“O Come, O Come Emmanuel”

Minister: Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.

People: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoul-ders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsel-or, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. “Let Us Adore” Pastor John Bae

Minister: To us a child was born, to us a son was given. e Spirit of the Sovereign Lord was onhim, to preach good news to the poor. But who has believed his message?

People: e light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. We all, likesheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way. We considered him stricken andsmitten by God, he had no beauty to attract us to him. His form was marred beyond humanlikeness—we were appalled by him and hid our faces. But it was he who bore our sorrows:

“he was pierced for our transgressions,he was crushed for our iniquities;and the punishment that brought us peace was laid heavy upon him.”

Minister: O Suering Servant, sprinkle us with your blood, justify us by your righteousness andintercede for us transgressors.

ScriptureLuke 1:46-55

46 And Mary said,“My soul magnifies the Lord,

47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;

49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;

52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;

53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,

55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his ospring forever.”

Reverend John Bae

Minister: A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him - the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord - and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

All Together

Reverend John Bae

Minister: Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?

People: He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellow man, who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the Lord, who keeps his oath even when it hurts, who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.

Minister: He who does these things will never be shaken.

People: O Lord, have mercy on us! We have lied and slandered, we have harmed our neighbors and cast slurs on other men, we have honored the vile, we have sought comfort before integrity, we have withheld riches from the needy and withheld justice from the innocent. We are not blameless and we cannot dwell with you unless you have mercy on us.

All Together

Minister: “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

All Together

Q-105 What do we pray for in the fifth request?

A. In the fifth request (which is, Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors) we pray that God, for Christ’s sake, would freely pardon all our sins; and we are encouraged to ask this because, by his grace, we are enabled from the heart to forgive others.

Today’s Scripture - Genesis 3:8-19 (ESV)

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
