Prof. NASSIB G. ZIADÉ is the Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Chamber for DisputeResolution (BCDR-AAA) and the General Editor of the BCDR International ArbitrationReview. Previously, he served as Director of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre(DIAC), as Deputy Secretary-General (and Acting Secretary-General) of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and Editor-in-Chief of the ICSID Review – Foreign Investment Law Journal, and as Executive Secretary of the World BankAdministrative Tribunal. He has also acted as co-arbitrator or chair in numerous ad hoc and institutional arbitrations in commercial, construction and investment matters. Bangladesh BangladeshJustice MD. TOFAZZAL ISLAM is a former Chief Justice of Bangladesh. While a Judge ofthe Supreme Court of Bangladesh, Justice Islam also held the Office of Chairman of theEnrolment Committee of the Bangladesh Bar Council from 2004 to 2008 responsible for selecting the lawyers entitled to practice in the District Courts and then in the SupremeCourt. He then held the Office of the Chairman of the Bangladesh Judicial ServiceCommission from 2008 to 2009 responsible for selecting the Assistant Judges and the Judicial Magistrates for the District Courts. Justice Islam was the principal author ofseveral landmark judgements laying the foundations for the development ofConstitutional Laws and setting significant precedents, which includes the judgments on repeal of the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution of Bangladesh, enlarging the powersof the Supreme Court under the Companies Act 1994 in protecting the interests ofminority shareholders, and reversing the decision of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in allowing the construction of markets in violation of the provisions ofenvironmental laws. Justice Islam did his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master of Artsin History from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and also completed L.L.B there. He then went to the UK for further education and was called to the Bar of England and Walesfrom the Hon’ble Society of Lincoln’s Inn in 1967. Justice Islam was then enrolled as anadvocate of the High Court of the then East Pakistan (presently Bangladesh) in 1969 and in 1980, he became an advocate in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court ofBangladesh. During that period, Justice Islam had been actively associated with theteaching profession and was an Adjunct Faculty in the City Law College, Dhaka teaching Transfer of Property Act and Equity & Trust, and he also taught Corporate Laws at theInstitute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka and an Examiner of Law in theUniversity of Dhaka and as a Member of the Corporate Laws Commission of Bangladesh, he actively participated in the drafting of the Bank Companies Act 1991 and the CompaniesAct 1994. Justice MD. AWLAD ALI is a former Justice of the High Court Division of the SupremeCourt of Bangladesh. He was appointed as a Judge to the High Court Division of theSupreme Court of Bangladesh on 23 February 1997. He retired from the High CourtDivision on 24 January 2008. Presently, he serves as Chairman of Arbitral Tribunal andmember of several Tribunals. Mr. Md. Awlad Ali was enrolled as a pleader under theHigh Court of Judicature of the then East Pakistan (presently Bangladesh) in 1965. Hebecame a member of Dhaka District Bar Association in January 1966. He was enrolled asan Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and became member of the SupremeCourt Bar Association in March 1973. He was enrolled as a Senior Advocate of theAppellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in December 1994 (certificate ofgranted in January 1995). Mr. Md. Awlad Ali started dealing with the arbitration casessince 1969. During his professional career, Mr. Md. Awlad Ali conducted good numberof commercial arbitration cases as a lawyer of the contesting parties including anarbitration case of a London-based shipping company Alam Maritime. He was a soleArbitrator in the arbitration cases of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh. Afterretirement from the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in January2008, Justice Md. Awlad Ali again entered into the arbitration jurisdiction both ininternational and domestic commercial arbitration and disposed of many cases beingthe Chairman of the Arbitral Tribunal. Canada CanadaJustice ANDROMACHE KARAKATSANIS was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canadain October 2011. She had been appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario inMarch 2010 and a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in December 2002. Justice Karakatsanis is a graduate of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School.Following her call to the Bar in 1982, Andromache Karakatsanis served as a law clerk tothe Ontario Court of Appeal. In private practice, she practised criminal, civil and family litigation in Toronto for several years. She then served in the Ontario Public Service for 15years in a number of senior positions. During her career in public service, AndromacheKarakatsanis served as Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Liquor Licence Board of Ontario (1988-95); as Assistant Deputy Attorney General and Secretary for Native Affairs(1995-97); and as Deputy Attorney General (1997-2000). Andromache Karakatsanis served as Ontario's Secretary of the Cabinet and Clerk of the Executive Council from July 2000 to November 2002. As the province's senior public servant, she provided leadership to theOntario Public Service and to the deputy ministers. While in the public service, Justice Karakatsanis was actively involved in issues related to education and reform in the field of administrative justice. She was a recipient of the Society of Ontario Adjudicators andRegulators (SOAR) Medal in 1996 for outstanding service to Ontario's administrativejustice system. Mr. HUGH ADSETT is the Legal Adviser and Director General of the Legal Affairs Bureauof Global Affairs Canada (September 2016 - present). He was previously the Deputy LegalAdviser of the Legal Affairs Bureau (2013-16). Mr. Adsett graduated from Queen's University with an LL.B in 1993. Following his call to the Bar he worked as a human rightsfield officer in Cyangugu, Rwanda, with the United Nations High Commissioner forHuman Rights in 1995. From 2004-2008, he was Counsellor (Legal, Economic andSocial Affairs) at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations in New York, where his responsibilities included representing Canada on the Sixth (Legal) Committee ofthe United Nations, and chairing the Management Committee of the Special Court forSierra Leone. Mr. Adsett served as Director of the Criminal, Security and Diplomatic LawDivision (2008-11) and Director of the United Nations, Human Rights and Economic LawDivision (2011-13). Prof. MAURO POLITI has been a full professor of International law at the University ofTrento since 1990. Prior to this, and since 1976, he had taught at the Universities of Cagliari and Urbino. As Legal Adviser to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations(1992-2001), he participated actively in the negotiation process that lead to the adoption ofthe Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. He was also Chairman of the VI (legal) Committee of the U.N. General Assembly (2000-2001). During his judicial career (1969-1983), he was a judge at the Tribunals of Oristano and Milan. He was also DeputyProsecutor at the Juvenile Court of Milan. In 2001, he was elected by the U.N. General Assembly to be on the list of ad litem judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for theformer Yugoslavia. He was a judge of the International Criminal Court (2003-2009). He has published several articles and books relating to various areas on international law, including consular law, nuclear non-proliferation, environmental law, human rights andinternational criminal law and justice. Dato’ NOOR FARIDA ARIFFIN was the director-general of the research, treaties and international law department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia from July 2008until her retirement in January 2012. Prior to that she was the Malaysian Ambassador tothe Kingdom of the Netherlands from August 2000 to January 2008. During this period, she was concurrently accredited as the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to theOrganisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Justice (Ret.) JOSE C. VITUG was the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of thePhilippines for 10 years from 1993-2004, and designated concurrently during incumbencyas Acting Chief Justice on 17-23 May and 25-27 May 2004. He previously chaired the Court Committee on Legal Education and Bar Matters, and the 2003 and 1997 Bar examinationsin the Philippines. In 2007, he became the Consultant at the Office of the SolicitorGeneral. Justice Dr. SHIRANI A. BANDARANAYAKE, former Chief of Justice of Sri Lanka. Born in April 1958 in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka, Dr. Shirani A. Bandaranayake obtained her Ph.D in Law in March 1986 from the University of London. Prior to that, Dr. Bandaranayake obtained her Master of Philosophy in Law (1983) and her LL.B (Hons.) (1980) from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and subsequently was called to the Bar (1983). Dr. Bandaranayake was awarded the Commonwealth Open Scholarship (1983), the Chevening Scholarship (1989) and Fulbright-Hays Fellowship (1996).
