On utilise le preterit lorsqu’il s’agit d’un evenement passe qui n’a plus de contact avec le present, qui est court.
Meanings :
1. Dates, history, memories In 1865 Pasteur discovered the theory of microbes.
2. Action finished at the time of speaking Last week the doctor put me on a course of antibiotics.
3. Past actions whose importance has dwindled She took 2 tablets half an hour ago.

PRETERITE CONTINUOUS :
Il s'agit d'une action passee mais plus longue dans le temps que pour le preterite simple, on a vraiment une notion de durée. On utilise Was/were + ING (he was eating ; they were listening)
Meanings :
1. Simultaneity of 2 actions (in the past) She was calling the ambulance while her husband was giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
2. Actions of different lengths (in the past) The telephone rang while she was giving an injection.
3. Temporary past action Last winter she was expecting a baby.
4. Duration The research team was making quick progress.
Time markers : while, when.
B. Plu perfect
PLU PERFECT SIMPLE :
On peut aussi l'appeler past perfect.Il sert à manifester l'antériorité dans le temps par rapport au preterit (donc quand on parle déjà au preterit).
Had + ed ou Had + 3eme colonne des verbes irréguliers
Le contexte doit être dans le passé pour utiliser le plu perfect !

Meanings :
1. In depth vision of eventsAs soon as penicillin had been discovered, certain diseases were eradicated
2. Necessary order of eventsAs soon as he had finished examining the x-ray plates, he phoned for an ambulance.
Time markers : after, as soon as, when.
PLU PERFECT CONTINUOUS :
Comme le Plu perfect simple mais avec une notion de durée dans le temps.
Meanings :
1. In-depth vision of events (emphasis on duration)The anaesthetist had been working for 15 non stop when the incident occurred
2. Emphasis on durationResearchers had been trying to find a cure for diphtheria for years and years when they finally came up with a vaccine
Time markers : when, after, for a long time, during this period.

Rappel : Jusqu’a « et demi » on utilise PAST, puis apres « et demi » on utilise TO. On utilise o'clock que pour une heure fixe, jamais avec PAST et TO.
