Space for Life Foundation

Again this year, we are pleased to present the annual report, which marks the close of a pivotal year for Space for Life and its foundation.

In 2011, the Montréal Biodôme, Insectarium, Botanical Garden and Planetarium set out on a distinctly different path by coming together and helping people experience nature in a better way. Naturally, a new name was needed, and so the formerly named Montréal Nature Museums became Space for Life.

For the Foundation, which also adopted a new moniker, 2011 was a busy year. We worked hard preparing for our very first major fundraising campaign. Of course, a campaign this ambitious could not be mounted without a great deal of work. For that very reason, the team has focused its efforts on accomplishing the first stages, which, we are convinced, will make the campaign a resounding success.

In this new year, we are very confident that the permanent team’s drive and the Board members’ commitment will help the Foundation’s projects succeed. We all want to see the Space for Life institutions soar, and we consider ourselves privileged to be part of this outstanding movement unlike any on earth, which enables us to experience nature at the heart of an urban landscape.

To all our friends, donors and partners, thank you!

Bringing people closer to nature: that, in a nutshell, is what Space for Life is all about.

For nearly 10 years, the Space for Life Foundation has given concrete meaning to its mission statement by supporting the outreach, conservation, research and education activities of its four institutions.

By 2017, Space for Life will reach its full potential. One after another, the Foundation’s key projects will be unveiled. In 2011, Space for Life inaugurated the Biodiversity Centre at the Botanical Garden. Construction of the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium is well

under way. Soon the Insectarium will undergo a major metamorphosis and expansion, a fifth ecosystem will come to life at the Biodôme, and the Space for Life Public Square

will be created and will link all four institutions. Stimulating challenges await us over the coming years, and I am delighted to have the Foundation’s support.

I would like to thank the team and administrators at the Space for Life Foundation for their involvement, their dedication and their efforts to promote the organization’s values. Last year more than ever, we worked hand in hand to the great benefit of our institutions. Heartfelt thanks also go out to our donors, partners and friends for their help in raising Space for Life’s profile both here and abroad. The commitment that each and every one of you has demonstrated has helped propel our movement forward for the good of the planet.

Looking toward the future

Our realisations

Construction of the new Planetarium Rio Tinto Alcan continues

A short while ago, the Foundation made its mark by convincing aluminum giant Rio Tinto Alcan to donate $4 million to help build the new Planetarium. In 2011, the true scale of this accomplishment became evident when, on August 25, the ground-breaking ceremony was held at the site of the new Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium.

Since then, construction has been moving along at an impressive clip. The new Planetarium is being built according to LEED Platinum standards and will mesh seamlessly with the other Space for Life institutions. The Planetarium is

expected to open in Spring 2013.

Planetarium on the road

Throughout the 2010-2011 school year, while construction on the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium continued on the Space for Life site, a different planetarium, the Planetarium on the road, delighted preschoolers and elementary school students throughout the province. Thanks to Rio Tinto Alcan and the Space for Life Foundation, presenters from the Montréal Planetarium made their way to Quebec’s schools with an

enormous inflatable planetarium where kids got to enjoy a show about the treasures of the universe, just like at the Montréal Planetarium.

The Foundation is proud to have taken part in this innovative project and to have given the Planetarium an opportunity to pursue its educational mission, much to the delight of 10,000 children, even during the construction period.

Arrival of a prestigious collection

In February 2010, American Georges LeBolt, a passionate devotee of the art of bonsai, passed away at the age of 81. Concerned for the future of his prestigious bonsai collection and well aware of the Montréal Botanical Garden’s solid reputation and relationship with George, his family gifted the entire collection to the Garden. In fall 2010, part of the collection, valued at around $45,000, was exhibited in the visitor welcome building at the Botanical Garden, and starting in summer 2012, most of the collection’s 40 highly valuable specimens will be displayed at the Tree House and in the Japanese Garden. To help maintain, enhance and showcase the collection, the LeBolt family also donated US $25,000 to the Foundation last October.

Urban challenges, green solutions

Thanks to a $100,000 donation made by HSBC Bank Canada in 2009, the Foundation has been able to fund the “Green Solutions to Urban Challenges”

project organized by the Botanical Garden’s activities staff.

This educational program helps young people become creative researchers by engaging them in a scientific process inspired by the wonders of the living world.

An evening abuzz with excitement !

The Foundation’s Annual Benefit Event took place last September, and like every year, guests were treated to an outstanding party at one of the

Space for Life institutions.

The Insectarium charmed attendees with its all-new permanent exhibit, “We Are the Insects.” Welcomed by dazzlingly colourful giant butterflies and then plunged into a cosy environment from which insects of all kinds emerged, participants later enjoyed a

cocktail reception made up of local specialties.

The fun continued with an auction benefiting the Foundation. Thanks to the auction and the gala itself, the Foundation raised a respectable $115,000. The Foundation would like to thank the members of the organizing

committee, as well as the entire permanent team, for the outstanding work they put into making the event so memorable.

Congratulations to the whole team, and thank you !

Flagstone campaign

In a state of perpetual change since it was inaugurated in 2007, Donors’ Square has continued to immortalize the donations of Foundation donors and their families by means of flagstones engraved with donors’ names and laid around the statue of Brother Marie-Victorin in the Botanical Garden’s visitor welcome building.

In 2011, like every year, work took place in April to lay the flagstones sold over the previous months. We encourage you to take your place among the other donors via this concrete show of support and lasting

appreciation.

In 2012, the Foundation’s team and Board members will join forces to prepare for our first major fundraising campaign. Working in conjunction with Space for Life’s directors, we will pull out all the stops to mount a unique campaign, the proceeds of which will be used to fund key Space for Life development projects. From the construction of the new Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium to the total redesign of the Insectarium, not to mention the creation of a new ecosystem at the Biodôme and captivating new spaces at the Botanical Garden, Space for Life has big plans and expects to be able to count on the Foundation’s support to carry out those plans in order to bring new life to the site.
