the diligence of the officials, especially the adviser Mr. Yee, and the cooperation of our members. However we are looking forward to next year when we will have better facilities and equipment. We hope then to plan more varied and interesting activities for our members so that true to our school's motto we will always go 'Up and On'.

ST. JOHN'S AMBULANCE CADET CORPS.

Superintendent: Mr. Lim Wee Poh

Division Offic~r: Mr. Loke Wai Wah

The session for 1963 commenced on the 19th January, with a Corps meeting in school. Many former members were present, and together with their newly-appointed superintendent, they formally welcomed the thirty new members to the corps. From then on, the Corps has had a busy year with weekly meetings on Saturdays at school.

This year, owing to the member's conscientious and enthusiatic leader, we attained a near-perfect attendance record and maintair ed a strong division.

Weekly lectures were conducted by our fullyqualificd Superintendent, and most of our members passed the recent first-aid examination. The regular two-hour meetings starts with a roll-call and an hour long lecture on first-aid. The remaining hour is spent on footdrills, stretcher-drill and games. Needless to say, picnics, hikes, and excursions and camps are orga111zed to meet the overwhelming demand of the rank and file.

Last year, a tea-party was held, at which our principal, Mr. Tan Lye Whatt, presented awards for the outstanding members of the corps.

To make St. John's a more interesting movement, the corps has been divided into 2 groups, and competitions were held. Points were given to the more active and outstanding group.

With fun and laughter, we also have assiduous tasks. The corps has been on duty at various sports functions in the school itself and has also organized a first-aid post at the cross-country race at Sang Nila Utama School. There, we had an arduous time practicing what we had learnt.

Numerous parades were organised by the St. John's Headquarters and our members turned up in full force. The most notable parade was the Annual Parade held at Jalan Besar Stadium, and we were strongly represrnted by our keen members.

In the recent first-aiu' examination almost all members passed with flying colours. The following were promoted to the respective posts:-

Sergeants: Lim Th11an Kiang & Ooh Cheow Siang.

Corporals: Lim Chan Choon & Ooh Say Pin.

Lance Corporals: Tan Ann Kok & Lim Syu Seng.

We are indebted to Canon R.K.S. Adams for introducing the Corps into our Schoo_l and fostering its growth since its formation on 12th Feb. 1955. The former Division of 33 members was trained under the able leadership of the late Mr. S. K. Bandara.

Please help us to help you.

The Scout Troop has expanded tremendously this year and now consists 15 Seniors, 40 Scouts and 25 Cubs making a total of Eighty.

At present we have the School Captain Chow Soon Cheong as the only Queen Scout left in the troop, but by the time this report 1s published, we hope to see Stephen Titus achieve his Queen's Badge and Neo Kay Hong his Scout Chord. To the other scouts I urge them to follow the footsteps of these scouts.

When the second term started this year, we lost the services of Toh Seek Hwee who has gone over to the Malayan University to further his studies. We wish him all the best. In his place we have Reginald Lee as Assistant Scoutmaster.

Although our S. M. (S). Ang Poon Tiat can hardly spare the time off his University studies, we still find him leading our Seniors. 1 •• ..: troop is much indebted to him for his services.

This year we got off to a good start by holding a camp during the April holidays at our usual camp site at Pasir Ris. Although the camp was meant for Patrol Leaders and Seconds only, the response was so good that some of the other boys were allowed to attend this Training cum pleasure camp.

As usual the call for duties started pouring in after the April holidays, and the troop rendered their services to whoever needed them. Duties included school sports, fun fairs, swimming carnivals besides others.

Individual patrols went on hikes and week-end camps led by the Patrol Leaders and on one occasion G. S. M. Ong Chong Hai led us in the assault of Bukit Timah Hill.

The usual troop camp in August was not held this year, a break from the annual routine, because of the job week coming in at this time leaving the boys as well as the scouters unable tofind suitable time in between these three weeks of holidays to go camping. It is hoped that the camp will be held in December.

Because the job week fell in August, we were not able to spend as much time in preparing for it as we did last year. Nevertheless we shall endeavour to topple last year's figure and remain the troop with the highest tally in our district. This has always been our pride for the past few years and I cannot find a better way of ending this report than by urging the younger set of boys to work hard and play hard and always keep in mind Lord Baden Powell's motto, "Be Prepared".

Of the seven members four of them Tek Tin, Roger Albrecht, Yong Chua and John obtained the Queen Scout award in 1959, 1961, 1962 and 1963 respectively. Roger Krempl and John Lang were awarded the Scout Cord which is the highest award for scouts below the age of fifteen. Three of the members are holders of the Bronze Medallion of the Royal Life Saving Society.

Amongst its activities, the Patrol explored the islands of Blakang Mati, Pulau Brani and other neighbouring islands. Members also made a study of Terbrau and Kota Tinggi. Pioneering is one of the Patrol's favourite pastimes. The forty - foot bridge constructed across the Kallang River, in 1961, was one of the Patrol's Pioneering projects. Camps were frequent and enjoyable. In April 1963 three of our members scaled Mt. Ophir, the highest mountain in Southern Malaya.

Tek Tin, Heng Kok, and Say Peng are now Rovers in the 128th Kallang District Crew, Tek Tin is within a stone's throw to the highest award in Rovering - the Baden Powell Award.

Yong Chua is actively engaged in training acouts of the 152nd Troop. Under his patience and guidance many will find scouting an enjoyable and useful pastime.

Roger Albrecht is continuing his studies in England. He was our representative at the World Jamboree in Greece this year.

Roger Krempl and John are still in the 10th Aquila and trust that they will keep the flag of the 10th Singapore flying.

Patrol Leader Tan Tek Tin has been a ~A urce of inspiration to the rest of the Patrol. This enabled all of us to strive through even the most bitter and difficult hurdles in our Scouting life.

If all goes well, the Sir Walter Raleigh will tour Malaya and Bangkok during the December vacation.

Mr. Koh Kwee Long

Miss Ng Eng Teck

The 10th Group consists of a Cub Pack; a Scout Troop-Pegasus; and a Senior Troop-Aquila. These different sections enable youths of various ages to enjoy scouting.

The Cub Pack is run efficiently by the Akela. Under her watchful eye, twenty five cubs have rooted their interest in cubbing, striving hard to attain their first-star. The results of the Job Week in August clearly exibit this fact. A total sum of about $150 was collected. The picnic held during the August holidays will further add to the interest of

the emerging youth.

The scouts in the Pegasus Troop have had an interesting year. Although there are only three patrols, these are well managed. The Troop is under the careful supervision of Mr. Koh Kwee Long. The activities of the year include pioneering, cooking, competition in scout-craft, and camping. They held successful meetings with other troops and a training camp in August. An outstanding award in the near future will be the award of the Scout Cord to Roy Joseph and Lim Thiam Poh.

The Senior Scouts of the 10th Aquila had to manage without a Scouter. This was a challenge to each one of us to be resourceful and independent, so that we will become efficient leaders of the troop and later of our society. The activities were many and to mention only a few, we had overnight cycling trips, visits to the Southern Islands, barbecues, training camps, visits to convalesce11t .. _,1i1.:~ and selling of flags.

Some of our Seniors are holders of the Bronze Medallion of the Royal Life Saving Society. The most outstanding award was the award of the Queen Scout badge to Joi,1, Lang at the Investiture Ceremony held on 14th Sept., 1963 at Jubilee Camp-Site. It was indeed a grand occasion during which six First Class Senior Scouts also received scouting names. They are Goh Yong Chua, Roger Krempl, Seah Hock Hai, Johnny Chew and S<.:t.;

Wing Hong and John Lang.

Roger Krempl could easily have obtained his Queen Scout award had it not been for his commitments in hockey and cricket. He had been nine years in the 10th and he will never regret having remained in the movement for such a long peroid. He leaves at the end of the year, having completed his full course in St. Andrew's School. We wish him

good luck and God-speed in his career.

Miss Tan Lian Nco

Once again Hose House has proved itself to be one of the leading houses on the sports-field. We owe this success to the able leaders - the House Captain, Vice Captain and the members of the Hose House. However, we must not forget the encouragement and advice of our House Master Mr. Emmanuel, without whose help we would not be able to have such an out-standing success. Because of the enthusiasm and interest of our boys we managed to uphold one of the leading positions in the sports-field.

In the Inter-House Tournaments, we won the soccer championships from Romanis House. We also emerged the inevitable winners in the hockey and table-tennis tournaments. In the badminton championships we were runners-up to Loyfatt House. We were, however, placed third in the Cross-country race. In spite of the results we managed to put up a magnificent show and proved our ability in maintaining a high standard of sportsmanship. We heartily congratulate the winners of this event and thank them for giving us a good game. The results of the swimming and chess championships were very poor. However, we will try our very best at the next championship. I appeal to our boys and girls to show more interest and take an active part in these activities.

In the Annual Athletic Meet, we were nlacecl fourth, losing to Loyfatt by a very narrow margin. In the Tug-of-War, we pulled our way to victory. We always excelled in this event and have again proved our strength and teamwork. We were at our prime in the boxing tournament in which we were unbeaten and unequalled. We are proud of Jimmy Khoo and Ng Geok Khim and especially Chua Wee Seng, who was judged the best boxer of 1963.

We are fast climbing to the top position in the sports-field and it is the duty of every boy and girl in the Hose House to achieve this goal i11 the years ahead.

RUGBY REPORT.

Mr. Yee Teck Peng Mr. J. Ferguson Sng Eng Khim Loke Wai Wah

The rugby season commenced in June and with the regular and methodical training by Mr. Ferguson and Mr. Yee, the school has so far maintained an unbeaten record among local schools. The only defeat was by Zahira College of Ceylon (5-10) and this game was played after a lapse of five weeks of non competitive rugger. It is indeed regrettable that many schools will not play against us unless they 'have to' in tournament.

At the beginning of the season, we looked forward to being the first winner of the Premier League ( champion school of each district competing for the Champion School of Singapore). As the season progressed, there were ample signs of this (We won the Serangoon District tournament without much opposition). Owing to the bad timing of this tournament, which is held so close to the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate examinations and bearing the fare of the players in mind, it is withgreat pain and regret that the school will not be competing in the tournament. We hope that the authorities concerned will bear this in mind in arranging future tournaments.

In the 7-a-side Inter District tournament, Serangoon District not only again won the Championship, but also captured the runner's-up title. The school fielded the whole winning team and five of the players in the runners-up team. With the Serangoon District achieve a double by being the Inter District and Junior titles. A fine achievement indeed.

The school 1st XV is mainly made up of the following:- Sng Eng Khim (Capt.), Sng Eng Chua, Tan Peng Yang, Anthony Seow, Loke Wai Wah, E. Thomas, Lim Kok Thye, Edward Silas, Victor Lam, Sim Jin Meng, Ng Geoh Khim, Lawerence Chan, Leow Aik Leng, G. Thomas, Richard Oh and John Ferguson Jr.

In the 2nd and Junior XV's, the players displayed a high standard of play and following the tradition of the 1st XV players, they always play an attacking game.

At the end of this year, we may tour the Federation of Malaya and we hope that when called upon to raise the necessary fund, the Old Boy's and well-wishes will response to it.

The score board is as follows:- 1st XV played 8 games, won 7 and lost 1, scoring 287 against 32 points; 2nd XV played and won 2 games scoring 91 against 3; and the juniors played 3 games losing 1, scoring 47 against 12 points.

Soccer Master Mr. Anthony fhomas Captain Johnny Sim Jui Meng Vice-Captain - Edward Silas Hon. Secretary Lawrence Teo

Our soccer training started as soon as school re-opened this year. Most of last year's players had left us and we had to train hard to replace them. Special thanks go to Mr. Thomas. our soccer master, for the keeness he showed in this game and the efforts he made to raise our standard. Here I would also like to thank Corporal Borthwick, a qualified physical instructor from R.A.F. Changi, for coming to coach our boys.

The inter-house tournament was successfully held. It was played on a ueague basis and Hose house emerged champions by winning all their matches with Venn House as runners-up. In the Serangoon District Games our school team did not fare too well, due to the fact that the team was mostly made up of new players although the Saints played hard and well in most of our matches. The spirit of our Saints was to play, not always to win but to learn more about the finer points of the game. Congratulations to Victor Lam for being selected to represent Combined Schools and also to Johnny Sim and Edward Silas for representing Serangoon District.

Most of our players are young and the future of our school soccer team looks bright, and our Saints will always try hard and play hard to live up to the school's motto -'Up and On'.

The Saint Andrew's Netboll Team was first formed this year with the enthusiasm of

Mr. Kiong Woon Kew and the players. Although unable to meet regularly for practices,

the team was able to achieve something commendable. In the District Championships, we

trounced five of the six teams we encountered finally emerging as runners-up. In two

friendly matches that we pl2yed our team proved superior to our opposing teams. Two of our players, Juliet Koh and Annie Hsu were chosen to be in the District team.

All our league matches were well attended by highly enthusiastic supporters from

the school, who gave the players that extra bit of spirit and inspiration, especially from the

Saints' Rugger team. With continual encougragement we hope that the fine stanuard of

netball playing will continue in the years to come.

Here are the results of the matches played so far:

At the beginning of the year our prospects did not seem too bright as most of last year's 'star' players had left school and a new team had to be built. Practice sessions began early in the first term and were well attended throughout. We were fortunate to have Mr. Gurucharan Singh, an old boy of the school, to coach us for a few weeks before he had to leave to continue his studies. After this we were without a coach but owing to the strong foundation laid by Mr. G. Singh improvement was rapid and when the season arrived we had a fairly strong team ready.

The school team for the year was: R. Krempl, M. Harris, Lio Teng Poh, R. Lee, J. Arokiasamy, B. Leicester, J. Ross, V. Lam, L. Seow, H. Oehlers, Mathew Lin and V. Gopal. The last five named being new to the team.

ST. ANDREW'S JUNIOR SCHOOL I LIBRARY.

The need for a small room where boys can sit in comfort and read their favourite ::>0oks has been realised this year. An additional hundred books have been added to the 1.brary. The boys in the A stream have been making good and profitable use of the books but the boys in the other two streams, B and C, are encouraged to read more often. Throughout the year, the Pr. 6A boys have been helping me in the library work and I like them to know that they have been doing a good job of it. Here's a little message to our boys. If you have old story books which you no longer want to read, do give them to the library so that boys can have the opportunity of reading them and I am sure they will be grateful to you. The library still has room for expansion in the future.

THE LIFE BOYS.

St. Andrew's Junior School I & II.

LOW KIN LEONG,

Teacher-in-charge.

The Seventh Singapore Team of The Life Boys attached to St. Andrew's Junior School began its eighth session in the beginning of the year with a leader-in-charge, three leaders and twenty-four boys.

The team was divided into three squads of about fourteen boys each, under the leadership of Leading-Life Boys, Quek Yong Kwang, Goh Chin Piu and Seah Kee Howe and in the care of Mrs. Liow, Mrs. Lim and Mrs. Soo respectively.

The early part of the year were joyful occasions for the team, especially for our leaJers. Our hearty congratulations go to the former Miss June Chan on her marriage to Mr. Roland Lim. Also our best wishes to Mrs. Soo on the birth of her baby, Soo Khian Teck and Mrs. Liow on the birth of her baby, Liow Ming Choo.

All the three leaders, Mrs. Soo Soo Twan, Mrs. Lily Liow and Mrs. June Lim continue to render faithful service to the team, in spite of family committments.

An enjoyable hike at MacRitchie Reservoir was held at the end of the first term - it was an experience the boys will always re-member.

At the Annual Sports, the Team almost emerge champions but unfortunately we were once again second to the 2nd Team. Congratulations, once more to the winners!

The Team continues to hold its weekly meetings on every Friday. The team's acting Chaplain, Mr. Adam Coxon takes much interest in the boys and conducts the opening services on these days. On Sundays the boys attend Sunday School at their own churches.

As the team continues to grow, we trust and pray that the object of The Life Boys shall always be foremost in our minds - "the advancement of Christ's kingdom among young boys".

In concluding this report, I would like once again to take this opportunity to thank all parents and friends for the keen interest they have shown in the Team and for their welcomed support, especially our 'head' Mr. Goh Soo Toon and his deputies, Mr. Ong Hood Chye and Mrs. Elizabeth Choy.

ST. ANDREW'S JUNIOR SCHOOL (ATHLETICS)

The year 1963 has been quite a successful season for St. Andrew's Junior School as far as Athletics are concerned.

In the MacNair District Athletic Meet held at the Balestier School ground, we became runners up and 'A' Division Champion.

The School Table-Tennis team comprising of Lee Chan Shaw, Gwee Chong Ho, Chen Ton Min, Allan Teo and Donald Seah became the District Champions by beating the

'Whampoe School' in the final.

Our School also participated in the Inter-School Invitation Relay Races. Though we were not placed, we gave the opponents a hard fight.

Our English Combined Annual Athletic Sports was held on Friday, 24th May, in perfect weather at Woodsville. On that day our young and up coming competitors gave a grand display of keen competition, and provided the crowd with many thrilling performances. Though not many records were established, the year's general standard of Athletics has greatly improved. John Stevens of "Orange"House dominated the day with his fine performances. This year also saw the introduction of the metric system. for the

first time in our school.

The Inter House competitions proved to be of great interest. Special mention must be made of the 'Red House' Junior I who won the Inter House Championship scoring 63 points. The House owes a debt of gratitude to its very hard working Athletics Master, whose valuable services helped her to gain high reputation in Athletics.

Our thanks go to all donors of prizes, to the officials for the smooth running of all events, the House Masters and their assistants for their hard work and last but not the

least to Mrs. L. Albrecht for giving away the prizes.

We cannot but mention the work of our popular President Mr. Goh Soo Toon who will soon be leaving us for a well earned rest. He has been connected with the school for 36 years and has been President of the Sports Meet since the beginning of our Junior School Sports. We greatly value and appreciate the encouragement and advice he has always given us not only in Athletics but in all branches of Sports. He has our best wishes and we earnestly hope to see him again in our midst with suggestions, and advice

in the near future.
