He he he he.

Randee CalderonStudying in a La Salle

school has enabled me to discover somany things that ordinary people fromother schools may not have theopportunity to have discovered. In anutshell, I experienced a lot of thingsand learned a lot in the process. Andeven if I hated some of those“experiences”, I am glad they didhappen in one way or another.Perhaps the lessons in life are meantto be learned the hard way. And thathard way comes with pain andstruggle.

Taking up a course that wasfar from what I loved demanded agreat deal of effort and sacrifice. Atthe time I was still studying,I held on the hope that mycourse, which was aboutInformation Technology, would still be the “in-demand” course once Ifinish the degree. Sadly, with just a few monthsprior to my graduation rites, nursing was suddenly themost marketable job, thusmaking me think twiceabout the future I was so eagerlyplanned for.

I then gathered all the adviceI can get and counted the options Ihad left. With the horror stories I heardfrom CS alumni and even closefriends who were alreadyexperiencing the harsh reality ofcorporate life in the metro, I suddenlymade the decision that perhaps Iwould not succeed in the IT industry. So I started venturing to anotherfield… I decided to work in theacademe.

As early as college, I alreadyhad the insight that I would have to

find a job that would provide me withthe growth and satisfaction I earnestlywanted. I needed to find a job thatwould not only be a workingopportunity but also a learningopportunity as well.I wanted adynamic working atmosphere, something that offered professionaland spiritual growth. Thus leading meto the job that I have right now.

I have often told a few friendswho are still in college even up to thistime to study all their options. Butwith so few job opportunities outthere, especially in the IT industry, most of my close friends are alreadylosing hope even before finishing their

course. But then again, hope is whatwe should not lose, even in the darkestperiods of our lives.

Even with the advent of the“nursing-caregiver craze”, Informationtechnology still plays a vital role in ourlives, thus the opportunity to get a jobis still there. The problem is, with thethousands of IT graduates producedevery year, the options suddenlybecome limited and thus people doubtof the chances of actually making itsuccessfully.

The impending problem ofproviding all of these people with thejob that is related to the course they

have studied has long plagued ourgovernment. With all the impendingproblems, people have no choice butto work abroad to find “greenerpasteurs”.

In a more practical sense, perhaps this is right since an ordinaryperson who seeks success and a stableincome would not think twice aboutapplying overseas especially with thecurrent situation of our economy.Indeed, the reality is more depressingthan it actually is. It saddens even me

to see some of my friendsleaving the country towork abroad, rather thanbe an asset to our nation. What’s even worse is thatwe cannot seem to doanything about it sinceopportunities come in sucha small amount in ourcountry that we do nothave any other choice butto leave.

That is why it would be veryinteresting to study our options comethe May elections. Indeed, we need apresident who can get foreignbusinessmen to open up morebusinesses here in the country. Themore foreign corporate companiesthat would open, coupled with localindustries, the more job opportunitiesthere would be. Hopefully in the longrun a sound economy would beattainable, and with InformationTechnology being a vital part of theprogress needed for a stable economy, hope for our IT and CS graduateswould be better.

Studying in a La Salle school hasenabled me to discover so manythings that ordinary people fromother schools may not have theopportunity to have discovered.

With the ultimate goal ofcontinuing the legacy of Council ofStudent Organizations student leadersand promoting closer ties among theDLSU-D graduates, the Council ofStudent Organizations AlumniAssociation (CSOAA) was founded onApril 5, 2003. The unfaltering effort ofits pioneer members and support fromthe DLSAA (De La Salle AlumniAssociation) DLSU-D Chapter, Inc.made the creation of the saidorganization possible.

Through the years,CSO has produced so many talentedand gifted individuals that are nowgearing towards their chosen careers.

These very same individuals arealso the ones who still support theorganizations that honed them into well-rounded persons. In spite the fact thatthey already stepped out of being astudent, the fervor among them asformer student leaders still continues.

“OOOOOnce a Lasallian, always a Lasallian.” True to theteachings of St. La Salle, every member of the Lasallian communitylives up to the virtues of being Christian achievers for God andcountry.

Unique as they are, every Lasallian makes an effort to bean asset to the community in every special way possible. Be itfrom educating the minds of those who are less, privileged, touchingthe hearts of people whose lives have been shattered by endlessturmoil, and transforming the lives in the spirit of Christian faith,Lasallians have been everywhere throughout the nation, hopingto make a better society.

Among the many Lasallian institutions in the country,De La Salle University-Dasmariñas is true to its effort in living itsvision-mission and imparting the ways of St. La Salle to the livesof the underprivileged. In a thriving community of provinces inthe CALABARZON area, DLSU-D makes a mark not only as acenter of development and excellence in the field of education, but also a marked instrument in community development, participating in outreach programs that enrich the lives of peopleregardless of life status.

In its effort to develop students by inculcating the Lasallianvalues of Religio, Mores and Cultura, DLSU-D has been able totrain and develop competent students who have become leaders intheir own right while studying. Through this, and the grace ofChristian faith, the University has been able to produce successfulgraduates in the fields of education and business through the years.

Yet the task of continuing the spirit of living St. La Salle’svirtues and teaching has become a challenging task to those whoalready have finished their studies in DLSU-D. Some people saythat perhaps the so-called Lasallian spirit lives only within thehalls of GMH, or the grounds of the west and east campus.Camaraderie and the will to serve exist only when Lasallians arestill students. However, when the time comes that they have toleave the campus, the virtues die along with the spirit everyLasallian has been proud of.The Alumni Association

Luckily, the birth of the De La Salle University AlumniAssociation DLSU-D Chapter has proven that the Lasallians canstill be who they were even if they have come to leave the Universityto pursue their own ambitions. The non-stock, non-profitassociation provides a venue for annual reunions of DLSU-Dgraduates who seek to rekindle the spirit of being Lasallians evenonce a year. Other activites and benefits also await alumni everyyear as the association seeks to reach out to local communities inits thrust to gather Lasallians and continue to carry out the

University’s mission-vision as well as providing opportunities tothose who chose to continue to serve God and country.

The association currently has more than 15,000 alumnimembers which include the graduates of the Colleges of Nursingand Midwifery and Radiologic Technology before the said collegestransferred to the Health and Sciences Campus (HSC) on 1999.Annual Homecomings

Every year the association arranges a grand alumnihomecoming during the summer as a venue for Lasallians to meetup with old friends and rekindle the fun memories of studying intheir beloved alma mater. With this, the association also awardsthose alumni who have been big contributors on the communityin the field of Business and Education. The last alumnihomecoming was held on April 16, 2003 at the Lake Park. It wasthe 6th so far and it also witnessed the birth of other alumniassociations under the mother umbrella of DLSAA DLSU-DChapter. That year the Council of Student Organizations AlumniAssociation was created.

Hopefully, other Alumni Associations that would beunder the umbrella of De La Salle University Alumni AssociationDLSU-D Chapter would soon follow.Community Outreach Programs

In line with its objectives in grouping members to serveGod and country, the association also holds special outreachprograms for the benefit of the less privileged within theDasmariñas area. Particularly, the association has already launchedtwo health service missions to benefit the local people. In the longrun, the association plans to tap Lasallian medicine graduates tobe a part of the mission in an effort the live out the spirit ofcommunity service.

The association along with the Lasallian CommunityDevelopment Center (LCDC) has already launched a dentalmission dubbed as “Ngiting Berde Ngayong Disyembre” onDecember 2002. The said mission benefited nearly 100 residentsfrom a nearby Barangay. With the activities apparent success, theassociation figured to make the mission an annual event and hopedthat it through it Lasallians can be of service to the people of need.

This effort and vision was again witnessed last year,December 6, 2003. What started to be a simple dental mission nowhas included even a physical examination of the recipients. Thesaid mission which has now become an annual event was held atthe Dasmariñas Municipal Jail, benefiting the inmates who havelong not experienced such health services. The association carriedout the free health service along with the help of the HSC AlumniAssociation and the LCDC.

Scholarship grantsIn its pursuit to reach out to the less privileged, yet

academically deserving students, the association also offersacademic scholarship grants regardless of course. The associationhas already sponsored seven deserving students, three of whomhave already graduated.

Currently, four Lasallians are enjoying scholarship grants, among those who were lucky to have been granted are CelestinePaul Dayo (ECE1), Rhicalyn Salinas (BTM2), April Paculdar(BSM3), and Alpha Pascual (COM4).

Comprising the beneficiaries who have already graduatedare Joel Espedido and Therese Danielle Bejosa, both Bachelor ofSecondary Education graduates and Mary Jane Morales andManagement graduate.

True to being Lasallians, two of the recipients even returnedthe favor of being exclusive academic grantees in their own right. Not only maintaining the grades through the years of studying inthe University, but also being as student leaders and academicachievers. Moreover after graduating, the recipients continued toserve the institution that has helped them become who they are.

Notable among the recipients are Joel Espidido and ThereseDanielle Bejosa. Espedido, a popular and vigilant student leaderand former president of the College of Education Student Councilin his student years, has continued to live the spirit of La Salle’svirtues in helping fellow citizens and is now working as a facultymember of the Lasallian Community Development Center.Meanwhile, Danielle Bejosa, who even graduated Cum Laude inthe year 2002, is now a faculty member of the Languages Department.

Through these scholarship grants, the association hopesto foster and continue St. La Salle’s foremost intention of extendinga helping hand to those who cannot avail of a quality educationdue to financial reasons.

Presently, the association is still seeking ways onincreasing the funds available for the scholarship grants in aneffort to help out more students who are eager to pursue theirdreams of academic achievement, yet are less privileged to makethese ambitions a reality. The Almuni Kapihan

Among the goals of every association is to achievecamaraderie amongst its members. Cultivating this culture andspirit among Lasallians, the association also conducts a gatheringof several alumni members per colleges conceptualized in theKapihan sa Almuni. The so-called coffee talk affair is a simplegathering of DLSU-D graduates where they could discuss variouscommunity feedback regarding certain program curriculum

whether or not if these are still updated according the demands ofthe industry. The so-called meeting also provided opportunitiesfor the further betterment of current academic curricula.

Presently, the College of Business Administration, Collegeof Education, College of Law Enforcement and Graduate School ofEducation, Arts and Sciences have already conducted their meetings.Still awaiting are the Graduate School of Business to be held onSeptember, College of Business Administration, College of SA andCollege of Radiologic Technology on April, College of Engineeringand Technology on March, College of Science on July, College ofInternational Hospitality Management on August and finally theCollege of Nursing and Midwifery on December.Association Website

Using the benefits provided by the Information Age, theassociation is also maintaining a web site to keep the alumnimembers “connected”. http://www.dasma.dlsu.edu.ph/alumnifeatures updated announcements, news, featured activities andother related information for the benefit of the alumni members.Various photographs that document previous activities of theassociation are also included in the site. A groups listing is alsomaintained to be able to reach to those long-lost alumni membersthrough e-mail.Further Projects

Aside from increasing the scholarship funds, theassociation is also keen in developing meeting places in theUniversity for visiting and resident alumni members. A plan for aso-called Alumni Park has been mentioned to provide a specialplace for visiting Lasallian alumni. However the site forconstruction has yet to be known.

The spirit of being an agent of change within thecommunity is one of the most remarkable and foremost values taughtby St. La Salle to his followers. Being the patron saint of teachers, hehas extended his hand to all those who are in need of moral upliftingthrough simple ways such as teaching. This seemingly simple acthas now blossomed into one of the most successful and prestigiouslearning institutions in the country, and DLSU-D is proud to be oneof those that seek to the transform lives of the less fortunate througheducation and community service.

Evidently, this kind of servant leadership is not onlyfostered inside the DLSU-D campus, but also outside as seen inthrough successful graduates and even faculty members.

Chapter seeks not only to rekindle the spirit of Lasalliancamaraderie amongst Lasallian alumni, but also to continue thetruest intentions of being Lasallians, and that is, to be Christianachievers for God and country.

WWWWWho is Sir Crud’z? Maybe too few of ourCouncil of Student Organizations student leaders knowsomething about the man behind this name but if onewould be interested to learn about the accounts of CSO’searly challenges and triumphs, the right person to get intoa conversation with is Dr. Alvin Crudo. The history ofthe organization’s first few attempts to enliven theenthusiasm of students in organizational participation isalso his story.

A servant and a leaderBeing of service to Lasallian community is an

integral part of him ever since. Even when he was still astudent, the servant and the leader in him already persisted. He once became the President of SORTS (Society ofRadiologic Technology Students), treasurer of CSO andvice president in their collegiate council at his time.Impressively, despite the weight of this multipleresponsibilities, he was able to bring SORTS to the heightsof its glory being the Best Organization in the 1992Student Awards.

At year 1996, he graduated and embarked into anew mission of being a Lasallian educator.

But more than being a teacher, he was destined totouch more lives and make more meaningful friendshipsas he was tapped to become a student coordinator at theStudent Affairs Office (formerly SADO). Dr LauraCampos, who was the dean of OSA that time, recommended him to the position. He eventually becamethe CSO Adviser at that same year.

Sir Crud’z and CSOBeing the CSO Adviser did not come easy for him.

Few years’ back, the student passivity was more dismalas ever. The disappointing number of students whoactively partakes on student extra-curricular programs washis first challenge.

According to Dr. Crudo, it took two years torebuild CSO. It was like starting from scratch: Meetingswere hardly attended, so-called motorcades wereparticipated by five vehicles at most and majority oforganizations naturally dies out of lack of members tosupport it. Despite of these problems, he said, “The showmust go on!”

It was through hard work, dedication andnetworking with other student bodies that the ember ofstudent participation started to spark up. The year 1999was the most significant of all when the very first KTS(Kantahan, Tugtugan at Sayawan) was launched. For thefirst time in the DLSU-D’s history, the major organizationscollaborated to implement a common project.

Astoundingly, Heraldo Filipino, University StudentCouncil and collegiate councils worked hand in handalong with CSO in Dr. Crudo’s leadership.

In spite of the success of his term as CSO Adviser,he still considers human relations as still the moreimportant thing. He was far more grateful for thefriendships made with other people he met along the waythan the crowning laurel of his accomplishments.

“It was not the number of participants but the feltcamaraderie among us”

The pain of moving onThis was the same reason why he was so sad about

having to leave CSO in year 2000 after he wasrecommended to become Dean of CMRT (College ofMedical Radiologic Technology). This coincided with therelocation of CMRT Dean’s Office to Health ScienceCampus. It was really time for him to move on.

His legacy to the people whom he had touchedthe hearts was not left unrecognized. The most emotionalepisode of his departing is still fresh in his memories. Hevividly remembers the year 2000 Student Awards whenthe people whom he had worked with through the fourmeaningful years of being CSO Adviser gave him tribute. His eyes still twinkle as he told me about how his favoriteDLSU-D Chorale sang for him his favorite song “Minsanang Minahal ay Ako” and how he realized that he becamepart of so many Lasallian lives.

Who is Sir Crud’z now?Aside from being a graduate of BS Radiologic

Technology he also had Masters of Arts in EducationMajor in Educational Management in 1996 and tookDoctor Of Education Major in Educational Managementon year 2003. Presently he is the Dean of College ofMedical Radiologic Technology, and President,Association of Deans of Philippine Schools and Collegesof Radiologic Technology.

We surely should be proud of Dr. Alvin Crudobut what makes him proud as Lasallian?

“Aside from having the 5 C’s, Lasallians are alsorisk takers. They have the ability to transform their dreaminto a reality. Hindi lang sila uupo at mananaginip langbut they put their dreams into actions”, he quipped.

By the way Dr. Alvin Crudo is this year’s chair ofthe Alumni 2004 homecoming.

Message to CSO student leaders“Prove that CSO is the school’s partner in the holisticdevelopment of students”, he said. “ Value people whoare helping CSO and never forget about the past becauseit is the basis of what they should do in the present”.

TTTTThe incumbent president of the DLSU AlumniAssociation DLSU-D Chapter is Rommel Sanchez. I knewnothing about Rommel before except that I related hischaracter to his namesake Gen. Erwin Rommel of theGerman Army during the WW II. Gen. Rommel holds abrilliant record as a tactician in desert warfare, drivingthe British from Libya to Al ‘Alamayn (El ‘Alamein).Rommel’s victories earned him promotion to field marshalas well as the nickname the Desert Fox. Of course it isnot to be assumed that because of this comparison I lookedupon the president of the Association with contempt. Ofcourse not! It is just that later on I learned from mydealings from this man that he has something in commonand a lot of disparity from the general. As a leader, I was a witness how Rommel Sanchezwas able to compromise quarreling principles within theBoard of Trustees. By the way, the BOT is composed ofmature individuals possessing different valid standpoints. It cannot be avoided that sometimes views werecontradictory which resulted to intellectual and emotionalarguments. What I admire about Rommel Sanchez washow he was able to confront issues and people withouthurting egos and feelings. He made sure that he was ontop of the situation by resolving the “agenda” based onreason and faith. He does not utilize blitzkrieg or Gestapotactic to make the job done. At the end of the day, nostones left unturned. Above all, no heartaches. That’stactic at its best. If Gen Rommel is the Desert Fox, for mePresident Rommel is the Urban Fox. As a professional, I did some background check aboutMr. Sanchez. I found out that he was a faculty member ofmany years before becoming the dean of the College ofRadiological Technology when the college was stillincorporated with DLSU-Dasmariñas. After his stint inthe college, he was transferred to DLSU-Manila to becomepart of the Lasallian Schools Supervision Office (LASSO)until the present time. Technically, Mr. Sanchez is stillpart of the roster of faculty members of DLSU-Dasmariñas. Mr. Sanchez is on the process of finishinghis doctorate degree in education at DLSU-Manila. Thisis of course over and above him being a second-termpresident of the Association. With that impeccable record,I need not say here that we are talking about a veryrespectable gentleman. As a friend, Rommel Sanchez is one wacky guy youcan depend on. Yes this native of Mindoro is also a humanbeing that smiles, laughs, and sometimes cry. Napakalakasmang-asar nga lang. I share a lot of moments with theman and I find him as one of those few people with aheart. According to people close to him, Rommel Sanchez

is a faithful friend. He listens to problems and makes waysto solve it to the best of his capabilities. This is one of thedifferences of Rommel the president to Rommel thegeneral. During WWII, Gen. Rommel was accused ofbeing unfaithful by conspiring to assassinate his superiorAdolf Hitler. There are other details about the personallife of Rommel Sanchez which I will not elaborate lest Icommit a grave error of crossing the boundary of what isfor public and what is for exclusive consumption. By theway, at 32 yrs. old, standing almost six feet tall, and withthe look of Ben Affleck, Rommel Sanchez is an availablebachelor. In the final analysis, I can safely say that like Gen.Erwin Rommel, Rommel Sanchez in cooperation of theBOT was able to brilliantly manuevered the Associationto reach great heights in serving the alumni and our almamater. In contrast to the General who practiced absolutedictatorship, Rommel Sanchez equipped with reason, faith, love, a lot of common sense, and sense of humor, did with flying colors what is sometimes consideredimpossible: to initiate reforms. At the close of the term ofthe incumbent BOT, the Urban Fox can now rest on hislaurels to celebrate victory, to celebrate the upcominghomecoming. We salute the captain of the ship, the ElPresidente, ROMMEL SANCHEZ for a job well done.

Tamaang binabasa nyo: pagmamahalan. Nakikinita ko natumatayo ang malahibo ng tropa. Tambling ba kayo? Iyanang katotohanan at ito’y nakasulat. “If I speak in humanand angelic tongues but do not have love, I am aresounding gong or a clashing cymbal. A true Christian is the one who doesn’t waste his time saving here onearth (“NO SPACE FOR CORRUPTION!”). But instead put all his earnings out of his gooddeeds in a more rewarding everlasting life. My support is for Bro. Eddie Villanueva.

BADETTE JODLOMANComputer Science Batch 2002Customer Service Representative-vocativ of E-PLDTMy bases for my presidential bet are his platform for good governance. I just came from a class lecture when Walter Castillo,a former student and now a fellow alumnus, dropped bythe faculty office informing me of the big sale at NationalBookstore. With him were his new collections, a RichardCarlson bestseller and a book entitled “The Little Prince”.Walter said I would definitely like “The Little Prince”. Itis a classic. I did not mind him that much because I thoughtI knew what the book is all about. “Oh ‘The LittlePrince’…The famous line: It is better to be feared than tobe loved, or vice versa?”, I wittingly said to myself. Iused to like the doctrines of Machiavelli but I stopped myadmiration for such radical view on leadership when Istarted reading the “aroma of grace” of Phillip Yancey.Going back to Walter, he showed me the book, at firstsight of the cover I knew there was a mistake. On thecover of the book is a weird looking boy standing on topof a rock looking up at the stars and other heavenly bodies! It is not by Niccolo Machiavelli but someone namedAntoine de Saint-Exupery! And above all, it is not “ThePrince” but “The Little Prince”. Ooopps! Good thing Idid not verbalize my bragging about knowing the book.At the back of my mind, Walter said it is a classic, howcan it be, it’s a children’s book (no offense to thekids)! How did I miss that fairytale in gradeschool? I didnot anymore dare ask Walter about it lest my ignorancebetrays me anew.

I rushed to get a copy of the book just to redeem myselffrom inner humiliation. I just want to point out that Icommitted the error because I was misled to believe that itis a classic. A classic not just another children’s bedtimestory with matching drawings! As I read through thepages, I felt mixed emotions of shame and humility. Yes,the Saint-Exupery’s masterpiece instantly landed on mytop ten hits of amazing books together with the works ofYancey, Fulghum, Carlson, and of course Bob Ongamong others. The story is about a pilot forced to land inthe Sahara dessert. As he desperately attempted to repairthe aircraft a little prince suddenly appeared asking himfor a favor. “If you please—draw me a sheep!”, the littleprince requested. Then on, started the discourses betweenthe narrator and the little prince that magically lead tointerplanetary tales of conceit, loneliness, friendship, andlove. As I mentioned, I felt ashamed. This is because thebook satirically tackles the problems of the youth withgrown-ups. I did not believe that it is a classic because itis a children’s book and, adding insult to injury, I did notbelieve so because it was a kid who said to me that it is a

classic. In the first pages of the book, the narrator saidtalking about his Drawing Number One and NumberTwo, “Grown-ups never understand anything bythemselves, and it is tiresome for children to be alwaysand forever explaining things to them”. It hurts.

I felt humbled as I gradually continue my reading notonly because of my error in judgment whether the bookis classic or not (Before this writing, I believed that suchis a “matter of consequence”) but also due to the fact thatthe story relates some allusions to my own adult existence.Specifically I related to the Little Prince’s first stopover, avery small planet ruled by a king who doesn’t want to bedisobeyed primarily because his orders are reasonable.“For what the king fundamentally insisted upon was thathis authority should be respected. He tolerated nodisobedience. He was an absolute monarch. But, becausehe was a very good man, he made his orders reasonable.”I tend to be like that acting as a royalty ordering this andthat. But unlike the king I sometimes overlook thefeasibility of my orders that often results to my ownfrustrations. The little prince met other characters in hisinter-galactic tour such as the conceited man, a tippler, abusinessman, a lampligther, and lastly a geographer—most of whom represent, in some degree, the senseless

adventures and misadventures in this memorable trip.Eleven Solidarity Groups (A-K) made up of 28 delegatesfrom the eleven participating countries mixed togethermade for some very interesting interactions. I owe muchto the AYL of Thailand – Pasupha Chinvarasophak a.k.a.P’Muang in making our SG – J active and desirous tolearn from each other and work as a team.

If you want the full story, I am very willing toshare you the details and show you my two albums. I willeven visit the different national websites with you andintroduce you to Wan Shamsulariffin of Malaysia, TanSock Gim of Singapore, Hendra of Indonesia, Huyn VanSon of Vietnam and more. They would be very happy tomeet more Filipino friends.

And of course, I will introduce you to ourcompatriots – Chris from Bicol who led the Ship’sDiscussing Committee, Joy from Negros who wascrowned Ms. Nippon Maru, Drew from Ilocos and Anangfrom ARMM who were elected Most Popular ParticipatingYouths (PY). I must admit that our national delegationexceeded many expectations though we ended up withsome twists of our own too.

Despite my protestations to the contrary, I guessI’m still SSEAYP-sick to a degree. Experts explain thatonly a constant retelling of SSEAYP stories to interestedparties could help alleviate this sickness. No known curehas yet been discovered.

P.S. Application for 31st SSEAYP is only untilFebruary 27. If you don’t make it on your first try, do tryagain. I did.

pursuits of adults for power, fame, vanity and even shame. This again is a personal reminder as I trudge the path ofadulthood. I cannot demand for societal moral recovery(as of this writing our political leaders are throwing mudat each other) if I myself am as guilty (of apathy) as ourpoliticians.

As the story progresses, the little prince found himselfin his last stop over: planet earth. At this juncture, onecan obviously notice the philosophical thoughts that canbe found in the dialogues of the characters. The discoursesof the little prince with the snake, the fox, the rose, andthe narrator speak of truths about life, friendship, and evenlove. Antoine de Saint de Exupery carefully managed toremind me of the basics of life, relationships, of true love. The snake for a brief moment gave bits of pieces aboutlife and how can it be easily ended while the wise fox setthe step-by-step how- to-do- it- guidelines for friendship. But my personal favorite is when I was caught red-facedin the highly emotional scene between the little princeand his rose, “Of course I love you,” the flower said tohim. “It is my fault that you have not known it all thewhile. That is of no importance. But you—you have beenjust as foolish as I. Try to be happy…” Wow! For a while,I thought I was watching the whirlwind romance of Romeoand Juliet. The story ends with a sad farewell betweenthe pilot and his little prince. Honestly, I don’t really likethis part of the book. It made me sensitive and tooemotional for a while. The reason perhaps is because I’ma father myself and I have a five-year old boy who keepson nagging me that his paintbrush creation is a duck not acockroach. Sad it may be it still brings a strong messageof hope. A hope based on shared memories, of genuinefriendship. The hope that someday that the little princewill come back.

At this point, let me conclude that Walter is right. YesSaint-Exupery’s “The Little Prince” is a classic in its ownsense. It is what Webster termed as “a work of enduringexcellence”. The 1943-masterpiece transcends ages andgenerations that will remain as one of the best writtenliteratures not only in France but also in the whole world.I say this with conviction for it struck me where it counts,my intellect and emotion. Yes, emotion! Excuse me butyou really have to read the story and process it from theheart. If you really want to enjoy it forget about reading iton the points of view of stylistics (by the way it’s atranslation by Katherine Woods), or traditional literarytheories, or post modernism approaches. Just read it andenjoy the discourses like a five-year old kid would do.To those who have read and to those who will make awise attempt, it is intriguing to note that the author himselfwas a pilot whose Lokheed P-38 vanished over theMediterranean during a reconnaissance mission just a year

before the publication of “The Little Prince”. He mighthave crashed or shot down during the WW II orperhaps…just perhaps the little prince indeed came back.No one knows, Saint-Exupery was never found.____________________________________________About the AuthorThe author has recently co-authored a textbook“Pinaunlad na Pagbasa at Pagsulat” for NationalBookstore.
