2019 ANNUAL BANQUET
Susan and Abe moved to Silver Spring in 1979. Susan was born and raised in Baltimore, attended Medical College of Georgia to obtain her degree in Occupational Therapy (OT), and then moved to NYC. Abe was born in a DP camp, raised in the Bronx and Queens, and went to Columbia for his BS, and NYU for his MBA. They met at Columbia, married, lived in Riverdale, and then moved to Silver Spring.
First renting an apartment in White Oak, Abe worked as a consultant in Washington, DC while Susan worked for PG County as an Occupational Therapist. They then moved to Woodside, where all four of their children were born. They lived in Woodside for ten years before making their way to Kemp Mill in 1989 and joining YISE. It is in Kemp Mill and as part of the YISE community that they raised their children. Leah graduated Yeshiva University’s Sy Syms School of Business and is now an internet entrepreneur. She lives in Potomac with her husband Dov Eidelman

and their son Zack. Atara graduated from the University of Maryland School of Social Work and is a LCSW-C who maintains a private practice in Baltimore where she lives with her husband Dovid Ziffer and their children Avigail, Akiva, Noam and Benny. Sharona received her MS in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing (SON) and went on to receive her Nurse Practitioner certificate from SON. She lives in East Boca Raton with her husband Yehuda Leib Seidel and their children Gavi, Leora, Aliza and Boaz. Moshe graduated from YU with a degree in accounting, worked at PWC as a CPA, and then graduated from Georgetown University Law Center; he presently works for Paul, Weiss in Manhattan. He lives in Bergenfield, NJ with his wife Esti and their children Simon, Mackenzie and Alex.
Susan had already become deeply embedded in the Jewish infrastructure of Silver Spring while living in White Oak and Woodside, having served as a co-President of Emunah of America, and volunteering for the Chevra Kadisha. She was head of the Woodside Eruv (working closely with Rabbi Heineman on Eruv maintenance), while Abe wielded a hammer on Colesville Road on the occasional Thursday night or Friday afternoon.
As their children matured, Susan and Abe became involved in the community’s educational system. Susan helped develop and manage after-school programs at the Berman Hebrew Academy and the Torah School. Abe was asked to join the Yeshiva Board around 1990, and may have the distinction of being the longest-serving local non-employee member still active, where he serves as head of the Finance Committee.

Susan started her private pediatric OT practice in the early 90’s, while at the same time working for Montgomery County’s Infant and Toddler program, providing direct therapy and consultation services to many members of the Silver Spring community. She was involved as a consultant to Sulam during its early stages of development and provided OT services both directly and through consultation for many Sulam students for over 15 years.
Abe continued to accept Board positions that were offered, becoming Treasurer of the Torah School around 2000, a position he still holds. And then he accepted a Board position with YISE around 2012-2013. Among his many accomplishments, Abe spearheaded the refinancing of the Arcola mortgage, with assistance from other shul members, and continues to work on a number of other projects. While continuing to serve as head of finance for YISE, Abe also founded the 8:45 minyan L’Chaim Group, which some might consider one of his most important and intoxicating contributions to our shul.
Susan still maintains her private practice and Abe still provides some consulting services to Booz Allen. They spend much of their free time visiting their children and grandchildren up and down the East Coast, while still fitting in their many volunteer activities. They look forward to watching with pride as their children and grandchildren get involved and take leadership positions in their own communities.

Ken and Elise both grew up in Maryland. Ken was born in San Jose, California and moved to Baltimore at a young age, just in time to see the Orioles win their last World Series and the Colts leave town. Elise was born and raised in Frederick. They were introduced to each other by Rabbi Anemer’s ZT”L sister, Mashe Katz, while Elise was living in Baltimore and Ken was in the downtown DC area.
Ken graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Fire Protection engineering. He has practiced engineering while at several jobs, including Arlington County (Virginia) and the Navy. He currently works for the Institutes of Health in the Fire Marshal’s office, ensuring the safety of patients, visitors, and scientists. He has obtained his Professional Engineer’s license and enjoys the challenges of engineering to ensure safety in the health science research community.
Ken is an active volunteer with several organizations. His service with YISE includes stints with the Youth and Safety/Security

Committees, and often provides insight for fire/life safety issues at the shul. He is a volunteer with the National Fire Protection Association, as part of a committee responsible for writing sections of the national fire codes. He also volunteers with the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. As part of the NIH minyan, Ken also occasionally helps out with various Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington activities at NIH. Elise has felt passionate about the shul since moving into Kemp Mill. She has served on multiple committees and tours of service with the Board of Directors at YISE. This has included 8 years on the board, including 2 years as the Secretary. She was the co-chair of the annual banquet 3 times, which has helped her realize how much she really enjoys event planning. Working with all of the honorees, learning the ropes of the shul, and leading the most important Shul fundraiser of the year have been very meaningful to her. Elise currently serves on the board, and is co-chair of the Youth Committee, along with Melissa Miller.
Elise graduated from the University of Maryland, University College with a degree in communications. She has worked at the Yeshiva of Greater Washington and the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital, and most recently at the American Nurses Association within their Foundation. Elise loves the challenge of fundraising, learning more about healthcare, and sharing this passion with others.
Along with daughters Talia and Mira, Ken and Elise are proud members of the Kemp Mill and Greater Washington Jewish community. Both sets of grandparents reside in Maryland and are very active in their synagogues in Baltimore and Ocean City. They take great pleasure in taking an active role with their grandchildren, along with the extended family many of whom also live in Maryland.

Kol Hakovod Ken & Elise!!
It’s readily apparent that you have truly found your Bayit at YISE.
The dedication you’ve shown for your shul over the past many years is exemplified by both what Elise has been involved with;
Banquets, Barbeques, Board, Youth, etc., and Ken with shul Safety, Youth and supporting Elise’s Board efforts.
It gives us all such Kovod that you are being recognized and keeping the traditions passed down by your parents,
grandparents and ancestors.
Your children, Talia and Mira, are learning what it means to be active, responsible members of their Shul and the Kemp Mill
community! We can’t wait to see what the future brings!
For Ken’s family, this moment is even more auspicious with their other son, Aaron, having just been honored, for the
2nd time, by his Young Israel Shul and school (Sharon, MA) 2 months ago for his involvement there!! It’s a once-in-a-
