Spring is in the Air Or is that just rushing water?
With over 100 waterfalls in the county and 90 in the Porkies, water is rushing! Best viewing occurs from late April through June during the final stages of the winter melt down. All that water gives new life to the budding wildflowers of the area. Trillium cover the forest’s floor, rare wild orchids lady slippers, Dutch-man’s breeches and Indian Pipe abound. And the old growth hem-lock and white pine are easy to spot on your spring hike.

Lake Superior’s shoreline in Ontonagon County has been acclaimed by Organicstyle magazine as one of the 8 cleanest beaches in America! So clean that the average underwater visibility is 27 feet! Lake Superior is not only the cleanest but it is also the biggest and deepest freshwater Lake by surface area. There is enough water in Lake Superior to flood all of North and South America at a depth of one foot. It may be chilly but worth the dive!
Whether you are an advanced hiker or hiking chal-lenged be sure to stop in at the Porcupine Moun-tains Visitors’ Center. If you are not ready to hike, how about viewing where you could be? Get ac-quainted with the largest park in Michigan viewing the 12-minute video, wildlife displays, maps, sign out a bird watching kit or fishing pole, meet the rang-ers, get trail recommendations, Interpretive Hike schedules, and day programs for adults and fami-lies, such as geochaching, letterboxing & archery. The hiking trails range from ADA accessible to steep and rugged for an extreme experience. The forest is a wealth of flora beauty and a treasure of geological wonders that are home to magnificent wildlife.
A Trip to the Park Make the Visitors’ Center your first stop!
The Friends of the Porkies, www.porkies.org, sup-port the Park and many of the programs that are designed with you in mind! They are active partners who contribute greatly to the improvement of the Park and represent the interest of all users. You can help by becoming a member, visit the website for more info! Some of the Friends’ programs include:
Folk School and Workshops
Workshops from Felted Loon to Handmade Lotion are offered year round
Artist-In-Residence Program (AIRP) Artists spend their time absorbing the natural beauty of the Park and create a piece of art that will be left behind for all to enjoy.
Porcupine Mountains Music Festival Three days of eclectic music always the weekend prior to Labor Day weekend. www.porkiesfestival.org

Need More Trails to Hike? Don’t miss the Ottawa!
The almost one million acres of the Ottawa National Forest are located in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Forest extends from the south shore of Lake Superior to the Wisconsin border. The area is rich in wildlife viewing opportunities; breathtaking views of rolling hills dotted with lakes, rivers and wa-terfalls. An added bonus the Ottawa includes part of the nationwide North Country Trail. For more information: fs.usda.gov/ottawa; northcountrytrail.org
