SOCIOLOGY WOMEN STUDY / HUMAN RIGHTS The Mystic Sadhus in India Bindeshwar Prasad Mandal About the Book Contents Mysticism is the practice of religious ecstasies (religious experiences during alternate states of consciousness), together with whatever ideologies, ethics, rites, myths, legends, and magic may be related to them. It may also refer to the attainment of insight in ultimate or hidden truths, and to human transformation supported by various practices and experiences. During the early modern period, the definition of mysticism grew to include a broad range of beliefs and ideologies related to "extraordinary experiences and states of mind". In modern times, "mysticism" has acquired a limited definition, with broad applications, as meaning the aim at the "union with the Absolute, the Infinite, or God". This limited definition has been applied to a wide range of religious traditions and practices, valuing "mystical experience" as a key element of mysticism. Broadly defined, mysticism can be found in all religious traditions, from indigenous religions and folk religions like shamanism, to organised religions like the Abrahamic faiths and Indian religions, and modern spirituality, New Age and New Religious Movements. Child Hunger and Human RightsInternational Governance

Clair Apodaca

About the Book

Contents

Child Hunger and Human Rights: International Governance applies the human rights theory of legal obligation to the problem of child malnutrition and investigates whether duty-bearers have fulfilled their obligations to protect, respect and provide. This book includes moral, economic, political and legal components to the research on the child’s right to be free from hunger. Using two methods of investigation; the first a historical comparative method based on the systematic analysis of the content of historical materials, government documents, policy statements, state budgets,

newspaper reports and other public records, and the second is statistical analysis. Apodaca investigates beyond the suffering, deformities, and deaths of children, to child malnutrition resulting in reduced physical and mental development threatening the child’s life opportunities, the prospects of further generations, and the growth of the economy. Examining the connection between governmental agricultural, economic and financial policies, international donor policies, and transnational corporate voluntary codes of conduct affecting child malnutrition rates, this book will be of interest to policy-makers, activists, students and scholars of human rights, social justice, international ethics, development, international relations and law.

Studying Human Rights

Todd Landman

About the Book

Contents

Studying Human Rights draws on key theories and methods from the social sciences to develop a framework for the systematic study of human rights problems. It argues that solid empirical analysis of human rights problems rests on examining the observable practices from state and non-state actors that constitute human rights violations to provide plausible explanations for their occurrence and provide deeper understanding of their meaning.

Such explanations and understanding draws on the theoretical insights from rational, structural and cultural approaches in the social sciences. This book includes:Ÿ an outline of the scope of human rightsŸ the terrain of key actors that have an impact on human rightsŸ a summary of the social science theories, methods and measures for studying human rightsŸ a separate treatment of global comparative studies, truth commissions, and human rights impact

assessment.

Policing and Contemporary Governance The Anthropology of Police in Practice

Edited byWilliam Garriott

About the Book

Contents

What is it that police and policing actually do? What are the effects? And how are these effects mediated and experienced by different people at different times and in different contexts? Examining these questions, the contributors in this volume draw attention to the centrality of police and policing to the project of governance and the experience of being human in the contemporary world. They seek to make sense of and counteract the contemporary fetishization of police by problematizing their taken-for-granted

existence and understanding their impact on contemporary human life. To this end, this volume provides a preliminary step in the establishment of an anthropology of police and policing.

Dr Peniel is an excellent guide through the complexities of the caste system and its enduring potency in the India of today. The central concern of Dalit theology is with the Dalit people, who used to be called Untouchables, and who are still a vast number of poor, despised and underprivileged people. This is an important, relevant, and disturbing book. It should be widely read, and responded to.

Duncan B. Forrester, Edinburgh, UK

Peniel Rufus’ incisive dismantling and insightful reconstruction of Dalit theology is a fresh and compelling contribution both to local and global theologies. Drawing creative synergy from his discontentment with Dalit Theology’s apathy toward everyday liberative praxis, Rufus brilliantly re-interprets the synoptic healing stories to engender committed and concrete emancipatory patterns for overcoming caste-based discrimination in India. This is a passionate, original, constructive and courageous book. No one interested in Indian theology can afford to bypass this remarkable book.

Sociology in a Changing World

Prem Lata

About the Book

Contents

Sociology is a fundamental social science discipline that studies social structures and their changes as well as social activities, values and attitudes. In today's world, both cultures and societies are changing more quickly than ever before. Change is an ever-present phenomenon. It is the law of nature. Society is not at all a static phenomenon, but it is a dynamic entity. It is an ongoing process. The social structure is subject to incessant changes. Individuals may strive for stability, yet the fact remains that society is an every changing phenomenon; growing, decaying, renewing and accommodating itself to changing conditions. The human composition of societies

changes over time, technologies expand, ideologies and values take on new components; institutional functions and structures undergo reshaping. Hence, no society remains complete static. Incessant changeability is very inherent nature of human society. With the current rate of population increase, it is expected that the total requirements for future health, education, housing and many other welfare needs are bound to increase. This will certainly bring the drastic changes not only in the microstructures, but also in macrostructures of Indian society. This well written and clearly organized book will be useful for students, policymakers, researchers, and social workers.

They range in size from the Gonds (roughly 7.4 million) and the Santals (approximately 4.2 million) to only eighteen Chaimals in the Andaman Islands. Central Indian states have the country's largest tribes, and, taken as a whole, roughly 75 percent of the total tribal population live there. The Tribals of India

Afroze Iqbal

Tribal Communities and Social Change

About the Book

Contents

The tribals took to agriculture sometime during the first quarter of the 20th century. At that time they had enough land in their possession. Increasingly, the caste Hindus made their entry into the tribal hinterland and since then the tribal land slipped into the hands of these non-tribals. The indigenous tribal religion has split into several reform movements. Bhagatism is the new form of religion accepted by the tribals. This has created an ethnic stratification among these indigenous people. Today, these tribals are working as migrant groups outside their parent village. Government jobs have also encouraged them to move from one posting to another in a state or outside the state.

Migration thus has emerged as a powerful factor for the transformation of tribals. The tribals are no longer an encapsulated mass of people restricted to hills and forests. They have become a part of the larger process of globalization. This book tries to explore the contemporary position of Indian tribes in respect of nature, degree of change and development on the one hand and their subsequent state of integration on the other. Students and professionals from tribal studies and development will find the book useful.

1. The State of India's Indigenous and Tribal Peoples 2. Impact of Urbanisation on Tribal Development 3. Globalization and Local Cultures 4. Roll of SC/ST Commission of India? 5. Indian Tribal Policy 6. Legal Provisions for the Welfare of Tribals 7. Women's Participation in Panchayats in Scheduled Areas 8. A Society in Transition 9. Cultural Heritage, Cultural Empowerment and Development

About the Book

Contents

India's forests are home to crores of people, including many Scheduled Tribes, who live in or near the forest areas of the country. Nearly 250 million people live in and around forests in India, of which the estimated indigenous Adivasi or tribal population stands at about 100 million. Tribals have been living in the forest ecology and that has shaped their life and the society they presently have. Most of them live in close proximity of forest and depend on the forest for their livelihood and sustenance. Distinctions based on kinship, wealth and power among some tribal villages are as sharp as we find among the non-tribal villages. Tribals are not, theoretically, a part of Hindu social organisation, but they have always been in touch with wider society in India. Tribes today are in search of a sense of identity, of a sense of belonging and for self-determination in a new social order. Several new states have been formed in the north-eastern region. The demand for the formation of a separate state of Jharkhand for tribals of Bihar and adjoining districts of other states was indicative of this new identity. This valuable book can be used by teachers and students at their graduate study and teaching.

About the Book

India is the home to large number of indigenous people, who are still untouched by the lifestyle of the modern world. With more than 84.4 million, India has the largest population of the tribal people in the world. These tribal people also known as the adivasi's are the poorest in the country, who are still dependent on haunting , agriculture and fishing. Some of the major tribal groups in India include Gonds, Santhals, Khasis, Angamis, Bhils, Bhutias and Great Andamanese. All these tribal people have their own culture, tradition, language and lifestyle. There are some 573 communities recognized by the government as Scheduled Tribes and therefore eligible to receive special benefits and to compete for reserved seats in legislatures and schools. The present book offers a comprehensive account of India's tribals and the changes in their lives over times. The book will be useful for students, social workers, policy makers, and all those interested in the tribal studies.

Women play an essential role in the management of natural resources, including soil, water, forests and energy...and often have a profound traditional and contemporary knowledge of the natural world around them. Whereas women were previously neglected or ignored, there was increasing attention paid to the impact of women on the natural environment and, in return, the effects the environment has on the health and well-being of women. When we talk of women's participation in societal matters, the most important aspect is their participation in the management of Environment.

This valuable book addresses the global environmental problems, sustainable development and women role in environmental management. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of environmental studies, development studies, feminist and environmental geography, anthropology, sociology, environmental philosophy, public policy, planning, media studies, as well as women's and gender studies.

Indian philosophy refers to ancient philosophical traditions of the Indian subcontinent. The principal schools are classified as either orthodox or heterodox – astika or nastika – depending on one of three alternate criteria: whether it believes the Vedas are a valid source of knowledge; whether the school believes in the premises of Brahman and Atman; and whether the school believes in afterlife and Devas. There are six major schools of orthodox Indian Hindu philosophy Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Mimansa and Vedanta, and five major heterodox schools—Jain, Buddhist, Ajivika, Ajñana, and Carvaka. However, there are other methods of classification; Vidyaranya for instance identifies sixteen schools of Indian philosophy by including those that belong to the Śaivaand Raseśvara traditions. The main schools of Indian philosophy were formalised chiefly between 1000 BCE to the early centuries of the Common Era. Competition and integration between the various schools was intense during their formative years, especially between 800 BCE and 200 CE. Some schools like Jainism, Buddhism, Yoga, Śaiva and Vedanta survived, but others, like Ajnana, Charvaka and Ajivika did not. Ancient and medieval era texts of Indian philosophies include extensive discussions on Ontology (metaphysics, Brahman-Atman, Sunyata-Anatta), reliable means of knowledge (epistemology, Pramanas), value system (axiology) and other topics. This book gives a great overview of philosophy. This introductory book will be valuable resource guide for students, Professional Philosophers as well as those interested in Indian philosophy and its significance to contemporary thought.

Women’s rights are the fundamental human rights that were enshrined by the United Nations for every human being on the planet nearly 70 years ago. These rights include the right to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn a fair and equal wage. As the now-famous saying goes, “women’s rights are human rights.” That is to say, women are entitled to all of these rights. Yet almost everywhere around the world, women and girls are still denied them, often simply because of their gender. Winning rights for women is about more than giving opportunities to any individual woman or girl; it is also about changing how countries and communities work. It involves changing laws and policies, winning hearts and minds, and investing in strong women’s organizations and movements. Gender equality is at the very heart of human rights and United Nations values. This book is a valuable resource for both undergraduate and graduate students in fields such as Gender or Women’s Studies, Human Rights, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, and Sociology, as well as researchers and professionals working in related areas.

marginalisation, is the social disadvantage and relegation to the fringe of society. It is a term used widely in Europe and was first used in France. It is used across disciplines including education, sociology, psychology, politics and economics. Social exclusion is the process in which individuals or people are systematically blocked from (or denied full access to) various rights, opportunities and resources that are normally available to members of a different group, and which are fundamental to social integration and observance of human rights within that particular group. This book is a valuable resource guide for feminist theorists, women's and gender studies students, as well as political and social theorists which provides important insights into one of contemporary feminism's most central concerns.
