average from 201 to 207 after only fifteen games, all that from his fifth 700 series.

Besides watching bowling videos, playing video games, and playing baseball in the summer, Dawson also spends his time doing his homework for school.

Dawson Kohl is a 10-year old boy from Dubuque, Iowa. He is the seventh youngest bowler with a sanctioned 300 game, according to the most recent check of USBC records (Thanks, Matt!). An unconfirmed report said the prior Iowa State USBC record was by a 14-year old.

He’s been bowling since age three, practicing pretty much every day after school at Creslanes before the center closed in early August, as I wrote about a few weeks ago. Dad Heath, had been the center GM for the last six years and now is the head bowling coach at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo.

As I met this young man last week while subbing in a local league, he told me about getting a phone call from a certain pro from Australia, hardly believing he was talking with someone he had seen “a bunch on TV.” Much like two other 10-year olds who have rolled USBC sanctioned 300 games, current PBA players Michael Tang and Kamron Doyle, Kohl

JUST PAYING ATTENTIONContinued from Page 1

wants to join their ranks some day, too.

Kohl will be adding Junior Gold to his tournament itiner-ary this summer, in addition to the handful of regional junior scholarship tourneys he already bowls.

Here are two links to local media stories, one from the Dubuque Telegraph Herald (https://www.telegraphherald.com/sports/local_sports/article_b24c3d55-c6d1-56cb-8d32-31af8aa2ca19.html ), and from KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids (https://www.kcrg.com/2020/10/14/10-year-old-becomes-youngest-person-to-bowl-perfect-game-in-iowa/).

Even two days afterward, Dawson’s face lit up like a Christmas tree as he told me about his game.

“It was amazing!!” Listening to Dawson talk

about that game and about his pure joy about bowling took me back to that age. Wasn’t that good, of course, but sitting in school on Fridays know-ing there was three games of league Saturday morning, then ninety minutes of ABC’s Pro Bowlers Tour later that after-noon was my own pure joy.

I haven’t spoken with too many 10-year olds who are as flat out psyched about bowling as Dawson Kohl is, but don’t be surprised if you hear more about this young man in the coming years. ######

Ah, those PBA television

ratings. The opening show of the PBA Playoffs was on the main Fox network Saturday October 10 with overnight ratings showing an average of 737,000 watched the first hour and 695,000 the second hour. Those numbers were bumped to 750,000 once complete ratings were gathered several days later.

Usually, numbers on the main network are near or over one million, but since mid-March, like much else, everything has been different.

Sports TV ratings have been down pretty much across the board, but the PBA, not as much as the major teams sports. Casual viewership was split on ABC, NBC, and ESPN with NCAA Football. ABC aired Miami at defending national champion Clemson (averaging 4.6 million, NBC aired Florida State at fifth ranked Notre Dame (averag-ing 2.9M), ESPN carried the Alabama/Ole Miss (averaging 5.7M).

That 750,000 number doesn’t look so bad now, does it?

######In the first full year of

Bowlero ownership, the PBA telecasts certainly have a distinctly different look com-pared to recent years. There have been three different set changes, two newer post Covid, the third has roots going back nearly sixty years on national television. I’ll save that one for

last.Starting with the PBA King

of the Lanes won by Kris Prather, the use of a curved eight foot high ribbon board has been used behind the players seating area from behind the right lane curving around the settee ending on the approach to the left of the left lane of the television pair.

Sponsor mentions, player mentions, and announcing the current match winner are sev-eral uses of the ribbon board. The bigger board accompanies the straighter shorter in height ribbon board down lane to the left of the left side television lane.

With live sports returning to national TV in front of tour and television production staff only, the PBA has introduced prere-corded crowd noise after strikes and a little less noise for spares. This is from a crowd sound provider known as SonoFans.

According to an October 8 article posted on sportsvideo.org., SonoFans uses crowd noise from prior PBA telecasts. Audio has been cleaned removing sounds too specific, like for an individual bowler mentioned by name, then sends the soundtrack back for sound mixing onto telecasts as well as into arenas and stadiums. Fox affiliated sports are using SonoFans, including Premier Boxing Champions, Fox MLB Postseason coverage, and NFL games. SonoFans debuted in the

PBA League coverage. Company president Fed Vogler expects the Major Soccer League and college basketball to be the next sports to use this technology.

Among the audio team are three techs who have mixed live concert sound for Maroon 5, Sam Smith, Santana, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, and Depeche Mode. For those of you scoring at home, all but Smith are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

So, what’s the 60-year old idea making a comeback to network television? Here’s your clue. Go find the ball return on the TV pair. They are not using a traditional pair of lanes. Rather than using for example Lanes 15 and 16, they now use Lanes 16 and 17. Ball returns are left of the left lane and right of the right lane. Haven’t heard any concrete evidence as why, but here’s my take. It looks much cleaner on camera. Using this old/new staging, the ball hood no longer blocks the legs of the bowler on the left lane.

The first documented case of this staging technique I could find goes back to the Jackpot Bowling on NBC. The best example of this is a past JPA Lost Classic featuring Texas bowling legend Don Ellis in his legendary match with Therm Gibson airing live on NBC following the Rose Bowl telecast January 2, 1961. Gibson tossed a six bagger, good for the $75,000 jackpot.

bowling centers in the greater Phoenix area… a total of 30. Compared to Los Angeles, or Northern New Jersey, the number of operating locations seemed a bit high, piquing my interest to investigate further.

DAVE'S CORNERContinued from Page 1

Of the 30 locations, a surprising total of 17 centers are operated by Bowlero (AMF-7; Bowlero-9; and Bowlmor-1). Phoenix was one of the few areas that I never investi-gated while working for AMF, because it was dominated by two other integers in bowling - Fairlanes, which was acquired by AMF Bowling Centers in

1995; and Brunswick Recre-ation Centers, also acquired by Bowlmor-AMF (now known as Bowlero) in 2014.

If my recollection is cor-rect, the Bowlmor and AMF locations in Phoenix appear to represent the old Fairlanes sites, while the Bowlero locations are the old Brunswick centers.

ing an average of 30 lanes for each of the 30 locations, that places an average of 5,263 people per lane bed.

Back in the heyday of bowling, the Phoenix number of people per lane bed would represent an opportunity for another location. The average in the 1970’s and 1980’s was 2,000 people per lane bed, and

anything approaching 5,000 was a “no-brainer” for construction of another bowling center.

Now let’s consider the popula-tion to lane ratio in greater Los Angeles. Using the same metrics that we applied above, the Los Angeles SMSA represents a 2017 estimate of 18,790,000 residents. In an area from Camarillo to Riverside, and Apple Valley to Lake Forest, my estimate of 40 bowling centers, of which 12 are operated by Bowlero, equates to 469,750 per bowling center, or 15,658 per lane bed. If not for business regulations and state taxes, the opportunity for additional bowling centers in Los Angeles would be… unbelievable!

How about Northern New Jersey? With approximately 40 bowling centers and over 8,000,000 residents in the local

SMSA, the number of bowlers per center is 222,050. Only 8 of the 40 locations are operated by Bowlero in Northern New Jersey, with approximately 7,400 residents per lane bed. Once again, the opportunity for a new bowling center in this area, while not as dramatic as Los Angeles, is evident.

As I was wrapping up this article, I received a call from Herb Grassl, Editor of the Desert Bowler. During the course of a conversation that lasted a couple of hours we agreed on just about everything in life, including the informa-tion provided above. Herb also indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic has eliminated the printed hard copies for now, but a very colorful edition is provided twice a month online.

What about the Detroit Bowler, or any other bowling newspaper that you’re aware of in your area? Let us know of any printed or online publica-tions and we will include them in an upcoming article. To be continued…

nervous and I’m glad I was able to come through again.”

Through his first two PBA Playoffs matches, Lavoie rolled 21 of a possible 24 strikes in defeating Norm Duke in the Round of 24 and Rash in the Round of 16.

“I bowl my best when I’m able to create some miss room in the middle part of the lane,” said Lavoie. “In the last two matches, I’ve been able to do that. I took a look at the bracket before we started and I knew it was going to be a tough road, and it has been so far. I’m sure it will be from the next match on, but I’m ready to keep going.”

Lavoie’s 300 was the 29th televised perfect game in PBA history and third of the 2020 PBA Tour season, joining Tommy Jones, who achieved perfection in the championship match of the Hall of Fame Classic in January, and Jakob Butturff, who bowled 300 dur-ing the qualifying round of the PBA Tour Finals in July.

Rash, who bowled 236 in a losing effort, has been involved in a PBA-record six televised perfect games, rolling two and opposing four.

“I like to set the lanes up so I can get off to a big start,” said Rash of his penchant for being involved on either side of perfection. “I try to find the most miss room and out-strike my competitors. (Lavoie) and I were going to play a similar part of the lane, so we knew the scores could get pretty high. I bowled a really good game and probably could have bowled a bigger score, but I still would have lost.

great player, very accurate, and I guess he really likes to bowl against me.”

Lavoie advances to face top-ranked Jason Belmonte in the quarterfinals. Belmonte cited a turkey in the middle of the game which was crucial to take out the 17th-seeded Jakob Butturff, 205-195.

Butturff struck twice in the 10th frame to force Belmonte to mark, which he did, mov-ing him into the PBA Playoffs quarterfinals for the second straight year.

Anthony Simonsen rolled the second-highest game on the telecast as he eliminated seven-time PBA Tour champion Dick Allen, 258-204.

“I decided pretty early ure-thane was going to be the play,” said fourth-seeded Simonsen of his bowling-ball strategy. “I threw a couple mediocre shots in the beginning and got away with one, but I bowled a pretty solid game. I just tried to

make good shots and keep the pocket in play. I was fortunate enough to throw a few strikes together.”

Simonsen earns a rematch with Kris Prather, who elimi-nated Simonsen in last season’s Playoffs semifinals. Prather, the defending PBA Playoffs champion, moved into the quarterfinals with a win over four-time PBA Tour champion Marshall Kent.

“I was super nervous,” admitted Prather. “I haven’t had a whole lot of competition reps, so being on TV again is a little nerve-racking, but to be able to come away with the victory tonight is huge.”

A tight match early, Prather credits a ball change during the commercial break as the difference in the match.

“I switched to the original Hy-Road,” Prather said. “It stored a little more energy and was able to go through the pins
