Building a Healthier Community

Message from Mimi Compton, President of the Board, Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment 2015-2016

August 2016

Dear Friends,

Thank you to all of our members for your support of the Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment over the past year. We enjoyed our eighty-second year of fellowship and service within the Alliance as well as the thirty-second anniversary of the founding of our Endowment.

The ongoing mission of MMAE is to be an advocate for a healthier Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Our advocacy comes in the form of educational programming and grant allocations. The programs for the year included presentations by physicians regarding the importance of sleep to maintain good health, the dangers of UV rays leading to skin cancer and the importance of patient centered care. There were also programs that were purely for entertainment – wine and beer tasting, holiday decorating ideas and learning about food and sampling tasty delights with a local chef. Our Community Health Classroom featured four clinicians who gave a very informative presentation about Autism/Autism Spectrum Disorders (Asperger’s Syndrome). This year’s Grants and Disbursements Committee chose eleven organizations in Mecklenburg County to receive grants totaling $69,000. Through these non-profit organizations, our money went back into the community to provide healing, both for the body and the spirit, for the most needy in our midst. Over the years, MMAE has given more than 1.5 million dollars to improve the lives and health of those in our community.

MMAE has a long history of launching or financially supporting community health initiatives. Past projects like Hospitality House, Teen Health Connection and MedAssist have made a positive impact on the health in our community. During the past year, the Planning and Development Committee began exploring ideas for a new project.

MMAE is a wonderful organization that makes a real difference in our community and I hope it will be making a difference for another eighty-two years.

Fondly,

Mimi Compton, 2015-2016 MMAE President

“We are sincerely grateful to be the recipient of a grant from MMAE to support education of our Clinical Teams. This training will impact the lives of those cared for by Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region. We are so honored that you value and support the work we do with patients and families facing end of life. On behalf of the patients and families we serve, thank you!”Christy Gisinger, VP Philanthropy - Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region

Assistance League of Charlotte is appreciative of MMAE’s generous grant for the purchase of hygiene kits for middle school children. It has enhanced our ability to fulfill an unmet community need as expressed by the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. Marion Zinkievich, Grants Chairman

MMAE has really answered the call to help youth and families in crisis. NeighborCare is truly grateful for this wonderful award from MMAE. Your commitment to helping youth have some normalcy as their parents are hospitalized is a true testament of what your values depict of promoting awareness of health related, charitable, scientific, and educational needs in the community. Because of your support NeighborCare will be able to prevent nearly 120 youth from entering the foster care system and create improved health and emotional outcomes for patients and their children, and keeps families intact.Curtis J. Joe Sr., Program DirectorThe Relatives

WORDS FROM OUR GRANT RECIPIENTS

We are deeply grateful to Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment for helping us make the Safe Alliance’s Domestic Violence Shelter a place where hope and healing begin. Medical providers who understand the complex issues that arise when domestic violence, poverty and homelessness intersect provided acute care, education, and referrals to 477 survivors and their dependent children in a safe and supportive environment. Thank you.Kathryn Firmin-Sellers, PhD. | Chief Operating OfficerSafealliance

OUR EDUCATIONAL IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

One of MMAE’s most successful, enduring programs, the Community Health Classroom, took an in-depth look at Autism and Asperger’s: You would be lost without them. Dr. Frank Gaskill, Dr. Kelly Bolton, Mary Moore and Josh Jensen with The Aspire Program at Southeast Psychiatric dispelled myths about Asperger’s Syndrome, and described how to enhance the strengths and abilities of individuals with Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Over 150 people, many of whom have children with this serious developmental disability, attended this educational program.

The North Carolina Medical Society Alliance sponsored this event as part of its charitable giving efforts.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Other Programs

Sweet Dreams are Made of This – Dr. Jason Peck, a sleep medicine specialist, spoke on the role of sleep as it relates to good health.

UV Is Not Your Friend! Protect the Skin You’re In! – Dr. Richard White discussed how researchers in Charlotte are leading the fight against melanoma.

Peace and Revitalization: A Visit to Mercy’s Healing Garden named for one of our members Lois Benjamin and her husband Dr. Sandy Benjamin.

The Pursuit of Perfection in an Imperfect World was the subject of humorist and columnist Tracy Lee Curtis’ talk at the MMAE Annual Meeting.

The James Gray Cannon award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, on a voluntary basis, toward the advancement of medical care and good health in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. This year’s recipient is Laura Stallings Funderburg. Laura was nominated for her dedication, compassion and dependability as a volunteer at Arts For Life, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting pediatric patients and family members through visual art, music and creative writing education.

In her nomination letter, Rachel Zink, Executive Director, wrote, “Laura brings top-notch arts education to pediatric patients in her work with Arts For Life, and we rely on her for the standard of excellence she brings to every volunteer shift.”

She is currently also serving in an executive role on the board of Arts For Life as secretary as well as being involved in strategic planning and fundraising.

Laura’s philosophy and commitment is reflected in her own words, “Arts For Life’s” mission is a personal one for me, as it perfectly mirrors my life-long desire to nurture the minds and spirits of children facing serious illnesses and disabilities, and to encourage positive healthcare experiences for those children and their families. The time I give seems very insignificant compared to the long and painful journeys that many of these children face, but the lesson I have learned is that a moment of creative joy can make the darkest days very bright indeed!”
