Dear Friends,

Changing lives. That is what NET is all about.

This past year, we have been celebrating NET’s 30th anniversary - thirty years of challenging young Catholics to love Christ and embrace the life of the Church. If you have been reading along these past few newsletters, you have a good idea from the comments of bishops, youth workers, team members and young people of how much impact the ministry of NET has. Lives are being changed. Thank you for the ways you have helped change lives. Whether you have served as a team member, hosted a team in your home, given a donation, arranged for a retreat, or prayed for our work, you have contributed to our success. You have helped change lives.

Recently, the new director of NET Ireland was here for a visit with his wife. They both commented that I looked younger than they had imagined. I thanked them for their kindness and commented that the “Netters” keep me young. Each year, I have the privilege of working with 120 faith-filled Catholic young adults. They change me! They strengthen my hope in God as I witness Him at work in their lives. Their zeal and sacrifice in service calls me to live my life generously. Their youthful desire to change the world keeps me optimistic. And isn’t that how God always seems to work? As we each do our part to help others grow in faith, we end up being changed ourselves.

Thank you for helping to change lives – mine included.

With my gratitude,

Mark BerchemFounder and Executive Director

the history of net’s logoWith Christ at the center, all things are possible.

This is the idea behind NET’s current logo, but it has not always looked the way it does today.

In 1981, the first NET team born out of the Catholic Youth Center (who referred to themselves as the “Blitz Team”) created a temporary logo consisting of two figures holding hands on the pages of an open Bible.

As NET Ministries transformed and grew to reach out to more than just Minnesota, the logo also transformed. This version of the logo lasted for many years, with a fixated point at St. Paul, Minnesota (the headquarters of NET Ministries) and rays extending outward to the rest of the country.

In 1998, it became clear that NET was in need of a logo that would communicate its energy, Christianity and professionalism. It needed to be easily recognized, simple, clean, timeless and suitable for reproduction on a variety of media.

The logo features seven rays extending from a slanted cross drawn with brush-like strokes. It is situated within a frame. As the cross is central to our faith as Christians and Catholics, it is the focal point of the logo. The rays that extend from the cross add an energetic and lively dimension. They extend outward to the four corners of the world, as does NET’s proclamation of the Gospel. The symbol is designed to communicate vitality, youthfulness and life.

The logo was developed after several months of work and consulting. It is an important part of NET’s efforts to make itself more widely known across the United States.

It was designed in-house by NET staff member Kenn Vondrack.

The NET cross has changed a few times over the years to incorporate milestone anniversaries but has remained true to its origin.

This year, NET Ministries celebrated our 30th anniversary of challenging young Catholics to love Christ and embrace the life of the Church. This exciting occasion gave us a chance to reflect on our history and focus on new opportunities before us.

While some things have changed and evolved over the years, our mission of proclaiming the Gospel has remained constant. With the support of so many friends and benefactors, NET has become one of the leading youth evangelization organizations in the United States and beyond. For that, we are deeply grateful.

Alumni and friends of NET Ministries spent the weekend of May 11-13, 2012 in joyful celebration of NET’s 30 years of ministry. That Friday night, alumni flocked to the NET Center in West St. Paul to dine on wine and cheese while catching up with old friends. Some stayed overnight in our dorm rooms while others stayed in nearby hotels.

Saturday brought a flurry of activity. Alumni, host families, benefactors, friends, family members, and the general public were invited to join us for our special 30th anniversary Mass and program at the Church of St. Joseph in West St. Paul, MN. The turnout was phenomenal - approximately 600 people joined us to celebrate the Eucharist

before celebrating NET’s 30 years. Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt, Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis, celebrated the Mass along with 11 priests (8 of whom were NET alumni), an alumnus deacon, and three alumni seminarians. Members of the NET DOXA praise and worship team led the congregation in prayerful music.

After the Mass, attendees viewed a video of the history of NET, watched as three of our alumni were honored for their exemplary service to the Church after their time with NET, and congratulated Mark Berchem, Founder and Executive Director of NET Ministries, on his leadership throughout the past 30 years. A cake reception followed, and later that evening, alumni and their families gathered at a campfire to visit and catch up.

Three Honored AlumniNET Ministries unveiled the reestablishment of an annual alumni award to recognize the ongoing efforts of our alumni to engage the Church’s mission of evangelization. The winners were chosen using the following criteria:

• Must have served a minimum of 7 years ago;• Must live an exemplary Catholic life;• Must demonstrate an ongoing involvement

in serving within the Church (professional or volunteer);

• Must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the mission of evangelization (evangelistic ministry; serving within the Church with an evangelistic fervor; supporting the advancement of NET’s mission through the use of time, talent, or treasure; etc).

At the celebration, we were pleased to announce the following alumni as winners of this award:

• JohnBeaulieu (NET alumnus 83-84, 86-87, Director of Youth and Young Adult Outreach at Franciscan University of Steubenville);

• Sr.M.ConsolataCrews (NET alumna 95-96, NET staff 96-98, Vocation Director for the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George);

• Gordy DeMarais (NET alumnus 82-83, Founder and Executive Director of Saint Paul’s Outreach).

Please join us in congratulating these three alumni. It is edifying to see the continued efforts of so many alumni to further the mission of

evangelization throughout the Church. We look forward to honoring more of our alumni in the years ahead.

sunday’s alumni eventsOn Sunday morning, the visiting alumni gathered together for Mass with our alumni priests followed by a time of praise and worship, confession and prayer. The alumni were invited to join us for a catered banquet before the real fun began:

• A program consisting of “forbidden entertainment” (funny skits that teams used to do in the early years);

• A fashion show highlighting the NET shirts teams wore through the years;

• Words of inspiration and wisdom from our alumni award winners;

• Praise and worship featuring popular songs from each decade.

Without the generosity of our donors large and small, we wouldn’t be here to celebrate 30 years of ministry. Thank you to our donors, benefactors and partners. You play a crucial role in helping us spread the Gospel to 60,000 young Catholics every year.

The weekend was a huge success, both in sheer numbers and in the great work that the Lord did in the hearts of our alumni and guests. Whether or not you were able to attend, we are grateful for your support of and prayers for our ministry.

The number of NET teams has grown from 1 team to 11 teams in 30 years and continues to expand. Every year we have more applicants and team members than the year before.

With 113 retreats conducted in 1981-1982 and 917 conducted this past year, there continues to be demand for NET retreats. The number of retreats peaked in 2000-2001 with 1,042 retreats conducted, and although the economy contributed to a decline in following years, this graph shows that we are on the upward swing once again.

NET Ministries is in awe of the generosity of our benefectors, friends and alumni for your constant support. Your gifts not only affirm our mission, but they also make it possible to spread the Gospel to Catholic youth year after year. Thank you for your support. Learn more at netusa.org/donate.

“great cause for hope in a darkened world”

archbishop nienstedt:

The following is an excerpt from The Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt’s keynote address at NET’s Youth Benefit Banquet on April 24, 2012.

Dear Friends,

It is good to be with you as we continue to give thanks to Almighty God for the great good He is accomplishing in and through NET Ministries. Through the powerful witness of young people on fire for the faith, NET Ministries continues to obey the command of Christ to “Go, therefore, into the whole world, and proclaim the good news.”

While we are here enjoying this banquet, the NET teams are out evangelizing. As we speak, 760 young Catholics are attending a NET retreat. At this very moment they are hearing our NET team members share about their love for Christ and the Church.

They are being given an opportunity to talk about their own experience of faith. They are being encouraged to entrust their lives to Christ. Each of those young people are being individually prayed with by one of our team members.

This is great cause for hope in a darkened world, a world longing for Jesus Christ and the saving message that is His own Person.

As you are well aware, the Holy Father recently proclaimed a Year of Faith for the Church beginning in

October. During this year of grace, Catholic believers are being invited to rededicate themselves to seeking the face of Christ, a face that is indeed the face of God himself. We must never be content with simply knowing about Jesus. Rather, we must know Jesus through an active, vibrant life of faith, marked by private prayer and regular participation in the sacramental life of the Church.

As Catholics, we know that this knowledge is not to be confused with sentimentality or “warm fuzzies.” These consolations of Christ are wonderful gifts, but they do not lie at the heart of Christian faith. Rather, to properly enter into this Year of Faith we must strive, once again, to choose to trust.

Abraham, our father in faith, could not have experienced any great consolations when he heard the strong voice of God, asking of him what mattered most to him – his own son. What a stirring, moving line in the book of Genesis – “[give to me] your son, your only son, the one you love.” The one you love.

“ Trust that God will take your gift ... and cause it to bear fruit

that will last.”

Page 13: Annual Report 11-12

Page 13ANNUAL REPORT 11-12Page 13

ANNUAL REPORT 11-12 / 30TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE

In these words, the Bible makes it clear what God is asking - everything. And in the fullest pre-figurement of Christ’s own sacrifice, Abraham willingly obeys – in loving trust, he utters a silent “fiat” and prepares to give back to God his cherished child. In the end, it matters little that Abraham did not actually sacrifice Isaac. Abraham’s heart had already been lifted up to the Father – the sacrifice was made.

My brothers and sisters, this act of loving trust – holding nothing back from God, giving it all back to him through a life of service, compassion and fidelity – this is the life of faith! And is this not what the NET teams are called to invite young people to do? To harness their inherent desire for greatness, found in the hearts of all young people; to utilize their God-given longing for romance, adventure, and radical love for the proclamation of the deepest adventure – to trust that the following of Jesus will not bring death, diminishment and loss, but rather life, hope and yes, joy!

The words of the Gospel, the words of Christ to the disciples on the sea: “Go out into the deep, and put your nets down for a catch” are words not nearly as dramatic as those spoken to Abraham, but they are an invitation to faith all the same. Jesus says to us, right here, and right now, even as we find ourselves in the stormy and unforgiving sea of a world with little faith, “Trust in me. I am here with you. Do not be afraid.”

During this coming Year of Faith, I know that NET Ministries will play a critical part in our own local celebrations and commemorations. But once this year concludes, the need for the work of NET will continue on, for many, many more years. To do this, this great work needs your support, most especially your prayers. But it is also in need of your financial support, offered up as a sacrificial gift of love. You gift of support is again not as dramatic as the sacrifice of Abraham, but it must be rooted in the same act of loving trust as the one made by our father in faith; trust that God will take your gift made in faith, hope and love and will cause it to bear fruit that will last.

Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt, Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and President of

NET Ministries’ Board of Directors

In 1987, a newspaper article on NET caught the attention of Shayne Bennett in Brisbane, Australia. Shayne shared our interest in youth evangelism so we invited him to come to St. Paul for a visit.

Shayne immediately saw the potential for NET teams to serve effectively in Australia. He came for NET’s training of the 1987-88 NET teams, accompanied by two Australian young adults to participate in our training and be formed in NET’s core values and methodology.

Having completed their training, these Australian “Netters” served on a NET team for 9 months, They, and their American teammates, traveled to Australia the following June to conduct three months of retreats for Australian youth.

The immediate success of this Australian pilot NET team, prompted Shayne to recruit eight Australians for the 1988-89 NET season. This intrepid team served in the U.S. from October through December, then following their Christmas break, flew to Australia to serve “down under” through November.

In the fall of 1989 a second NET team followed this same demanding schedule, after which Shayne was prepared to establish NET Ministries in Brisbane, Australia.

Since beginning to recruit and field their own NET teams in 1991, NET Australia has shared the Gospel with young people throughout Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.

2004 was the year that NET Australia answered a call from a group in Uganda, Africa to come and share its expertise in youth evangelization with them.

After sending a NET team to Uganda for a few years and working with local leadership, they have now established NET Ministries in the Diocese of Masaka and are conducting NET retreats throughout the country with a NET team comprised entirely of Ugandan team members.

NET Uganda is completely self-sustaining. They raise chickens and goats and grow their own crops.

Among his many achievements, Tony Foy is a Chartered Accountant (equivalent to the American CPA) and holds a Masters Degree in Innovation and Leadership. He is a former auditor and businessman. He worked in Dublin, Ireland and Austin, Texas as an accountant where, in his spare time, he volunteered in the local Life Teen Youth Group as a core team member.

Tony served on the board of NET Ireland for the previous five years before taking over as Executive Director in January 2012. Tony is a member of the TINE Executive in Ireland, a network of Catholic leaders who are active in the Catholic Church.

Tony is the first Irish-born director of NET Ireland. Next year, NET Ireland will field over thirty missionaries in four teams in the Emerald

Isle, an increase from twenty in this past NET year. Staff numbers will double to ten people.

Tony and his wife Sheena are blessed with seven wonderful children aged between three and fifteen.

In his spare time, he likes to cycle and go for walks in the hills and mountains in Ireland and play tennis, soccer and volleyball.

On April 21, 2012, NET Ministries and Providence Academy (the school at which NET’s school team ministers) teamed up to bring an outstanding Catholic event to young people in the Twin Cities: Lifeline West.

Hundreds of young Catholics flocked to Plymouth, MN to partake in praise and worship, Adoration, and an evening session featuring Richard Carrillo, NET alumnus and now a popular Catholic youth and young adult speaker.

One attendee commented on the night, saying, “Thank you for the Lifeline West night this month. I can’t begin to tell you what this event has meant to our family and the friends that we brought along. I am confident that this will grow like crazy if given the opportunity.”

There will be more Lifeline West events this coming year, both on October 13, 2012 and April 13, 2013. Be sure to read more and check out the schedule atwww.netusa.org/lifeline.
