WELCOME TO OURINTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TERRI LEON!Terri has worked in the education, human

services, and social profit sectors for over 30 years and is currently providing consulting support to non-profit organizations. Prior to venturing out on her own, Terri was a senior program officer at Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust where she served as the primary contact for nonprofits wishing to submit grant proposals. Terri provided one-on-one guidance to organizations through the proposal process and provided grant recommendations to Piper Trust’s Board of Trustees. Terri completed

her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Social Work from Arizona State University. A respected leader in the community, Terri was the recipient of the 2012 Profiles of Success Raul Yzaguirre Community Leadership Award, 2010 Cox Communications Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award, and a Piper Fellowship in 2007.

Although it’s only temporary, Neighbors Who Care is delighted to welcome Terri and the wealth of experience and talent she brings!

NEIGHBORS WHO CAREBOARD OF DIRECTORS

Jennifer Lindley, Board Chair

American author John Maxwell said “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” This quote is especially relevant to what is happening at Neighbors Who Care (NWC).

One of the biggest changes is long-time executive director Eric Ehst retired from NWC in early July. I want to shine a light on Eric and say thank you for his dedicated service and for all he has done to inspire a robust network of volunteers to respond to the ever-changing needs of our aging community, helping them live at home with pride, dignity and independence.  We wish Eric the very best in his next chapter.

Another significant change is the board contracted with Terri Leon to serve as the interim executive director. Terri’s role with NWC is to provide transitional leadership for the staff, volunteers, and board. Terri will also facilitate the permanent executive’s director recruitment process and onboarding. NWC board of directors is actively reviewing candidates and hopes to fill the position in the next couple of months.

COVID-19 surprised all of us this year.

It’s hard to believe we’ve been living with the pandemic for over four months. NWC is closely monitoring Coronavirus developments and have implemented measures set by the CDC and the Maricopa County Department of Public Health to ensure the safety of our volunteers, clients and staff.

Fully aware that NWC is a lifeline for vulnerable seniors in Sun Lakes and south Chandler, essential volunteer services remain available for our neighbors in need during this time of uncertainty. That said, NWC has seen a 50 percent decrease in the number of volunteers available to assist our clients due to COVID-19. Understandably, many are concerned for their own health and safety. If you or someone you know is available and willing to give a senior neighbor a ride, pick up groceries or deliver dinner, we welcome your help.

The year 2020 is one for the books in many ways, especially when it comes to change. NWC is growing as we adapt and respond to our community’s needs. NWC is grateful for the ongoing support of our donors, community partners, staff, and volunteers. We are all in this together.

As a veteran of the US Air Force, an Aerospace Engineer and a politician, NWC Executive Director Eric Ehst had been an agent of change long before he arrived at Neighbors Who Care. He designed and built jet engines for military and civilian purposes at Honeywell, took on campaign finance reform at AZ Clean Elections Institute, helped oversee the democratic election process that made South Sudan a new independent nation, and provided leadership for powerful national organizations such as NOW (the National Organization for Women) and the League of Women Voters at the state level. He also served as an officer or board member for many local organizations including the Valley Citizens’ League, Arizona Advocacy Network Arizona Conservation Alliance

and Arizona Editorial Forum. At the time of his retirement, he was serving on 4 different organization’s boards.

Eric implemented many changes at Neighbors Who Care during his time here and was a cohesive element for our staff. He co-created the Senior Community Wellness Coalition with our partners, About Care and Y-OPAS. The resulting post-hospitalization program has attracted national attention and has been adopted by many senior service organizations. His moving speech about the program can be seen on YouTube, and was a winner at the SVP Fast Pitch competition. Highly regarded and accomplished in the nonprofit community, Eric was not afraid to get his hands dirty. On occasion, one might

Neighbors Who Care is dedicated to keeping people in their homes as they age because home is where they want to be. We have partnerships with many businesses who share our philosophy on ‘Aging in Place’, and we advocate for these businesses by sharing information with the community in a variety of ways, including this newsletter. Home Instead Senior Care has been a stalwart supporter of NWC in many ways throughout the years including advertising and event sponsorships, so we’ve decided to share this spotlight story about local franchise owner, Mahnaz Pourian. Home instead Senior Care is just one of many exceptional home care companies that work with Neighbors Who Care.

Mahnaz Pourian is in the trust business. She knows exactly what it feels like to need compassionate help for a loved one. Her mission is to provide exceptional in-home care for families who want their loved ones to continue living at home or wherever they call home. This was inspired by her own experiences looking for quality care for her own mother. She has since built a talented team of professional caregivers serving thousands of seniors in Southeast Valley since 1997.

Her years of experience as a registered pharmacist illustrate the value she places on compassionate care. It was this emphasis towards patient welfare that set Mahnaz apart from her colleagues and underscored just how important medication management is for compromised patients.

When she retired as a pharmacist, Mahnaz found herself in a unique position. The confluence of her pharmacy background, corporate experience, and dedication to serving others made Home Instead a perfect next step. With a global presence of about 1000 offices, the Home Instead Senior Care Network is expansive. Headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, the company is known for its training and support not only of caregivers, but also office leaders. Home Instead Senior Care is among the first companies to create and implement a set of effective protocols to address the COVID-19 crisis and maintain a regularly updated COVID-19 resource library and safety checklist on their corporate website. “There are always challenges when you run a business”, she said. “From the beginning, we took precautions to protect the health of our clients and our employees. Masks, gloves, and temperature checks are mandated along with ongoing communication in order to keep everyone as safe as possible during these times.”

Indeed, Home Instead clients count on their caregivers,

now more than ever, to keep them safe at home. These skilled care workers help with meal preparation, transportation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, and all activities of daily living as well as companionship and reassurance.

Home Instead caregivers are thoroughly screened and trained, and Mahnaz is involved with every step of the hiring and training process. Families can receive just a few hours of care per week to around the clock care 7 days per week. Every situation is different, and service is tailored to fit the specific needs of our clients. Home Instead is a great choice for anyone facing the challenges of aging. For more information, visit www.homeinstead.com/195 or call the Sun Lakes office directly at 480.895.1460.

tells us that romantic love will make us happy. Advertisers imply that certain products will make us feel content. We’re conditioned to believe that we will finally be loveable once we’ve achieved certain goals or when our projects of self-improvement come to fruition. What if we could let go of these stories? What would it be like to love ourselves for who we are and to extend that love to those around

us? And what if we were to extend unconditional love to all beings?”

These are salient and thought provoking questions to ponder in pursuit of authentic love.

Among the greatest examples of love are Neighbors

Who Care volunteers. They go the extra mile to allow their neighbors to live with dignity, pride and respect. Look inwardly. Do you have compassion for people in need? We invite you to invite your friends and family to join us by volunteering with one of the most treasured nonprofits in the Valley, Neighbors Who Care. Honor the love that already exists in you by extending a hand and registering for our next onine orientation class at neighborswhocare.com/volunteer.

By Elizabeth Vaughan

The word ‘love’ is used quite casually in daily life for most of us. “I love Swedish Fish’ or ‘I love Taylor Swift’ suggests that love is common and easily achieved. I’d like to take a minute to explore true love and it’s precious nature.

In Buddhism, the term ‘metta’ is used to describe a mindset of open hearted inclusion, or ‘lovingkindness’. It invites us to look at true love differently; love is not a feeling, but an ability. In this context, you don’t give or receive love like a transaction. Instead, love is viewed as a capacity one has within themselves. You don’t give love, you are love. Unlike a commodity, it cannot be taken away. The idea is not to think of it as something you give away. Think of love as inherent in you, and know that it is something you can grow and cultivate – especially in service of others.

Author Sharon Salzberg teaches about authentic love, and says, “We are told many stories about love. Our culture

Neighbors Who Care is experiencing a shortage of volunteers due to concerns about Coronavirus. Since the summer months are always the biggest challenge for us due to seasonal travel plans, we need your help. In short, most of our clients are not able to travel, but our volunteers do. COVID-19 concerns have forced many of our volunteers to shelter at home. Client needs for grocery shopping, transportation and meal delivery are greater than they've ever been.

Please ask your friends and family to lend a hand. Register on our website: NeighborsWhoCare.com/volunteer and attend an upcoming Online Orientation class using Zoom meetings. We will send all the information they need to get started as a NWC volunteer for the summer.

If you have volunteered with us in the past and have a few hours to pitch in, we would love to hear from you as well. Please email elizabeth@neighborswhocare to help us meet the needs of your neighbors. Keeping them safely at home is crucial, and we can protect our most vulnerable Sun Lakes & South Chandler residents if we all do our part.

Thank you for being a neighbor who really cares!

Fall is just around the corner, and normally we'd be busy planning the Neighbors Who Care fall fair. For seven years, our fair brought 80 senior service vendors, live music, 40 + classic automobiles, a baking contest and a dunk tank to our parking lot for the community to gather and enjoy themselves while learning about NWC partners and local businesses. It was our way of welcoming summer travelers back to Arizona.

Of course, events are in for some big changes when we start gathering again. Many events will never come back at all. At neighbors Who Care, we're looking for some ideas about having a community event that's safe and fun for everyone. If you have an idea that will keep Sun Lakes and Chandler residents connected, we'd like to hear it! Email [email protected] and share your ideas with NWC. Thanks, and stay safe.

Hundreds of your friends, family members, and neighbors rely on Neighbors Who Care for essential services. We are their lifeline to the community. The need for our services is only going to grow as the population ages. With a gift from your estate you can leave a lasting legacy and ensure that your generosity will continue to touch the lives of others for many years to come.

Giving Options Include:Bequest Gifts: A charitable bequest is simply a distribution from

your estate to a charitable organization through your last will and testament. After providing for the needs of your loved ones in your will or trust, you may choose to benefit organizations like Neighbors Who Care that reflect causes personally important to you.

Life Insurance/Annuity: This is an easy way to make a significant impact. You simply fill out a form that names Neighbors Who Care as a beneficiary to receive assets from a life insurance or annuity policy.

Charitable Trusts: Charitable trusts provide an annual income to the donor or a designated beneficiary for life (or another period of time as you specify). Upon the death of the trust’s beneficiary, the trust principal transfers to Neighbors Who Care.

You share our vision of a community where people can continue to live in the comfort and security of their own homes with pride, dignity and independence. By planning your gift today, you’ll create an impact for generations to come.
