Good Afternoon everyone, and I would want to type, ‘and welcome to the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium’ but of course that’s not possible since our pre-season friendly this afternoon against AFC Wimbledon and Tuesday evening’s against Crystal Palace, two very illustrious opponents indeed, have to be played behind closed doors as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic Government regulations.

Nevertheless, we are delighted to welcome The Dons and the Eagles for our first home fixtures of the season and at the same time in the case of AFC we can recall some very competitive fixtures not too many seasons ago in the Isthmian League. The progress they have made since those days has been legendary with of course one of our own all time favourites Jon Main going on to help them in that progression. You can only congratulate Crystal Palace for their sheer tenacity in having so many seasons in the top flight when too many are quick to write them off. Do read more about the Dons and the Eagles in Matt’s piece where he takes a closer look at both our visitors.

Of course it’s frustrating for the club and for you that we can’t all be together for our first home fixture of 2020/21 but until there is a vaccination or proven medical treatment to cure the virus then the Government will have to continue to take the necessary steps that reduces risk and that includes restrictions on those entering sports stadiums which we have to abide by.

The Prime Minister has indicated that there will possibly be some relaxation that will allow supporters back into watch games from the beginning of October which dovetails nicely with the National League’s announcement that the campaign will commence on Saturday 3rd October. We must all work hard to try and achieve that if possible and the severe restrictions in place this afternoon are all part of a process that will hopefully get us to that stage successfully.

Even to organise training for our players has required us to confirm to The National League that a significant number of regulations are in place to maintain everyone’s safety and security and that this will not in any way be compromised.

We have then moved to Playing Behind Closed Doors which has of course increased the number of requirements not least that representatives from AFC Wimbledon have had to make a personal visit to The Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium to confirm that they are happy with the arrangements we have set up. It’s good to report they were happy otherwise todays game would not have been going ahead.

We shall then of course move to Playing Matches with Spectators, but we are still waiting from The National League on exact guidance on how they expect us to operate. Without trying to second guess what they will want clearly the key piece of the jigsaw will be attendance and how that is managed including probably some kind of Track and Trace requirement.

Let’s, if we possibly can for a moment, move away from Covid 19 and say a big thanks to all of you who in some way have helped the club financially during this extraordinary shutdown period. In particular a massive £9,670 has been raised for the pitch fund which is allowing us to proceed with the purchase of those pitch covers that Peter Elves so eloquently described at the special owners meeting back in March. These will provide the pitch with the protection it needs not only from heavy rain but also other potential hazards such as snow and ice. It’s a flexible system that can be adapted to the needs of the pitch and hopefully might even allow our Academy to occasionally use the facility.

Keeping on with the thanks a number of supporters have joined in with the shirt promotion to say thanks to our incredible National Health Service on the home shirts, and The Sustain Foodbank managed by The Tonbridge Baptist Church on those ‘lucky’away shirts. You will of course be able to purchase the replica shirts in the very near future and details will appear on the website.

We will of course be bringing you the latest news of today’s game through various formats, so from the Boardroom it just remains for us to say Stay Safe.

Jim Rowe

The first of our home friendlies sees us welcome to Longmead AFC Wimbledon who are preparing for another season in league one, three divisions above us.

The future is exciting for Wimbledon as they prepare to move back to Plough Lane, the stadium built on the site of the spiritual home of Wimbledon FC. Photos show an impressive ground, a far cry not only from the Kingsmeadow ground they have used since their reformation, but also a ground unrecognisable from the old Plough Lane the Crazy Gang played on as the club made its elevation from non-league football to the top flight of English football.

Last season Wimbledon were deemed to have finished one place outside the relegation zone of league one in 20th place after the table was worked out on points per game, earning them a fifth straight season in the third tier, although it wasn’t so long ago the club were league opponents of ours. For two seasons, 2006/07 and 2007/08 we were both Isthmian Premier Division sides until the Dons won promotion into what was then called Conference South, when they won promotion at the first attempt, the middle of three promotions in four years.

AFC Wimbledon’s manager is former Dons player Glyn Hodges who played more than 200 games for the original club in the 1980s. He’d previously been assistant to Wally Downes before taking over in September last season.

Wimbledon started their pre-season campaign last Saturday with a 5-0 win away to Corinthian Casuals. 17 year old Troy Chiabi scored a 28 minute hat-trick with Nesta Guinness-Walker and Terell Thomas also netting while Alex Woodyard and Ayoub Assal were on target in Tuesday’s win at Leatherhead.

The club have confirmed a few close season signings. Full back Cheye Alexander has joined after two years in the National League with Barnet. The second signing is Alex Woodyard, a midfield player from Peterborough. Woodyard was born in Kent and represented Dartford earlier in his career. Strikers Ollie Palmer and Ethan Chislett have joined from Crawley and Aldershot while Connal Trueman is a goalkeeper on loan from Birmingham.

There are other players with Kent connections. Full-back Luke O’Neill spent two years at Gillingham between 2017 and 2019, Ireland under 21 midfielder Callum Reilly had a loan and a permanent spell at Priestfield as well, and striker Joe Pigott, now 26, played for Bromley, Gillingham and Maidstone United.

Other forward options include Adam Roscrow, in his second season after joining from Cardiff Metropolitan University, where he was in the team which qualified for the Europa League Qualifying Rounds, and Zach Robinson, an 18 year old who has spent time on loan at Basingstoke Town and Leatherhead. Other players to watch could be Anthony Hartigan, a young midfielder who played more than 40 first team games last season, another midfielder Shane McLoughlin who joined from Ipswich, left-back Terell Thomas who started his career at Charlton and Will Nightingale, a central defender who has been at the club since he was eight years old. Until last season their first team also

included ex-Angel Mitchell Pinnock, now with Kilmarnock.

Steve McKimm’s excellent connections at Wimbledon have enabled us to benefit from some fine young players getting valuable experience of mens football in loan spells at Tonbridge, many of whom have gone on to play league football for the Dons. Last season midfielder Jack Rudoni played four games for us in September and October before featuring in eleven first team games for Wimbledon, and striker Tommy Wood scored three in three before the season was ended in March. Before then, loan players from Wimbledon included Paul Kalambayi, Ben Harrison, and David Fitzpatrick. Kalambayi and Rudoni are in the Wimbledon first team squad now.

This is Wimbledon’s third visit to us for pre-season in the Steve McKimm era. In 2015 Nathan Elder scored the winner in a 1-0 Angels win while the following year the two sides played out a goalless draw. The clubs have met six times in competitive football since AFC Wimbledon was formed. The

four Isthmian league games saw us win once away, when Ryan Maxwell, Scott Kinch and Jon Main, later to play for Wimbledon, scored in a 3-1 victory. The Dons won here at Longmead in the February of that season while the two games the following season both ended in 2-2 draws. We’ve also met twice in the FA Trophy with Wimbledon beating us in the second qualifying round in 2006 and in the second round proper in 2008.

Our second home pre season friendly sees us welcome a Crystal Palace development side to Longmead, which means some of the players on show today could well be Premier League stars of the future. Last year, Crystal Palace Under 23s were 9th of 10 in the southern section of the Professional Development League with four wins, four draws and thirteen defeats when the season was halted.

Palace’s Under 23s changed their manager midway through last season. Former Palace defender Richard Shaw started in charge of the side, but it was Shaun Derry who ended the season as manager.

Perhaps the player to watch from the side could be Malachi Boateng. A year ago he was named the club’s under 18 player of the year, but in 2020 he was named under 23 player of the year to mark an impressive two years. The central midfielder told Palace TV: “My aggression has improved, my second ball, and my shooting as well” while Derry said “He shows aggression, quality on the ball, wins the second ball and can dictate play.”

In goal for the Under 23s is Oliver Webber, a Northern Ireland Under 17 international who spent a spell on loan at Greenwich two seasons ago. Their defence includes Tyrick Mitchell, who made his Premier League debut after lockdown against Leicester, Nikola Tavares, a Croatian/South African centre-back, Sam Woods, who featured in the first team in the Carabao cup last season, Jay Rich-Baghuelou, who spent a spell at Welling last season, and Ryan Inniss, who has had loan spells at a number of clubs including Gillingham.

In midfield Nya Kirby was a part of England’s under 17 world cup winning squad, Jack Giddings joined this summer from West Ham following a successful trial, Luke Dreher was given a first team debut on the final day of the 2018/19 season, Giovanni McGregor had a loan spell at Dartford last season, and Scott Banks, who’s featured for Dundee United, Clyde & Alloa Athletic.

Finally up front Brandon Aveiro scored six goals in seven starts for the under 18s last season, Robert Street hit more than a goal a game and has also progressed to the under 23s, and Brandon Pierrick is the club’s second youngest Premier League player having come on against Norwich City last season a few days after his 18th birthday. We could perhaps see Josh Ajayi, from the under 18s. Josh joined us for a spell last season, starting five league games and scoring in the Kent Senior Cup away to Folkestone.

It’s not the first time we’ve welcomed a Crystal Palace side for a friendly. They made the occasional visit to the Angel Ground but the most memorable game came in 1998 when more than 2,000 crammed into Longmead for a charity match.

As well as Josh Ajayi’s spell, there are a few tenuous links between the sides. Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson played just under 40 games for Tonbridge in the late 1960s, Neil Emblen, who played for the Angels in the late 80s, played in the Premier League for Palace, and Tonbridge’s record appearance maker Geoff Truett joined us from Crystal Palace in 1962.
