Definitions and Phases of Mentoring

Phases Features of each phase

Planning • getting acquainted• exploring reasons for wanting to be in a mentoring relationship• clarifying expectations within the relationship

Initiating • negotiating and agreeing on learning goals, content and process• overcoming awkwardness and getting beyond first impressions• determining preferred learning styles• committing to a plan for addressing mentoring goals

Facilitating • comfort level reached - the “real work” of mentoring takes place

Transitioning (towards closure)

• preparing for closure through celebration of successes• reflecting on experiences• acknowledging and redefining a transition in the relationship

The term “Mentor” comes from Greek mythology….
