PRIEST-IN-CHARGE REPORT.

I am grateful to the wardens who have always written a very comprehensive report of the parish and its

activities that allows me to concentrate on other parts of Parish Life. See pages 5-9. I also want to thank Kay

and Marcia for their dedicated support throughout the year, especially during some of the more difficult times.

St Mary’s continues to grow and find its particular place within the diversity of the Anglican Communion in

this City. See the statistics on page 10. In the Pathways model there are seven key stages in helping new

parishioners grow into leadership in the parish. People typically move through the following:-

Contact with the parish then being in touch, then Belonging and Embracing the Gospel. We are then encouraged

to Follow Jesus, Serve in ministry and eventually Lead Ministry. Being on the Pathways journey for the last 18

months, has helped the Parish focus on the importance of ‘Embracing the Gospel’.

Some of the ways in which this is being addressed is through the Pilgrim Course modules; and offering

Education for Ministry, EfM, which will start after Easter in 2018. I am a national trainer for mentors of the

EfM programme and I will be a co-mentor for the new group that is being started.

St Mary’s continues to be a place where people worship in an historic building, with traditional organ music and

are able to ask questions of their faith. Over the years that I have been here I have been encouraged by a deep

commitment of many parishioners. There is a love for the building, for our worship and a longing to share that

with others.

In 2018 the Archbishop is encouraging parishes to develop intergenerational ministry. The Diocese will be

offering resources to attract and minister to children and young people, not as separate groups but as part of the

normal life of the parish. Our Christmas Eve service, designed for children, continues to grow. There are a

number of models for ways to include children in occasional or regular services that St Mary’s would profit by

being involved in what the Diocese is offering. While there is a good connection with those coming to be

married, there is more the parish could do to assist those who come to St Marys to have their children baptised.

I am a National trainer for Prepare-Enrich which is a preparation programme for couples preparing to be

married or at any stage in their marriage. All couples coming to St Mary’s are offered this preparation.

The Church is left open on most days to provide a place to pray and visit. Some people have become

parishioners as a result.

The Parish Council has grappled with key issues of Governance, accountability finance, child protection. It has

been well served by Glenda’s financial input. Now that the parish has accurate comparative records for a couple

of years it is in a position where it can make timely financial decisions. The Parish is also appreciative of the

long serving administrative work of Kym Markwell. The financial position of the parish is covered in detail in

the following reports. A budget for the coming year will be presented at the AGM.

The number of weddings celebrated in Churches across Australia continues to decline. St Mary’s has also

experienced this decline. Much effort is put into each wedding from many people at St Mary’s. The Drinks on

the Lawn team have once again provided a valuable contribution to those being married. This service continues

to be appreciated by the family and guests at the weddings and meeting people from our congregation serving

drinks is a way new people have connected to our church. The team served at 14 of the 27 weddings that were

celebrated at St Mary’s. One initiative in 2017, to try to connect with brides, was to create an Instagram

following, showing the various styles of weddings that can take place here at St Mary’s. Four regular members

of our congregation were married at St Mary’s in 2017. These were all wonderful occasions as some were

baptised and/or confirmed as part of the preparation for marriage. Most of these have unfortunately for St

Mary’s now moved to other cities, and interstate. It was particularly moving to be part of the wedding of

Amanda and David and to be included in their generosity.

4 ST MARY’S ANNUAL REPORTS 2017

During 2017 three new sets of windows were installed into St Mary’s. They were:

the windows in the Chapel remembering those lost on the Matafele; the windows in the Baptistery honoring

Mrs Doreen Klease; and the windows in north nave remembering Robert Douglas and family.

Each of these had a unique story and were appropriately celebrated with a blessing during the 9am Sunday

Service. Much effort goes in to the unique design of each set of windows, to ensure the visual effect, symbolism

and the placement of that window within the church. The parish gives thanks for the generosity of all who

contributed to these windows.

I attended the Clergy Summer School in January and the Western Region Conference in August. These

conferences provide in service training, an opportunity to be with other clergy and see what happens in

different parishes and schools and opportunities to reflect on how to preach at St Mary’s. I have also been the

beneficiary of coaching which has been sponsored by the Diocese. This has helped me focus on what is

important and possible for the parish.

This year our Synod met in September after many decades of meeting in the middle of the year.

I was elected the Chair of Committees for Synod. This could be considered the second most senior position at

Synod after the Archbishop as I have to chair the committee sessions. That means I must be across all that

happens at Synod. I will have this role for three years when the Deputy Chair hopefully will be elected to this

position. Other Diocesan positions I hold are a member of Diocesan Council, and as a result a member of the

Audit and Risk Committee and Response committee to the Royal Commission.

I took 5 weeks long service across October /November. Marie-Claire and I took the opportunity to visit family

members in France and Belgium. This trip also provided opportunities to visit Churches and religious sites

across Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Zurich parishioners and Hong Kong. Some of those insights were

shared with the congregation when we returned and the information gathered will be useful in the times ahead.

The special services that we provide throughout the year are also ways that our congregation connects with a

wider community. Providing a booklet is a simple way of assisting people unfamiliar with Anglican worship.

Often that takes a large amount of time to ensure it is correct for that particular service. Over the years this

information is carefully built up so that the administration of such occasions is more efficient. Far more

important is the personal welcome that is offered by the congregation on such occasions. I often get comments

about how people feel included but not overwhelmed by our congregation.

We are fortunate to have Canticum continue to offer their Christmas music here at St Mary’s.

I am thankful to all who assist on Parish Council, Liturgical teams, hospitality and welcoming on a weekly

basis. It shows that this is a parish that cares for the stranger as well as one another. St Mary’s parishioners

make regular contributions to the Holy Trinity Parish Pantry and support other organizations, eg Cancer support

& missions.

In January, at short notice, a concert was held at St Mary’s to protest music cuts on Radio National.

On Australia Day we celebrated with Richard and Sue Black as they became Australian Citizens.

The Little Fishes Playgroup has met sporadically throughout the year. In 2018 the parish will have to consider

whether St Mary’s Hall can continue to be the venue for this group which is run by the Playgroup Association

or whether the parish has to take control of this group.

Thanks as always to Marie-Claire for being part of this ministry. Fr Gary Harch

ST MARY’S ANNUAL REPORTS 2017 5

WARDENS’ REPORT

2017 has been a very rewarding year for our faith community at St Mary's. Our congregation is continuing to

grow steadily and through the genuine commitment of so many of us, we have been able to end this year with

great positivity again, even though our finances continue to challenge us.

Ministry and Community

Our ministry and community is strengthened and enhanced greatly by the leadership of our Priest-in-Charge

Reverend Canon Gary Harch and his wife Marie-Claire. Their ongoing presence, on-site, spiritually and

supportively, makes our parish a better place, and for that, we extend our sincere gratitude.

We would also like to extend our grateful thanks to the following parishioners for their generous support and

service, without which, St Mary's would not be able to operate so successfully:

• Liturgy Team

• Phillip and the Choir

• St Vincent's Team

• Volunteer Cleaners and Gardeners

• Readers and Sides Persons' Roster participants

• Morning Tea Providers

• Members of Parish Council and our Treasurer

• Office staff and Volunteers

• Flower Team

• Vergers

• Drinks on the Lawn Ministry Team

• Catering and events Team

• Baptism volunteers

• Little Fishes volunteers

• Friends of St Mary's

• St Mary's continued to be a Pathways Parish during 2017, using the structure of

the Pathway process to guide our planning, thinking, growing and operations. In the words of our Parish

Pathways prayer, we ask God for inspiration “to build a path to grow: in faith; in service; in

encouragement of each other, our friends and acquaintances so that we can develop a larger, more

exciting, reflective, life-giving parish family at St Mary's”. This has proved to be helpful and productive.

Members of our parish will attend a follow up day, organised by the Diocese, on Saturday the 24th

February 2018.

• Bishop Alison presided over a confirmation service in August and met with Parish Council separately

later that month. At this meeting, she shared the data from the Parish Dashboard, helping us to

understand how we compare to other parishes in the Diocese in a number of areas of operation. This

information was then shared with the congregation.

• In addition to our usual services, weddings, baptisms and funerals, we participated in many services and

community events which allowed parishioners, their guests and the general community, to enjoy the

spiritual and historic beauty of our buildings and surrounds. They also brought many new people to St

Mary's including:

Page 6: Anglican Church of Australia marys kp final annual report... · Anglican Church of Southern Queensland. REPORTS for the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING ... I also want to thank Kay ... was

6 ST MARY’S ANNUAL REPORTS 2017

• Service to celebrate Father Colin Cussen's 60th Anniversary of Ordination in February

• Voyager Commemoration Service

• New Parishioners meet & greet

• Scout & Guide Service

• Visit from Bishop Daniel – South Sudan in April

• Patronal Festival in August

• Various music concerts throughout the year organised by Dr Phillip Gearing

• Canticum Concerts

• Friday's at 5 throughout the year

• River Fire in September

• Brisbane Open House

• Blessing of Wardens' wands donated by Andrew Guthrie in memory of his Parents

• Wedding of Amanda Zivkovich and David Romeo

• Parish Council needed to address the issue of security and safety in and around the Church and Rectory

after 4 separate incidents when Police were called to the site to investigate: a fire in March; indecent

actions of a homeless person in November; and a theft in early January. With generous donation by

parishioners, we were able to install extra motion sensitive lighting and security lighting on a time

switch, around both buildings which we hope will deter further incidents. Unfortunately, it did not stop

the theft of copper piping from the river frontage of the Hall in early November which needed to be

replaced. These kinds of incidents demonstrate that we must all be conscious of our personal safety,

especially if we are alone and/or at night.

• On behalf of the parish, we would like to thank Reverend Bruce Henzell for filling in for Gary, while he

and Marie-Claire were on long service leave from 17/10/17 until 20/11/17. It was great to have Bruce

with us for the five weeks, especially to officiate at the funeral of our long-term parishioner, Noel

Perrier, who died unexpectedly in early November. Bruce took Noel's husband John's funeral when he

was the Locum at St Mary's last time.

• In October, Parish Council decided to schedule the mandatory Child Safety training in the first half of

2018, after the new council is established. The Diocese require all parish councillors to undertake this

training every 3 years.

• Due to a review of Governance within National Trust Qld all associated organisations had to stop

accepting tax deductible donations for National Trust building purposes. St Mary's has strengthened its

relationship with National Trust. After re-structuring and reorganisation within National Trust

Queensland's administration of tax deductible accounts, if St Mary’s can comply with the new standards,

then the parish will once again be able to to accept tax deductible donations to maintain our heritage

listed site.

Operations and Maintenance

There was a Working Bee held at the beginning of the year to have a thorough clean-up of the garden and

surrounds. We have been extremely fortunate in having a couple of parishioners volunteer their time to assist

with the maintenance and clean-up of the grounds on a weekly basis. This has saved the parish considerably and

we thank them most sincerely for that.

Two more working bees followed at different intervals throughout the year. One was to lay a load of mulch and

the other to offload a load of soil and place where required.

Through the generosity of parishioners, it has been possible to purchase extra plants, soil and pots to enhance

the surrounds and of course this is always an ongoing project.

Particular thanks must be given to Gordon Dredge for his ongoing commitment and generosity. Gordon is

always willing to help out with the many carpentry repairs and odd jobs that continually come along.

Page 7: Anglican Church of Australia marys kp final annual report... · Anglican Church of Southern Queensland. REPORTS for the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING ... I also want to thank Kay ... was

ST MARY’S ANNUAL REPORTS 2017 7

Other maintenance carried out this year includes:

• Replacement of Hall Oven

• Greg Self altered the bench to enable the new stove to fit

• New photocopier which has more capabilities to reduce workload for a similar price

• Upgrade of Computer systems

• Purchase of 3 Bain Maries to assist with catering functions, 96 new wine glasses donated by

parishioners and a new dinner service purchased with some of the function profits. These items, together

with selected tablecloths and other items will be stored securely so they will always be available, in

good condition, when required for catering.

• Ongoing maintenance of Church lights.

• Cleaning of gutters and installation of Gutter Guard for some areas of the Hall and Rectory

• Refurbishment of Organ pipes using National Trust donations.

• Dishwasher repairs

• Gaming Grant Application $30,000.00 for restoration of plaster work in Sanctuary has been submitted.

Decision on this is still pending.

• Ongoing negotiations with the Diocese to repair damage to the car park.

• Clearing and tidying the hall with the view to marketing more in 2018.

• Letter sent to Little Fishes requesting their help to re-organise resources to clear the stage area.

• Old Church Gate - Negotiations are under way in an attempt to restore and reposition the gate.

• Repairs to railing, replacement of office chair and clothes line as a result of arson attack on rectory.

These were claimed on insurance.

• Signage and promotion – particular thanks must be given to Greg Self for his valuable expertise in this

area and his ongoing generosity and commitment to the life of St Mary's

Finances

Whilst the financial position at St Mary’s continued to be challenging throughout 2017, there was much

positivity generated in the running of the Parish, that not only embraced the hardships the Parish was confronted

with, in this area, but also enhanced the overall outcome in December.

The number of weddings and additional services provided to bridal parties have continued to fall in this year.

Whilst Diocese data tells us that more weddings were celebrated at St Mary's in 2016 than in any other Anglican

parish, this traditional source of income cannot be relied upon into the future.

Fundraising has continued to be a prominent source of income. In 2017 a sub group was formed. Meetings

were regularly held which assisted significantly with planning and organisation for both the continuing

functions and new ideas presented. There was much research and behind the scenes work done in planning for a

Melbourne Cup Luncheon but unfortunately the interest and support were not significant enough to proceed

with such a time consuming and challenging project. The Trivia afternoon was also included in the list of

events with many hours preparation but it too, was not well enough supported to proceed.

The Western Region Dinner (Commencement of Synod) unfortunately was cancelled this year because the

Service at the Cathedral was moved from Friday evening to Sunday Morning.

Overall, through the dedication and hard work of many parishioners and the generosity of the Parish in general,

there was an increase in funds raised. There was also a significant increase in the commitment of parish direct

offerings which assisted the cash flow immensely.

Fund-raising activities held in 2017 included:

• Easter and Christmas Raffles

• Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day Raffles

• Card and Games Day

• Christmas in July—Soup, bread and Desert

• Catering for the Queensland Wader Study Group 25th Anniversary Dinner

• Christmas Lunch

• 2 Suppers following an evening Service in August and Advent Carol Service.

• Carols on the Cliff- Wine and Magnet sales

• River fire Parking

• A number of tours of the Church followed by Devonshire Tea.

• Sale of Christmas Wreathes and Magnets

• Plant stall following the 9am service.

We were very fortunate to have Earl (from Work for the Dole which was implemented in 2016) continue to

assist with office work and general maintenance when required. However, in September Earl was offered a full-

time position which was wonderful for him. It is hoped that St Mary’s will host another ‘Work For The Dole’

programme in 2018. Through regular, voluntary commitment from parishioners, expenses in the upkeep of the

garden and surrounds have been kept to a bare minimum and this is greatly appreciated.

Collection Counting

The aim has been to recruit 2 parishioners each week to count the 7 and 9am collections. We now have a small

group of regular helpers, but we would still welcome anyone who could spare approximately 30 to 45 minutes

after the 9am service. Please see Father Gary or one of the Wardens if you can help.

The counting is now done down in the Hall office and entered into the computer at the same time. It is then

emailed to the Treasurer and banked by one of the Wardens. This method has proved to be more secure and

efficient. It is hoped that we will be able to set up a roster for this.

Growth and Development

Numbers at our services continued to grow gradually throughout 2017 with the commitment and dedication of

new and continuing parishioners ensuring that St Mary's is a viable and sustainable parish.

Many processes and procedures for the operation of the Parish and Parish Council have been developed over the

course of 2017, which have added to better efficiency and accountability. These include:

• Update of Liturgy Team Procedures

• Operational Procedures for Parish Councillors

• Reimbursement of Personal Expenses

• Fundraising & Promotional Sub-Group Procedures

• Collection Counting Procedure

• Welcomers’ Procedures

• Morning Tea Procedures

• A Document describing the Installation of windows into St Mary's

The 2017 council also agreed with the Diocesan “Being Together – Expectations of behaviour in our church

community document” which was tabled, discussed and agreed to by the Parish Council of 2016.

We have seen the installation of the Douglas windows in November and the ongoing negotiation for another

four more windows in the very near future.

ST MARY’S ANNUAL REPORTS 2017 9

During 2017 there was no progress made with the Development project, begun quite some time ago and

championed by Trevor Barrell. This was due to ongoing Heritage and Council approval, restrictions of Trust

issues and Diocese priorities. We note Trevor's resignation from Parish Council in June and thank him for his

tireless efforts, expert advice and many, many hours of work on behalf of our Parish and for his love of this

Place.

Visitors to St Mary's and new parishioners have often commented on the welcoming, loving and supportive

nature of our faith community, over many years. In 2017, these qualities were again evident, and for this, we

give praise and thanks to God, for each other and all our blessings.

We present this report for 2017 for your consideration and information.

MUSIC REPORT CHOIR

As in previous years, I am gratified to receive many positive comments during the year about the choir’s

contribution to our worship, and we continue to strive for consistent quality in our work. Membership has seen

some changes during 2017: Lyn Moorfoot took leave at the beginning of 2017 and has not returned; Will Preece

joined as tenor in August. We were most fortunate to have the assistance of Matt Crossley as alto and/or bass as

required for February-March and May-July; and Laura Haaima (soprano) in July and Harry Hoyland (bass) in

August. Jane Anderssen and Katherine Fellows continued service as Cantors during 2017, joined by Malcolm

Godfrey and, later Jeffrey Black.

24 ST MARY’S ANNUAL REPORTS 2017

We were privileged to be invited to sing Evensong in St John’s Cathedral on 6 August. We have been invited

again to sing Evensong in 2018, on 5 August, and will also be singing in the Lenten Nocturnes series at the

Cathedral on Friday 2 March.

It was a pleasure to welcome again Canticum Chamber Choir to sing the Nine Lessons and Carols (Carols on the

Cliffs) on 17 December.

AUGMENTING MUSICIANS

I record my thanks to Robert Boughen, Emma Hadfield, Greg Mayer and Brett Sturdy who either deputised for

me during absence/illness or played for special services, so I could conduct. It was also a pleasure to welcome

the Sanctuary String Quartet to adorn our worship for the Feast of St Mary (20 August) and the John Coulton

Brass for the Feast of All Saints (5 November).

ORGAN

The National Trust funds set aside for the organ were used during 2017 for preservation of historic material on

the form of cleaning the pipework. The organ now sounds brighter and more immediate in the church but will

need some voicing and regulation as opportunities arise. The depth of touch for the manual keyboards has been

altered from 1.2cm (nearly twice the standard depth) to 0.7cm and is now much more comfortable to play. Ingress

of dirt through the roof of the Swell box still renders speech problems for some pipes of the Swell Cornopean and

(to a lesser extent) the Oboe, but these are dealt with during the regular tuning and maintenance visits.

PIANO

The Boston grand piano continues to give good service and is much admired by visiting musicians. Because it is

now approaching 20 years of age, I asked for a professional opinion on its condition. A few minor items were

identified which should be addressed in due course.

CONCERTS

St Mary’s has happily been the venue for many concerts during 2017 (the income from these concerts supports

the ministry of the church through hire of professional augmenting musicians and tuning of the piano):
