TWO MEMBERS APPOINTED TO NEBRASKA STATE BOARD

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, this summer appointed two Society members to the Nebraska Board of Public Accountancy (State Board).

On July 11, 2013, The Governor appointed Society member Marcy L. Luth of Grand Island to complete the four-year term of Mike Wassinger who died on May 2, 2013. Luth is a corporate shareholder with the CPA firm of Almquist, Maltzahn, Galloway & Luth, P.C. in Grand Island. She has served on the Society’s Board of Directors and will represent Nebraska’s Third Congressional District as an active CPA permit holder.

On September 9, 2013, the Governor appointed Thomas J. Purcell, III, of Omaha to an initial four-year term on the State Board representing Nebraska’s Second Congressional District. Purcell is a Professor of Accounting at Creighton University in Omaha and is a former Chairman of the Board of the Society. Pur-cell’s term began on September 22, 2013, and he will serve on the Board as an active CPA permit holder. He replaces Richard Zacharia of Frankel Zacharia LLC in Omaha who completed two four-year terms on the Board and because he joined the Board to complete an unfinished term, served on the State Board for about 10 years.

Both appointments were supported by the Society’s Board of Directors and recommended to the Governor.

Few organizations, regardless of size or industry, have escaped the shadow of uncertainty that has long hovered over the business community. This uncertainty has exhibited itself in ways ranging from intensified competition and market volatility to complex regula-tory requirements and widespread digitalization. In spite of the inher-ent challenges of this environment, a reengineered formula for organ-izational success has emerged and finance teams are transforming and reenergizing themselves in its wake.

Bridging the Talent Divide The finance team’s evolving

remit is largely due to its greater role as a trusted partner with senior leadership and the higher demand for a specific combination of skills needed to guide the organization. Key decision makers are looking for financial professionals who combine analytical and financial expertise with strategic, manage-ment and decision-making insights.

An American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) study, Rebooting Business: Valuing the Human Dimension, supports business savvy’s more prominent footprint in corporate America, with nonfinancial senior executives stat-ing that 68 percent of the value pro-vided to the organization is nonfi-nancial. However, according to Deloitte’s 2013 Global Finance Tal-ent Survey, there is growing con-cern among many finance execu-tives over recruiting, retaining and developing finance employees with such an in-demand combination of skills.

Management accountants, specifically those awarded the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation, are setting themselves apart from other professionals in ful-filling this unmet need. With their proven talent in both financial and management areas, coupled with their business acumen, manage-ment accountants are advancing into key advisory roles that are criti-

cal to operations and strategy. In the process, they are filling a talent void that, if not met, could under-mine sustainable growth and pro-gress.

“As senior leaders continue to look to finance departments for in-sightful management advice and direction, opportunities will grow exponentially for CGMAs to prove their value to organizations, both in the U.S. and abroad,” said Michael R. Nall, CPA, CM&AA, CGMA, founder of Alliance of M&A Advi-sors. “Among the ways CGMAs can ensure that their expanded new role will endure in the years

ahead is to reach out to fellow members of the CGMA community to share best practices, and partici-pate in programs that can further develop their skills, expertise and leadership perspective.”

Redefining Capabilities Similar to many of their peers

from other leadership disciplines, management accountants’ contri-butions span the full range of activi-ties, making a measurable impact on executive decisions, perform-ance and competitive position. Whether managing risk across a portfolio of projects, formulating

This year’s guide has been updated by members of the Society’s State and Local Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee coordinated by Dana J. Weber of Scottsbluff, and Russ Inbody from the Nebraska De-partment of Education.

The Guide was developed to assist accountants in preparing financial statements and reports for all Nebraska School Districts and was prepared with the cooperation of the Department of Education and the Nebraska State Auditor’s Office.

MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANTS DELIVER VALUE!

strategy or initiating and leading innovation and change, manage-ment accountants are helping fi-nance departments more proac-tively respond to leadership’s call for deeper, more hands-on collabo-ration and partnership.

Further building management accountants’ value is a skill set that extends beyond domestic opera-tions. “Management accountants and CGMAs are also making tre-mendous contributions to global and non-U.S. operations, especially in long-term strategic planning, short-term business planning, and monitoring and control,” said Hiro-shi Miyamasu, CPA, CGMA, fi-nance director at Nike Japan. “Among the benefits of their strengthening, multifunctional role has been a measurable improve-ment to the top- and bottom-lines at a time when organizations of all types need to be at their competi-tive best.”

As the new business man-date moves beyond core finan-cial accounting skills, manage-ment accountants are using a wide range of financial proc-esses to move business opera-tions forward. The following ex-amples underscore some of the diversity of their responsibilities:

Providing nonfinancial infor-mation and analysis of Big Data

Advising on internal and ex-ternal drivers of cost, risk and value

Performing rigorous analysis of the data leading to performance improvements

Sharing insights into product, sector and customer profitability to determine the success of marketing efforts

Driving cost-reduction strate-gies within finance and throughout the organization

Setting objectives to ensure that the business is run in the long-term best interests of stakeholders

Helping to ensure that remu-neration policy supports long-term value creation

Leading the identification and assessment of new business op-

MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANTS . . . From Page 4

portunities Developing financial aware-

ness and expertise within the or-ganization

Monitoring how organizational groups attain goals and contribute to performance

Ensuring that goals are shared across the business and appropriate resources are allocated

Management accountants are increasingly preparing and being recognized for their expanded or-ganizational role at a time when their contribution is strongly felt at all levels. According to a CGMA survey, New Skills, Existing Talent, 75 percent of global finance execu-tives reported that when finance professionals support manage-ment, the organization better meets its objectives. In fact, there are few innovative organizations today that are genuinely successful without the influence of management ac-countants and other finance profes-sionals.

The New Skills, Existing Talent Survey also provides insights into

management accountants’ potential influence on future leadership initia-tives. When finance professionals and business managers were asked whether finance provided an appropriate training ground for fu-ture business leaders, the majority of each group responded that it was equal to or greater than other parts of the organization.

Sustainable Momentum Looking ahead, management

accountants will further identify new opportunities to broaden their scope of responsibilities, grow their capabilities and deliver even greater value. The result will be an organization that not only maxi-mizes and benefits from the full potential of the finance team but is also poised for long-term success.

BOARD SUPPORTS EXPERIENCE RULES Following its annual Board Re-

treat, the Society’s Board of Directors held a quarterly meeting on August 24, 2013, at the Courtyard by Marriott in LaVista.

Presided over by Chairman of the Board Patrick Lavelle of Omaha, the Board discussed current Society and CPA profession issues and planned for the future.

Among the actions taken at the afternoon Board meeting, the Board:

Reviewed and accepted the drafts of the Society’s audit, Form 990 federal tax return and management letter for the year ending March 31, 2013, as presented by Joe Meduna of Grafton & Associates of Lincoln, the Society’s current audit firm.

Approved the Society’s financial reports of June 30, and July 31, 2013, and 26 membership applications.

Approved a motion that the Board supports the concepts in the State Board’s draft of “CPE Experi-ence” rules and regulations for the enforcement of LB27 that was passed by the Nebraska Legislature in 2013.

complete the term of Mike Wassinger of Hastings who died on May 2, 2013. Luth was appointed on July 11, 2013, and she resigned from the Society Board that day.

Chairman Lavelle also updated the Board on an August 12, 2013, meeting the Board leadership and Taxation Committee members had with Governor Heineman. The meet-ing was requested by the Governor to discuss possible state tax reductions and adjustments for consideration by the 2014 Nebraska Legislature.
