GATHERING IN GOD'S NAME

HYMN: Father of Heaven

All Father of heaven, whose love profound, a ransom for our souls has found, before your throne we sinners bend; to us your pardoning love extend.

Almighty Son, incarnate Word, our prophet, priest, redeemer, Lord, before your throne we sinners bend; to us your saving grace extend.

Eternal Spirit, by whose breath, the soul is saved from sin and death, before your throne we sinners bend; to us your quickening power extend.

Thrice holy — Father, Spirit, Son, mysterious Godhead, Three in One, before your throne we sinners bend; grace, pardon, life to us extend.

Edward Cooper 1770-1833

All Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Priest Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

All Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God's people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. THE COLLECT

LA Let us join together in the Collect: All Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ has taught us that what we do for the least of his brothers and sisters we do also for him: give us the will to serve others as he was the servant of all, who gave up his life and died for us; yet lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING: Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67

Reader Hear the word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 48:10-17

LA Hear, O daughter, consider and incline your ear: All forget your own people and your father’s house. The king desires your beauty: he is your lord, therefore bow down before him. The richest among the people, O daughter of Tyre: shall entreat your favour with gifts. The king’s daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is embroidered cloth-of-gold. In robes of many colours she is led to you, O king: and, after her, the virgins that are with her. They are led with gladness and rejoicing: they enter the palace of the king. In place of your fathers you shall have sons: and make them princes over all the land. And I will make known your name to every generation: therefore the peoples shall give you praise for ever.

SECOND READING: Romans 7:14-25

Reader Hear the word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

HYMN: Father of Mercy

All Father of mercy, God of consolation, look to your people, gathered here to praise you: pity our weakness, come in power to aid us, source of all blessing.

THE CREED

LA Let us together affirm the faith of the Church:

All We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYER OF APPROACH

LA Let us pray: All We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

HYMN: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation

All Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation; O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation. Come all who hear, brothers and sisters draw near, praise him in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord who in all things is wondrously reigning and, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining: have you not seen, all that is needed has been sent by his gracious ordaining?

Praise to the Lord, who will prosper our work and defend us; surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend us: ponder anew, what the Almighty can do as with his love he befriends us.

Praise to the Lord, who when darkness of sin is abounding, who, when the godless do triumph , our best hopes confounding. sheds forth his light, scatters the horrors of night, saints with his mercy surrounding.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him. Let the Amen, sound from his people again: gladly for ever adore him.
