PART – A:

What is the plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the

beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and what is the

outcome by the end of the year?

PLAN OF ACTION CHALKED OUT IN THE BEGINNING OF

THE YEAR 2006-07 TOWARDS QUALITY ENHANCEMENT

For the year 2006-07 IQAR’s plan of action included:

a) Efforts were made to improve on the suggestions given by the

NAAC Peer Team.

b) At the College level certain activities were undertaken aimed at

further quality enhancement. These included:

1) Planning for setting up of postgraduate and research

centers in the Departments which have received the

approvals for the same.

2) Various academic programmes were planned for the

teaching faculties.

3) A workshop to improve the productivity and method of

functioning was planned for the non-teaching staff.

4) Planning for various curricular, co-curricular and extra-

curricular activities for the students.

5) Improvements in Library services were planned.

6) Renovation of basketball court and volleyball court etc.

were planned.

7) Making scholarship available from UGC for the PG

studies of single girl child.

OUTCOME BY THE END OF THE YEAR

1) Setting up of M.Phil. research center in the Department of

Marathi.

During the year 2006-2007, the Department of Marathi

started its research center and 21 students have enrolled for the

first batch of M.Phil. in Marathi.

2) Setting up of research center in the Department of Geography.

During the current year the Department of Geography started its

research center.

3) Approval for Major/Minor research projects: -

The Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi

has approved and sanctioned a grant of Rs. 40 lakhs to the P.G.

Department of Chemistry under the scheme ‘Funds for

Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure’ (FIST).

With this, currently three departments, i.e. Physics, Zoology and

Chemistry, have funds sanctioned under FIST, a total of Rs. 84

lakhs. Out of this, Rs. 15 lakhs, Rs. 15.4 lakhs and Rs. 26.75

lakhs were received by the Physics, Zoology and Chemistry

departments respectively during the current year.

In addition to this, ten minor research projects were

sanctioned by the UGC. Further, seven minor research projects

were approved and sanctioned by University of Pune, Pune.

4) New Courses started during the academic year: -

The new course added to the academic programme of the

college this year was M.A. in Sociology. The response to this

new course has been very encouraging.

It is expected that the above steps taken will help in the quality

enhancement in the college.

PART – B:

1. Activities reflecting the goal and objectives of the institution:

Some of the activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the

institution include: -

a) Research work in the College: -

The College believes that core research in an important step

towards quality in Education. The College currently has 19

Ph.D. and M.Phil guides, 63 students have registered for

Ph.D. and 26 for M.Phil. This is in addition to the 21

students registered for M.Phil. course in Marathi. Two

students from Zoology department and one from Physics

department have completed their respective research work at

Ahmednagar College. In all eight students have completed

their doctorate degree and seven have completed their M.Phil.

Degree during the year.

b) Introduction of new courses: -

Considering the current needs of the students and the local

community, new courses like M.A. Sociology and M.Phil.

Marathi have been introduced. Ahmednagar College is the

only college in Ahmednagar district to offer PG course in

Sociology.

c) Hostel facilities: -

An additional wing for the girls hostel was completed and

about 30 girl students were given admission for the same.

d) Other activities: -

The inclusive admission policy of the College encourages

girls, minorities, and out of state students to join our

institution. During the year the College gave admission to

about 879 students from the minority communities which was

about 23% of the total enrolment. Out of the total enrolment

about 1381 were girls which is approximately 36%. About ---

---- out-of-state students were given admission.

The College also made scholarship available to about 1605

needy students. These scholarships are in various categories.

2. New academic programmes initiated (UG & PG)

The College has introduced the following courses during the academic

year 2006-07:

a) M.A. in Sociology.

b) Ph.D. and M.Phil in Marathi.

c) Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Geography.

d) Certificate course in Women’s Studies.

In addition to this the following new academic programmes were

initiated: -

a) Physics: -

Three departmental courses were introduced at PG level

namely Instrumentation, Micro-controller and

Atmospheric Physics.

b) Hindi: -

A course in ‘Prayojanmulak’ Hindi has been started for

the MA I.

c) Statistics: A new option in Ecology is being offered at

T.Y.B.Sc.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction: -

a) Zoology: -

Internet facility for research and references to students and

teachers.

b) Botany: -

i. Graphical representation for advanced studies at M.Sc.

ii. Electronic flora compilation (e-flora) and e-herbaria.

c) Microbiology: -

New syllabus introduced at T.Y.B.Sc. and M.Sc.

d) Psychology -

New syllabus introduced at T.Y.B.A.

e) Physics: -

New experiments designed for UG and PG courses.

4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started: -

a) Department of Physics – Contributory teaching at B.Sc.

Biotech courses.

b) Department of Micro-Biology: Contributory teaching at

B.Sc. Biotech courses and Drug Chemistry courses.

c) Department of Zoology: Collaboration with the

Department of Physics for the designing and fabrication of

equipments for Circadian physiology. In addition,

collaboration with the Department of Statistics.

d) Department of Botany: Programme for Aero-biology and

Aerosol in collaboration with the Department of Physics.

e) Department of Sociology: A certificate course in

Women’s Studies in collaboration with the Women’s

Studies Cell of the University of Pune.

5. Examination reforms implemented: -

In continuation of the new examination system, this year

at T.Y.B.A. and T.Y.B.Com. level a term end examination of 20

marks was conducted and the final examination will be of 80

marks conducted by the University of Pune.

for DST and CSIR, New Delhi.

5. Three papers submitted to Chronobiology international and

Biol. Rhythm Research were sent to Dr. Joshi for reviewing.

6. Two candidates have joined laboratory to do Ph.D. namely:

Ms. Sunita Ranbhise and Mr. S.S. Hakim.

7. Dr. Joshi was a resource person in DST funded Workshop

on Chronobiology at Meerut University, meerut in February

2007. He delivered five lectures and conducted three lab

courses.

8. Mr. S.S. Hakim and Ms. M. Vihalkar attended a workshop

on Chronobiology at meerut University, Meerut in Febreuary

2007.

a) Principal Dr. R.J. Barnabas received many prestigious

awards including Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award, Jewel

of India Award, New Delhi, Akhil Bharatiya Pratibha

Award, New Delhi.

b) Zoology Department: - Dr. Dilip Joshi received the Best

Teacher Award from University of Pune.

c) Hindi Department: - Dr. R.R. Sharma was conferred with

the ‘Bolt Award’ given by Air India.

d) Physics Department: -

Prof. S.B. Iyyer, Prof. S.A. Sayyed and Mr. Kedare

Hemant received ‘Best Paper Award’ at National

Conference on Instrumentation held at Gwalior.

e) Department of Marathi: Dr. C.V. Joshi received the

‘Anant Phandi Award’ for Lavni 2006-07.

f) Department of Commerce: Dr. M.B. Mehta was

nominated on the Research and Recognition Committee of

the University of Pune.

g) Prof. A.T. Pokale, Department of Chemistry continues to

be a Member of Academic Council of University of Pune,

Pune.

The Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi,

has approved and sanctioned Rs. 40 lakhs under the Scheme

Actual Funds received during the year from DST – FIST

17. Community services: -

A Blood Donation camp was organized by the NCC unit

of the College in which about 45 cadets donated blood.

Twenty cadets from the NCC wing and ten from NSS

assisted the Police force of the Ahmednagar city in maintaining

law and order during the Ganesh Festival.

NSS unit of the College organized a ‘Sadbhavana

Saptaha’ with the co-operation of Zilla Parishad, Ahmednagar.

The improvements in the library services during the year

of digitization.

b) Two new terminals of computers set up at issuing counter

for speedy data feeding and retrieval.

c) Photo exhibitions was organized in the library to mark the

Diamond Jubilee of the College.

d) Common drinking water tank facility was built in the

Library premises.

f) A collection of the books and research reports of the major

and minor researches carried out by the College staff has

been set up.

22. Number of courses for which student assessment of teachers is

introduced and the action taken on student feedback: -

For all courses in UG and PG the Academic Council

Committee of the College carried out students’ assessment of

teachers. This exercise was conducted in an objective manner

using criteria that are both quantifiable and verifiable. The

teachers concerned were also informed of the necessary

improvements required in their functioning.

24. Computerization of administration and the process of admission

and examination results, issue of certificate: -

The admission process has been made online from this

academic year. A special software has been installed to

streamline the admission process. As part of this process each

student has been assigned a permanent registration number by

the College.

b) Three additional classrooms.

c) Three additional laboratories.

d) Additional ‘Drinking water facility’.

27. Computer and internet access and training to teachers and

students: -

Broadband connectivity has been provided to Physics and

Computer Science departments. This facility is made available to

the faculty members of these departments as well as other faculty

members.

The College has a separate Scholarship section. Various

financial aid is given to the students through the different

government schemes. This includes: -

29. Activities and support from the Alumni Association: -

The Alumni Association helped the College in organizing

various activities which were part of the Diamond Jubilee

Celebrations of the College. Prominent alumni were invited and

felicitated as part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

30. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association: -

During the year the Parent–Teacher Association also

helped out in planning and organizing the various activities

which were part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. The

Association was specially helpful in organizing the cultural

programmes.

31. Health Services: -

The Medical examination of all the hostel students (both

boys and girls) was conducted at the beginning of the

academic year. The College has tie-ups with the nearby

hospitals in Ahmednagar.

Awareness programmes regarding Health & Hygiene,

AIDS/HIV, importance of blood donation etc. were

conducted for the benefit of the students.

32. Performance in sports activities: -

Students were selected to participate in different games at the group

35. Activities of the Guidance and Counselling cell: -

The Career Guidance & Counselling Cell conducted

various courses for the benefit of the students. This included

short term courses during the vacations and a long-term course

conducted during the year. In fact, our college has send the

details of this to NAAC under the ‘Best Practices’ followed by

the College.

36. Placement services provided to students: -

The Drug Chemistry, Biochemistry and Organic

Chemistry departments arranged campus interviews for the

students. In all 31 students were placed through the placement

services in prominent companies. This includes:

M.Sc. Drug Chemistry 14 students

M.Sc. Biochemistry 05 students

M.Sc. Organic Chemistry 12 students

M.Sc./ B.Sc. Computer Science 24 students

37. Development programme for non-teaching staff: -

On Saturday 16th December 2006 a one-day programme for

the non teaching staff was organized in which talks on motivation

and productivity were delivered. The programme also had various

cultural and variety programme presented by the non-teaching staff.

38. Any other relevant information the College wishes to add: -

1. The College celebrated the Founder’s Day on 22nd January 2007

with two unique programmes: the first was a drama depicting the

origins of the College and the second was a recitation of poems

on the life and spirit of the Founder Dr. B.P. Hivale, presented by

the students and the staff members of the College.

2. The College Annual Day had Dr. Girish Oak, a famous actor, as

the Chief Guest.

3. The concluding ceremony of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

of the College had as its Chief Guest Dr. Narendra Jadhav, Vice

Chancellor, University of Pune and Shri Yashvantrao Gadakh,

MP.

4. ‘Soaring Fire’, a Rock Group with six of our students, bagged

the first prize at a Rock Music Competition organized by Armed

Forces Medical College, Pune.

5. The Department of Mathematics conducted a Certificate course

in ‘Advanced C ++’ from 20th November 2006 to 20 February

2007. Thirty students from various colleges of Ahmednagar were

trained in this course.

6. The non-teaching staff of the College had organized a Musical

Programme on 16th December 2006.

7. The NSS unit of the College arranged a ten-day residential camp

at the village Pimpalgaon Malvi between 14th and 23rd December

2006. Various activities, including economic survey, labor work,

were carried out during this camp.

8. The Department of Geography organized a one-day seminar on

remote sensing and geographical information on 13th February

2007. Eminent Professors from the University of Pune were the

resource persons.

9. A ‘Youth Week’ was celebrated in January 2007 by the NSS

students wherein different co-curricular activities like debate,

elocution and essay writing competitions were held.

10. The College unit of NCC conducted a Drill Competition on 14th

January 2007. Contestants from 17th Maharashtra Battalion took

part in the competition.

11. A two-day ‘Arts Festival’ was organized on 11th and 12th of

March 2007 for the UG students of the arts faculty.

12. A photo exhibition displaying 31 photos illustrating the

landscape of Bhandardhara dam and the Adivasi life in the

surrounding areas was organized on 15th March 2007. The

photographer Mr. Yogesh Kardile is a past student of the

College.

Explain the plans of the College for the next year (2007-

2008):

The plans of the College for the next year include the following:

1. Introduction of new courses:

The College intends to start the following new courses at the

graduate and postgraduate level.

Under Graduate Level :

a) Diploma in Hindi Translation (approval

committee is expected).

b) Certificate Course in English (approval

committee is expected).

c) C training programme (in addition to C ++

already started).

d) Bachelor in Communication Journalism

e) Diploma in Communication Journalism

2. Follow up on Research Centres: -

Follow up and get the permission from University of Pune

to start research centre in Commerce.

3. Infrastructure Development:

The College intends to add the following infrastructure in

the next year:

a) Four classrooms

b) A new staff room

c) Two labs for organic chemistry

d) Two rooms for YCMOU

4. Library:

a) Completion of the computerization of library and

moving towards ‘e’ library.

b) Subscribing additional research journals in

various subjects.

5. Instrumentation facility: Setting up advanced instrumentation

facility in the department of Physics.

6. Grants under FIST: Re-apply for grants under FIST (Funds for

Improvement of Science and Technology) for Microbiology and

apply for grants for Geography and Botany departments. Grants

under FIST have already been sanctioned for Physics, Chemistry

and Zoology departments.

7. Follow up on proposals to: UGC, for a ladies hostel with 50 plus

rooms with modern amenities.

8. Computer Network Centers: In Biochemistry, Biotechnology,

Mathematics and Statistics departments.

9. Office Automation: Fine tuning of office automation for fully

online admissions procedure.

10. College Website: Improvements in the websites with special link

up for alumni online registration.

11. Renovation and Upgradation:

a. Renovation of Ladies common room.

b. Renovation of Gents Common room.

c. Further upgradation of Gymkhana.
