This year the Anglicare PNG Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Schools Program ex-tended its activities to the outskirts of the Cen-tral Province. Kalo in the Rigo Coast, Koudorika and Boera along the Mo-tuan Coastline are recipi-ents of the much needed WASH in Schools Pro-gram Facilities. The selection of the schools was done by a survey on the chosen schools by the WASH Coordinator Ms. Issa-bella Warre, WaterAid Country Representative Rick Steel and the WASH Field Officer Kapi Arava. After discussions with the school Head Teach-ers decisions were made to allocate the project to schools upon merit of the urgent need for the fa-cilities. Hygiene, Health and Safety standards of students and staff was a main part in allocating the project to the selected schools. The schools will receive under the WASH Program, VIP Latrines or pit toilets, Water Catch-ments and Hand Wash-ing Facilities for use by the students and staff of

the respective schools.

Kalo Primary School upon visitation by the WASH Field Officer was in a very dire need of the facilities. According to the Senior Teachers they have been somewhat ne-glected by authorities, but only recently under a Special Program by the Education Department had they received teach-ing Aid and school mate-rials. Anglicare PNG Inc. WASH Field Officer Mr. Kapi Arava conducted a two part training to clar-ify to the students and

staff that the project was

not an initiative of the Government but that of a local NGO supported by the Australian Govern-ment through their De-partment of Foreign Af-fairs and Trade (DFAT) Aid Program. After the introductory session and awareness on WASH ac-tivities Mr. Arava ran an activity for the student representatives and the Teachers to form a school WASH Committee. Ac-cording to the WASH Of-ficer “This will enable the care of the facilities and

the sustainability of the

project in the long run” he said. Anglicare WASH Program has so far pro-vided such facilities in the following Primary and Elementary Schools - Barakau, Lealea, Christ the King (ATS), Oso-bea Elementary (Goldie) and Marinae Elementary School (Tokarara). There are four more recipients (schools) of the Angli-care WASH project in the Central Province who are earmarked for the project in the coming months.

WASH in Schools Program extends as far as Rigo Coast and the Motuan Coastline.

My name is Rose Tu-mange and I am from Pangia District in South-ern Highlands Province. My journey of life started when I was 17 years old. I am from a family of 3 brothers and sisters. My life with my family and my siblings was great. We had a caring fam-ily and I was an obedi-ent child. I took part in church activities and community activities and then I was forced to get married to a man in 1996 which he offered a good amount of bride price and also resided in Port Moresby. He had a trade store and worked for a taxi company. But af-ter 4 years, our marriage broke apart leaving me with one child and him with another child. I had to go back to my fam-ily and live with them in Pangia. Back in my vil-lage there was no one to fend for my child but me alone in day to day needs so I had to leave Pangia and come to Mt Hagan

Town in 2003 to look for money and things to send to my child back home. To look for money or a place to stay was not that easy so I become a female sex worker (FSW) to get money to pay for rent as well as my needs and for my child. I would get on big highway trucks and PMV buses to Lae and Goroka to earn money. For 3 years I had been an FSW without the knowl-edge of correct usage of condom and the modes of HIV transmissions in-cluding STI’s. I knew lit-tle about HIV as a killer disease. I was also a Drug user and had been addict-ed to drugs and home-brew. I was very sick in 2006 and was brought to the hospital but did not get well. I continued to get sick more often and was about to be bed lad-en when I heard about the Voluntary Confidential Counselling and Testing done at Tiniga clinic. I went for a HIV test and I was tested positive to

HIV. I was really afraid and also thought of how I would approach my fam-ily and my child. But the counselors who tested me provided counseling as help for me to be strong for myself and for my child. The counselor who brought me to life showed me how to live a positive life and I thank him for his support. He is Pr. Allan Kuma from Anglicare PNG Inc. Mt Hagen. He never lost hope in me and continued counseling me until I quit taking drugs and home-brew in 2009, along with some of the risky behav-iors I practiced. From that day on I have always given credit back to Anglicare for saving my life. Pr. Allan en-gaged me as a volunteer and I had been a volun-teer from 2010 to 2012 (2 years). I was fully em-ployed by Anglicare in 2012 as a positive advo-cator, which I still am do-ing this and spreading the word of the good work that Anglicare is doing for PNG. My last word of thanks goes to Pr. Al-lan Kuma and the coun-seling team for showing me a positive sense of living life and Anglicare for the Job opportunity to look after my family. An-glicare is doing a lot of good work and God will bless the work in PNG.

Thank you,

According to Mr Cliff Rombok the branch was in the process of setting up a fully-fledged drop-in centre for PLHIVs when we changed our fo-cus to MARPs. Rose had a great input since Janu-ary, 2013 in bringing in FSWs who had HIV and were not on treatment. Her outreach work is very effective as she is able to identify and bring in FSWs for clinical checks and follow-ups even if they have been reached by others already. She conducted educa-tional sessions with nutri-tional feeding programs for FSWs. The team focussed on creating an enabling environment for the FSWs. Until recently, more and more FSWs are freely coming to come to us as they know we care for them.

“Everyone has the right to learn, nothing is too late”This was the mes-sage given by a special guest at the Faole SDA Adult Literacy School presentation at Eri-ma in the Nation’s Capital recently.Ms. Jasmine Simy-unn Country Direc-tor, for the Advent-ist Development and Relief Agency (PNG ADRA) said during her speech that nothing in life was easy but there are always solutions to every problem. “Put God first and you as the individual will make the changes in life to make a change and solve your problems, the spirit in you makes you overcome your challenges” she said. The presenta-tion was an initia-tive of ADRA PNG through Anglicare PNG Inc. as it had created a partner-ship with the Faole

SDA Church to start an Adult Literacy Centre to cater for the Church mem-bers and also the surrounding com-munity of Erima.Mr. Gideon Mii, Chairman of the Faole SDA Adult Literacy School was full of praise for the assistance given by ADRA PNG as it would ease the load of students per class. He said that adult

learners currently numbered 33 who are taking classes within the church building. Mr. Mii added that with the donation of can-vasses and white boards, they can now have classes outdoors. He said he wanted the com-munity through the church to take own-ership of the Adult Literacy School so that there would be progress in years

to come, and one being the sugges-tion to open anoth-er Adult Literacy School for the com-munity of Erima as a whole.A female learner thanked Anglicare and ADRA for the timely donation but also raised the ques-tion to what their future was when they completed their final level 3. “Saposmipla finis lo levol 3 bai mipla

go wer?” She added that they wanted to continue their edu-cation but did not know the proce-dures involved.Branch Manager for Anglicare Port Moresby, Mr. Ber-nard Paru gave an assurance that the Faole Literacy School learners were more than welcome to enter the Anglicare Adult School and Angli-care would help in finding a placing in FODE for those who did well and wished to further their education in Technical and Vocational Train-ing Institutions (TVET). Ms. Gloria Numa a Program Coordinator for ADRA was pleased at the progress of the Adult Literacy School and also gave her insight to the importance of learning and seek-ing further educa-tion.

Anglicare Popondetta witnesses Isoge Adult Lit-eracy School’s first graduationStory and photograph by Peter Tawae PaineIsoge Adult Literacy School had its first gradration after establish-ing the school a year ago. The first 40 students fromt the 50 to-tal students passed on from level zero and will advance to level 1 next year. The school was established by a mothers union leader, Leila Jo-hiro (TIC) when seeing the need of the mothers, after attending the teacher training conducted by Anglicare Popondetta at Dipoturu village returned and mobilsed her community to build classrooms and established the school. The school registered 120 students when established, however when Anglicare Popondeta was go-ing through financial constraints, 70 students decided to leave and move on while 50 students faith-fully grasped the opportunity and on the 30th of September 2014, the school witnessed its first 40 students graduate. The students testified expressing their gratitude saying they could now read and write. Among them was a former criminal who said that Literacy is changing his life and giving him hope to see a brighter day dawning in his life and urged other adults to attend literacy classes. The school now has 6 teachers headed by Lei-la Johiro who is from New Ireland and Married to an Isoge man (Oro). Higaturu Local Level Government ward members were invited to the graduation including the Commu-nity Developent Office, the Oro Province Division of Education and Anglicare Literacy team and Operations Manager Mr. Stephen Raurela. During the speach, Com-munity Development Officer, Mrs

Rose Noah had the opportunity to advocate on child protection. Carson Taylor Evari stressed the importance of Literacy in his fol-lowing speech, “Literacy refers to communicating, meaning through marks that serve as alphabet writ-ten on a surface such as paper, a chalkboard, the ground or other surface on which messages may be written. Print literacy is not new to PNG and the Northern Province; there have been literacy classes for more than 25 years- usually in the vernacular most of this litera-cy efforts were conducted by and the cost met by the missions and churches. Most of the time gov-ernment did not help and did not interfere.PNG has 832 languages, more than any other nation in the world, of this 832, 17 have less than 50 speakers, one is an international language and two are pidgins. In addition to this 832 language, 10 more are extinct or dead; this part of PNG’s heritage is gone forever- usually without a written record. Completely lost. This must not be

allowed to continue. Literacy is not just reading and writing, it is about learning, thinking, critiquing and expanding vision; it is about encouraging a desire for life-long learning in all Papua New Guin-eas and equipping them with the skills to fulfil that desire. Research shows the literate parents raise bet-ter educated and more successful child who are less likely to end up in poverty or prison. The operations manager Mr Stephen Raurela encouraged the community and students to tap the potential within each individual to bring about change and live a pur-poseful life as God intended.Besides Isoge, Anglicare Popon-detta witnessed the graduation for its 5 CSO adult literacy schools. Isuga graduated 87 students in to-tal, 5 in level 1,14 in level 2 and 42 in level 3, Dipoturu graduated 17 in level 1 and 11 in level 3 while Iyoivi and Wawanga garaduated 43 and 42 respectively.

A success Story from the

ANGLICARE Adult Liter-acy Centre in Port Moresby Sarah Tule a proud student of Anglicare Adult Literacy School.During the celebrations of the National Literacy Week in September there were a lot of success stories, of the many Anglicare had one to share with all the partners present during the opening of the Literacy week beg-ging on the 8th and ending on the 12th of September, 2014.Sarah tells us her story.I never went to school and stayed home just doing nothing, feeling hopeless and no sense of belonging. I always thought to myself of letting myself down and having self-pity on myself. I couldn’t see a bright future ahead on me. But through

my faith in God and with

the prayers I made, God an-swered my prayers. In today’s world money is the everyday language, when there is money, you buy food, clothes, you go to school or buy anything that you wish for. As a child growing up it was hard and that hardship caused a feel-ing of emptiness in me be-cause seeing my friends go to school was burdening be-cause I couldn’t. I felt sorry for myself. But that did not stop me from praying and my prayers comforted me and the tears I shed washed away the pain and suffering inside of me.I always asked in my prayers for one thing, that was to go to school. Then one day after church serv-ice someone approached me and offered to take me

to Anglicare, which I had

no idea at all who they were and why I should go there. So I was taken to Waigani behind the Mobil Service Station. I didn’t know this place, I only stayed home so this would be an adven-ture I thought to myself. On Monday I got on the bus and was brought to Anglicare. I was introduced to the Adult Literacy Teachers and told of what the Centre offered to youths like myself so ea-ger to learn to count and to read and write.Once I set foot in the An-glicare gate, I told myself that I was not going to go away until I accomplished my goal of getting an edu-cation here at the Anglicare Adult Literacy School and to graduate. I would like to be a doctor because of seeing the need

in the country and I would like to help others.I now feel that I am some-body. I have completed my grade 8 which I believe is an achievement in my life. I completed my FODE which the formal Educa-tion System offers and I am currently an Elementary Teacher, teaching the basics of what I learnt at Anglicare to little children and they look up to me as an Edu-cated person passing on to them the learning Anglicare gave to me. I thank Anglicare, Angli-care is special and it has a special place in my heart no matter where I go, Angli-care will always be in my heart.

PNG’s adult literacy situ-ation is in dire strait. Lit-eracy situation analysis conducted by the NLAS in 2008 showed adult literacy rates recorded at 56 percent (2000 Census). When com-pared to other countries, PNG’s adult literacy rate is regarded as one of the low-est in Asia and Pacific. This is the reason why PNG was identified by UNESCO as one of the 35 countries that required urgent attention to improve its adult literacy rates.http://www.education.gov.pg/NLAS/Literacy_in_PNG-NLAS.html
