AAE 2019 Annual Conference: Where Asthma Education/Knowledge Falls into Place

Health – related companies get many requests to provide support for organizations and their meetings. The Association of Asthma Educators (AAE) is a nonprofit national organization devoted to utilizing education to improve asthma care and outcomes for all patients suffering with asthma or asthma – COPD overlap (ACO). Historically, the predominant part of this education program has been the annual conference. It draws people from all relevant professions who are passionate about asthma / ACO to one place to spend 2 ½ days learning about asthma and ACO, gaining new skills and insights. The 2019 meeting will be held in Buffalo, NY, between June 6th and 9th.

It would be appropriate to ask, “Why should we invest money to support AAE?” The key answer is support of improved asthma education for asthma providers. Of importance, from the marketing perspective, supporters of the meeting will have a unique opportunity to discuss their products / devices / serviceswith a large group of committed asthma fanatics with a wide variety of professional backgrounds from throughout the country. In addition, as you well know, asthma care is generally given by teams, so many of the attendees represent a much larger working group. Attendees will take what they learn in Buffalo home with them.

Realizing that our very diverse audience includes physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, athletic trainers, school nurses, community health workers, and health administrators (practices and health plans), we wish to address these key Gaps of Knowledge / Understanding with our program:*Environmental: impact on asthma, assessment and management;*Schools: safe and asthma - friendly environments, effective use of school personnel to improve asthma management, safe (and FUN) physical activities (remember that physical activity helps control the obesity epidemic);*Patient education: best approaches to help patients and families understand asthma and its management and, thereby, promote adherence to medical plans (constructed jointly between prescriber and patient / family);*Disease understanding: asthma fundamentals for those new to the area, asthma biology, COPD / ACO recognition and management;*Tobacco control and e-cigarette issues and need for further control.

As one might expect, the opportunity for attendees to network with providers from other parts of the country is a very important feature of the attraction for this conference.

Page 4: ANNUAL CONFERENCE June 7-9, 2019 · • 15 Minute Pop up Product Theatre during scheduled Break Bronze Sponsor contributes $1,500+ and receives the Benefits Package plus • recognition

In addition to the attraction of our meeting itself, is the fact that many health providers require regular completion of discipline- or state-imposed requirements for continuing medical education (CME). To address this need, AAE has begun production of “enduring educational materials” from these annual meetings. The talks are saved to high-quality videos which are then produced for later on-line purchase for CME credits by those who were unable to attend the meeting in person. Thus, this meeting will have a far greater reach into the asthma provider community than just the number of attendees able to come to Buffalo.

A major focus of the AAE in the past few years has been recruitment of pharmacists into our group and to increase general pharmacological knowledge among other asthma – focused professionals. The meeting now provides CME certification for pharmacists through the Univ of North Carolina. A portion of the program relates to innovations in pharmacy practice. In addition, an on – going part of the annual meeting program is the pre-course on pharmacology. This day – long course the day before the overall meeting provides asthma – focused pharmacology education and CMEs for pharmacists and nurse practitioners.

Other important components of the AAE mission are encouragement for asthma caregivers to become certified asthma educators (AE-Cs) as well as provision of the latest education of value to people working with patients who have asthma or ACO. In addition to the annual meeting and its enduring materials noted above, AAE provides three other types of courses multiple times throughout the year. These include the AE-C preparation course, the BAECM (Becoming an Asthma Educator and Care Manager) course and the asthma certification course for Community Health Workers (CHW). These courses are given by fully - trained asthma educators and are delivered at many sites around the country. Thus, support of the AAE Annual Meeting not only brings vendors face-to-face with many asthma fanatics, but it also strengthens the overall educational mission of the organization.

There will be an aggressive publicity campaign to increase the number of attendees from western New York and nearby Canadian communities. The large audience which we anticipate will provide any supporting company ornorganization important visibility and contact with passionate asthma fanatics, aswell as health professionals just starting their careers. The detailed program isnattached as well as an outline of the various levels of support possible for then meeting. Please contact our administrative team ([email protected]) to gain more information and to obtain a specific proposal for your company / organization’s support. We look forward to seeing you next summer in Buffalo. Feel free to direct any questions you may have for me directly to me at [email protected]. Thanks in advance for your support!

Sincerely,C. Michael Bowman, PhD, MDProfessor Emeritus (Med Univ S Carolina); AAE president 2018
