Pencoed Comprehensive School Headteacher’s Summary of 2014/2015

Last Year, Pencoed Comprehensive recorded another excellent set of results that kept us well up into the top 25% of secondary schools across Wales on the Welsh Government’s standards score. Furthermore, the school has not stood still in terms of working upon raising standards. Concerted efforts to raise levels of literacy and numeracy are showing improved outcomes for pupils. This means that pupils are becoming better able to access the work set in all of their subjects and are setting higher standards there. Our work here has generated significant interest from colleagues across other school and we have been identified as a consortium Hub school to develop English and Literacy across the region. Strategies to support our most able pupils have developed well over the past year. Several workshops and events have taken place, which have stimulated creative thinking and problem solving. Departments have a clear focus upon stretching more able pupils to attain the highest grades. We continue to strive to reduce attainment gaps for pupils experiencing disadvantage and for gender groups. Our successes have been recognised through an invitation to join a “Closing the Gap Alliance” between selected schools and the University of South Wales. We will be working together to further develop and model best practices. The mathematics department has been involved in school to school based research on reducing gender gaps in attainment. Pencoed has been selected as one of the Welsh Government’s Curriculum Pioneer schools. This network of schools has already started to work together towards designing a new school curriculum for Wales, in a major policy shift away from having the school curriculum imposed by government.

Our History and RE departments have been chosen as lead practitioners to develop teaching and learning in the consortium’s strategy to raise standards across the region. The school is moving further into collaborative working with a range of partners – not least in looking at exciting opportunities to work in partnership with Bridgend College on our sixth form provision. As you can see above, Pencoed’s reputation for excellence is spreading. The benefits of school to school working are delivering even higher standards of teaching and learning . Our continuing success is grounded upon a culture of high expectation. Teachers, pupils, parents and governors are increasingly working ever more closely together and are regularly holding conversations focused upon the potential and the achievement of individual pupils. Our five Guiding Principles underpin everything that we do: Pupils First; Learning Time is Paramount; Mutual Respect; Work Together Consistently; Celebrate the Best, Challenge the Rest. However, life at Pencoed Comp is not only about achievement on courses and in exams. There is so much more that we offer to support pupils in a multitude of different ways. There is also so much that our pupils do in support of each other and of the community. Our Annual Prize Evening provides us with the opportunity to celebrate achievement across the whole spectrum of school life. Thank you to the members of the school’s governing body for their unstinting levels of support and challenge. Thank you to the team of staff at Pencoed, teachers and support, for their expertise, dedication and commitment – absolutely critical to the individual successes of our pupils and to the continuing success of the school. Thank you also to our parents for your continued support.

ART

The Art Department has had another busy and successful year. EXAMINATION RESULTS At A2 Level our students achieved 75% pass rate with Meryl Maunder achieving an A* grade. At AS Level our students achieved 100% A-C and the ‘Excellence in Art’ prize is being awarded to Corrina Thomas . The Year 11 GCSE pupils achieved 87% A* - C , A*- A = 22% and our pupils were awarded 1 A* grade, 5 A grades, 5 B grades, and 11 C grades. ACTIVITIES FOR DYLAN THOMAS During the Summer Learning Core timetable as part of the celebrations of Dylan Thomas Year 7 and 8 pupils worked in the Art Department to study extracts from ‘Under Milkwood’. Pupils were asked to select one of the characters and then produce an illustration of this person. The resulting illustrations are really striking and are now on display in the Welsh Department. ART SUMMER SHOW We held the Art Summer Show in the Art Department in July 2015 and it was a great success showcasing the real range of artwork produced by our talented pupils. Parents, pupils, governors and staff were invited to see the exhibition of the coursework and examination work by our GCSE, AS and A Level students. GALLERY VISIT In December 2015 Year 12 and 13 students were taken to the National Gallery of Wales in Cardiff. They used the day to study the paintings and artefacts on display in order to develop their Art AS and A2 coursework. ART EISTEDDFOD COMPETITIONS Years 7 and 8 were asked to create a ‘Welsh Meal’ using a real variety of materials. We were delighted with the fantastic selection of entries and these are now on display in the Art Department. Years 9 and 10 were asked to produce a Welsh landscape or seascape and we were also very impressed with the high standard of artwork presented to us for judging.

SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted a beautiful winter scene using watercolour paints as part of her GCSE coursework. These cards were sent to schools, businesses, organizations and friends associated with our school. RETIREMENT In December Mrs. Kavanagh retired after 23 years of dedicated service in the Art Department. She has made a tremendous contribution to all aspects of the life of the Art Department and we wish her a happy and healthy retirement. We are now very fortunate to have Mrs. Bevan teaching Art alongside Mrs. Williams.

BUSINESS STUDIES/TRAVEL & TOURISM DEPARTMENT As a department once again we achieved 100% success at A2 in both Business Studies and Travel and Tourism. Also, 100% at AS level and for the second year running our best ever GCSE percentage pass rate, A*-C 100%. Our Applied Travel & Tourism and Business coursework was highly praised by the external moderators. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our pupils, who across both Key Stage 4 and 5, produced some of the best results the department has seen for many years. The department is thrilled to say that we now have two well equipped rooms with 60 computers available for our pupils to use. This has meant a massive improvement to the teaching and learning of our pupils in dedicated business suites. We hope this will add to the continued success for all our pupils. Yr 12 AS Travel & Tourism pupils have continued to use many of our business partners for their assignments – many thanks must go to them. The collaboration is continuing and this year we once again have pupils joining us from Maesteg, Y Dderwen and Brynteg. Yr 13 A2 Travel & Tourism students arranged various trips to Heatherton adventure Park in Tenby, Odeon Cinema in McAurther Glen and a paintballing day out near Cardiff. All trips were successful and gave the pupils a valuable experience in organising days out. The year 12 Applied Business pupils are all undertaking digital portfolios on businesses ranging from Jack Wills, Staedler, B&Q and more locally The Star Inn.

Page 9: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

The year 13 pupils have all set up virtual businesses in the form of a Business Plan with businesses ranging from dog walking, personal trainers, and car valeting service to cosmetics consultants. Yr 11 are continuing with their BTEC coursework with 100% of pupils having gained a C grade or above equivalent in year 10 to give them one GCSE and are completing final modules two give them another GCSE this year. In year 10, pupils are well underway on their BTEC course and again we hope for 100% pass C or above this summer. It has proved to be very successful and we hope that all pupils will leave their two year course and the end of year 11 with two GCSEs equivalent.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

The Lewis Watkin Shield award in Design & Technology goes to Daniel Morris, a year 11 pupil who is an innovative designer and engineer. Daniel is studying both BTEC Engineering and GCSE Product Design. In Engineering he is currently manufacturing a creative Point of Sales display for a model electrical device that he has also made. Daniel has high aspirations and wants to go on to study AS Level Product Design next year.

The Trevor Williams Silver Medal is awarded to Caitlin Sweet, a year 11 pupil who is currently studying GCSE Product Design with a great deal of success. She is a driven young lady who always offers 100% effort in every project and lesson. Caitlin is currently working as part of an engineering team to represent the school in the EESW competition at the Celtic Manor, Newport. This competition is aimed at sixth form pupils. However, Caitlin has played active role working with local industries to develop a solution to reuse computer server heat more effectively.

DRAMA and PERFORMING ARTS

Not everyone aspires to be or is going to be an actor. However, this is the age of the ‘presentation’ where products and ideas are sold in a competitive market on the basis of how well the presenter can vouch for his/her point of view. No-one is exempt from the need to be able to communicate with each other. The scientist, the businessman, the engineer, the bank manager, the shop assistant, the hairdresser all require the skills that Drama and Performing Arts can offer. Interviews require confidence and assertiveness, an ability to speak at ease and with audibility and relaxed appropriate body language. The Drama and Performing Arts Curriculum at Pencoed Comprehensive School covers a range of skills. On the one hand we prepare the student for KS 3, GCSE and A Level Drama, but the lessons are also an excellent platform for every individual to develop life skills needed in the future.

Once again we were delighted with our examination results with ALL GCSE and A LEVEL pupil reaching or exceeding their predicted grades.

At GCSE ALL PUPILS ACHIEVED A ‘B’ GRADE OR HIGHER!

This year we have set very high targets for all our students based on their attitude to learning in the Drama classroom. There is a particular focus in independent learning and many students now actually teach part of the lessons or go into younger year groups and teach them. They also set their own homework tasks, lesson objectives and mark their peers’ work. This is a very successful part of the department ethos.

However, Drama also continues develop outside of the classroom in Pencoed and in July, over 140 students will perform in BACK to the 80’s on July 14th – 16th 2016 and we are all looking forward to this performance after the huge success of last year’s show. We have more pupils in the cast than ever. Get your tickets early! A residential rehearsal weekend in January, involved 44 of the cast spending the weekend in Dan-y-Coed educational centre in Swansea, putting the finishing touches to the show. It is not too late to join the show and we meet every Thursday after school.

Back to the 80’s is not the only production we are working on; Mrs Hewitt is busy rehearsing a lower school production with over 60 Key Stage Three pupils. GUYS and DOLLS is our second full scale lower school show following on from the excellent performance of ALICE last year. It takes place on June 8th, 9th and 10th.

Our feeder primary schools were invited to join us for the Annual “MOVING ON UP” Easter show. We visited primary schools in January to deliver drama and dance workshops.

PAGE TO STAGE was an exciting new literacy project that took place in Oct 2014. It was aimed at Year 9 pupils and in particular targeting boys with a view to inspiring new writing and stage production. Every Year 9 pupil was encouraged to enter an original play script for the festival and four were chosen to be performed in a grand presentation evening. Prizes were awarded for Best Writer, Best Actor and Best director. We are delighted to announce that this event will run bi-annually and therefore work will begin on the new plays in the Summer Term.

The DRAMA pupil committee have met every fortnight this year led by Sophie Bamford and Tom Pound in Yr 13. They are organizing fund-raising events for Back to the 80’s as well as contributing new ideas for the department in terms of lesson content and schemes of work. The Dance Evening, Year 7 Disco and Christmas Carol singing on Christmas Eve have raised over £500 so far.

45 pupils spent two days in London just before Christmas and watched productions of ELF and THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME.

Nearly 50 students from Pencoed attend the fantastic youth theatre, film and dance group called THE LIGHTNING HUT every Saturday. This is an exciting venture set up by TORNADO FILMS and run by our own Head of Drama Kay Smith and colleague Alex Hewitt. It has been a massive success and has nearly 80 members aged 2 yrs – 20 yrs. The Lightning Hut is now in its fifth year and has its home in the drama studio in school and continues to go from strength to strength. Last year, many of our students spent a week on set filming a feature film called THE BERSERKERS which has been released worldwide on DVD!

The teaching in the Drama Department is based on the following Chinese Proverb:

"Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I will remember. Involve me and I will understand."

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award operates throughout the UK , with approximately 275,000 young people taking part in the scheme. The programme’s objective is to provide an introduction to worthwhile leisure activities and voluntary service, as a challenge to the individual to discover the satisfaction of achievement and as a guide for those people and organisations who would like to encourage the development of their young fellow citizens.

In July 2015 twelve of our Year 10 pupils qualified for their Bronze Award after their expedition in the Merthyr Mawr/St Brides Major area. Ten of our Year 13 pupils went on the Silver Practice Expedition to the Gower in October. The Silver Qualifying Expedition is planned for the summer term. Hopefully the weather will set fair for the expedition – not too hot or too wet!

ENGLISH

It has been another busy and productive year in the English department and once again we were delighted to celebrate good results at GCSE last summer. Staff and pupils have continued to work hard to ensure that the high standards achieved in recent years are maintained. There were some impressive achievements at A Level and Year 9 acquitted themselves admirably at Level 5 and above. We would like to offer our congratulations to all our pupils on their achievements during the last academic year. The department said farewell to Mr A Lillford at the end of 2015 after leading the department for three years. Mr Lillford took up a post as Head of English in St. Cyres School in Penarth and we all wish him well for the future. Following his departure, we were delighted to welcome Mrs S Llewelyn to lead the department. Our new incumbent was previously a lecturer at Gorseinon Sixth Form College and beforehand a teacher in the Ammanford district. It has been wonderful to share her vision and enthusiasm in recent months and the department are grateful for her guidance and constant support. There have been many highlights throughout the year and the department continues to enrich the curriculum with a range of additional activities for pupils at all levels. In October, the department held their second annual ‘Gothic Party’ where pupils were able to read their gothic stories to a wider audience. Miss K Torpey arranged the event and it was a resounding success. The English department stage was decorated and a wonderful gothic atmosphere was created. Pupils were invited onto the stage to read their stories to a selected audience amid dimmed lighting and eerie shadows. It was thrilling for everyone involved. Many

thanks go to Miss Torpey for all the hard work in staging this event. We eagerly await the next ‘Gothic Party’ in the Autumn Term of 2016. Before Christmas, a number of pupils in Year 7 were taken to see a production of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff. The production was most enjoyable and everyone returned full of praise and excitement after the performance. The Year 7 ‘Readathon’ took place once again during the Autumn Term. The department have been taking part in the national ‘Readathon’ since 2007. Entering the event encourages our pupils to read additional books and contribute to this important charitable cause. This year, the pupils raised £223.00 for the charity through their sponsored reading activities. Since 2007, our Year 7 pupils have raised a total of £3027.69 for ‘Readathon’ charities. Money collected is donated to enriching the lives of sick children in hospitals throughout the country by providing reading books for hospital wards and paying for story tellers to visit hospitals to work with children. The department would like to thank all of you who have sponsored the children to read for the ‘Readathon’. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and we are very proud of the great amount of money we have raised since 2007. Well done to the children and all our supporters. We have enjoyed great success during recent years in local and regional debating competitions. This year, Jasmine Greene, Jenna Dyckhoff and Olivia Shellard, pupils in Year 11, competed in the local Churchill Youth Speaks Competition and were highly commended on their excellent performance. They were runners-up in the competition and their enthusiasm and commitment is worthy of praise. In readiness for June, pupils are currently practising for a debate which will take place in the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. The topic of the debate is ‘Animal Cruelty’ and we wish our pupils all the best in this competition. Our thanks go to Mrs Smith for working so hard with the pupils to prepare them for debating competitions. Mrs Smith has had tremendous success in recent times with her debating teams and it is so encouraging that the tradition is continuing. Year 10 pupils will shortly be visiting the theatre to see a play version of the novel entitled, ‘Of Mice and Men’. The department try, where possible, to take

our older pupils to see productions of the set works they are studying because we firmly believe that seeing the plays on stage supports the pupils with their understanding of the texts. We would like to thank Mrs Slater for organising this trip for the pupils. The department continue to run activities during lunchtime so that the pupils can develop their skills. A writing club, reading group, word search group and film club run throughout the week and all pupils are invited to take part. The department continue to work closely with Kirstein Willock from the Central South Wales Consortium. This term we hosted an event for visiting English teachers who were welcomed to the department and worked collaboratively to produce schemes of learning for the new GCSE specification. It was good to see so many visitors in the department and talk to colleagues from other schools in the area. Year 8 pupils were encouraged to enter a ‘Young Writers’ competition this year. Many successful pieces of creative writing were entered for the competition and our pupils were enthusiastic and excited about the event. Our thanks go to Miss Casson for organising this competition. Miss Casson has also been busy setting up a blog for her Year 8 English class and her enthusiasm for exploring new and exciting ways to engage the children in their learning is much appreciated by the department. The alumnus writer, Alistair Reynolds, has been back to the school once again this year to work with our pupils in Key Stage 4. He has been encouraging them to write in new and exciting ways and we are very grateful for his contribution. We would like to thank him for sharing his skills and expertise as a writer with our pupils. After Christmas we were very sad to say goodbye to our school librarian, Mrs Karen Abraham. Mrs Abraham has been a huge support to the English department for many years and we would like to thank her for everything she has done and wish her the best of luck in her new post at Bridgend College. Mrs Rhian Tilley was also a close friend to us in the English department and we send

her our thanks for all the help she has given us over the years and best wishes for the future. We are delighted to welcome Ms. Megan Rule as our new Librarian to Pencoed. Onward and upward…

MEDIA STUDIES

A career in the media is something that students often dream about but never believe they can achieve. In South Wales, the Creative Industries is a real growth area and with Pinewood Studios opening in Cardiff, there will be thousands of jobs available in the very near future.

Media Studies in this school gives pupils some of the skills they need to pursue such a career. They will be taught to use Applemac computers, photography, filming and editing. They will also get used to working in teams to create media projects such as music videos and short film sequences. The subject has always been popular and many choose it as an option because its ‘hands on’. Year 10 GCSE students are currently enjoying the challenge of using the Apple Mac to produce newspaper front pages. Year 11 have just completed their own pop-music magazine covers using Photoshop and coursework at A Level is produced as a blog, using multi-media attachments. All work at A level is produced digitally. A2 students are just putting the finishing touches to their pop music videos and AS students have just completed their thriller film openings, using the latest imovie software. A level results in 2015 were very pleasing with 100% achieving A-E grades and 60% A-C. AS results were similar with 100% A-E and 60% A-C This year’s GCSE pupils are expected to achieve their target of 72% A-C grades.

Page 17: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

The screen and projector are now installed in the resources area upstairs in Block One and the ‘showcase’ for the A level films has become a regular event during the Summer term. This year the best films were shown in the Eisteddfod to a very appreciative audience. Events like these give A level pupils the opportunity to showcase their work to a real audience and gain from feedback. The media photographic ‘studio’ has now been completed in the ‘Macroom’ so that pupils can take part in photo-shoots for future magazine covers. Many of our GCSE students posed for photographs last term, the results of which will be used for their coursework. A new SLR digital camera and a set of studio lights have been purchased with the intention of setting up a photography club in the summer term. When we install the green-screen as well, pupils can add ‘special effects’ to their photos and thriller films.

GEOGRAPHY

This has been another fantastic year for the Geography Department at Pencoed Comprehensive. Examination results were very good and reflect the hard work and dedication of both the staff and students. 71% of students achieved A* - C at GCSE. 83% of year 11 pupils who sat the higher tier paper achieved A and A* Grades. 100% achieved A* - C at AS level and 92% at A2. We were particularly proud of Caitlin Jenkins who achieved an A*grade at A2 level. We would also like to congratulate the pupils who exceeded expectations and we would like to take this opportunity to say ‘well done’ to everyone. The Chris Powell Memorial Award for Geography has been awarded this year to Thomas Williams for dedication to AS and A2 level Geography. He has shown determination to succeed and maturity throughout the course. Well done! Field trips have again been a beneficial and important part of our students’ learning, allowing pupils to experience different places, cultures and landscapes. Visits have included the Gower Peninsular, Cadbury World in Birmingham, Dale Field Studies Council in West Wales, Sorrento in Italy and Iceland. We are

Page 18: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

continuing to develop our online learning resources which offer pupils learning support outside normal school hours and run a lunchtime support club for students. The department is particularly proud of all its Geographers in all year groups in the way that they approach the discipline with passion and an ongoing willingness to learn about the world around them. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the hard work of Mrs. Gill Spicer who retired in July. She brought a light-hearted approach to the day to day delivery of the subject and her knowledge of global events meant that her students were able to grasp the gravity of causes and effects of issues on both a local and global scale. Over her decades at Pencoed Comprehensive, she has prepared thousands of students for the real world. She is sorely missed. We have welcomed Mrs Sarah Llewellyn and Miss Katie Needs who are doing an excellent job.

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE & FOOD TECHNOLOGY In order to develop the students’ understanding of the subjects, the department has recognized that the pupils benefit from external speakers/contributors and we are building this into the delivery of the courses. We have been fortunate enough to have visits from Health and Social Care practitioners from the Local Authority and this has provided the students at A level with a valuable insight into the professions. Making contact with parents and relatives of pupils who work in the industry has also been useful as they have been able to provide first hand information about different jobs in Health & Social Care. This greatly enhances pupils’ experiences and subject knowledge. We are continuing to develop links with Health and Social Care providers in the local area and have made contact with Occupational Therapy, Alzheimers Society and The British Heart Foundation & Arthritis Care & Fostering Services which has greatly benefitted our A level students. We are always keen to develop further links with practising health & social care professionals as this gives our students first hand information which is invaluable. The Food Technology GCSE group has also raised money for the department by making and selling cakes for Sports Day which has allowed us to develop resources and we are hoping to build links with local food production industries in order to develop their knowledge.

HISTORY

Examination results The department would like to congratulate all History students for their work ethic and commitment which contributed to the excellent results they achieved last academic year: GCSE: Congratulations to all pupils who achieved excellent GCSE results in Summer 2015. We have welcomed 14 pupils to study AS History. We had a successful year with Year 11 students alongside record breaking results being attained by

our Year 11 co-hort who sat the USA outline paper. We look forward to August 2016! AS: AS History students continued the tradition of high standards within the history department and produced a pleasing set of results. Congratulations! They are now working hard on completing their coursework and preparing for their HY4 examinations. A2: The department would like to congratulate our 2015 A2 History students. We are very proud of their achievements. A number of students have continued their studies of History at university and we wish them the very best of luck for their future. Pencoed Town Council History Prize The History award is shared between two Year 11 students – Callum Johnson and Kayla Davies. Both students have shown an excellent work ethic towards their GCSE History course. We look forward to celebrating their results in the summer after very pleasing modular marks from last year’s examinations. Congratulations! Department news The history department has welcomed new colleagues within the department who have all made significant impact on the progress and direction of the department. Mrs Hewitt, Mrs Smith and Mrs Edwards are now teaching KS3 history. Furthermore, Mrs Llewellyn and Miss Needs are new additions to Pencoed and the history team! Miss Needs has also relaunched the History Club which is very well attended on Wednesday lunchtimes.

ICT The department has continued to enjoy success over the past 12 months, with continued success at all key stages. At Key Stage 3, 99% of students gained level 5 and above, 89% achieving level 6 and 34% achieving level 7. This ranked the ICT Department in the top quartile in

the family of schools we are compared with. This is a tremendous achievement and a credit to the students and staff who work with them. Our GCSE results were once again excellent. The A*to C pass rate was 87% with 136 entries. Our GCSE course remains popular with high numbers opting to choose it this year. A-Level also remains a popular course with classes full to capacity. We are successfully running Essential Skills Wales ICT at level 2 as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. All pupils entered in year 10 and 11 were successful in achieving this qualification. GCSE Educational visit to New York October 2015 The ICT department continues its proud tradition of running exciting extra-curricular excursions. In October half term 2015, we took a number of year 11, 12 and 13 pupils on a visit to New York. The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the pupils were an absolute credit to themselves and the school. Due to the ongoing success we are running another trip to NYC in October 2017. Letters for our current year 10 and 11 pupils will be out soon.. Cross curricular ICT This continues to be a success within the school. Departments continue to make excellent use of ICT to develop the learning of the pupils. The PE department uses Twitter to update pupils. The media department has an Apple Mac suite and has developed a photo-shoot area to utilize the numerous digital cameras and video camcorders available to the students in ICT and Media. The music department also has a Mac suite for sound recording. The school website is professional and easy to navigate and continues to provide up to date news on upcoming events within the school.

LEARNING SUPPORT

Ms McMahon took up the role of Additional learning Needs co-ordinator in September, taking over from Mrs Joy. Pupils with additional learning needs are well supported by teachers, assistants, pastoral staff and the senior leadership team. Dyslexic pupils in Key Stage 3 receive small group intervention from Mrs

Randall. She also runs the ‘Talkabout’ programme with small groups in Key Stage 3 to support pupils with social and emotional issues. A number of pupils benefit from support in class from our Learning Support Assistants. We have close links with a range of professionals from the Local Authority and a number of pupils work with specialist teachers for dyslexia, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, English as an Additional Language and Behaviour. Together with Mrs Cain, the ASD support teacher, we have started a ‘self help’ group for ASD pupils where pupils share their worries and problems and help each other to find strategies and solutions.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

We now have five classes in the LRC, one class per year across Key Stages 3 and 4. Pupils are well supported by a team of teachers and Learning Support Assistants. Year 7 pupils and 8 pupils are working to earn ‘Class Dojo’ points for their positive behaviour and attitude and hope to meet their class target and earn a class trip. Pupils from both classes have enjoyed participating in fishing trips with the local Rotary Club. Year 7 are enjoying packing and distributing the fruit and veg each week as part of our involvement with a local co-op. Year 8 recently enjoyed taking part in a trip to Cadburys World whilst Year 9 have been to the McArthur Glen retail outlet on a geography trip. Year 10 are looking towards the future and enjoyed visiting the Careers Wales ‘What’s Next?’ event where they experienced a taster of different college course and careers. We work closely with our specialist careers advisor to prepare our pupils for the next stage of their education. The Year 11 class are working hard towards a range of qualifications and have recently sat exams in maths and English. They are looking forward to celebrating their successes at the prom at the end of the year.

MATHEMATICS

The year 2014 – 2015 proved to be another successful year at Pencoed Mathematics Department. The teachers continued to show their commitment to making the department a centre of excellence in the facilitation of mathematics and numerical learning. This year saw success in examinations at all levels due to the dedication and hard work of our pupils, supported by the teaching and support staff in the mathematics team.

At GCSE level, the A* to C pass rate remained high at 63%. Twenty pupils attained an A* or A grade. Some of these pupils were entered for an Additional Mathematics GCSE, which prepared them well for their future A Level studies. All mainstream Year 10 pupils were given the opportunity to sit the Mathematics GCSE a year early, achieving some excellent results including 7 A* and 11 A grades.

At A level 14% of pupils achieved A*/A grades and all the pupils who took the full A level passed. Twenty pupils elected to study Maths at AS Level realising

the benefits that an AS or A level in Mathematics gave, when applying to University courses. The department continued to offer Further Mathematics A level to pupils. At KS 3 pupils continued to achieve high levels after starting the GCSE course early.

We also welcomed a new member of staff Mr S. Gifford to the department in September 2015.Techniquest visited the department to work with Key Stage 3 pupils on ‘real life’ problems. And some Key Stage 4 pupils attended the University of Glamorgan Mathematics Masterclasses on Saturday mornings.

The department has continued to forge strong links with the Mathematics Department at Swansea and Cardiff Universities, together with Porthcawl, Bryntirion and Brynteg Comprehensive Schools.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

On the 26th September we celebrated the European Day of Languages with a variety of events such as a French breakfast and a poster competition. The European Day of Languages is always well supported by staff and pupils and we would like to thank them for making it such a great success. Once again in June, the MFL department held a ‘MFL’ day for year 7 pupils as part of the Learning Core programme of events. The aim of the day was for pupils to understand the importance of languages and to foster positive attitudes towards other cultures. The day was a great success and pupils thoroughly enjoyed having taster sessions in Japanese, Italian and German.

Page 25: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

We also welcomed a new member of staff, Mrs S. Davies who teaches French and Spanish to mainly Key stage 3 and some Key stage 4 classes. Representatives from CILT CYMRU (now Routes into Languages) were invited into the department to discuss and inform year 9 pupils about the benefits of learning a modern foreign language for the future prosperity of business in Wales and the advantages of choosing a modern foreign language for future job prospects. Pupils had the opportunity to watch video clips of people from business and industry highlighting the importance of learning a language and hearing from celebrities such as Gareth Bale, Huw Edwards ( BBC news reader) and Gary Lineker talking about how learning a language has benefited their careers.

MUSIC

The department continues to achieve very good standards at KS3 and GCSE. These results are down to the sheer hard work and dedication of the pupils and staff, supported by exciting schemes of learning, featuring the latest chart hits, as well as more traditional classics. Pupils have focused on developing independent learning skills, working with iPads, Macs as well as more traditional forms of music-making. Carol Service 2015 The Carol Service was very well attended by parents and members of the local community. We welcomed back past pupil, Lloyd Coleman, who delighted us with his rendition of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. Readers, vocalists, instrumentalists and groups entertained, whilst maintaining the tradition of Christmas. Extra-curricular activities include choir and orchestra, as well as keyboard club for those looking to improve their skills. We currently provide instrumental lessons in violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, tenor horn, guitar and percussion. There has been a great deal of interest in playing an instrument this year, particularly with Year 7. We are hoping to continue to see this enthusiasm by developing closer instrumental links with our cluster primary schools. They have been invited to join our orchestra in the school concert (next week) and will be performing King Tut’s Strut.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

The department continues to make progress and is making very good use of its facilities. Indeed, we are a very well equipped Physical Education Department, which allows us to deliver a broad, exciting curriculum to all pupils at Pencoed. We are pleased to announce that a new multi purpose Astroturf will be laid in the Spring. In addition to this, the red yard will also be given an all weather surface, which is a great investment by the Local Authority. We run an extensive extra curricular club system, during which activities ranging from gymnastics to dance are covered. The department fosters a positive healthy attitude towards physical education and all its benefits, which has been a massive challenge in light of the recent curriculum and staff reductions.

Page 27: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

Mr Dean Ronan has continued in his role as WRU Hub Officer, a clear indication of the department’s commitment to Physical Education. He has been a very valuable addition to the school and his work with all pupils has been extremely beneficial. He has also built up excellent working relationships with all our feeder schools, local clubs and the various governing bodies. This positive initiative is a clear indication of what can be achieved through collaboration and must continue into the future. He was recently appointed Set Piece Coach for the Senior Welsh Women’s Rugby Team and recently brought in three current squad members to work with girls from a number of Bridgend Schools.

As a school, we still have a large number of pupils gaining district, county and international honours in numerous activities, something that will be more than evident when the awards are made this evening. In the near future, it is hoped that we will be able to take a boys sports team on a major tour. The trip will be open to current Year 9, 10, 11 pupils. The trip will be open to parents and all interested parties. Please contact Mr S.King / Mr I.Poley / Mr D.Ronan for details.

Page 28: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

The 5 x 60 initiative continues, which gives definite value added support to the pupils and staff. Pupil voice alongside departmental requests has been used to form a timetable of varied extracurricular activities for all pupils. The department is also thankful to members of staff who gave freely of their time and also support sport at Pencoed – Mr R Thornton & Mr John Rees. In a new initiative, Key Stage 3 Year Groups have spent one of their learning core days with the department, looking at healthy, active lifestyles. Although taught primarily through practical lessons, the pupils learnt about heart rate measurement, healthy eating, exercise intensity and being active. The sessions have also allowed the department to deliver some of the literacy and numeracy assessments that are now a national requirement. On the competitive side, numerous school teams have proven themselves to be more than competitive within the borough. District representation has again been very high in a number of sports. In rugby union, two pupils have been selected for the Ospreys East U16 Squad, whilst four Year 10 pupils were chosen for Bridgend & District Dewar Shield U15 squad. For the first time in a number of years, the school fielded a Senior Rugby XV. They finished 4th in the Ospreys East League and reached the last 32 of the Welsh Cup. The U16s won the Ospreys East League and were runners up in the Ospreys League. At U14, we

Page 29: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

were Ospreys East runners up. It is pleasing to report that last Year’s U16 captain Tommy Reffell signed for the Leicester Tigers Academy over the Summer and is doing exceptionally well both on the field and in the classroom. He is an excellent ambassador for the school. We have built up strong links with our community and visitors are encouraged into the department to use our facilities and improve our pupils’ knowledge of opportunities outside school. As already mentioned, Welsh Women’s Rugby Internationals Gemma Rowlands, Sian Williams and Bethan Dainton have visited school and earlier in the year, Ospreys and Wales hooker Scott Baldwin passed on some of his expertise. Other visits/trips have included:-

• Celtic Dragons Netball Matches • Disability Sport Wales All Inclusive Basketball • Personal Trainer/Physios into A Level lessons. • Aerobics instructors • Welsh Rugby League Technical Staff • Dance Groups • Rhys Long – WRU / British Lion Analyst • Dolygaer Outdoor Pursuits Centre • International Sporting Events • The Welsh Institute of Sport, Sophia Gardens • The University of Wales, Institute Cardiff (UWIC) • Techniquest Science in Sport Exhibition • Pencoed College Climbing wall. • Local sports facilities / Outdoor Education

Swansea City FC have again linked in with the department and invited 10 players to represent the club in the Truce Tournament in Ypres, Belgium along with three other Premier League clubs and other European teams. Unfortunately, due to the unfortunate events in Paris, the tournament was postponed, but the hope is that Pencoed will still be able to take part in this fantastic opportunity in the near future.

Departmental members attend training courses which have helped improve units/schemes of work and delivery of National Curriculum, A Level and GCSE PE. S. King attended a WJEC A-Level course and as a result, two chief examiners

Page 30: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

visited the school and delivered to our pupils and other PE specialists from within the borough. All of the PE staff have attended PGCE Student Teacher Mentor Training at Cardiff Metropolitan University. The recently released Donaldson Report on Welsh Education highlights Health and Well Being as one of six areas of learning and experience that pupils should undertake. The Sport’s Council for Wales believe that this focus will allow for the national roll out of a Physical Literacy Programme that would see it sit alongside the current Literacy and Numeracy Framework. This focus will have a huge positive impact on the department and its pupils. The WRU in conjunction with Swansea University have looked to build pupils’ physical literacy by placing two sports science students with us for the rest of the year. Emily Stock and ex pupil Kamal Phillips will be working with our pupils on developing their movement skills, posture and level of conditioning, regardless of whether they play sport regularly or not. The department has just welcomed two ITET student teacher from Cardiff Met University. Pencoed has a fine tradition of mentoring Physical Education student teachers and we are seen as an exemplar school for that role. They will hopefully follow in the illustrious footsteps of some famous ex students including a certain Mr. I. Poley, whose lesson plans are still legendary. Primary schools are invited to the school to watch gym & dance displays on open days. These pupils also use our facilities during a junior gymnastics club where a number of pupils help instruct. Hopefully, the department will be able to assist with transition activities in the future, by involving our feeder primary schools in sporting competitions. Mr. Ronan spends time developing rugby skills in our feeder primary schools and this has already proven to be a great success. Sport is probably one of the most popular activities available to our prospective pupils and our ability to encourage participation whilst creating a positive, healthy approach towards taking part should be developed via these links. Both the Winter and Summer Sports Day have become important dates in the House Competition calendar and provide a competitive, yet friendly

Page 31: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

environment for the pupils to challenge each other. The Winter Sports took place just before Christmas with the four houses battling it out in basketball and handball. Llywelyn won the trophy after all year groups had completed their respective matches. Year 12 & 13 students played an important role officiating the matches and nurturing the house system throughout the day. At the end of the last academic year, Summer Sports day included athletics, tug of war and football, with Llywelyn taking the title for the third consecutive year. It is now the Schools intention to roll out two more Activity / Sports days for our pupils. These will further enhance our thriving House rivalry whilst encouraging our pupils to participate and compete with their peers. The vertical structure is never more effective or evident than it is on sports days when players, coaches, officials and supporters from across the age, ability and gender range come together. These days are fun, competitive and most importantly active. They link in to what we want to achieve and encourage a great sense of togetherness – something only sport can do. Parents should attend, if available, to enjoy the tremendous skill, commitment and sheer hard work our pupils display. The potential all round benefits are enormous for the whole community. The department’s Twitter account grew in popularity with the number of followers hitting close to six hundred. Fixtures, team selections, news and results are regularly updated. Please follow @PencoedPE From an academic viewpoint, the Year 11 GCSE results were again excellent with 75% of the cohort achieving A*- C grades. 100% of examination students passed their course work. At A/S and A2 level, pupils again performed well with the majority reaching their potential grade. 75% of our A2 students gained A*-C grades and all went on to Further Education. They did extremely well and bring a great feeling of pride to the department. They will go on to achieve success in their future careers carrying the name of Pencoed School with them.

Page 32: ANNUAL Prize Evening Ceremony 2016SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD The Christmas card design for 2015 was produced by Jessica Phillips who is currently in Year 11 doing GCSE Art. Jessica painted

It is hoped that these results will be repeated, if not bettered this summer. Physical Education is very popular in school and provides children with all the necessary core values to make a success of their time at Pencoed. Through the hard work and dedication of the department, the PE curriculum will enhance our pupils’ quality of learning and produce healthy, happy students who maximize their potential in both the practical and theoretical elements of the subject.

“A healthy child is a happy child”

RE DEPARTMENT The department continues to achieve high standards as a result of its policies on teaching and learning. Pupils at Key Stage 3 are introduced to a variety of religious traditions and beliefs, and the end of KS3 teacher assessments show that our pupils continue to achieve standards which are above the County average. Pupils in year 11 follow either a full or a short course to GCSE level. The short course allows us to meet statutory requirements for the delivery of Religious Education. We also offer a full course qualification to the very able pupils within the year group. The decision to form this group was made as a response to the department’s wish to offer greater challenge to our more able pupils. Results from the ‘Fast Track’ group are always excellent, and far exceed the County and national average on an annual basis. For the first time this year all pupils in year 10 will be entered for a full course qualification. The RE department are very excited about this and are very pleased with the attitude and enthusiasm showed by our current year 10 pupils. All mainstream pupils will sit one external examination in May and another at the end of year 11. The RE department were extremely pleased with the AS and A level results in August. In both AS and A2 all pupils achieved a C grade or above. For AS in particular all pupils exceeded their predicted targets. Our KS5 students have also participated in a number of extra curricular activities this year. As part of the AS course Lynne Jones guided year 12 students in a meditation activity and taught pupils meditation techniques from the time of the Buddha. The class also plan to visit the Cardiff Buddhist centre to further develop their knowledge and

understanding of the religion. In December twenty pupils from years 12 and 13 visited the Cardiff United Synagogue to visit the place of worship and to speak to the Rabbi. Pupils had the opportunity to develop their understanding of the value and importance of the Synagogue to Judaism through a tour of the building. The department has continued to plan and deliver active and engaging lessons for pupils. We have introduced a number of new activities this year to help develop and support pupils literacy skills. We have embedded a number of reading strategies into year 7-9 SOL and pupils have had a number of opportunities to develop their extended writing. The department has continued to develop links with other departments in the school. As part of the Learning Core programme year 7 had the opportunity to create a ‘multi faith room’ as part of multi faith week. In January the History and RE department led assemblies to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. Two students from year 12:- Emily Morgan and Rhiannon Evans also visited Auschwitz as part of the lessons from Auschwitz project. They participated in seminars where they learnt about pre-war Jewish life and heard from testimony from Holocaust survivors. They also visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum. Both were very moved by the experiences and will be visiting other year groups in order to share their experiences.

SCIENCE

The department celebrated record breaking GCSE results last summer. 97% of year 11 pupils gained A* - C grades placing the department high up in our ‘Family of Schools’!

Year 9 MAT pupils attended a STEM project day during the autumn term. This saw them apply scientific reasoning skills in different contexts. This was an excellent opportunity with which pupils fully engaged and was enjoyed by all.

Year 10 pupils are currently taking part in an extracurricular science project leading to the bronze CREST award. This involves independent learning and team work.

BIOLOGY

The Biology department will maintain its partnership with Cardiff University School of Biosciences this year.

Yr. 13 Biology students have visited the School of Biomedical Sciences. They were given a tour of the department and were involved in ‘hands on’ experiences using state of the art equipment. It is hoped that Yr. 12 students will be visiting the university this year.

The Biology dept. will again borrow equipment from The University of Wales in order to give our students experience of the technology involved in DNA analysis.

CHEMISTRY

Congratulations to all the students who passed A Level Chemistry last summer – another pleasing set of results.

APPLIED SCIENCE

An excellent set of results was obtained by A2 students last year, including A and B grades. Applied Science continues to be a popular subject at A level. Due to curriculum changes, Applied Science will be replaced by a level 3 Environmental Science course from Sept. 16.

PHYSICS

Congratulations to all of the students who passed A level Physics last year.

YR ADRAN GYMRAEG Ysgol Pencoed School

The Department has made consistent progress again this year and has seen many good developments and achievements by the students. The teaching and learning within the department has continued to develop very well this year, with excellent progress being made. Examination Results 2015

The Department achieved excellent results again this year. GCSE A*-C grades in 2015 were 91%, continuing the excellent external results achieved by the department and are again consistently higher than the school average and are one the highest full course 2nd Language results in the borough. Our GCSE results were significantly better than the Wales model and the UA model. This year we have 11 students studying in Year 12/13. Again, this number is significantly higher than the majority of schools in the borough. This success is undoubtedly due to the hard work and dedication of the pupils and staff in the department. The department has continued to see links with Cardiff University and UWIC. The department has continued to welcome visits from staff in other Welsh Departments in the borough and has again shared good practice in teaching and learning in the classroom. Mrs. R. Roberts has continued to be involved in the preparation for the new GCSE Welsh 2nd Language Full Course this year and has again been involved in the preparation of the controlled assessment materials used within the course. Mrs. R. Roberts continues to be a member of the Bridgend Welsh Education Partnership, participating in discussions and developments of the continuing Welsh Language Scheme for the borough. Mrs Kate Cowell has continued to work very closely with the cluster primary schools and continues to co-ordinate the KS2/3 Welsh Transition Project. This project continues to be successful in raising standards. The KS2/3 cluster portfolio project, accredited by WJEC, continues to be a focus with the cluster primary schools and the department. Mrs Kate Cowell is also the Literacy Co-ordinator for the school.

KS5 - AS A-C = 100% KS5 – A2 A-C = 100% The department held 2 very successful Eisteddfodau again this year, which took place over 2 days. Many pupils took part, including pupils with additional learning needs, in a range of written and stage competitions. The Eisteddfod successfully fosters excellent cross curricular departmental links and contributes to the Welsh Dimension within school. The school is the only school in the borough to hold 2 Eisteddfodau, which is a credit to the pupils and staff of the school.

Extra Curricular Activities

The department has encouraged pupils to take part in extra curricular activities in the language again this year, helping to promote enjoyment, communication and participation.

The Department has welcomed Rebecca Morgan, a past student of the school, who, at present, is in her final year at Swansea University. She has been helping A Level students prepare for their speaking exam in April. We thank Rebecca for her work with our students.

• In November Year 12/13 visited the Pavilion in Porthcawl to see a Welsh Language production, which contributed to their study of Welsh drama in the AS/A Level course.

• In January Year 12/13 visited Cardiff University for a day in the Welsh Department, where pupils had the opportunity to take part in revision sessions for AS / A Level exams.

The Department has continued with their participation in Urdd Gobaith Cymru and hopes to continue increasing pupil participation in the Urdd throughout 2015-16.

The Welsh Department has enjoyed a successful year and would like to congratulate all pupils who have achieved in the language this year and thank all for their hard work and dedication.
