The Motorsport Club of Ottawa needs your Help!

We need members to come forward and be a part of your club. Positions available immediately include:• Secretary• Treasurer• Rally DirectorIf you have problem, why not be part of the solution.Don’t sit back and expect someone else to do it for you. Act now!

Here it is ... A new LINK, finally! I know many in the club (yes, including myself) have been anticipating every new edition of the LINK. It seemed to take forever to do the publishing with all the happenings this summer. You can see just what has been happening this summer in the local motorsport world as you read through these pages. This edition is packed with all sorts of official club communication and notices. It’s hard to keep up with it all. I know I attended very few of the events written about in these pages. Take a close look as I did make sure to slide in some entertaining articles and exciting motoring stories!

One important thing I learned as I prepared this edition is about how I work on projects such as this. I would love to have a week straight with absolutely no interruptions as I do the publishing job. Once I am started, momentum carries me through to the finish. Of course, reality dictates otherwise. So I need to keep the project out in front of me where I can see it to make it easier to pick up where I left off. Any tricks to keep it on top of all the other projects?

In the last edition, I was saying that keeping involved in the club activities is a goal for any member. My personal report card includes driving one rally, navigating in three rallies, and some excuses. It has definitely been fun to do all that. I know I need shocks and tires just like anyone else in the club ... but to the point of rather ride my bicycle instead of drive such a bouncy vehicle!?! So this next stage is diversification ... try something new in autosport! I am going to give a go at changing those shocks myself and volunteering at an event ... What about you?

The President's Report ... June 29by Ronald WoltmanThe hot summer is here and MCO

has its hands everywhere.....though one area of some inactivity is “communication”. The next edition of MCO’s award-winning Link is underway, but I felt I needed to get “on-line” to bring members ‘up-to-date’!

First, NO July meeting.....though anyone who wishes to slide into Louis and have dinner and a cool one on the first Tuesday in July is more than welcome.

The MCO racing and Advanced Driving School is set for this Canada Day weekend at our favourite track -- Shannonville Motorsports Park. Thanks to hard work by all of the team, registrations have picked up to the point where we had to cut entries off. Way cool -- given the exec was close to pulling the plug in June.

Come on out and HELP....lots of room for everyone, and anyone who helps will get an opportunity to get on the track.

I again was the “Grand Marshal” for the Ottawa Exotic & Race Car Parade(Ferrari Festival). What a neat deal, especially watching the ex-Gilles

Villeneuve Ferrar 312T5 ‘scream’ up Carling Avenue on the rev limiter. The current owner -- Bud Moeller -- from Virginia was as gracious an owner I had ever met, and who could not do enough for us wanting to share the car as much as possible with Canadian fans. We are working on next year, and we may have a ‘gaggle’ of Historic F1 cars on the streets of Ottawa....and a possible big surprize. If you want to be involved in ‘06, let me know early! Let me extend my sincere thanks to all of my team for their professionalism, dedication and enthusiasm. Cleveland anyone....?!!

Chuck Payne and his Solo II team are again putting on some of the best attended Solo II events in Onntario Region....try to get out to the Corel Centre to help; or compete. Believe me, it is easy to get hooked. In fact, in 1969 I started competing in my “big” Healey and have been an MCO member ever since.

MCO members are involved, competing and officiating at all levels in Ontario, Quebec Region , Newfoundland and the United States; for the Targa Newfoundland as competitors and

officials (Evan Gamblin & Glen Clarke); and watch for the Cape Breton TT (VP Terry Dale is steering that baby); also Chief Steward for the FBMW Series; Bob Armstrong (MCO’s Chief Driving instructor) is Safety Director for the Canadian GP (and Moslon Indy -- can anyone say NASCAR!); I am Deputy Steward for the ASN Canada FIA-sanctioned Honda Michelin Challenge Series, and Nick Berry is part of the tech crew; Craig Hamm, Robert Roaldi and other rally dudes are “movers-and-shakers’ in the rally world; MCO does Racing and Advanced Driving Schools.....phew.....GET INVOLVED in the most active club in Canada.

MCO has its race date for 2006 on the Ontario Region calendar (last weekend in July) with a vintage theme at Calabogie Motorsports Park. CMP shopuld be paved sometime this year, and we will try to organize a social/teack event before this year is run.

And did I mention Cleveland Airport....see me for details. Have a fun, safe and involved summer.....

Ted Powell Race Weekend & Solo I Championship Event AnnouncementThe Motorsport Club of Ottawa (MCO) has cancelled the Ted Powell Race Weekend & Solo I Championship Event scheduled at Calabogie Motorsports Park for 2005.

Ottawa – It is with considerable regret that the Motorsport Club of Ottawa announces the cancellation of its scheduled 2005 events at the new Calabogie Motorsports Park due to continued uncertainty surrounding the opening of the track.

The cancellation of the Ted Powell Invitational Race Weekend (Sept. 9-11), and the Solo I Championship Event (Aug. 19-21) in no way diminishes MCO’s complete support for the track, nor our confidence in the opening of the

facility in time for the 2006 season.

The MCO decided to take this action now in fairness to all of our members, partners, volunteers, clubs in both Ontario and Quebec regions, rather than awaiting the track’s now-postponed paving date. For further information concerning Calabogie Motorsports Park visit www.calabogiemotorsportspark.com. The MCO has already scheduled The Ted Powell Annual Race Weekend as part of the Ontario Regional Championship for July 28-30, 2006. Moreover The MCO is hoping to host a two-day, fun lapping weekend at CMP later this fall with dates to be confirmed upon final completion of the track.

Information: www.mco.org.

On behalf of the Club, the Executive would like to thank all of The MCO’s members, the many volunteers, our partners in Ontario Region, our friends in Quebec Region, all of the Calabogie Motorsports principals and a host of supporters for all of their time, patience and support.

The Motorsport Club of Ottawa will be racing at CMP in 2006.

Update to 2004 Final Open Wheel Report

by Sam Mandia Regrettably I missed the final standings and achievements of Stefany Malanka for the 2004 Formula Ford season. Stefany completed the Ontario Region F1600 A class in 11th place out of 26 cars. She also competed in the Quebec region and placed 18 out of 33 cars at the Montreal Indy race. Nigel Mortimer stated: “that her learning curve was good as she battled with many seasoned veterans”. Stefany also drove a sedan and formula car on the same weekend, which necessitated a different driving style for each vehicle. Well done Stefany. We are all looking forward to seeing you compete in the up-coming season.

May Rally Report by Craig Hamm Since my last report Jaak Laan, Robert Roaldi and myself attended the RallySport Ontario Growth Meeting. A brainstorming session was held to discuss ways to promote rallying in Ontario. This was held in Peterborough and was highly constructive, with Peter Watt (PMSC) conducting a very professional facilitation. The results of this meeting are available on the RallySport Ontario website.

The Rally School at Algonquin College has been postponed due to insufficient enrolment. I wish to thank Robert Roaldi, Mike Koch, and Steve Carrick for their efforts in this endeavour. We hope to offer the course again in early 2006, hoping that the different seasonal time slot may attract more students.

The Children’s Treatment Centre Rally, a non-timed gimmick rally, for the benefit of the rally’s namesake, but with all the navigational tricks of the trade, was organised and held by David Butler on Saturday May 14 in Cornwall. Unfortunately, only 3 teams had the pleasure of enjoying a very well organised rally. We have something to build on for next year, though.

Thanks to Ian O’Halloran, Patrick Leclerc (both new organisers), and Robert Roaldi, the MCO Summer Nights Rally Series kicks off in June. This is a series of navigational rallies that are approximately 100km in length in which anybody and any car, light truck or minivan may enter. The route and instructions are intended to be very BEGINNER friendly with a separate expert class for seasoned rallyists. This is a Time Speed Distance (TSD) event and it is not a race. The MCO Summer Nights Rally series will be run on the last Wednesday evening of each month beginning in June. The dates are: June 29th, July 27th (paved roads only), and August 31st. Registration will open at 6pm and car zero will be leaving at 8pm. The rally will be over by 10pm but competitors are welcome to stay around and chat after the event. Each event will start and finish just west of Ottawa. The exact location is

still to be confirmed, but likely to be the Cheshire Cat Pub on the Carp Rd. Volunteers are always welcome! The fee for each team is $25 per event. For those wishing to enter all three events the fee will be $60 per team. Check the website http://www.backseatmonkey.com/mco/series.html for up to date details.

Members Ian O’Halloran and Patrick Leclerc are running very competitively this year in the Ontario Road Rally Championship Novice Class. The battle lines are drawn with another serious team, who are also vying for the top class honours.

Upcoming performance rallies are the Black Bear Rally, Dorset, Ontario, and the above-mentioned MCO summer series. Check the Maple Leaf Rally Club website for details. This will be a pace noted event, and is also a full-length regional (multi-road). Volunteers are needed, and this should be a very exciting event! Much farther down the road, har har, the Fall Night Rally (Robert Roaldi) returns Sept 24, and we are looking at running the late night drivex Golden Pine Rally in early December, start likely in Eganville and ending in Renfrew. Thanks to Ferdinand Trautmansdorff for taking up a new challenge. Planning is already underway!!

We have at least one more monthly rally group meeting, for May, which is likely missed the Link publication date. Robert Roaldi will be giving his annual navigational school that night, free of charge. I will be talking to the local Triumph club two nights prior to that, and we hope to gain some new rally converts. Check the Rally Forum on the MCO online discussion board for up to the date information on who is doing what, and where. For MCO rally, there is really no better source for information, or to post a question, suggestion, or otherwise.

Rally On!

RSO Growth Meeting

by Ross Wood The RallySport Ontario Board is very pleased with the response to the call for interest in attending a meeting to discuss the growth of rally in Ontario - over 20 of you indicated that you would like to participate. At the last RSO meeting it was decided to broaden the scope of the meeting to all aspects of rally in Ontario.

In reacting to your requests, it is looking as if we will likely settle on a Sunday in April - possible dates are April 17 or 24. Peterborough is looking to be a likely location.

We are still welcoming further participants. If interested, please contact Ross Wood [email protected]

by Sam Mandia

The beginning of Formula Vee racing can be traced to a hardware business in Miami, owned by Hubert L. Brundage. As a race car driver, Brundage competed in the very first race held at Sebring.

In the mid – 1950’s Formula Junior came on the scene in order to give enthusiasts like Brundage a “poor man’s Grand Prix car”. Unfortunately, costly modifications to gain more horsepower out of small engines had not been controlled by the rules, resulting in expensive and sophisticated cars, evolving from the original concept.

Brundage, who by now had outgrown the hardware business, was now a Volkswagen dealer. He contacted Italian race car designer Enrico Nardi in 1959, and asked him to build a race

car with VW components which would be cost efficient and serviceable by the average mechanic.Enter retired Air Force Colonel George M. Smith and his business partner Bill Duckworth. Smith had been involved with “star” sailboat racing and recognized the value of a racing class in which all cars are equal, thus making driver skill the determining factor. Smith also coined the term “Formula Vee”. Several other people got into the act at this time; Ray Caldwell, and Gene Beach. The year was 1961.

Very few people took them seriously when they started showing up at race tracks, but in 1963 Formula Vee became a recognized class and the rest they say is history. A history that now spans 42 years. It is the world’s

Formula 1200, the Canadian version of Formula Vee still keeps the basic concept of extremely close racing at an affordable price. by Sam Mandia You know how I always complain about the weather; well this will be no different. The only good thing about the rain is that it rains on everybody.

Friday was glorious day and evening. Saturday dawned very different, cloudy, rainy, cold basically miserable. Ten F1200 showed up, with many drivers planning to attend later when and if the weather gets better. I qualified 8th out of 10. The first race Saturday was damp with drying track, I made a good start and got up to 2 nd place at one point, fell back to 4th with my tires steadily getting poised to let go all grip. The group behind did indeed catch me and I ended up finishing 5th.

The Sunday morning race was dry for change and after 20 min. I finished 5th once again. The afternoon race took place in the RAIN. I got “punted” at the start and was last. I now gave new meaning to term spinning. I spun 7 times at various corners, and never touched a thing, trying to catch up. Mostly at corner 5. Eventually passing the same cars numerous times and finished 7th. I now have “new” tires courtesy of Howard at Talon Tire.

by Sam Mandia This marked the opening event of the Ontario Regional Championship for the Formula Ford contingent. This report is courtesy of Nigel Mortimer.Friday the 13th was bad news with 2 of our 5 cars crashing heavily, Michel Julian hitting the wall in turn 10, and Paul Kostoff spinning in turn 2 after Rob Peters oiled down the track to prevent tire wear. Saturday and Sunday races went much better with Lew MacKenzie and Nigel Mortimer trading places with a 4th and 5th each in A class. Nigel qualified 3rd and Lew 7th with 3/10 of a second between them on Saturday. Close, close racing.Rob Peters had two 7th place finishes in A class. To quote Nigel: “ I’m sure as he gets older he will get faster”.Jean-Guy Fournier had some great racing with DNF and a 5th in B class.Unfortunately Stefany Malanka had engine problems and was unable to compete in the races.

Let me begin this report by saying that it was very hot this weekend. At this point I have exhausted my vocabulary in describing the heat, so... A “cliché” is defined as a trite or common place expression or idea.

This years event was held under cliché and cliché conditions. Temperatures in the mid to cliché range. Consumption of liquid was required to maintain

MCO Sedan Drivers in Action @ DAC Trillium Trophy! MCO Sedan Drivers race and win at the 40th Annual DAC Trillium Trophy Races at Shannonville Motorsports Park, July 16-17!

This past weekend at Shannonville, a number of MCO drivers withstood the heat, humidity and serious competition to come through victorious!

In the Ontario Touring GT Challenge, Sherissa Microys and Mike White teamed up in the #120 Volkswagen Jetta and Cindy Armstrong in the #34 Nissan NX2000 contested the field. The #120 Volkswagen Jetta was driven by Sherissa to a 9th place finish in Touring on Sunday and Mike drove to a 5th place in the Sunday race. Cindy brought home the Armstrong Motorsports entry in 12th and 10th place in class for the two TGT races. Matt Cornford attended the weekend, but was unable to compete due to

technical problems with his VTEC power plant in his Acura Integra.

The Ontario Challenge Cup continues to offer good action with MCO members participating! Jim Harrison brought out his Porsche 911 Turbo in GT1, placed 2nd in the first race of the weekend, 4th in the second race but retired mid day Sunday and was unable to complete his bid for a trophy win. Two classes (GTB and GTC) continue to be dominated by MCO members. Bob Armstrong suffered a transmission failure on Saturday and recovered a 8th place finish in GTB using Cindy’s #44 car as a backup in the first race. Bob went on to finish first in both of Sunday’s races after a heroic effort by his crew on Saturday to replace his transmission in the #33 Nissan NX2000. Ron Schell and Jon Winges brought out their Chevy Camaros to contest the GTB field, fighting in the pack with other GTC cars, finishing the weekend’s final trophy race in 7th and 9th place in class respectively. Rob Microys finished all three races this weekend, dominating the GTC field driving his #120 Volkswagen Jetta, finishing 2nd and 1st in the qualifying races and 1st in class in the trophy race. Tom Lang in his #72 Porsche 924 also battled in the GTC field; he finished 4th, 3rd and 4th in the weekends three OCC races. Both Bob and Rob have good leads in their classes heading half way through the championship. Good luck to both of them as the season continues!

Even more DAC

by Sam MandiaDeutscher Automobil Club (Canada) – DAC 40th Trillium Trophy Races – July 16-17 Shannonville Motorsport Park

This years event was held under extremely hot and humid conditions. Temperatures in the mid- to high thirty range. Did someone say F1200 – air cooled?

The first race on Saturday was tightly contested as usual, with Frank Steinhausen taking first place, Chris Hart second, and third being “hotly” contested by Dave Aird, Sam Mandia, Nick Shaw, Eugene Cartini, Ken Rigg and Guy Bellingham who eventually claimed the position away from the others.

The second race was won by Chris Hart, followed by Frank Steinhausen, who had spun early in the race and carved his way back through the field in a stirring effort. Third was Nick Shaw narrowly missing second by ½ a second. The track surface was constantly changing from extra sticky to no grip at all on almost every lap and corner, a consequence of the unrelenting sun and the strength sapping humidity.

The third and final race of the DAC Trillium Weekend was once again won by Chris Hart, who with second place driver Frank Steinhausen diced back and forth for 16 laps. Third, for another podium finish was Nick Shaw in his yellow number 11. Further back in the pack, virtually every lap created a different configuration on the lap charts, with fractions, once again separating the final outcome. Getting back to the heat, all the BRD’s Exfords and lone Jacer ran without problems related to over-heating.

cliché your cliché.

In the Libre races Michael Jullian had a fourth and 2 third place finishes. Formula First saw Dominic LeBreton get a second place and unfortunately after a great deal of effort to prepare the car for competition resulted in 2 DNF’s. The ISSECO F1200 races were cliché contested. Sam Mandia had a 5th, 6th and 7th in the cliché events. The track surface was constantly changing from extra grip cliché, to no grip at all cliché. A consequence of the unrelenting cliché, and strength cliché humidity.

Formula Ford had yet another decent turnout with 14 cars, Nigel Mortimer had two 5th’s, Lew MacKenzie had a 4th and 10 place finish, Stefany Malanka an 8th and 9th place finish, Robert Peters an 11th in one race only, and Adam Mortimer was 10th and had a DNF in the final race on Sunday.

by Rob MicroysMCO Sedan Drivers in Action at BARC Canadian Touring Trophy! August 13-14 turned out to be a test of metal and mind at the BARC Canadian Touring Trophy, sanctioned by CASC-OR road races at Mosport International Raceway!

Mixed weather saw a diverse and challenging set of conditions for the sedan racers at Mosport this August 13 & 14 for the BARC Canadian Touring Trophy races.

The Ontario Touring GT Championship round #5, saw the Armstrong Motorsports #44 Nissan NX2000 with Cindy Armstrong and Richard Muise compete. The fields were slightly reduced from earlier in the year, with only 18 cars taking to the track. Cindy placed 10th in Touring on the Saturday race, and Richard brought the car home 9th in class on Sunday’s rain filled event. Richard had one of the best races of his career, and his first in the rain, recovering from a few excursions and moments. He brought the car home in 9th place in the Touring class.

The Ontario Challenge Cup saw a very large field, as the season progresses past the halfway point. The field was 40 strong on the Saturday afternoon race. Rob Microys in the #120 Volkswagen Jetta had a long battle with his arch rival Mark Durant in the #106 Porsche 924 - with Mark nipping a spot, having Rob settle for 3rd. Tom Lang finished the first race in 4th place. Bob Armstrong brought the #33 Armstrong Motorsports NX2000 to a strong 1st place in GT-B. Something that he’s done all year, and he continues to dominate the GT-B standings! In a strongly contested GT-1 class, misfortune found Jim Harrison and he didn’t finish the first race, due

to a mechanical in his Porsche 911. Bruce Gregory in his 911 GT-3 Cup car placed 9th in class.

Sunday’s OCC races saw a change in weather, both races were preceeded by showers and the track was wet when the races started. The first Sunday race, Bruce Gregory 2nd in GT-1, Bob Armstrong 1st in GT-B, Rob Microys picked up 2nd in GT-C, Tom Lang 7th in GT-C. The race was quite damp at the start, but quickly dried. Those with heavy rain tires proved to be slow near the end of the race as the drivers were preserving tires and looking for puddles to cool them. The second race on Sunday saw a lot more moisture on the track with heavy showers leading up to the start of the race. The start was very busy, and was very slow. Many passes for position and tight tight traffic! The race progressed well for MCO members, most drivers having a few ‘big moments’ in corner 8, both Bob Armstrong and Rob Microys included! A car in the gravel in 8 brought out a yellow flag, and a one lap dash to the checkered flag! Bob Armstrong was holding off Bruce Gregory for the overall first place but had a near miss with the gravel trap in 8 coming in to 8-9-10 complex for the final time. Bruce Gregory came past Bob for the overall win and first in GT-1. Bob claimed top GT-B honors and 2nd overall in the race! Rob Microys finished a solid 2nd place in class on the weekend. Unfortunately, further back in the pack, earlier in the race Mark Durant checked up hard for a slow driver in corner 8, got out of shape and was collected by club member Tom Lang. Both drivers are okay, but were unable to complete the race. Good luck to them fixing their rides to get back out for the rest of this year!

Dominic returned in 2004 after being away from active competition for a period of time. He purchased a BRD with a V1600 engine in the chassis. From that first time I met him, the smile never left his face. Enthusiasm and excitement what more can you ask for?

After that first season under his belt, the car needed a few up-dates, Bob Duncan in Burlington stripped the car down to the bare tube frame and refurbished the entire car. If you thought that grin was working well last year, you should see him now.

Dom’s results this year are very impressive: BEMC – three 2nd place finishes, CRDA – two 1st’s and a 2nd. The speed is ever increasing and the smoothness was always there.

July Rally Report by Craig Hamm It is a hot one this year! The summer is in full swing and there is plenty of rallying going on.

To start off, stateside MCO member Matt Iorio came in 2nd place less than a minutes behind Antoince

L’Esatage at the Rallye Baie-des-Chaleurs, 1-2 July, held in New Richmond, Quebec. Matt is top driver

and MCO is proud to have him choose our club for his CARS affiliation.

Ian O. and Patrick L. have been topping the Novice leaderboards this year in the provincial navigational rally series, the Ontario Road Rally Championship (ORRC). Two wins (Blossom and Discover Ontario) and a 2nd place this weekend (16 July) at the Automapic have them 10 points ahead of the 2nd place team. I can tell you it takes a LOT of dedication and perserverance for an Ottawa team to run this series. Might as well win if you are going through all the trouble!

The first MCO Summer Night Rally (SNR), 29 June, organised by Robert Roaldi, had 10 Novice teams and 4 Expert teams. To date, this is our

best ever attendance for a summer rally. All teams reported having ‘a blast’ and want to come back. The event format is similar to the Mini Rally Series at Maple Leaf Rally Club, short events, beginner friendly, cheap, well run, wekknights, leaving summer weekends free. Craig H. and Alan R. teamed up for the first time in two years to take the overall win.

The next SNR is 27 July, organised by Patrick Leclerc (first rally organised) and is all paved, targeting those with ‘shiny cars’ that despise gravel. We are hoping for upwards to 30 teams. It reamains to be seen how summer vacations will affect attendance.

The last SNR is slated for 31 Aug, organised by Ian O’Halloran (first rally organised) and will return to gravel/paved.

MCO is setting 3 December for the return of the Golden Pine Rally, (Renfrew-Barry’s Bay-Renfrew) as it’s first running as an overnight drivex. The length is aproximately 360km. Organised by Ferdinand Trattmansdorff (first rally organised). I can tell you that Ferd has done an incredible job and the event is

mostly in hand at this early date! Well done! I even think all these new rally organisers are enjoying themselves.

As a reminder other rallies on MCO schedule are: 24 Sept. Fall Night Rally (R. Roaldi) as a night navex, and 29-30 October is the Lanark Highlands Rally, also an overnighter.

Due to ludicrously heavy rains in June, the Ontario Performance Rally Championship (OPRC) Maple Leaf Rally Club Black Bear Rally was rescheduled to the coming weekend (July 23) in Dorset, Ontario. Several MCO members are officiating and competing at this closed road event. If you’ve never been to a ‘performance rally’ this is a good one to see, as this year it is a full-length regional, using more than one road. After Black Bear, the next OPRC event is the Galway-Cavendish Forest Rally, hosted by Peterborough Motor Sport Club. As usual, volunteers are needed for all events, don’t be shy.

Rally On!

A summary of the discussion and recommendations of the RallySport Ontario Growth Planning Meeting held at Sir Sandford College on Sunday, April 17, 2005 has now been posted on the RSO website. To view go to www.rallysport.on.ca and click on Growth Meeting Results.

Items were prioritized by the participants as the last part of the exercise.

The RallySport Ontario Board will review the recommendations and make plans re implementation. We

00 + 0 = FUNGalway Cavendish Forest Rally 2004In Performance Rallying the roads are closed to the public and the aim of the rally cars is to go down those specific roads as fast as possible. To be able to do that in relative safety an extensive safety protocol is put in place. Other than closing the road at all possible access points marshals are posted all along. To start the event a course-opening car, Car 00 goes down the road making sure all the safety protocols are in place. Then Car 0 runs right before the competitors at higher speed.

Last year I was honoured to be able to be Car 00 at Galway Cavendish Forest Rally. It was a terrific experience. This year Peter Watt of the Peterborough Motorsport Club asked me to be Car 00 again and he said after the second run of six down the road he would take a “0” away from me…that was pretty thrilling news! It was to be a real opportunity for

me and I had one overriding thought…”Keep it on the road!”

That actually proved to be no problem as I purposely drove carefully and way below my and my car’s limits. I had to slow down in places as my slightly lower than stock car had to be babied over the “yumps” and the piles of gravel in the centre of the road. Not to say I wasn’t able to slide around corners and to make loud engine noises. It is pretty fun to drive with a siren blasting away and flashing lights on your roof and having spectators cheering the start of the rally. I will admit to making more engine noises and to sliding more for the spectators and the marshals for fun.

Ashley Preston from PMSC was my co-driver and radio operator. With the sound of gravel hitting the underside of the car and the siren and the engine it was pretty hard to hear the radio.

Ashley yelled out the cautions for the route, which was pretty cool. At one corner he thought I hadn’t heard “Don’t cut” and when he looked up I was in the middle of my Scandinavian flick heading at the thing he had just warned me about…but he figured it out instantly and didn’t hit me as we swung the other way around the nasty pile of dirt waiting to flip the unheeding.

In addition to the numbers on the side of the car, I had modified my Solo II number, 003, and ran with the large magnetic sheet on the front hood with MCO clearly identified. It was nice to be asked to participate in such a prominent way by another club.

Snookered!

Well I wasn’t sick, and I had a running vehicle, so I made it to the April Club meeting to find Craig Hamm handing out copies of the March issue of The Link. That’s March 2005 folks! Alan Ritchie, the new editor, has worked some wonders and our favourite motorsports rag is being published again and apparently it’s also intended to again be published monthly. As I was totally unaware of the progress made, I had nothing written with which to titillate both of my readers. I’ve been snookered!!! So, get to work Powell!!!

CASC as seen by ...

OK, let’s start with something on the lighter side. In my days with The Sports Car Club-Toronto in the ‘60s, I scribbled a few musings on the CASC logo for our club newsletter RPM - The Journal of The Sports Car Club, so I thought it would be a good idea to occasionally (i.e. when I’m in a panic for content) share them with you. Here’s the first pair:The “BP” logo (British Petroleum) is from the now long defunct “BP Racing and Rally Drivers’ Club”, and the drawings were made on free notepaper that they handed out by the ream.

The High Cost of Food

This is another of my non-automotive rumblings, but it concerns a topic that has bothered me for some time now. Reading the latest issue of the Eastern Ontario Farmers Forum I came across the latest of a series of troubling statistics, and these related not to the financial cost of putting food on our tables, but to the human cost . First

I must say that this is not intended to minimise in any way the recent tragic deaths of the four RCMP constables killed out west, or any deaths of police officers in the line of duty at any time or any where in the country, but, do you realise that there were 17 farming fatalities in Ontario alone in 2004. Most of these tragedies involved farm machinery, but in one instance death was caused by an attack by a bull. The ages of those killed also troubled me, as four were teenagers aged 13 to 17, and five involved farmers aged from 67 to 78, well past the age when most of us are enjoying a relatively safe and secure retirement.

There are many similarities between these deaths and those of police officers. Most were caused by combinations of the same factors: inexperience, overconfidence, failure to follow safety procedures, underestimating risks in a given situation, time pressures, not being in possession of relevant up-to-date information, and sometimes just plain bull-headedness (aka male ego!), to name a few. But there is another side of this that bothers me. When a police officer is killed on the job there are, and rightly so given that they are there to protect us, newspaper headlines, public outpourings of sympathy, and impressive memorial services. However, when a farmer is killed on the job, there’s ..... well, maybe a one-column by two-inch mention in a local newspaper, and even then not on the front page. So the next time you sit down to supper, remember before you put your fork in your meat or vegetables, that some member of a farm family may have suffered injury or death to put that food on your table. Oh yes,

and the same goes for fishermen too!

Father, forgive me ...

... it has been (mumble, mumble) years since my last confession, and I know that after the last time I confessed this peccadillo I vowed, for the second time, never to do this again, and on this occasion I even had to borrow money to do it as we didn’t have any cash, but ... well ... I bought another front-wheel-drive car.

Father, I know that after buying my first FWD, a used ‘79 SAAB 99 which had a good engine but was expensive to fix, the body was a rust-bucket, and you had to back it up icy hills even with winter tires, I promised I’d never again to buy another FWD car, and to return to buying used 140/240 series Volvos - you know, the real Volvos. Well, about ten years later we were again in dire need of a car, and with no good used Volvos around at the time we had to look elsewhere. The only thing available in our price range was an ‘86 Pontiac Grand Am, but it was a front-wheel drive, and honestly, Father, I didn’t want to buy it, but “she who must be obeyed” said she wouldn’t wait any longer, so I gave in. This was a mistake

too, as with my 6’1” frame, I found I that I couldn’t drive it for periods longer than about forty-five minutes, there was no room to work on the engine to change drive belts, spark plugs, and so on, it was useless, even dangerous, in the winter without four snow tires, had bad torque-steer in the wet or on ice, parts were again expensive, it started to rust out six months after we bought it, and finally the engine seized three years later in the middle of winter. And yes, Father, as I just said, at that time I again vowed never to buy another FWD, but I do have some very good reasons ... honest!

The old ‘83 GMC van that Susan used as a household run-around and for her theatre and arts stuff was getting really “iffy”. It starts fine and runs OK when it’s warmed-up, but the carburetor needs a re-build and has problems in winter with the automatic choke, so it gets about 50 litres/100 km, the exhaust system is shot, the parking brake is seized, it could use new tires, and the bodywork? From the front wheels back all the side body panels from about a foot high above the original bottom are ever more rapidly being converted into iron oxide and disintegrating, and there are two holes in the floor behind the rear wheel arches

which admit slush, mud and water every time it rains or snows. This must be one of the few enclosed cargo vehicles on local roads which requires that a tarp be used inside to cover a load when it rains! So, we had a daily driver for Susan that was expensive on gas, far from ideal for carrying loads in inclement weather, and which, given its rather ragged appearance, had to be driven very inconspicuously when in view of the local constabulary.

This situation left us with the ‘88 GMC pick-up to be used as the daily driver for both of us, but it, too has issues. It needs a tune-up, new rear shock absorbers, new parking brake cables (which I have but haven’t had time to install), it has a worn gearbox input shaft bearing, the door bottoms, cab corners and rear wheel wells are starting to rust out, and while gas mileage is good for a pick-up, it’s still costly to use as a run around. It’s also the only vehicle we have that can tow the race car, and with close to 310,000 kliks on the odometer, I can’t afford for anything major to go wrong with it through over-use.

So Father, what to was I to do? You know about the present state of our

Page 23: Announcement Race Weekend Miscellaneous Rumblings … Link-2005-09.pdf · t Ontario (RSO) t Racing Association ... Racing: BARC at Mosport April 30 – May 1 ... Miscellaneous Rumblings

Motorsport Club of Ottawa The Link Sept 2005 http://www.mco.org 23

household income, so buying another vehicle was problematical. I do, however, have access to a bank line of credit for use in dire emergencies, and we both agreed that such was our present vehicle situation. We decided that if I could find a reasonable daily driver for under $2,000.00 all up, then we could buy it. Well, there wasn’t anything that looked reliable and in reasonably good shape in a rear-driver that was small enough to suit Susan’s preferences, so I had to consider (shudder) FWD! There wasn’t a great selection there either, but then I found a ‘93 Nissan Altima for $1,200.00. It was safetied and e-tested, had a five-speed manual (which we both preferred to a slush-box), had a reasonably good reliability reputation, the price was reasonable for the model, age, and condition (it did have a few issues to be addressed), and although it was small, I could actually fit in the driver’s seat with a reasonably comfortable driving position. I realise that I was breaking my vow again, but it seemed that buying it was the only choice under the circumstances.

For my next sin, Father, I admit that I have coveted my neighbour’s goods. You see I know someone who’s building a fantastic-looking third generation RX7 for the Touring/GT series, and, ... you don’t need to hear any more? Nothing could be as bad as the first sin I confessed? Make my Act of Contrition? “Lord, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee ... “, and my penance is ... to publicly admit this sin? And no absolution unless I do? Was my sin as great as all that? Well, OK if you say so. “I, John Powell, do hereby publicly confess and admit that ...”

So, John, are you going to be out this season?

Well, that’s a positive “maybe!” As with last year, there have been “issues”, with a medical question being added to finances. The financial issue is at the same time worse than last year, as now all of the racing funds in my RRSPs are required to backstop the outstanding household financial obligations, but better in the sense that relief is more immediately at hand as the sale of our former farm land is much closer to being

realized.

The medical question was a result of the problem that forced me to withdraw after the first race of the 2004 BEMC Indian Summer Trophy Race weekend last September, and involved possible heart problems. I had an echo-cardiogram done in late October, and from the results my doctor referred me to a cardiologist, with the earliest available appointment being in February 2005. When I mentioned that that was normally about the time I get my annual Race medical, she told me there would be no racing until she got his report. Bummer! But things turned out not too bad eventually. It took until late March to get the results back from the cardiologist, but he had no concerns for this year although he wants to do another echo-cardiogram next March as a follow-up. The only remaining glitch is that due to the delays I now can’t get an appointment with my doctor for the race medical until the first week of June, but with having to wait for the financial situation to clear up, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

As for the car, I do have a little liquid cash in the race chequing account, and Mazdaspeed had a 10% off sale on competition parts ending March 31st, so I splurged on a few items. My main purchases were a set of Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable rear shocks and a 4.875:1 crown wheel and pinion for the differential. The Illuminas were suggested to me by Jim Susko of G-Force Engineering, as they will be a better match for the new (last year) 250 lb rear springs than the Tokico Blues currently installed, and the new rear end ratio will give better acceleration off the corners and up the back straight at Mosport than the current stock 4.0766:1, plus enable me to make better use of 4th and possibly 5th gears. We still have to decide whether or not the engine will require a re-build sometime soon, and there’s still a possibility of changing to a 13B with a road-race Holley carb and intake. I may also look at trying to remove some weight, such as lightening the bumpers and changing to a Lexan rear hatch and side windows, and adding side skirts to try to control airflow under the car a little better.

So all-in-all, if things go well it looks

like we’ll probably be racing again this year, but not until at least mid-season. It’ll be another short season due to circumstances beyond my direct control, which is a further disappointment, but what can one do but press on? As the old machinist’s saying goes, “Illegitimi non carborundum!!!”

Parting Shot

I’ve often wondered what they do if your Air Miles run out in the middle of a flight. Do they just open a door and give you a parachute? Or for JetsNoGo, a pair of cardboard wings?

Parting Shot II

This is another bonus shot, this one because you’ve been without one for s-o-o-o-o long. And because when I first heard this, I needed to rant!

On the TV news the other day I heard someone say that the Ottawa Police had proposed the introduction of a “Collision-Free Day.” Now I don’t know about you, and I suppose that this one may be a worthy if unrealistic goal, but I’m getting a little weary of people with various causes proposing a this-free or that-free day. Do they really think that they’ll make a difference in the grand scheme of things, except, perhaps, on some issues that already have a few converts? Consider these “... -Free Days”which I found from a very brief search on Google, and tell me if any of them have made a difference in your life, or anyone that you know, for that matter. There’s a “Car-Free Day,” “Meat-Free Day,” “Internet-Free Day,” “N-Free Day” (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), “Smoke-Free Day,” “Ad-Free Day” (yeah, right!), “GE-Free Day” (genetically engineered foods), and, well I could go on .... and on.

So, what I’m thinking of is one “... -Free Day” in each year which would be really useful to all of us. One day when we can be free of these idiots with their crusading appeals to make us do, or not do, something that’s their pet issue. I therefore suggest that we all call for an “Idiot-Free Day,” and April 1st would be a good date!

Charity Car Rally Results by David Butler

As the Coordinator (Organizer) for this year’s first event, I was both pleased and disappointed. I was disappointed that we did not have more entrants. I had heard that similar events have been held here in the past with more entrants but, at least, now we have a base from which to work on, in the future. I was pleased that the President, Ronald P. Woltman, and the Vice-President, Terry Dale, of the Motorsport Club of Ottawa (MCO) were on hand and pledged more support for future events. They agreed that the Children’s Treatment Centre is definitely a very good charity with which to be associated. For those persons, who did enter, we do and did thank them for their support. All teams made it to all of

the checkpoints. The trophy winners determined on points accumulated from the questionnaire are in the adjoining table.

The points varied in each section supplemented by Bonus Questions throughout the entire length of the rally. Section 1 – 1 point per question, Section 2 – 2 points, Section 3 – 3 points, Section 4 – 5 points, and Section 5 – 4 points. Partial points were awarded for answers that could have been construed as correct even though it was not the answer originally selected by Irene Harps, my Assistant organizer. These results are being distributed to

all participants, volunteers and to all concerned parties. Anyone wanting to learn more about Rallying is invited to attend the MCO Rally Group meetings in Ottawa on the last Thursday of each month and/or the regular monthly Meetings of the Motorsport Club Of Ottawa – held at Louis’ Steakhouse, 1682 Cyrville Road in Ottawa at 7:00 pm on the 1st Tuesday of every month. Guests are always welcome! Andre Lapointe & Bob Copeland of Seaway Hyundai will present the trophies they have provided during the awards presentation by the Children’s Treatment Centre is scheduled to take place on June 2 at Cornwall Collegiate & Vocational School (CCVS) [437 Sydney Street] starting at 6:00 pm.

2004 Solo II Reportby Chuck PayneI would like to thank all the volunteers that stepped up and helped out this season. It was YOU that made this season a great one!

A lot of the work was done between the final event of ‘03 and the first event of ‘04. Two volunteers measured every curb, light standard, drainage grate and parking spot to within a few inches. With these measurements, a template was created that we use to make very accurate course maps. We realized neither the CASC-OR, or the MCO for that matter, had a car classification system that made sense for our series, so a team worked to create a new one. We decided to upgrade our timing system so

we could run multiple cars at once. Volunteers worked to adapt the new software with the existing hardware. Our timing lights were in a state of disrepair so a volunteer took it upon himself to repair it. While CASC-OR struggled to redefine “the rules” the region runs by, MCO members were providing instrumental advice.

Throughout the season we’ve had volunteers running timing, scoring, registration and tech. Others were involved with course design, setup/teardown and the transportation of gear to and from the lot. A volunteer was bringing in a PA system from work. Others were purchasing water for competitors. An entire team of

volunteers worked to make the Solo II school a success. Another team spent an afternoon making sure the two Pro Solo tracks were equal. One member even spent his own money designing and building our new Pro Solo light system! Heck, people were showing up at events just to help out!

It fills me with pride to work with such a conscientious group of enthusiasts! You realized this is your club and your series and you stepped up to make it special! Great work everyone.take the next 5 minutes off, then start thinking about next season.

2005 Solo I ChampionshipThe current series is comprised of eight events held over four weekends, preceded by a Solo I school and dedicated lapping days. The series is administered by the Solo I Committee, made up of representatives from various CASC affiliated clubs in Ontario.

This information is to help Solo participants find almost all the information that they need in order to participate at Regional Solo I Events.

The primary source of Solo I information in Ontario can be found at: The Solo Ontario Website

Solo I in Ontario

Solo I got its start in Ontario in the late 1970s. A group of motorsport enthusiasts who wanted to enjoy the thrills and excitement of road racing - but who lacked the financial resources to compete in a full racing series - decided to create a new sport.

By using the parking lot autoslalom (Solo II) series as a model, these enthusiasts adapted the concept to fit on an actual race track. The early, informal events grew in to a series which has now gained sponsorship from major automotive parts manufacturers and includes contingency awards supplied by the tire companies.

The current series is comprised of eight events held over four weekends, preceded by a Solo I school and dedicated lapping days. The series is administered by the Solo I Committee, made up of representatives from various CASC affiliated clubs in Ontario.

The Solo I program has evolved to the point that it is recognized as a stepping stone to Regional and/or National road racing. Lessons learned in Solo I competition have proven invaluable to drivers who have subsequently found themselves racing internationally. In addition, the time spent behind the wheel in Solo I can

be directed towards a Regional racing license. This makes it easier - and less expensive - to progress up the motorsport ladder.

Understanding Solo I

In Solo I you are competing against the clock. The objective is simply to drive around the track in the fastest possible time. Unlike traditional road racing, you are not driving door-handle to door-handle with your fellow competitors, so the chances of damaging your vehicle are greatly reduced. Timing is electronic, and times are recorded to the thousandth of a second.

Competitors are released on to the track one at a time, carefully spaced. You drive a warm-up lap, several ‘hot’ laps, then a cool-down lap, and return to the pits. Although there might be several other cars on the track with you, their lap times will be comparable to yours, and the spacing ensures that you never catch up to them, or they to you. Thus, you are truly racing alone, or ‘Solo’.

Solo I Structure

There are four main categories of vehicle preparation in the Ontario Solo I Series:

Stock: This is the usual entry level for new competitors. The cars are essentially in ‘as delivered’ condition, with the exception of the required four point safety harness.

Super Stock: In this class, some modifications are allowed, by these are typically limited to suspension component changes.

Street Prepared: This is the last class that runs on street legal tires. Also, a combination of both suspension and engine modifications are permitted.

Modified: This is the final category, and it covers both open and closed-

wheel race cars which run on slicks.

Within each the above four groupings there is a further breakdown of specifications to enable similar cars to compete with each other on an equal basis.

During the course of a Solo I event, competitors are required to assist through their participation in marshaling, timing and management, technical inspection, or scoring. This allows the competitor to gather experience in the ‘behind-the-scenes’ activities of a racing event. It also helps to keep the costs down, thereby making Solo I more affordable.

The Series

The Loctite/Permatex Solo I Championship usually begins with an open house in April, followed by a school at Shannonville in early May. Then the series runs for four weekends (counted as eight separate events) throughout the summer, interspersed with several lapping days that give competitors a chance to work on set-ups, and to practice. The series usually concludes in mid-September, and there is a year-end awards banquet.

All the events are held at Shannonville Motorsport Park, using either the Nelson or the Fabi circuits. Please contact the MCO for further details.

Getting Involved

If you’ve watched road-racing on television, and thought you’d like to try it but didn’t know where to start, Solo I may be the place for you. It offers you the opportunity to get involved in a thriving, grassroots form of motorsport without the usual costs associated with road racing.

You will need to join a CASC-OR affiliated club, like the MCO, and it is strongly advised that you participate in the season-opening Solo I school.

For more information, contact a member of the Club Executive.

2005 MCO Solo II ChampionshipThe MCO organizes a club championship every year. The series usually consists of about 9 or 10 events in the summer, as well as 4 winter events. Currently held at the Corel Centre or Ottodrome, with a course defined by traffic cones.

Solo II is a one car at a time event. Drivers compete against each other based on their fastest timed run. For more information read the Solo II general information on the MCO website.

Solo II events are typically held in parking lots. In the past years MCO has held events at the Corel Centre, Alcatel, and Jetform Park. For those interested in getting involved in motorsport, this is the safest most affordable way to start having fun with performance driving.

Novice Information

Solo II is by far the most affordable way to become an active participant in Motorsports. Check out the general information on Solo II. This will give

you a basic understanding about the sport, and what is involved. If you want to know more about the MCO events, drop in at one of the Club’s General Meetings, on the first Tuesday of every month.

The single most important requirement for Solo events is safety. The rules and requirements which these events are run under require that all competitors use helmets when competing.
