Reflection on Pentecost XVI

Ngaala kaaditj Noongar moort keyen kaadak nidja boodja. [We acknowledge Noongar People as the original custodians of this land.]

How angry they must have felt when they saw the

late-comers receiving exactly the same wage.

“Shall I not be paid for my exhaustion?

Is there no justice in this world?

How destructive this landowner is!

Doesn’t he realise he is feeding the fires of revolution?

If people think they can get something for nothing - or

at least for very little - the whole principle of rights will

be lost.

The late-comers will begin by being grateful … but they

will end by taking over the vineyard.

As God is my judge, I demand justice!”

One would have to be very sure of oneself to demand justice of

God. How could one survive the claims of the Divine justice

unless one was sinless? It is better, always, to see the claims

of God’s rights over us give way to what God really wants to

show us about himself.

God is infinitely generous, accepting, as equal children, both

the saint and the sinner who nevertheless perceives their

unworthiness and are amazed that they have received any

wages at all.
