Joyce Slipp Hall of Famer of 1992 and Sports AmbassadorWhen Canada’s first-ever women’s Olympic basketball team took to the Montreal Forum court in 1976, it was lead by New Brunswick’s own Joyce Douthwright Slipp. Joyce would continue on to travel the world as an elite athlete, qualifying for a spot on Canada’s national field hockey team. Her legacy consists of winning regional track medals, achieving world championships as a master’s level athlete, being selected as her university’s athlete of the year, and coaching successfully at the local, provincial, national and international levels. Since her induction in 1992, Joyce has been an advocate for the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame and generous contributor to our

mission as an organization. Joyce is also an active member in our Sports Ambassadors program which has inspired thousands of students in schools across the province.

Jamie Wolverton Executive Director, New Brunswick Sports Hall of FameJamie has captained the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame team, as Executive Director for more than 11 years.  Prior to that, he ran the largest recreational trails organization in Nova Scotia, as Executive Director of the Snowmobilers Association of Nova Scotia.  Jamie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Management from the University of New Brunswick.  Jamie lives in Fredericton, New Brunswick with his wife and two very sporty boys ages 12 and 14.  In 2010, Jamie took-up distant running and that quickly turned into a passion which is still burning bright – and he’s now ran over 10 full marathons and broke the coveted sub-3 hour mark at the 2015 Boston Marathon.

Shane MailmanDirector of Programs and Operations, Nova Scotia Sport Hall of FameShane has 20 years of experience in all areas of the organization which include Induction and Selection, Educational and Community Programing, Facility and Collections Management, Event and Fundraising coordination. Session 2 – Growing Engagement and Outreach

In New Brunswick, their initiative is called Sports Ambassadors and since its inception in 2010, Hall of Famers have told their inspiring stories during 900 presentations and impacted over 40,000 keen listeners. [Hall of Famer and Sports Ambassador, Joyce Slipp will be on hand to describe her involvement]. In Nova Scotia, over the past 18 months, has committed to some very fun and exciting public engagement initiatives and partnerships. Identifying the Top 15 athletes of all time ended with the largest sports dinner in our provinces history.

By creating hands-on exhibits that give visitors the opportunity to engage with often puzzling scientific concepts, science centres have been at the frontlines of interactive experiences for many years. And as more and more museums make the transition from traditional static exhibits to something more immer-sive and interactive, the challenges that come with making this transition become very apparent. In this session, you will learn of the challenges that many museums encounter including a limited number of staff and an even more limited budget. He will give examples of some of Science East’s successes – also some of less successful attempts – to provide visitors with a memorable experience that stays with them after they leave.

Michael EdwardsDirector of Strategic Initiatives & Exhibits, Science EastMichael moved to Canada from Scotland in 1992 to attend the University of New Brunswick where he completed an M.Sc. in Biology. He got involved with Science East science centre and museum as a volunteer shortly after comple-tion of his degree, a role which evolved into a fulltime job. When they opened a permanent science centre in 1999, he was the sole employee and spent his days in an old jail wondering when they would hire someone else for him to talk to. During his more than 20 years at Science East, he’s done a little bit of everything from planning school programs and summer camps, to designing exhibits and performing science shows. He has also give many conference presentations throughout Canada and US on topics ranging from how stu-dents view scientists to how to do an entire science class using just one sheet of paper.

Outing – Tour of the Kings Landing, our living museumWelcome to Kings Landing—are you ready to make a little history of your own? Kings Landing takes aim at how history is told and pushes the boundaries of open-air museums. This 300-acre museum houses over 70,000 artefacts, offers over 40 exhibits, theatre, workshops as well as a fully 1st person interpreted village where you can step back in time with a community of costumed characters in 70 historic buildings. From the American Revolution to the turn of the 20th century, Kings Landing is a collection of stories and events that shaped New Brunswick through settlement, the birth of the great nation of Canada, and to the age of progress.

Session 8 – The Art of Story TellingAt Kings Landing, we keep history alive through the telling of our stories. Our stories change and evolve depending on our audience as everyone experiences something different when they visit a living museum. Stories can be shared through the different senses; smell, taste, sound, touch or engagement. Stories can be told through a text, seeing artefacts in a staged environment, interaction with a first-person interpreter, costumes or hands on activities.

Ruth MurgatroydInterpretation Manager, Exhibitions Experience, Kings LandingRuth graduated from St. Thomas University in Fredericton where she received a BA in History with Honours. Passionate about history, the move into the museum industry was a natural fit. She was the Executive Director of the York-Sunbury Historical Society, Ltd. and worked at the Fredericton Region Museum for over nine years where she was responsible for all aspects of museum operations and programming. She accepted a role on the Board of Directors for the provincial museum association in 2011, became President in 2015 and is now serving as Past President. While with the association, she has been active in the museum community, both provincially and nationally. Her work at Kings Landing involves planning and overseeing museum exhibitions and related programming. She works closely with co-workers, partner organizations and experts to ensure that history is accessible, interesting and inclusive.

Session 9 – The Living Museum ExperienceA living museum is a broad concept but it perfectly describes who we are at Kings Landing. History becomes alive when it meets the public, whether through static exhibits, re-enactment or first-person interpretation. During this experience, a story is told. We can taste food our ancestors also tasted, hear a song, or purchase a souvenir to remind us of all these experiences. Living museums keep history alive through their stories.

Evelyn FidlerCollections Manager, Kings LandingEvelyn Fidler has been involved in the museum community for 35 years. At first, she worked for the Nova Scotia Museums while an undergrad at Crandall University and Acadia University before completing her graduate studies at the University of New Brunswick. During her studies at UNB, Evelyn was the Curator of the School Days and a research associate with the Micmac-Maliseet Institute. After completion of her graduate degree in History, with a Post Graduate diploma in Material History, worked at Kings Landing in various capacities until her current position as Collections Manager. She has completed a Post Graduate course at the University of Victoria in Collections Management and is a certified Archives Appraiser through the National Archives Appraisal Board. Evelyn also volunteers with the New Brunswick Mat Registry and is on the executive board of the Council of Archives New Brunswick and the board of the Association Heritage New Brunswick.

Pam GilbertInterpretation Manager, Village Experience, Kings LandingPam Gilbert has worked at Kings Landing close to 30 years. With a degree in Education she has always had an interest in working with children. She started at Kings Landing working with the Visiting Cousins program in the summer and school education programs in the spring and fall. After moving to the Village for 5 summers (still working with school children in the spring and fall) she returned full time to the Education Department as supervisor. Pam began developing detailed programming for the Village in 2013. Pam is now entering her 4th season as Village Manager, responsible for all the first-person interpretation, programming and Visiting Cousins.

Lois MacDonaldCrafts and Wardrobe Department, Kings LandingLois MacDonald came to Kings Landing in 1976 and has worked in various houses and positions throughout the village. She came with sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery and quilting skills that her mother and grandmother taught her. At Kings Landing, she learned many other skills relating to the different houses such as wool processing, rug hooking, straw hat making. She has taken care of the craft program since 1994 and then added the wardrobe department in 2005. Kings Landing has 24+ different styles of costume that have been copied from the Kings Landing, New Brunswick Museum and McCord Museum collections. The costumes are replicated for the interpreters to wear. Lois enjoys passing on her expertise to new and returning interpreters if they want to add to their skills.
