ANNUAL CANADIAN DISASTER AND HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE TRAINING PROGRAM
01
“The interactive parts- tabletop exercises, jeopardy, aftershock game- were very good to integrate, contextualize the information”
Face-to-FaceTrainingProgram
The Canadian Disaster and Humanitarian Response Training Program is the only competency-based training program designed by humanitarian professionals for humanitarian professionals in Canada.
The global humanitarian sector has recently seen a period of intense growth and change,
greatly impacted by the complex and evolving nature of modern disasters. Rapid urban-
ization, chronically conflict-ridden regions and severe climate change related disasters
have translated into a global rise in displaced populations searching for security and
access to basic services. This constantly growing need has driven the demand for a more
professional and accountable humanitarian workforce that is well adapted to the chang-
ing circumstances worldwide.
The Canadian Disaster and Humanitarian Response Training Program is a competency-based,
performance-measured training program designed by humanitarian professionals, for
humanitarian professionals. Participants become proficient in core competencies that are
vital to safe and efficient work in the field. The core knowledge offered throughout the
program is of paramount importance for all humanitarian professionals; particularly for
logisticians, project managers, security personnel, human rights lawyers, and health care
professionals.
The Canadian Disaster and Humanitarian Response Training Program is the only program
of its kind in Canada that includes a three day intensive simulation exercise. Since 2013,
we have trained over 250 students from Montreal and across Canada, the United States
and abroad. Our instructors come from institutions and international humanitarian
organizations with extensive field experience.

BLOCK THREE
Simex
The Simulation Exercise is a unique opportunity for participants to practice their
core competencies in an immersive simulation environment. The 3-day field-based
Disaster Simulation Exercise (SimEx) is a highly interactive simulation set in the
fictional country of Simlandia, and focuses on the development of key skills such as
negotiation, applying principals of humanitarian law, safety and security, and
leadership. These skills are vital to good humanitarian practice and often are
the hardest skills to learn.
LANGUAGE: To successfully participate in the program, we recommend
that participants have at least a B2 English language level (CEFR).06
BLOCK ONE
Online Interactive Case-based Training
The Core Professional Humanitarian Training Program is a unique online
educational product in the humanitarian sector. It is a comprehensive,
competency-based, evidence-based, peer reviewed foundational program
for aspiring humanitarian professionals. The Program uses a variety of teaching
tools and techniques and can track and assess learner’s progress.
The 4 courses included in the Core Professional Humanitarian Training
must be completed prior to May 9, 2016.
BLOCK TWO
Face-to-Face Social Learning
The Classroom Sessions of the Program aim to engage students in
humanitarian-like scenarios, requiring them to apply the knowledge they learned
through the online course. This block is comprised of lectures, student
presentations and small-group tabletop activities that will focus on team
effectiveness, leadership, cross-cultural communication, and more. It will also
compound the knowledge gained in Block One, equipping learners with the
framework and skills to apply their knowledge in Block Three. The face-to-face
teaching is organized into daily sessions, each facilitated by an expert in their
specific field of humanitarian action.
