Prayer for Discipleship Christ, whose insistent call disturbs our settled lives:

give us discernment to hear your word, grace to relinquish our tasks,

and courage to follow empty-handed wherever you may lead,

so that the voice of your gospel may reach to the ends of the earth. Amen.

Prayer of the Day:

God of mercy,

you are full of tenderness and compassion,

slow to anger, rich in mercy, and always ready to forgive:

Genesis 12: 1—4a 1 Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

Psalm 121 1 I lift up my eyes to the hills: but where shall I find help? 2 My help comes from the Lord: who has made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer your foot to stumble: and he who watches over you will not sleep. 4 Be sure he who has charge of Israel: will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord himself is your keeper: the Lord is your defence upon your right hand; 6 The sun shall not strike you by day: nor shall the moon by night. 7 The Lord will defend you from all evil: it is he who will guard your life. 8 The Lord will defend your going out and your coming in: from this time forward for evermore.

Romans 4.1-5, 4.13-17 1 What then are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? 2 For if Abra-ham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ 4 Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. 5 But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. 13 For the prom-ise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 If it is the ad-herents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there vi-olation. 16 For this reason it depends on faith, in or-der that the promise may rest on grace and be guar-anteed to all his descendants, not only to the adher-ents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, 17 as it is written, ‘I have made you the father of many na-tions’)—in the presence of the God in whom he be-lieved, who gives life to the dead and calls into ex-istence the things that do not exist.

Matthew 17:1-9 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. 3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I[a] will make three dwellings[b] here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved;[c] with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” 8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.

9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Brothers and sisters, As you are aware there is a virus going around at the moment which is causing some significant concern. As a result the Bishop has given a directive that we are not to shake

hands during the passing of the peace and greeters should not shake hands of those who are entering the church either. As a further precaution we will be receiving Communion in one kind for the foreseeable future. I will do my best to keep you up to date on these issues and we will return to our normal practice as soon as we safely can. I ask that you join with me in praying for the people who are suffering from the effects of this virus. I also ask that we pray for common sense to prevail and that panic doesn’t take hold. Whilst this is a new virus and we should be taking reasonable steps to prevent its spread as outlined above, we do not need to be panicking. It appears that the vast majority of people (circa 98%) who get the virus recover with no issues. We can also take reasonable steps to ensure we are prepared at home in the event that a quarantine period is needed. This should really just mean ensuring you have enough food in the freezer and pantry to get through two weeks. Stocking up on toilet paper is a reasonable step—but the scenes of people filling trolleys taking dozens and dozens of rolls is ridiculous. Again a quarantine period would be approximately 2 weeks. Finally be praying for those who are working to find a cure and those medical staff who are caring for the sick. God bless you this week,
