MU THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

STABILITY Stability was one of the precepts underpinning St Benedict’s ideas for living in a world

turned upside down by the fall of the Roman Empire. Stability brings you back to the

centre point when you are wobbling around. A stable body can resist an impact, a

stumble, in the way a rigid or a floppy body cannot. A rigid faith leaves no room for

trust. Lord, keep our feet on the ground and our hearts trusting.

God alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be moved.

Psalm 62:2

Stable family life is encouraged by members of the Provinces of Canterbury and York

in England. Ely and the diocese of Liverpool Mothers’ Union have appointed family and

children’s workers. We give thanks to God for members in Derby who help to restore

families whose stability has been overturned by death, divorce and bullying.

O great Creator, great is the mystery that surrounds You. Yet, when I pray to You - and

I am so insignificant in Your kingdom - You hear my pleas, and I am aware of Your

presence as You respond to me. So I pray, this day, for those who have not walked

Your way, or who do not feel the inner joy of knowing Your son, the Lord Jesus Christ,

that Your light would shine in their hearts to seek You, and find their redemption from

sin. So may it ever be. Amen.

EMMANUEL ANGLICAN COLLEGE PRAYER POINT Pray for Year 12 as they prepare for their HSC Examinations in October.

From the Priest Assistant

For the past several weeks our Old Testament readings have been from the books of Samuel, but who was Samuel? One of my Mid Richmond parishioners asked me this question, and I thought some of you might have the same question.

You may remember the story of Samuel's childhood from your Sunday School days. Samuel's mother Hannah vowed that if she had a son she would dedicate him to God’s service, and God answered Hannah’s prayer. (The name Samuel means “God has heard”.) So Samuel spent his childhood serving God under the high priest, Eli. One night, a voice called Samuel. It wasn't Eli calling, as Samuel thought. It was God. Eli told Sam-uel that he should respond like this: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Now things really started to get interesting! God announced that Samuel would succeed Eli as high priest. Incidentally, this also meant Samuel would be the leader of Israel. The little boy whose mother dedicated him to serve God became the leader - the judge - of his whole nation. In fact, Samuel was the last of the judges, and he became the bridge for his nation, taking them from the rule of the judges to the rule of kings. It was Samuel who appointed and anointed both King Saul and King David.

Amazing things happen when we say “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

PS Here's a piece of trivia: Samuel is one book in Hebrew, not two. When it was translated into Greek the resulting book was so large, it was divided into two for convenience. The Christian Bible has continued with this tradition.

FAITHFULNESS IN SERVICE AND SAFE MINISTRY WORKSHOPS

Both Faithfulness in Service workshop (2 hours) and Safe Ministry workshop (full day) need to be completed each 3 years. Those who attended the courses in 2015 or before will need to attend this year as a refresher workshop. Below are details of those who need to participate in either or both workshops. There will be some who need to attend for the first time as their circumstances and level of involvement has changed e.g new employee, recent Op Shop worker or supervisor.

Faithfulness in Service Workshops: Faithfulness in Service is a general code of conduct that has been adopted across the Anglican Church of Australia. It is applicable to all church workers, whether the person is paid or not paid for their involvement. Church workers are to participate in authorised full training or refresher courses every three years. It is a Diocesan requirement that the following people must participate in a training course: Clergy and Licenced Lay Ministers; Members of Parish Council; Paid employees; All leaders or coordinators of parish ministries e.g MU, Op Shop All leaders and helpers involved in family and children’s ministry People contact ministries e.g. officer volunteers, Op Shop workers, hospital and aged care visitors. Planned Workshops: St Mary’s Church Function Room Tuesday 21 August– 1pm to 3pm Saturday 25 August– 1pm to 3pm. Enrolment form at the back of both churches, Parish Office and Op Shop– available from next week.

Safe Ministry Workshops: What is it? Through the National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA) the Anglican Diocese of Grafton has become a participant in the Safe Church Training Agreement with the aim of making all church environments safer for the people that use them. While Faithfulness in Service is a personal code of conduct for church workers, the Safe Church approach is for churches to make their activities and programs safe for all. The Safe Ministry training programs include modules on: · Key concepts in protecting vulnerable people · Child protection and vulnerable people · Christian Leaders – Good practice guidelines for safe leaders · Safe programs To whom does it apply? For Safe Church principles to be widely applied, it is important that the leaders within the church are well trained in this area. The Bishop-in-Council has determined that those who need specific training are the following leaders within the church regardless of whether the person is paid or not paid for their involvement: · Holders of a license issued by the Bishop (this includes clergy and LLMs); Paid employees; · Members of Parish Council; · All leaders of Family, SRE, Youth or Children’s Ministry or similar; · All leaders or coordinators of parish ministries; · All leaders of street ministry, hospital visiting, aged home visiting, Op Shops supervisors and other people contact ministries.

Planned Workshops: Friday 17 August– Tweed Heads: 9.30am to 4.00pm (Max. 50) Saturday 18 August– Lismore: 9.30am to 4.00pm (Max. 50) To register your attendance at one of these workshops please telephone Linda at the Bishop’s Registry on (02) 6642 4122 as soon as possible. The Parish will pay for your attendance.
