Angel i te is a l ight b lue form of a crystal known as anhydr i te, which was discovered in 1794 and

named for i ts lack of water crystal l izat ion. I f th is gemstone is exposed to water, i t becomes gypsum. For th is reason, Angel i te jewelry should never be

worn swimming or whi te in the bath or shower.

As a form of anhydrate, Angel i te is made of calc ium calc i te. I t forms in locat ions where gypsum stones were previously in contact wi th water. When

the water evaporates, the dehydrated anhydrate crystals are lef t behind. Angel i te forms when another form of gypsum known as celest i te is

compressed for mi l l ions of years.

The var iety of anhydr i te known as Angel i te is a relat ive newcomer to the wor ld of gems and

minerals. I t was f i rst d iscovered in Peru in 1987 dur ing the Harmonic Convergence and has quickly

become a favor i te among new-age enthusiasts. I t has s ince been found in many other places

around the wor ld, including Mexico, L ibya, Egypt, Poland, Germany, and Br i ta in.

Typical ly, Angel i te ranges in color f rom pale to medium blue. There are, however, some pieces

that are bluish-white or whi te in color. Some specimens also feature t iny inclusion of red

hemati te. Angel i te is opaque and is most of ten found in the massive form. With a rat ing of 3.5 on

the Mohs hardness scale, i t is a relat ively sof t stone that can be damaged when subjected
