Dear Friends of St. Francis DeSales High School,

For half a century, St. Francis DeSales High School has been educating students in the spirit of St. Francis DeSales, who challenges us to “be who we are, and be that well.”

We ask our entire community of alumnus, parents, grandparents, and friends to invest your resources in the 2009-2010 Traditions That Last Annual Fund. Your contribution makes a difference in maintaining the tradition of excellence that you have come to expect. Together we can build upon this excellence today and tomorrow.

The cost of tuition only covers approximately 80% of the total cost of attending St. Francis DeSales High School. Since we are not a cost-based tuition school, we rely on the generosity of our benefactors to enable us to keep tuition affordable for our families. We are aware that today’s economic climate is challenging for everybody. It is due to these challenges we are asking you to support our students. This annual fund must raise $175,000. The annual fund provides the unrestricted dollars necessary to cover the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a student’s education. Your investment is a tax-deductable donation which assists in preserving the financial well being of our school.

As you consider your donation to our Traditions That Last Annual Fund, know that we can close this tuition gap and provide our students with a faith-based education reflected in our core values of faith, family, and tradition. We ask you to consider a leadership gift to our annual fund which will have an immediate impact on our students today.

God’s Blessing,

ANNUAL FUND DRIVE 2009-2010

St. Francis DeSales High School

Beginning with the vision of our founding principal, Monsignor James Berendt, St. Francis DeSales High School has grown into one of the finest high schools in the nation. We have achieved this through the hard work of our faculty and students and our dedication to our core values of faith, family, and tradition. We are proud of our accomplishments, and as we seek to continue to improve and advance, we will remain committed to our Catholic heritage.

This school started with a freshman class of 120, since then we have grown to over nine hundred students and our faculty has tripled. Over the course of time, we have made major additions and renovations to the school to accommodate the growing student body and to provide the best resources for our students. A few significant examples:

• In 1997, the construction of new theology, science, and performing art classrooms • In 2002, the addition of a visual arts wing, and renovation of the construction technology and family consumer science labs • In 2005, the complete remodeling of the Alumni Stadium featuring a turf field, 8-lane track, and first class amenities • In 2008 and 2009, the upgrade and expansion of our computer labs

It is our prayer that you will join us as we continue to build our legacy of excellence.

Faith at St. Francis DeSales High School is the cornerstone on which our community is built. We are a Catholic high school that welcomes students of all faith traditions. One of our primary goals is to develop students with the sense of love and compassion for others. SFDHS looks to accomplish this through our commitment to service. Two examples of our commitment to service is the annual canned food drive and Christmas in the Courtyard that brings holiday fun to underprivileged children. Additional service projects take place throughout the year with the help of various student organizations.

Twice designated by the U.S. Department of Education as an Exemplary Blue Ribbon School, St. Francis DeSales High School promotes a curriculum that is not only innovative, but challenging to students at all academic levels. Currently SFDHS offers twelve Advanced Placement courses and eight classes within the Dual Enrollment Program which is held in conjunction with Ohio Dominican University. We offer our students opportunities to gain college credit before graduation.

From our growing graphic arts department to our strong core classes in science, math, social studies, english and theology, students at St. Francis DeSales High School are receiving an education that prepares them to be insightful leaders in the 21st century.

99% of our students go onto college after graduation and on average our graduation classes receive over 9 million dollars in scholarships.

Student LifeWe believe that student involvement beyond the classroom is essential for developing responsibility and building strong character. Our students are involved in athletics, band, theatre, and over 30 clubs. The St. Francis DeSales Marching Band is one of the largest Catholic high school bands in the state of Ohio, and our theatre program brings over 150 new thespians to the stage each year. Our competitive athletic programs reinforce lifelong values such as the importance of commitment, the necessity of teamwork, and the benefit of physical activity. We offer 21 varsity level sports and have won 23 state championships over the past 30 years.

Dear Friends,It has been my distinct pleasure to be associated with St. Francis DeSales High School for 27 years. I was first introduced to this fine school as a student from 1975-79. As I reflect on those days, I realize how blessed I was to be in such a caring and nurturing environment. As a child of a single parent, I quickly learned to understand the sense of family and compassion that filled the halls. Had it not been for the compassion and generosity of others, I am quite certain that my mother’s dream of a Catholic education for her children would have gone unfulfilled.

This marks my 23rd year of professional service to my alma mater and my sixth year as Principal. During my tenure at SFDHS, my affinity for the school and the community has grown continually, and the reason is quite simple: I believe in the mission of our school and in the people who comprise our community. I truly believe that St. Francis DeSales High School makes a profound difference for the young people and families for whom it serves.

Every day as I arrive at St. Francis DeSales High School, I see our marquee proudly flash the words FAITH, FAMILY and TRADITION. It has been my pleasure to witness these words in action daily. The vision of our founding Principal, Monsignor James Berendt, endures. Our outstanding faculty and staff accompany our young people on their faith journey, while providing them with a preeminent educational experience that will prepare them to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.

As proud parents of four children, my wife and I have come to appreciate the tremendous value of a Catholic education. We have been blessed to see our children thrive in the nurturing environment associated with a faith-based school. We want to assure all parents who desire a similar environment that it is available at St. Francis DeSales High School.

The legacy of St. Francis DeSales High School was built upon the love and sacrifice of parents, grandparents, alumni and friends. As we approach the 50th Anniversary of our school’s founding, it is my hope that you will reflect on the favorable impact that SFDHS has had on you and your loved ones. Consider assisting us as we continue to create lasting traditions. Through your generosity, you will perpetuate the love and compassion so readily associated with our school.

In closing, please know that our community holds you in our prayers each day. Iwould humbly request that you keep us in your prayers as well.

Peace and God’s Blessings,

Daniel J. Garrick ‘79Principal
