Pentecost
Pentecost isn’t a feast that began when the tongues of fire appeared and the sound of strong driving wind
filled the room where Jesus’ disciples were gathered. Rather, Pentecost was first a feast of the Jewish people. It celebrated fifty days after the Passover, and was called the Feast of Unleavened Bread, or the Feast of Weeks. At first it was an agricultural feast, a celebration of the wheat harvest. Pentecost’s significance in the Jewish community expanded to include the remembrance of God’s giving the law on Sinai. Thus, it was a celebration of the new covenanted community formed by God during the trials in the desert. This all-too-quick review of the origins of Pentecost is not meant to be a history lesson. But as we reflect on its origins, we can see how "loaded" with meaning and imagery this feast is for Christians. The original feast was connected to Passover and so for us, Pentecost is linked to Jesus’ suffering, death and exaltation at God’s right hand. It is also a harvest feast because the disciples, gathered to receive the Spirit, were the "harvest" of Jesus’ labors and we too are the fruits of his work.
Opportunities to Help & Volunteer
“When I was hungry, you gave me to eat.” ( Mt. 25)
Our pantry is in need of non-perishable items such as: cereals, peanut butter, jelly, canned
vegetables, fruits, and soups, tuna fish, crackers, non-refrigerated milk (ex. Parmalat), etc.
Our Parish pledged to #WalkwithFrancis—donating
to the Food Pantry is a good way to walk.
Are You Aware?
It has been our experience at times that
some people may feel they are not able
to receive Communion due to divorce
or other personal issues. Often times,
there may be a misunderstanding regarding Church
Teaching in these matters. You are encouraged to see Fr.
Gill, S. Mary Ann, Deacons Jim, John or Tony for clarity
so that you do not miss the opportunity to celebrate the
healing presence of Jesus in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and in turn come to the Table of the Lord.
Associated Vincentian Charities of Brooklyn Gives Back!
Immaculate Heart of Mary should share in the profits. For each car, truck or van, running or not the Society of t Vincent de Paul will give back to our church $50/$100 per vehicle. Maybe you don’t have a vehicle, but a family member, friend or neighbor has an old or neglected vehicle in their driveway that they would like to dispose of. Call the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul at: 718.491.2525. Thank You!

FAITH BOOK PENTECOST SUNDAY
JUNE 9, 2019 Acts 2: 1-11 Ps. 104 Romans 8: 8-17 Jn 14: 15-16, 23b-26 or Jn 20: 19-23
From today’s Acts of the Apostles reading:
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house where they were. Reflection:
Pentecost reminds us we never can be sure how, or in whom, the Spirit will work. The feast cautions us to keep ears and eyes open lest we miss what new life the Spirit is breathing into us. So, we ask ourselves:
What blocks do I put up to resist the change the Spirit might want to bring about in my life?
● Have I ever been surprised by the Spirit?
Please remember our men and women serving throughout the world in the US Military in your prayer.
“The Church does not exist to condemn people but to bring about an encounter
with the visceral love of God’s mercy.”
Pope Francis

Dear Parishioner,
How ironic that today, Pentecost, we hear how all were able to understand each in their own tongue. We have been without phones since May 28th due to a problem on the
‘outside pole.’ As of the writing of this bulletin we are waiting for the arrival of a repair team on June 6th. That is no guarantee of a fix. So, if you are planning to attend our Parish Feast Day Mass on June 29th or the Mass and reception for Deacon Peter on June 30th please contact Sylvia via email at:
Thank you for your patience regarding the phones. We have communicated via Flocknote our inability to receive calls. This is an important reason to join the flock! It is a way to stay in the loop about parish events and happenings. Sign-up today. See directions on page 3.
Thank you to all who joined Deacon Anwar last Sunday at the 4:30 p.m. Mass. How blessed are we to have four deacons.
On Friday, Fr. Gill returned from a week’s retreat. What a beautiful time to spend in prayer in anticipation of Pentecost.

In the Breaking of the Bread The following is taken from a homily Paulist Fr. Rich Andre preached for the 3rd Sunday of Easter in Austin, TX...
“My favorite song written since Vatican II is written by composer Michael Ward. The first verse is told from the perspective of Cleopas and his companion on the road to Emmaus:
In the walking on the road, we saw him. In the telling of our hopes, we saw him.
In the burning of our hearts, we saw the Lord. At the meal he took the bread and then he blessed it,
broke it, offered it. In the breaking of the bread, we saw him!
Suddenly our eyes were opened, and we knew he was alive.
Think of the symbolism of all the various meals Jesus shares. These meals are about courage, compassion, and connection. Even though it’s now nightfall, Cleopas and his companion courageously go back at least 7 miles to Jerusalem, to compassionately connect with the other disciples immediately.
Are you not feeling your heart burning within you like they did? Maybe you doubt why we gather every weekend for this breaking of bread? Trust that the Eucharist is the source of courage, compassion, and connection! Ask the Holy Spirit to provide you with those gifts. The song ends with the story of Pentecost and what we have been called to do every day since:
We took bread as he had done and then we blessed it, broke it, offered it.
In the breaking of the bread, we saw him! There within our midst was Jesus, and we knew he was
alive. In the breaking of the bread, he is here with us again,
and we know he is alive! Alleluia, alleluia!
Come Holy Spirit, come as a fire and cleanse our hearts! Fill us with courage, compassion, and a desire for connection!”

Baptism of Infants (Children age 7 years and younger)
Baptism Preparation Classes for families planning to have their child baptized at Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place the first Saturday of every month at 11:00 a.m. in the Marian Center. Parents must
attend; sponsors are also encouraged to join us for the class. Families must be registered for the class prior to attending by contacting the Rectory. We will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism on June 16th. You must be pre-registered and attend the Baptism Preparation Class held first Saturday of the month.
Baptism of Children (Children who have celebrated their
8th Birthday and older.)
Children who have celebrated their 8th birthday must participate in a process - The Rite of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) adapted for Children. This process takes place over three to five years and includes your child attending Faith Formation Classes and Mass regularly. This is a faith journey for both you and your child. When there is an appropriate readiness, your child is baptized, confirmed and receives Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Your child continues regular instruction in the Faith Formation Program for several years after their initiation. For more information contact S. Mary Ann.
Only Parents or Legal Guardians may register a child for Baptism. No date is definite until you have completed all
registration forms at the Rectory.
Sacrament Preparation News!

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention for June
The Mode of Life of Priests
That priests, through the modesty and humility of their
lives, commit themselves actively to a solidarity
with those who are most poor.
The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children,
then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ
Romans 8:16-17
Pentecost must have been a truly amazing time for the early followers of Jesus. All kinds of barriers are broken as seen in the free flow of communication--all God’s children speaking to each other! Lucas Ramirez, in his book, "Designed for More" (Hachette, 2018), writes, "What God had once split in the ancient story (Tower of Babel), was now bringing back together, not with a traditional language, but with the central language of love. This new universal language supersedes all previous kingdoms and brings unity again to humanity, but a unity with the right priorities and centrally focused on God" (210). In the gift of the Spirit of love, God restores human beings to unity with one another and with God--what God had intended at the very beginning of creation. Pope Francis states, "Indeed, we are a single human family that is journeying on toward unity, making the most of solidarity and dialogue among peoples in the multiplicity of differences" (5/24/13).
Ramirez further writes that when the author of the Book of Acts reports that the early believers gathered "in one accord," this Greek phrase, homothymadon, means "to rush along in unison" (211). Wouldn’t it be wonderful to re-capture Christian unity with such intensity again?
I look at the many ministries I have been involved in over the years and realize that I have experienced the Christian unity that love makes happen. There is something to be said for working together on a common goal for the common good when the motivating factor is love of the ‘other,’ who are unknown brothers and sisters.
The language of love can overcome anything when there is mutual effort on both sides. It sometimes requires a leap of faith to step in to a seemingly impossible situation, such as the splintering of Christians in so many different directions. What is a follower of Jesus to do today?
One solution would be to join an interfaith group. This could be a book club or a group working on a pressing social issue or a group of different faiths that just want to get to know each other better. The main way to bring about unity of purpose is to build relationships with those you might otherwise fear.
Let the fire of Pentecost ignite your fire for unity.
