Why Andy Capp?

Andy Capp represents the alter ego of many of us and of many generations who over the years havefollowed and laughed at his scenes of “everyday life” thanks to the Daily Mirror.

Andy Capp is not one to pay any attention to social airs and graces. To be perfectly honest, he wouldn’tgive us the time of day. But he’s one of the cartoon characters which are best loved - and best hated- by femminists and bourgeois alike, past and the present. But whether you love him or hate him, he isone of those everygreen characters that over the years will continue to make people smile, entertainor scandalise because of his total lack of any saving graces; but he will continue to make people stopand think a minute about how close his world is to the real one.

. Beer, a game of darts or snooker, football,“girls”, betting and loafing around on the

sofa with a fag hanginig from his lips: that’s what Andy wants and manages to get during

the course of his day.

And often, by having the final say or intepreting the other’s last wisecrack as ajoke, both of them seem to

deliver asides tothe reader in search ofunderstanding and support.

Because we actually know that kind of person well.

His mother-in-law: the one no-one would want to have. A nosey-parker,malicious, always critical of “poor” Andy who gets his own back byresponding to her taunts with the same amount of viciousness.N.B: No-one has ever seen her face or knows what’s she’s called.

Jack (or Jackie): the landlord of Andy and Flo’s “local”. In many stripsit’s him that has the last say by commenting on the goings-on in his pub.Often it’s about Andy being told where to “get off” by some good-lookinggirl.Chalkie e Rube: the Capps’ neighbours. The couple are similar to Andyand Flo. Even if they don’t seem to be permanently in the throes of acrisis, the two men share the same hobbies and the women are alwayscomplaining about their marriages across the garden fence.

Percy: perhaps the only person who can be considered an “enemy” ofAndy’s, as he is the referee in the football matches (from which Andy isalmost always sent off). But above all he is the Capps’ rent collector andthe rent is always strictly late.

The Vicar: the minister at Andy’s parish church. He does his best tobring Andy back on the straight and narrow by trying to make him stopdrinking and salvage their stormy marriage.

Reginald Smyth, alias Reg Smythe, was bornof a working class family in Hartlepool,England, on 10 July 1917. After seeing activeservice during the second World War, almostby chance and in his spare time he startedproducing comic strips and jokes for localnewspapers and magazines.

In 1954 he joined the Daily Mirror,for whichhe created a strip about a character inspiredby the people Smythe had met while living inthe North of England: Andy Capp was born.Within a few years, the adventures of Andyand his wife Flo became an unmissableappointment for English readers. They werepublished in the Sunday Pictorial and then inmany other countries around the world,winning numerous prizes for satire andcartoons. In the 1980s Andy Capp alsostarred in his own musical and a sitcom onthe BBC. The advennures of Andy and Flocontinued until Reg Smythe’s death on 13June 1998.
