It’s been said that your legacy can be measured by how many hearts you touch.

Probably most of us wonder, at some point, what kind of mark we will make upon this earth.

The Community Foundation is the local alliance of folk who make a mark on the Outer Banks, touch hearts, and leave a legacy of good.

The givers who work with the Outer Banks Community Foundation have different interests, different passions, and different stories. Some folks utilize us to support a specific charity, whether that be the school or church down the street, a beloved nonprofit, or a favorite park or historic site.

Some folks utilize us for our scholarship expertise, creating a perpetual source of support benefiting generations of students on their journeys to college. Others just want to help the Outer Banks in general with a forever gift for the community.

It is our honor at the Outer Banks Community Foundation to connect all of these people who care with the causes that matter to them. We ensure that their legacies are honored, stewarded, and do the most good.

On the following pages, we have enumerated all of the gifts to and from the Community Foundation in 2018. Please don’t be fooled by the simple listing of names and dollars. Each one of these grants, scholarships, and donations represent a heart touched, a legacy left, an indelible mark made.

There’s the new scholarship in the name of a beloved teacher and coach at First Flight Middle School, who will always be remembered for living his life with courage and determination. There’s the grant from the late Pauline Wright to Special Olympics for new uniforms and equipment.

There’s a new fund to help local veterans, in memory of a brave soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice to our country. And there’s the musician on our cover, who, like 73 other art students before him, is going to college thanks to an amazing bequest from the late Dorothy Luedemann. These stories are shared in brief on the following pages, and you can read even more on our website: www.obcf.org.

So what mark will you make? What hearts will you touch? We invite you to call us at the Outer Banks Community Foundation to help you plan your legacy of giving.

sustainable, easy funds for whatever their needs might be.

Through our Scholarship Program, the Community Foundation has helped 1,500 local students pursue their dream of a college education. The Community Foundation is the largest and most diverse scholarship provider in our area, awarding both need-based and merit-based

The Outer Banks Community Foundation is a public charity that connects people who care with causes that matter. Founded in 1982, the Community Foundation helps donors meet local charitable needs in Dare County and across the Outer Banks, from Corolla to Ocracoke, by targeting grants and scholarships toward our community’s most pressing needs and promising opportunities.

The Community Foundation manages a collection of undesignated charitable funds, grant-making funds, nonprofit endowments, and scholarship funds, created by different donors at different times for different purposes. Donors may create funds during their lifetime or by bequest, for general charitable purposes or for a particular cause or organization that they specify. The Community Foundation provides tailored services to help individuals, families, businesses, and other groups pursue their charitable goals easily, effectively, and with maximum tax benefit.

Through our Community Enrichment Grants Program, the Community Foundation is the venture capitalist of our local charitable sector, supporting the Outer Banks’s most exciting and most urgent charitable projects. The Community Foundation is a catalyst, helping the nonprofit sector evolve to take on new challenges and opportunities as they arise. The Community Foundation also manages designated endowments on behalf of nonprofits, providing those groups with

Emeritus directors

scholarships to the future leaders of our country.

The Community Foundation’s perpetual endowments are a resource for today and tomorrow. With the Outer Banks Community Foundation, people who love the Outer Banks can give back to the community they love to help meet today’s pressing needs, while building a source of support for future generations.

About the Community Foundation

In 2018 the Community Foundation awarded a grant of $1,000 to Hatteras Island Wildlife Rehabilitation (HIWR) for a critical care unit to care for birds of prey, like the peregrine falcon pictured above. “The direct support from grants is wonderful, but the ongoing educational opportunities for how to raise money and how to better manage a nonprofit is extremely valuable,” said Lou Browning, Executive Director of HIWR.” (Photo courtesy of Lou Browning.)

Dorothy Luedemann spent a lifetime creating art and giving back to the community. That spirit of creativity and generosity continues today through a gift she made more than twenty years ago—a gift that continues to make its mark.

Thanks to that gift, Dorothy’s vision, of art in all of its many forms is still affecting lives.

When Dorothy imagined the students her gift could help, Enrique Babilonia would have been part of that vision.

Enrique plays trumpet. As a student at Cape Hatteras Secondary School, he began seeking ways to expand what he was doing musically, teaming up with Manteo High School trumpeter Eric Williams to create a regional jazz band.

“We collectively put together a group called the Eastern North Carolina Jazz Orchestra,” he explained. ”We put together what we thought were interested and passionate musicians from the area, and we played at the Charlotte Jazz Festival… Doing stuff like that, people took notice and thought, ‘Wow, he’s really serious about these things.’”

It was his skill on his trumpet and his determination to challenge himself musically that earned Enrique the 2018 Charles H. and Dorothy S. Luedemann Art Scholarship through the Outer Banks Community Foundation.

For Enrique, Dorothy’s gift means his dreams of a career in music are that much closer to coming true. He knows it will take hard work, dedication, and the support of family and community to succeed, but the four-year scholarship means more than just the money.

“It felt good to know that not only was my family supporting me, but members around the community, they were willing to see my future and see my image,” he said.

For Enrique, who is now enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, the scholarship represented more than the community support for him; it also relieved some of the pressure of attending an expensive school.

Creating a ViSion of the Future“It was good to know that with the scholarship I had some sort of financial security,” he said.

Dorothy’s gift is more than a scholarship fund; it also supports art programs across the Outer Banks. When the Grammy-winning a cappella choir Chanticleer came to town in 2013, it was Dorothy Luedemann who helped the Outer Banks Forum bring the ensemble to Dare County Schools for master classes

and performances.

Dorothy’s gift has purchased lights and audio equipment for the Lost Colony, helped launch the Veterans Writing Program through the Dare County Arts Council, bolstered local performers through the Outer Banks Chorus and Theatre of Dare, purchased violins for elementary school kids through the Dare County Youth String Ensemble, and many other projects.

What was this gift that has made such a mark? It was a gift through her will, a bequest to the Community Foundation of Dorothy’s remarkable collection of rare prints and works of art.

Contained in the collection was a 1955 signed color wood cut by Seong Moy, one of the most influential artists of the time working in woodcuts. There were also original lithograph posters by Chagall, and serigraph art by Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Robert

Motherwell, and Roy Lichtenstein.

Her own works were also included. Although she had worked with a wide variety of media, on the Outer Banks she was primarily noted for her print-making and the maps she created of the area and of North Carolina historic locations. The maps were often hand-colored by Dorothy.

Once her collection sold, the Community Foundation had $357,000. Dorothy instructed that her gift be used in two ways: to help art students attend college, and to make grants to nonprofits supporting the arts.

In 1998, Ernest White was one of the first recipients of the Luedemann Art Scholarship. In an earlier interview, he reflected on what it meant to be awarded the scholarship, and his reflections are very similar to Enrique’s thoughts two decades later.

6

“It not only helped me financially with the cost of college; it also indicated that someone believed in me,” Ernest said.

The initial scholarship that Ernest received was $1,000 per year. Today the Luedemann Scholarship is $3,000 per year.

That growth is thanks to the Community Foundation’s investment strategy. Gifts like Dorothy’s are invested as perpetual endowments, so that just a portion of the fund is used in any given year for grants and scholarships, while the principal remains invested for growth over generations.

Since its inception, the Charles & Dorothy Luedemann Arts Fund has awarded over $215,000 in scholarships and $242,000 in grants. That’s $100,000 more than the original gift. Meanwhile, the endowment principal has grown to $525,000, while still giving out grants and scholarships each year.

The Outer Banks has been enriched by Dorothy Luedemann’s vision for the local community. Her gift is growing and affecting more lives every year, and if it was her dream to make her mark on the arts and the Outer Banks community, then it seems her dream truly is coming true.

With a 2018 grant from the Community Foundation, Ocracats was able to spay/neuter 49 feral cats living on Ocracoke. The grant also helped this all-volunteer organization pay for basic veterinary care for the cats, including rabies vaccinations, flea treatments, and worming applications. Grant Spotlight

The Community Foundation’s $10,000 grant to Elizabeth R & Company helped bring Verdi’s La Traviata to the Outer Banks stage. Never before had classic opera in all its glory come to the Outer Banks. Featuring Manteo native son Tshombe Selby as Alfredo, the male lead in the opera, the production included a live orchestra accompanying the performers. Originally scheduled for October, Hurricane Florence forced the performance to be rescheduled to January. (Photo by Kip Tabb.)

The Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research monitors and researches the dolphin population of the Outer Banks. Now, thanks to a $4,588 grant from the Community Foundation, surveys of the dolphins have doubled, more people know about the organization’s work, and educational panels have been installed at Jennette’s Pier. The grant also helped to bring back “Moe,” a long-time dolphin resident of Outer Banks waters until he stranded and died near Beaufort. His articulated skeleton is now part of the Jennette’s Pier display. (Photo courtesy of Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research.)

A new area created just for young explorers — the Discovery Cottage at the Elizabethan Gardens. Built to encourage and inspire young learners, the outdoor area helps children learn through play. Inside the Discovery Cottage, children will find seasonal programs exploring the life cycles of plants and bugs with hands-on activities, models, terrariums, and aquariums in a laboratory of learning. A $15,000 grant from the Community Foundation helped to create this magical children’s learning center. (Photo by Kip Tabb.)
