2014 annual report

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” — Mother Teresa

The biggest of changes often begin with one small act.

Sharing knowledge,

lending a hand,

giving a gift.

And where it starts can make all the difference in the world.

Knowledge can empower a community.

Lending a hand can uplift hundreds.

A gift can help thousands.

It starts here1

It starts here

“It starts here” is an excellent phrase to summarize 2014 for the

Foundation. It was a year of growth, and we’re looking forward to

seeing the initiatives that started over the past year having a positive

effect on our community for years to come.

Highlights from the year include:

We funded the first year of the Mayo Clinic Care

Network Partnership. This extraordinary relationship

with the world-renowned Mayo Clinic allowed for

240 of our patients to receive Mayo eConsults without

leaving their own doctor. Our own providers were also

able to use the Ask Mayo Expert service – and did so

over 3,000 times.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room® Campaign was

launched, and we received a capstone gift of $300,000

from the Gerdin Family Foundation, allowing us to

reach our goal and open an endowment for future

capital expenses.

We again surpassed our goal of associate giving

through the iCare Associate Giving Campaign. A record

$361,489 was raised thanks to the generous gifts from

our UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s associates.

The Albert G. & Helen Nassif Radiation Center was named, thanks to

a $500,000 gift from Helen G. Nassif. The Radiation Center is named

in part for Ms. Nassif’s brother, Albert, and is planned for completion

in the fall 2015.

We were recipients of the “Ultimate Gift” from the Ed and Joan

Hemphill Estate. The gift will benefit the Child Protection Center, the

Hospice Inpatient Unit, and St. Luke’s Silver Circle (general fund)

endowments.

Thank you to all of the generous donors who made 2014 such a

successful year for the Foundation. Through your act of giving,

patients and families will benefit, and for that we are truly grateful.

Rural Healthcare Grants

iGrants awarded to 20 departmentsIn 2014, St. Luke’s Foundation

awarded $118,487 to 20

departments through our

iGrant Program. St. Luke’s

Annual Employee Giving

Campaign, iCare, supports

the iGrant Program.

Fit Zone Awarded iGrant for Treadmill and Stationary Bike

As an employer and provider

of health care, it is St. Luke’s

goal to promote a culture of

health and wellness to our

associates. As part of that commit-

ment in 2014, the hospital moved

its fitness center, the Fit Zone,

to a more convenient location

and purchased additional cardio

exercise equipment. St. Luke’s

Foundation’s iGrant Program

played an important role in these

enhancements.

The Fit Zone was

awarded $5,790 for

the purchase of a

new treadmill and a

stationary bike. This

equipment increases

the exercise options

available to associates

while also minimizing

their need to wait.

The convenient loca-

tion and new fitness

equipment will prove

invaluable to our associates, who

are busy caring for their families

and often find it difficult to find

time for themselves.

As a Nephrologist with UnityPoint

Health – St. Luke’s, Dr. Abha

Saxena works with patients

undergoing kidney dialysis treat-

ments at the hospital’s Diabetes

and Kidney Center.

She sees first-hand the rough

road many patients have,

including the increasing costs of

insurance co-pays and transporta-

tion to get to the Center multiple

times a week. When a patient

from Jones County told her it was

difficult to choose between gas

money to make it to treatments,

or buying food for the family,

she knew she wanted to help.

“That’s what got me thinking

that if we could establish a local

fund which could support the

local patients,” says Dr. Saxena.

“There is a Kidney Walk here

in town for the National Kidney

Foundation, but that money goes

to the National Kidney Founda-

tion and research; that is greatly

appreciated, but local people

who need our support are left

behind. That gave me the idea

to see if St. Luke’s Foundation

could help me start this fund.”

Dr. Saxena began by donating

her unused Paid Time Off (PTO)

hours, the value of which was

then funneled to the Foundation.

She then approached some of

her UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s

colleagues about doing the same,

and the new fund was created

with $15,000.

Although it doesn’t yet have

an official name beyond the

“Diabetes & Kidney Fund,” Dr.

Saxena has big dreams for it,

including continuing to help

patients cover out-of-pocket costs

associated with dialysis treat-

ments, but also eventually creat-

ing a Food Bank to help patients

with healthy eating choices.

To raise the money, Dr. Saxena

envisions a 5K run/walk, and

other ways to raise awareness

of kidney disease and the most

common cause of kidney failure

resulting in dialysis: diabetes.

Between 20 and 40% of people

with diabetes develop kidney

disease, but with treatment and

screening, most can avoid devel-

oping kidney failure.

“Kidney disease is projected to

eventually affect one in three

people,” says Dr. Saxena. “I really

want this community to be con-

cerned about this disease; that we

can prevent it by changing our

eating habits and keeping our

weight under control.”

That’s where Dr. Saxena sees

elements like diabetes education

and the Food Bank as essential,

with the fund aiding in preven-

tion as well as assistance

to patients.

Eight patients have already

received assistance from the fund.

Recipients do not have to be a

patient of UnityPoint Health –

St. Luke’s, they can be any

patient living in the community.

Dr. Saxena says she’s excited

to see what 2015 brings, and is

grateful to her colleagues who

donated to get the program up

and running. She hopes even

more UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s

associates will join in donating

their PTO hours and dollars to

the fund this year.

“This is very close to my heart.

If we can make even a small

difference, I will be very happy.”76

exceeds goalSt. Luke’s associates, physicians, volunteers and retirees helped to exceed our 2014 iCare – Associate Giving Campaign goal. Thanks to everyone’s gifts, we raised a total of $361,489, surpassing our goal of $300,000. Since 1986, St. Luke’s associates have given more than $3 million through the employee giving campaign.

“Doing good holds the

power to transform us

on the inside, and

then ripple out in ever-

expanding circles that

positively impact the

world at large.”

— Shari Arison

St. Luke’s Foundation’s Roll of

Honor recognizes those who

have started the ripple effect

of giving with their donation.

All gifts, large and small, can

have a profound effect in our

community for years to come.

Whether your gift will go towards

the creation of a new facility,

necessities for our rural areas,

or even dental care for a child,

know that your generosity will

touch more than just one life,

and for that we are grateful.

The Gerdin family of Solon

has a long history of giving to

charitable causes supporting

children’s health, so when Julie

(Gerdin) Durr first heard about

the new Ronald McDonald

Family Room® planned for

UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s,

she knew it was something her

family would want to be a

part of.

“What prompted us to give to

this project is our love for

children and doing what we

can to try to contribute to their

well-being, and for the comfort

of their families in times that it

is needed most,” says Durr.

Providing comfort to families

is exactly what the UnityPoint

Health – St. Luke’s Ronald

McDonald Family Room® does.

While it’s similar to a traditional

Ronald McDonald House, it’s

located inside the Helen G.

Nassif Center for Women’s and

Children’s Health.

This means the parents and

family members of a critically

ill child don’t have to leave the

building when they need to

shower, sleep, eat, or just take

time to recharge during the

exhausting experience.

The nearly 1,440-square-foot

“home away from home” space

offers families three sleeping

rooms, two shower suites, dining

and living areas, as well as laundry

facilities. A large kitchen area has

a pantry stocked with donated

food and snack items. Meals are

also prepared and served by

volunteers on a regular basis.

There’s also an added bonus to

having family close by during

a child’s hospital stay: research

shows that when family is

present in the hospital and

directly involved in the patient

care, children heal faster and

are better able to cope.

“The Family Room will make a

big difference in the lives of

people and families that will use

it,” said Durr. “I can’t imagine

having a child that is in the hos-

pital for days and having to leave

their side simply because logistics

or finances don’t allow you to

be near them, comfortably.”

The generous donation from

the Gerdin Family Foundation

contributed to both the construc-

tion of the area, as well as an

endowment to support future

capital needs.

The Gerdin family’s legacy of

giving began with Julie’s father,

the late Russell Gerdin, founder

and former CEO of Heartland

Express in North Liberty, and his

wife, Ann. Julie and her husband

Eric, along with siblings and

spouses Mike and Nicole Gerdin

and Angela and Brian Janssen,

have continued to give back to

the community.

“Giving back of your time, talents

or resources to your community

only improves the world we live

in and impacts lives in a positive

way. It is so important to do

what you can to improve our

communities for generations to

come,” says Julie. “I urge every-

one to take a look around their

neighborhoods and give back in

one way or another. Volunteer,

be a mentor, offer resources or

talents that you have to better a

cause or need. Your world needs

you to take care of it.”

Helen G. Nassif’s generosity

continues to transform our health

care community, and is in turn

transforming the lives of those in

the area.

In 2014, Ms. Nassif’s most recent

gift began to take shape: The

Albert G. and Helen Nassif

Radiation Center. Construction

began on the 10,000-square-foot

facility, situated adjacent to the

Helen G. Nassif Community

Cancer Center.

The location of the facility is key

for two reasons: by housing the

center next door to the Commu-

nity Cancer Center – which is

located within the Physicians’

Clinic of Iowa (PCI) Medical

Pavilion – cancer patients will

have all of their care needs in

one convenient location. The

free-standing facility will also save

patients money, due to the dif-

ferences in reimbursement rates

between hospital-based services

and free-standing facilities.

Within the facility, patients will

have access to the most advanced

cancer-fighting technology in the

new TrueBeam™ Linear Accelerator,

which delivers radiation with pin-

point accuracy within a millimeter

to cancers anywhere in the body.

Ms. Nassif’s generous gift which

makes the Radiation Center

possible is the latest in a legacy

of giving by the former Cedar

Rapids resident. Now residing in

Maryland, Ms. Nassif has given

$5.8 million to St. Luke’s Hospital

over the last 14 years. Her most

recent gift created the Helen G.

Nassif Community Cancer Center,

which opened in June 2013. Ms.

Nassif’s generosity has also created:

• The Nassif Heart Center in

honor of her brother, Dr. John

G. Nassif

• The Helen G. Nassif Center for

Women’s and Children’s Health

• The Helen G. Nassif Pavilion,

which updated several areas,

including the Emergency

Department and Surgical areas

The Radiation Center is named

in part for Ms. Nassif’s brother,

Albert, and is planned for

completion in the fall of 2015.

Ms. Nassif’s legacy of giving

started here and continues to

touch the lives in the community

more than a decade later. “I am

fortunate to play a supportive

role in helping the hospital

provide the best care possible

to eastern Iowans,” says Nassif.

The Carl & Mary Koehler Legacy Society was established in 2003 to recognize

individuals who have remembered St. Luke’s Foundation with an estate or

other planned gifts arranged during their lifetime. St. Luke’s gratefully honors

these individuals for their legacy of generosity and caring.

In October 2014, the

Foundation lost a friend

with the passing of

Ed Hemphill.

Ed and his wife Joan were

from Marshalltown, Iowa,

and made their home in

Cedar Rapids after attending

and meeting at Coe College.

They married in 1946. Joan

worked in the business

office at St. Luke’s Hospital

and Ed started his career

at Collins Radio (now Rock-

well Collins), retiring in 1982 after

32 years of service. Ed and Joan

were blessed with twin girls, Lisa

and Lori, and four grandchildren.

Joan, a dedicated mother and

long-time community volunteer,

passed away in August 2009.

The Hemphills’ support of

St. Luke’s spanned more than

three decades, and truly follows

the circle of life. Their generosity

began when they named a

birthing suite in 1979 in honor

of their twin daughters, to 2012

when Ed made the lead gift to

create our community’s first

hospice inpatient unit.

Through the years, the Hemphills’

philanthropy has touched:

• Center for Women’s and

Children’s Health

• Child Protection Center

• Silver Circle (General Fund)

• Heart Center

• Hospice

• Lifeguard

• Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

• Sleep Lab

Ed and Joan made the ultimate

gift by naming St. Luke’s in

their estate plans. Through this

generosity, St. Luke’s Foundation

has placed these funds in

endowments that will benefit

St. Luke’s Child Protection Center,

St. Luke’s Hospice Inpatient Unit

and St. Luke’s Silver Circle

(General Fund).

For 35 years, Ed and Joan

Hemphill were generous

supporters of St. Luke’s hospital.

“It’s just always been our hospital”

was how Ed once described

St. Luke’s when talking about

the importance of supporting

something so dear to his family.

Their story of dedicated giving

to the hospital is truly special.

It’s only through the generosity

of people like the Hemphills

that St. Luke’s can continue to

provide the type of care that

makes it a hospital people want

to call their own.

Compassionate care starts hereAfter Lana Weeks’ mother, Lillian,

passed away, Weeks wanted to

thank the individuals who made

her mother’s final days as peace-

ful as possible – 5Center Inpatient

Unit and Hospice associates at

UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s

Hospital.

The Guardian Angel program

allowed Weeks to do just that.

Families offer a donation of any

size to St. Luke’s Foundation in

honor of a St. Luke’s employee,

doctor, department, or volunteer,

and those individuals are recog-

nized in a special ceremony. The

donation then helps fund pro-

grams and equipment that add to

the quality of care at St. Luke’s.

An excerpt from Weeks’ letter

stated:

“….Mom was 94 years old and

had a terrible internal infection,

but her will to live was totally

intact. We spent one week on

5th floor and received the best

care one could ask for. Two staff

members really shined: Judy Ochs

and Jeremy Gardemann. After

a week, we met Dr. James Bell;

he set us up on the Hospice Unit.

What we found was that Dr. Bell

has created the most wonderful,

caring environment anyone can

imagine for end of life. He put

together a kind and supportive

staff that make the most difficult

thing I have ever experienced in

my life- saying goodbye to my

mother – an act of beauty. We

would like to thank Dr. Bell and

Laurel Foht, Michaela Fishell,

Mandy Gatrelle, and Linda

Schwiebert….”

Guardian Angel recipients can

be recognized more than once,

and for Dr. Bell, this marks his

seventh award. As the UnityPoint

Hospice Medical Director, Dr. Bell

works closely with all involved:

the patient, the patient’s family,

and the patient’s doctor, to ensure

patients and their families receive

assistance with all of their end-

of-life needs, including symptom

and pain management. Dr. Bell

is involved in everything from

patient care meetings, to visiting

Hospice patients in their home,

as well as in care facilities.

“We’re so grateful to all of our

St. Luke’s Guardian

Angels who make

a difference in the

lives of our patients

and their families,”

said Mary Klinger,

St. Luke’s Foundation

president. “It’s an

honor for the

Foundation to be

able to recognize

them for their

exceptional care.”

Guardian Angel gifts can be

of any size. There is no minimum

or maximum donation

amount to honor your

caregiver. A recogni-

tion ceremony is held

for every Guardian Angel

gift – giving special honor

to those who go above and

beyond. Call Jennifer Sweeney

“ ‘You can’t change the

direction of the wind but you

can adjust your sails to reach

your destination.’ This quote

describes what St. Luke’s did

for my family – they helped

us adjust our sails so that the

final time spent with my

mother was meaningful.”

How to nominate a Guardian Angel

Norma Newmeister had already

been volunteering at St Luke’s

Hospital for 12 years when, in

1984, she was asked if she would

be interested in being a “Rocking

Grandmother” in the Neonatal

Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The

program was based on studies

that show human touch and

contact can speed recovery time

for premature babies. Having

volunteers available to cuddle

babies when their parents were

not able to be with them, gave

the hospital’s tiniest patients

the attention they needed.

It was this experience that

showed Newmeister just how

difficult life can be for parents

with babies in the NICU. Recall-

ing that volunteer experience

with Lumir, her husband of 69

years by her side, she says

“Lumir and I were fortunate to

have had three healthy babies

born at St. Luke’s.

While rocking the sick babies

in the NICU, I became very

aware of the stress the parents

were under.”

Newmeister’s volunteer work

continued over the years, includ-

ing work in Patient Relations,

Patient Visitor, as well as serving

on several committees through

the Hospital Auxiliary. Yet the

NICU remained a special place in

her heart. “The NICU has always

been a special unit; the staff

treated me with great respect and

appreciation,” said Newmeister.

“For some time I have wanted to

make a contribution to the unit.”

In 2014 the opportunity arose

for Norma and Lumir. Plans were

announced for a Ronald

McDonald Family Room® within

the hospital’s Helen G. Nassif

Center for Women’s and Children’s

Health to provide a respite for

families with babies in the NICU

and pediatric units. Norma’s

years volunteering her time

would now lead to many area

families benefitting from her

compassionate nature.

A Ronald McDonald Family

Room provides amenities similar

to those found in a traditional

Ronald McDonald House, but

is located within the hospital.

This means parents and family

members don’t have to leave

the building – and their critically

ill child – when they need to eat,

shower, or simply recharge.

The Ronald McDonald Family

Room is exactly the type of

experience the Newmeisters like

to be a part of. “It’s rewarding to

be able to donate to something

you can see,” said Lumir.

The family also gave a gift to

the Foundation to establish the

Norma Newmeister Scholarship

Fund. The intent of the scholar-

ship is to assist individuals

pursuing a non-clinical degree.

With all of the projects and

initiatives the couple have

supported through the years,

Norma still traces her interest

back to the volunteer opportuni-

ties she’s been given since

joining the hospital auxiliary in

1972. Today, she still works one

day a week in Patient Services

and has logged over 12,000

volunteer hours.

“You really receive more than

you give when you volunteer,”

says Norma. Thanks to Norma

lending her time to the hospital

more than 40 years ago, young

families today are able to be

closer to their critically ill children

when it matters most.

It starts with a single volunteer

In May 2014, UnityPoint Health

– St. Luke’s Hospital became a

member in the Mayo Clinic Care

Network. The hospital is the

first Iowa hospital selected as a

network member, and St. Luke’s

Foundation is excited to have

played a role in making the part-

nership possible. Thanks to the

Foundation’s generous donors,

patients are receiving incredible

benefits at no additional cost:

• eConsults that serve to connect

physicians with Mayo Clinic

specialists when they want

additional input regarding a

patient’s care. Since the partner-

ship began, 240 patients have

received Mayo eConsults with-

out leaving their own doctor.

• AskMayoExpert, an online

point-of-care medical resource

for busy providers who can

access the latest Mayo informa-

tion on disease management,

care guidelines, treatment rec-

ommendations and reference

materials for a wide variety of

medical conditions. Our pro-

viders have used the service

more than 3,000 times since our

network membership began.

Both of these valuable tools

allow hospital staff to continue to

provide the best care for patients

as well as support the hospital’s

mission to improve the quality

of health in the community. And

they wouldn’t be possible

without the generous support

of our donors. Thanks to you,

we’ve been able to start an

incredible partnership that has

already begun to positively affect

the lives of so many.
