Dear Members and Contributors:

Two thousand and seven was yet another year of remarkable accomplishments at the Museum. I hope you will share my pleasure, and that of my fellow Trustees, in the Museum’s many accomplishments during the past year as you read this Annual Report.

Throughout 2007, the Museum continued its tradition of offering a wide variety of excellent programs, including: two special exhibits, Augustus Saint-Gaudens: American Sculptor of the Gilded Age and Eloquent Vistas: The Art of Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Photography from the George Eastman House Collection, the Whitehall Lecture Series, the theme of which was: City Bosses and Company Towns, the critically acclaimed Flagler Museum Music Series, the annual Bluegrass Concert to benefit the Southern Arts Federation, the annual Easter Egg Hunt, and the Fourth of July Celebration in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion.

This past year the Museum hosted a number of prestigious meetings, such as: the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts - where Florida Secretary of State Kurt Browning delivered the first speech of his new tenure on art and culture, the Palm Beach Civic Association’s Annual Meeting - where the Palm Beach Mayor delivered his State-of-the-Town Address, and the Palm Beach County History Day Student Project Competition.

The Museum was honored to receive a number of awards in 2007, including: the Florida Association of Museum’s Innovator Award for the production of the Tiffany at the World’s Columbian Exposition catalogue, a design award from the Palm Beach County Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and an award from the Palm Beach County Chapter of The Associated General Contractors of America for the Flagler Kenan Pavilion.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORTTwo thousand seven was yet another great year of programming and improvements at the Flagler Museum. None of the programming and improvements described in this report could have been accomplished without the support of the Museum’s many Members, Contributors, Sponsors, and Grantors. On behalf of the Museum staff and myself, I thank everyone listed later in this report for making 2007 in many ways the best year in the Museum’s history.

ExhibitsIn 2007 the Museum hosted two fascinating exhibits in its second floor gallery. In January, Augustus Saint-Gaudens: American Sculptor of the Gilded Age opened featuring an impressive range of work by the artist some believe to be America’s greatest. The exhibit was comprised of some 60 objects on loan from the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site. In September Eloquent Vistas: The Art of Nineteenth- Century American Landscape Photography from the George Eastman House Collection opened. The exhibit included many rare images taken at a time when few could travel to see America’s amazing landscapes for themselves and photography in such remote locations was in itself a monumental undertaking. Eloquent Vistas was regarded by the Palm Beach Daily News as a Season “standout”exhibit.

A hands-on activity for children and a gallery talk for adults were hosted by the Museum in conjunction with each exhibit. For the Saint-Gaudens exhibit children worked with a local sculptor, Karyl Karpinos, to make their own creations in clay and Dr. Henry Duffy, author of the catalogue that accompanied the exhibit, gave a public gallery talk. For the Eloquent Vistas exhibit children experienced first hand the process of capturing and developing images using a pinhole camera and the Director of the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, Dr. Anthony Bannon, gave a public gallery talk.

Programs and Member EventsIn its eighth season the Flagler Museum Music Series again wowed audiences with critically acclaimed performances by the Claremont Trio, the Rossetti String Quartet, pianist Pedja Muzijevic, Violinist Janice Martin, and the Georgia Guitar Quartet. The concerts were described as: the Claremont Trio was “Positively Spellbinding” – Palm Beach Daily News. Rossetti “invested a compelling level of depth and insight into their playing … they have a focused, natural tone and precise balance” – The Palm Beach Post. Pianist Pedja Muzijevic’s “performance was among the best I’ve heard” – Ken Keaton, Music Reviewer Palm Beach Daily News. Janice Martin “plays the 1708 Burstein-Bagshawe Stradivarius, with a dark and creamy tone and a huge emotional and technical range.” – Palm Beach Daily News. The Georgia Guitar Quartet “let loose with a high-spirited and musically adventurous program” – Palm Beach Daily News. Violinist, Janice Martin, taught a master class for students of the Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts.

Likewise, the 22nd annual Whitehall Lecture Series continued to intrigue audiences while furthering our knowledge and appreciation of the Gilded Age through a series of five lectures around the theme of City Bosses and Company Towns. The lecture topics included; Company Town Hershey, PA, Boss Tweed of New York, Boss Cox of Cincinnati, Company Town Pullman, IL, and Henry Flagler’s West Palm Beach -

which contrary to popular perception was conceived by Flagler not as a company town, but rather a town he hoped would become Florida’s largest city.

Working with The Palm Beach Post and the School District of Palm Beach County, the Museum’s Education Department produced a 32-page Newspapers-in-Education Tabloid (NIE Tab for short), titled Flagler’s Florida that in 2007 was distributed to about 250,000 fourth and fifth grade students of the 19 coastal counties of eastern Florida.

The distribution of the new NIE Tab is made possible by funds raised through the Whitehall Society, a Museum support group formed in 2006. The Whitehall Society seeks to develop a new generation of Museum Members who share an interest in history and preservation, through activities, programs, and fundraisers. In January Café Sapori hosted a reception as a fundraiser for the Whitehall Society. In February the Whitehall Society’s annual fundraiser Dancing After Dark drew substantial attendance and sponsorship support. The Whitehall Society’s annual Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Egg Roll on the Museum’s South Lawn drew an even larger crowd in 2007. And, in November the Whitehall Society again partnered with Hollywould and designer Holly Dunlap to host a reception at the Museum celebrating the opening of a new Season in Palm Beach.

In its second year the Museum’s Bluegrass Concert was more popular than ever, featuring the Larry Stephenson Band and the Krüger Brothers. The concert benefited the Southern Arts Federation’s Emergency Relief Fund helping it to assist cultural organizations throughout the Southeast with the development of emergency response plans.

Since its founding more than 47 years ago, the Museum has worked with the School District of Palm Beach County in a variety of ways. Each year thousands of fourth and fifth grade students visit the Museum as part of their education about Florida history. The Museum also hosts teachers’ workshops as well as the annual History Day competition for the School District of Palm Beach County. For the past 21 years the Museum Mentor Program has paired Docent Mentors with students to develop their creative writing skills. In 2007 the Museum further expanded its partnership with the School District to serve students by adding a second session of the Mentor program, which was made possible by a grant from the Stratmann Intergenerational Fund of the Community Fund for Palm Beach and Martin Counties.

Most of America’s most cherished traditions and institutions were established during America’s Gilded Age. Founded in 1904, the Carnegie Hero Fund was established to recognize and support the heroes among us. “We live in a heroic age,” Andrew Carnegie wrote in the founding documents for the Hero Fund, “not seldom are we thrilled by

deeds of heroism where men or women are injured or lose their lives in attempting to preserve or rescue their fellows.” Each year a special few individuals are awarded the Carnegie Hero Medal. Over the years many medal winners have been from Florida. In 2006 an annual Carnegie Hero Lecture was added to the Museum’s programs as a way of reminding us all of the heroes among us and the great traditions of the Gilded Age. In April of 2007 Palm Beach resident, L. Rodger Currie, was awarded a Carnegie Hero Medal during the annual Carnegie Hero Fund Lecture at the Flagler Museum. Mr. Currie was awarded the prestigious Medal for saving six people from a burning a boat on Nantucket Sound on July 12, 2005.

Mr. Currie spotted the 48-foot yacht bellowing 10-foot flames from stern to mid-ship. Despite the blaze, high winds and four-foot seas, Currie and a friend brought their vessel along side the burning boat to rescue the passengers. While his friend remained at the wheel, Currie stood on the bow to help the victims onto the rescue vessel. All six passengers escaped the blaze including a child, who was tossed to Currie by her mother. Thanks to Currie, all passengers escaped with only minor injuries.

Each year the Museum celebrates its anniversary on June 5th by honoring its founder Jean Flagler Matthews. A granddaughter of Henry Flagler, Mrs. Matthews saved Whitehall from demolition in 1959 and formed a nonprofit corporation to operate Whitehall as a public museum. In 2007 Founder’s Day drew more than 2,000 visitors who toured the grounds, Whitehall, and Railcar No. 91.

With the addition of the Flagler Kenan Pavilion in 2005, the view of the fireworks over Lake Worth from the Museum grounds was dramatically enhanced, making the annual Fourth of July Celebration at the Museum even more popular in recent years. And, the Museum’s Fourth of July Celebration in 2007 was perhaps the most popular ever.

The Museum added summer camps to the Museum’s programming for the first time in 2007. The two camps, Crime Investigation in the Gilded Age and Inventions that Changed the World, are geared to middle school students and are designed to engage campers through a variety of hands-on activities. The camps teach students about: the investigative techniques developed a century ago, such as finger printing, blood typing, polygraph testing, and crime scene photo-documentation - and - the many inventions that so dramatically changed the world, such as radio, wireless telephones (believe it or not, invented in 1896), phonographs, movies, and much more.

Christmas at Whitehall is the Museum’s oldest tradition. For 47 years the youngest of Henry Flagler’s descendants gather to light the giant Christmas tree in the Grand Hall on the first Sunday of December. In 2007 four great-great-great-grandchildren attended the tree lighting. Since their introduction in 1999, Holiday Evening Tours at the Museum have remained a popular addition to Whitehall’s Christmas traditions. Based on continuing research using historic photographs and contemporary accounts, the Museum staff continued to make Whitehall’s Christmas decorations more authentic. Reviving the Christmas traditions of the time period when Whitehall was built serves not only to educate visitors about the Gilded Age, but makes the experience of visiting Whitehall during the Christmas Holidays unique, interesting, and fun.

Physical Plant ImprovementsThe consistently high levels of relative humidity experienced in South Florida year- round are the greatest threat to the long-term preservation of Whitehall’s interiors. To insure that the Museum’s state-of-the-art climate control system continues to maintain the appropriate humidity and temperature levels when the Museum is without power, as it was for extended periods of time during the recent hurricanes, automatic power transfer switches were installed at the Museum in 2007 and a custom made trailer and generator were built so that during an extended power outage, the generator and transfer switches will automatically supply the Museum with the power needed to continue the operation of the climate control system.

A new state-of-the-art clock was added to the Flagler Kenan Pavilion in 2007. While the clock is nearly identical the old clock that graced Penn Station a hundred years ago, it is one-of-a-kind. Not only is the clock controlled by radio signals synchronized to the atomic clock in Colorado, but the clock lens is electrically controlled to make the clock face disappear when guests at evening events in the Pavilion prefer not to be reminded of the time.

Since 1995 the Museum has undertaken an aggressive restoration and building plan that made this National Historic Landmark a model of preservation, and opened a new world of programming possibilities. In 2007 the Museum began planning for the fifth and final stage of the restoration and building plan that began almost 13 years ago. Completion of the project will result in the installation of an elevator that will serve the second floor, the construction of a small research library, the construction of additional exhibit preparation space, and the addition of more staff offices. This final phase of the restoration and building plan is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008, when

for first time in Whitehall’s history visitors who cannot climb the Grand Hall stairway will have the opportunity to see Whitehall’s second floor via the new elevator.

Conservation and RestorationEach year for the past five years, the Museum has worked with a conservator to restore and rewire Whitehall’s many sconces and chandeliers and in 2007 the four massive Courtyard sconces were removed, restored and reinstalled.

For over seven years Museum Docents have worked to reproduce, by hand, the crystal beaded light bulb covers that once graced more than 180 light fixtures throughout Whitehall. After countless hours of work by the Docents this massive project was completed in 2007 and, for the first time in more than 80 years, Whitehall’s electric lights once again look as elegant and grand as they did when Whitehall was completed in 1902. AcquisitionsThe Museum was fortunate in 2007 to add a number of objects to the collection and archives, including:

Leadership and RecognitionEach year the Flagler Museum hosts a number of prestigious groups. In January the Museum hosted a public meeting with the Legislative Delegation of Palm Beach County. In March the Museum hosted the Kennedy Center’s President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts, which featured newly-appointed Florida Secretary of State Kurt Browning’s first speech on the importance of art and culture in Florida. 16 The Flagler Museum Whitehall Society hosted Dancing After Dark. Guests danced the night away in the West Room to the

sounds of Liquid Pleasure. The after-dinner dance benefited the Museum’s Education programs.

18 The Whitehall Lecture Series presented Flagler Museum Executive Director John Blades who spoke on “West Palm Beach

Company Town, Servants’ Town, or Something Else?”

20 The Flagler Museum Music Series presented violinist Janice Martin in concert

benefited the Southern Arts Federation.
