Opening Prayer This beautiful prayer, traditionally called the “Klokker’s Prayer,” opened every worship service in many Scandinavian churches. A klokker was a lay member of the church who led parts of the liturgy and the hymn singing.

Hymn ….. “Come, Holy Spirit, Truth Divine” …. #194 out of Hymnal for Church and Home

All but one of the hymns in this service were written by two famous Danish hymnists, N.F.S. Grundtvig and Thomas Kingo. We will sing most of them today from the Lutheran Book of

Worship, but they were all included in the Hymnal for Church and Home.

Come, Holy Spirit, Truth divine, And witness bear that Christ is mine, And that I trust no other name to save my soul from sin and shame.

Come, Holy Spirit, Light divine, And let Thy light within me shine, That from the way of God I may not even for a moment stray.

Come, Holy Spirit, from above, Imbue us with the Father’s love, And lend to us Thy voice of grace to comfort every tribe and race.

The Confession of Sin Like other worship resources of its era, the Hymnal for Church and Home used the same Elizabethan English that the King James Version of the Bible did. We have retained that old-fashioned language in most parts of this service.

Congregation response O most merciful God, who hast given Thine only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us, and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Thy Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of Thee, and of Thy will, and true obedience to Thy word, to the end that by Thy grace we may come to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Collect

What is now called the Prayer of the Day was formerly called the Collect (with emphasis on the first syllable, COLL-ect). It got its name because it “collected” the prayers of the whole congrega-tion into one petition, following a specific format, that reflected the theme of the service.

The Epistle Reading: James 3:13-4:10 The Scripture readings today are taken from the King James Version of the Bible, which was the dominant English translation for over 300 years.

The Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus

Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost; Born of

the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; Was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended

into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From

thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost;

The Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins;

The Resurrection of the body; And the Life everlasting.

Prayer

Holy Communion This communion liturgy was used very rarely, perhaps only two or four times a year, in the days when the Hymnal for Church and Home was Faith Lutheran’s hymnbook. One church bulletin from the 1950’s suggests that communion services were held separately on weeknights, rather than as part of Sunday services. This infrequent administration of the sacrament was not due to any disregard for it, but rather to how highly it was valued. The conviction then was that receiving the Lord’s Supper too often would make it common and ordinary, and that people would not receive it with the reverence it deserved.

“What Does This Mean?”

Questions about Today’s Worship Theme: Mark 9:30-37

Why can “feeling strong” sometimes be a problem for athletes?

What were some of the positive developments at “Main Street Lutheran” at a time when it was “feeling strong”?

When Jesus had just predicted his suffering and death, why would his disciples have argued about who was the greatest?

In “The Race of Faith,” how does Christ promise to keep us “feeling strong”?

The liturgy and hymns in this service come from the Hymnal for Church and Home, a beloved hymnal among Danish Lutherans in America. Its hymns, many of them translated from Danish, were especially influential in shaping the faith and life of

churches like Faith Lutheran. It was used here until 1958, when a new hymnal was adopted as part of a merger into a much larger and no longer dominantly Danish

denomination, the American Lutheran Church.
