Working with Persons in the Criminal Justice SystemDale Willetts, CCJP

This six-hour course reviews the NIDA Principles of Drug Abuse Treatment for Criminal Justice Populations, the National Institute of Corrections Principles of Effective Interventions, and the principles of criminogenic risk, need, and responsivity. Training will discuss practical application of aforementioned principles in treatment services for adults involved in the criminal justice system.

Dale Willetts is the Director of the North Carolina TASC Training Institute at Coastal Horizons. Dale has worked over 25 years in Community Corrections and SUD treatment systems of North Carolina. At Coastal Horizons he also administered TASC programs, Drug Treatment Court, the Day Reporting Center. He is credentialed in North Carolina as a Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional.

Mindful recovery practices can play an important role in helping people withmental health and substance use disorders achieve emotional sobriety. Clinical supervisors and team leaders can improve clinical outcomes, reducingcounselor and employee burnout and compassion fatigue utilizing mindfulnesspractices. Attendees will participate in both didactic, individual and groupexperiential exercises to understand the concepts, practices of mindful recovery.

Mindful RecoverySteve Hanna, LPC, LCAS, Arise-II

Steve is a licensed professional counselor and a licensed clinical addiction specialist with certification in the Love First, ARISE, and Guided Intervention models. As a seasoned interventionist, clinician, presenter, and program developer, his career has focused on helping individuals and families who are affected by substance use and mental health issues. After working with adolescents in the school system, Steve went on to counsel individuals and families at the Commencement Center in Georgia. Steve then worked as a primary counselor at Amethyst in Charlotte before going on to become the founder and clinical director of the Eastover Awakenings Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program for adults with co-occurring disorders. Most recently, he opened his own intervention and counseling practice in 2016.

The Challenges of Co-occurring Disorders Cathy Killian, LPC, LCAS, CCS, CCH

Cathy Killian has been a counselor in the Charlotte area for over 30 years. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, Certified Clinical Supervisor and Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. She has additional training in the Johnson Model of Intervention, Critical Incidence Stress Debriefing, Trauma Response and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. She has worked in a variety of both substance abuse and mental health settings, including inpatient, outpatient, hospital based and free-standing treatment facilities. She is currently the Clinical Director for the North Carolina Lawyer Assistance Program and maintains a small private practice.

Treating clients with co-occurring disorders can be especially challenging because there is an increased likelihood of relapse, suicide risk, rehospitalization and other roadblocks to a full recovery for their clients. This training will seek to clarify this unique symptom profile resulting from the interaction of these disorders, discuss treatment challenges and effective treatment approaches, and explore the collaboration, understanding, and respect needed to address the complexity of these challenging clients.

The Ethics of Cultural CompetenceJoanna Linn, PhD., LPCS, LCAS, CCS

Dr. Linn received her undergraduate degree in Education, her master’s degree in Counseling from Wake Forest University and her doctorate in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She developed the company, Thrivilege (The Privilege to Thrive), PLLC, in 2013. She has worked as a therapist in private practice, in opioid addiction treatment, at a Level 1 Trauma Center, and in Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Addiction programs. The common threads of empathy, wellness, cultural diversity, resiliency, and ethics have guided her professional path and research interests. Dr. Linn currently provides training throughout the state and teaches college. She also serves as a Mental Health clinician representative on the North Carolina Commission for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services.

Participants will be able to:-Describe "culture" by exploring the range of topics and areas that can and should beaddressed, particularly in behavioral health settings.-Identify one's own cultural perspective, and describe how this perspective influencesbehavior-Evaluate possible ethical dilemmas involving cultural issues in the workplace and addresshow these can be resolved from a practical standpoint using professional codes of ethics

This workshop will give a clinical definition to spirituality and its clinical presentation. Utilizing the Spiritual Platform as a foundation, participants will learn how to assess individual's competencies and deficits in the face of spirituality and work toward repair n this dimension of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual frame of reference defining the disease of addiction.

Jeff Georgi, M.Div, MAH, LPC, LCAS, CCS, CGP is a Consulting Associate in the Department of Psychiatry and the Division on Addiction Research and Translation at Duke University Medical Center and has a private practice, Jeff Georgi & Associates, LLC.

Neuroscience of Addiction: Debunking the “Choice” MythJessica Holton, MSW, LCSW, LCAS

Despite significant scientific advances towards improving the treatment of addiction, , deep rooted stigmas and misconceptions remain. This presentation will describe predisposing factors and undercurrents of addiction, the basic neurobiology of addiction, and adaptive coping skills based on the neuroscience.

Jessica Holton, MSW, LCSW, LCAS has nearly two decades of experience and is a private practitioner specializing in treating Trauma & Stress Related Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, and Addictions. She has held several leadership roles with National Association of Social Workers, Addiction Professionals of North Carolina, Eastern Carolina Critical Incident Stress Management Association, and the North Carolina Substance Abuse Practice Board. Jessica has composed many professional newsletter articles, compiled a six-hour continuing education curriculum and is a national public speaker.

Group therapy is an effective addiction counseling approach because of the specific needs of the addicted client that include: having their interactions with others observed, receiving support and feedback, and developing hope for their recovery from their addiction. This workshop provides an overview of leadership skills and specific techniques regarding the needs of addicted clients that will be beneficial in the facilitation of group addiction counseling.

Geri Miller, Ph.D., LP, LPC, LCAS, CCS, is a Professor in the HPC Department at Appalachian State University. She holds the NCC AP Master Addiction Counselor credential. Dr. Miller has over 30 years of experience in the counseling profession and in the addictions field.

HIV and Ethical Practices with LGBTQ PersonsDavid Zealy-Wright, LCAS, CCS, LCMHC

David graduated from Catawba Valley Community College in 2005 earning an Associate in Arts, Lenoir-Rhyne University in 2008 earning a BA in Psychology, and in 2010 an MA in Agency Counseling. He enjoys working with diverse populations and has experience with children, teens, adults, seniors, and couples. His specialty areas include addiction, HIV, depression, anxiety, life changes, men’s issues, relationships, and LGBTQIA issues. David is currently an Associate Professor of Psychology at Catawba Valley Community College. David has extensive public speaking experience presenting sensitive material in a way that blends both humor and compassion.

Marijuana Medicalization & Legalization Facts and FictionJohn P. Femino, MD

Dr. Femino has been active in ASAM for over 30 years, serving on the national board of directors as New England Regional Director and as President of the Rhode Island Society of Addiction Medicine. He has participated as writer/reviewer for ASAM buprenorphine publications, drug testing and public policy on marijuana and is on the ASAM Quality Improvement Council, Payor Relations Committee and Legislative Advocacy Committee. As a consultant to the RI DOH and the RI Attorney General, he participated in drafting regulations on controlled substances prescribing and was appointed to the RI Marijuana Legislation Study Commission. He co-authored a book on neurobiology of 12 step programs and is a frequent lecturer at the North Carolina School of Alcohol and Drug Studies. Dr. Femino has been a consultant and member of the scientific advisory board of Dominion Diagnosis, and conducted research on outcome for buprenorphine by program type and with development of genetic testing for addiction.

John P. Femino, MD, is Founder of the Meadows Edge Recovery Center, a multidisciplinary medical and mental health group practice, and substance abuse treatment program in North Kingstown, RI. He received his MD from Brown University, and is board certified in addiction medicine and internal medicine. Dr. Femino has received a number of grants for alcohol and substance abuse-related projects, and was the recipient of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Career Teacher in Alcohol and Drug Abuse grant at Brown University, where he taught for nearly 20 years.

So Treatment Is Over, What Do I Do Now?Delton Russell, CPSS

This is a comprehensive training designed to go in depth into how to make recovery sustainable after treatment by identifying barriers to recovery such as shame, arrested development, trauma, genetics and social norms and using solution focused processes to overcome them such as neuroplasticity, use of recovery language, implementation of recovery practices and social inclusion.

Delton Russell is the Executive Director at Wills Place, a Recovery Community Organization in Albemarle NC. Delton is also the chair of the Cabarrus Recovery Alliance and serves on Cardinal Innovations Healthcare’s Community Board for Stanly County. Delton is a North Carolina certified Peer Support trainer in addition to being a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist. He is a certified Wellness Recovery Action Plan facilitator and a Question Persuade Refer facilitator.

Neuroscientific Basis of Addiction, Recovery and Relapse Darryl S. Inaba, PharmD., CATC-V, CADC III

This training will review research of the brain anomalies associated with substance-related and addictive disorders which provide an understanding of the differences between the wide variety of drugs and behavioral compulsions that can develop in some individuals predisposed to Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders.

Dr. Darryl Inaba is Director of Clinical and Behavioral Health Services for the Addictions Recovery Center and Director of Research and Education of CNS Productions in Medford, Oregon. He is an associate Clinical Professor at the University of California in San Francisco, and a Lifetime Fellow at Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc., in San Francisco.

Dr. Stone is a full time consultant in Addiction Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pulmonary at the Eleanor Slater Hospital / RI BHDDH. Dr. Stone is the current President of the Rhode Island Society of Addiction Medicine.

“Combining 12 Step Facilitation and Medications to Treat People with Addiction Involving Opioids”Andrew C. Stone, MD, MPH

This program will review the history, rationale, and evidence supporting the combined use of medications to treat addiction involving Opioids and Twelve step Facilitation. Outcomes will be reviewed supporting this practice in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Registration begins at 9:00am on the 1st Wednesday of each month for the corresponding

month’s training.

There is NO CHARGE to attend McLeod Center trainings.

From I-77, heading North: (Heading towards Uptown Charlotte); Exit 7 (Clanton Rd),

make a right onto Clanton Road. McLeod Center will be on the right.

From I-77, heading South: (Coming from Uptown Charlotte); Exit 7 (Clanton Rd), make a

Credit Hours

Qualifying trainings provided by McLeod Center are certified through the North Carolina

Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board (NCASPPB). Training is for six continuing education credit hours.

Training begins at 8:30 am and concludes at 4:00 pm. McLeod Center has a responsibility to the

NCASPPB to grant credit hours only to those who have attended the entire training. In order to receive a certificate, participants must check in at the beginning of training, attend the entire

session, and check out (either paper submission or electronic device) at the completion of the

training.

Attendance for the complete training is required in order to receive credit.

McLeod Center will not provide duplicate certificate replacement for any reason.

Guidelines for ParticipationMcLeod Center supports the field of addiction treatment services with this training series to advance learning and create a thought-provoking opportunities for dialogue.

In order to provide the best experience for everyone, we ask you to join us at each training in business casual attire, silence your devices during the presentations, take calls outside the

training space, and refrain from reading outside material or work.

Electronic devices and other outside literature will not be permitted in the training center. Cell phones must be silenced.
