PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Jeffrey Israel

I would like to start by congratulating all those that represented the Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club last season. The club is currently going through a rebuilding stage as many of our past experienced senior players retired before the last season began. As a result of these retirements our on-field results were not as good as we would have hoped; unfortunately none of our XI’s made the finals last season. The difficult and tough season provided many opportunities for players to gain some valuable experience and allowed the club to introduce many new younger faces to our 1st and 2nd XI. Hopefully the lessons learned last season will hold us in good stead for the future. I would like to congratulate Dave Gelbart for his outstanding season. Dave took over as captain of the 1st XI and worked tirelessly to develop and encourage those players in his side. Dave handled the role as captain superbly as was highlighted by the swag of awards Dave picked up this season. Dave’s brilliant season was also acknowledged by the VTCA as he was rewarded with inclusion to the VTCA team of the year All of the club’s captains put in a huge effort to maintain and encourage their players in sometimes difficult circumstances. Paul Fink led the 2nd XI last season and Jeff Nadelman took up the challenge of captaining the 3rds. A new player, and possibly one of the youngest captains ever to captain a team at the club, Jeremy Balbin took on the role of captaining the 4th XI in only his first season at the club. The “Silver Arc 5th XI” had Ian Jones as its captain, and his experience and enthusiasm was great inspiration for those playing in his side. We as a club are very lucky to have available to us the expertise and assistance of our senior club coaches. The dedication that Steve Sandor, Joey Silver and Mark Simon show towards our club is really inspirational and very much appreciated. I would strongly encourage all players to seek out their assistance next season, and work with them on improving skills and cricket in general. Dave Gelbart took on the role as training co-ordinator, assisting the other coaches with planning, drills and fitness work, and his background in personal training really brought a new prospective and approach to our training and preparation. I would also like to acknowledge the effort that Simon Fisher put in last season as the Chairman of Selectors. Simon spent hours on the phone each week chasing up players to fill-in as we were so short on players.

I would like to highlight and thank our most generous sponsors for their continued and on-going support and sponsorship for the last season. Without the continued support of our sponsors our club would not be able to continue to offer the excellent coaching and facilities we are all so proud of and lucky to have. Special thanks to Rod Morley and TBM for his unwavering support of our club as our major sponsor. The Sunday side’s sponsor Alex Rouditser and the “Silver Arc” continued to support the club, also sponsoring the “Silver Arc “cup that is the marquee game on the past players and family day. Due to the continued support and sponsorship from our “Kosher Sponsors” we were also able to once again continue with our kosher initiative, and also increase the “Haymishe” feeling around the club. I would like to congratulate and thank all of our sponsors for their commitment to Jewish sport, and in particular our club. The committee and club have made a real concerted effort to re-unite its past players with the club once again. Last season, under the leadership of Leon Jacobs we saw the Past Players Association (PPA) reach record breaking numbers, with over 100 PPA members. The benefits of having these past players involved with the club has been dramatic; not only are we financially supported, but there was the introduction of a PPA T20 side captained by Sam Fry, there was the second annual past players golf day, a President’s lunch that saw a reunion of two flag-winning sides as well as my personal highlight - the Past Players and Family day. This day highlights our club, and this season saw the introduction of the Milo In2Cricket kids at the lunch break. I was most proud of the club on this day, as we had literally hundreds of supporters, players and participants involved in the marquee day for our club. Last season saw the introduction of a new initiative spearheaded by Leon Jacobs – The Leadership Group. Leon coordinated this group, organising guest speakers and other leadership training for the guys that were nominated to be involved. This initiative is something that we are all very enthusiastic about, and we look forward to its continued growth over the coming seasons. I am really proud of the effort made by our committed and enthusiastic committee last season. The committee worked tirelessly to ensure that the clubs off-field position was improved upon. It is due to the countless hours and effort that the committee has put in that we are so well-placed to face the challenges that we will face over the next few seasons. As a committee we are always looking for ways to improve the facilities, equipment and club in general, and of the many projects before us, a most exciting

possibility that we are currently investigating is the improvements of our nets and outfield. Marc Felman once again was the Vice President, and his cool head and clear thinking were of utmost value during some of the season’s difficulties. David Majtlis continued as Treasurer, whilst Brad Abrahams also continued in his role as club secretary. Joel Beebe was instrumental in the efficient running of the club, providing David Maitlis with much needed support and advice. Paul Fink once again maintained our website, and Benny Spicer managed the sponsors for us. I must congratulate Leon Jacobs for his continued enthusiasm in a variety of roles last season, culminating in Leon being awarded the Kurt Defris Award for his outstanding work for the club. Craig Woolf handled the fundraising efforts, and Simon Fisher’s on-going role as Junior Club Liaison really made his job of Chairman of Selectors a little easier. We as a committee were also really lucky to have the experience and guidance from Dean Kino and Barry Kave that can only come with years of cricket administration and involvement. There were also some new faces to the committee, with Simon Morawetz joining and writing excellent match reports for the Jewish News, as well as the website. Darren Bloch planned and organised the club party and his insight into the player’s perspectives really assisted us with the planning and running of the club. Past player Jarrod Newton also joined the committee assisting Leon with much of the PPA roles and responsibilities. There are many players, past players and supporters who have put in a lot of work to ensure the club’s success last season. Nathan Rothschild once again volunteered for any job that we needed help with, including poker night and co-hosting the presentation night. Mark Soffer was brilliant, taking over as 2nd XI captain when Paul Fink was injured, co-hosting the presentation night, and being keen to help out in any way he could. Aaron Adelist was the official club cook again, and his dedication and commitment to our club as well as the Kosher Initiative is something that we must all recognise and congratulate. Finally a personal thank you for the support I received during the difficult times I faced last season with the passing of my late mother. I have always felt that our club is more than just a place to go to play cricket: it is a social, religious and community-based club. The support I received from the club during these difficult times was most appreciated. I know that my family really appreciated the 1st XI wearing black arm bands in memory

of my late mother. I would like to personally thank all those current and past players, coaches, sponsors, supporters and committee members that made such a difficult time easier to deal with. I am enthusiastic about the future and the next season. I am continuing in my role as President and am looking forward to continuing to work alongside the committee to enable the club to improve and grow. We as a committee have ensured the off-field position of the club, and now this season we are looking to turn our attention to on- field. We know that there will be many challenges to face this season, none more pressing than recruitment. I and the committee for 2010-11 have already indicated our commitment to the club, and I would encourage all players to do the same. We will need to find some new players and hopefully encourage some past players out of retirement. I would encourage you all to assist with this and start preparing now for the next season, and hopefully a flag or more for the club.

1st XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – David Gelbart Season 2009/10 was a season of learning for everybody involved in the First X1. We were a very young squad playing against experienced and hardened cricketers every week in the newly formed South Division so to manage three wins for the season – including a win against eventual third placed Port Melbourne- and avoid relegation was a solid effort. It should also be acknowledged that the two teams that we drew to play twice were the eventual grand finalists so we definitely had the tougher end of the draw.

The First X1 used 24 players in total for the season including 9 debutants so we definitely exposed a lot of our young talent to 1st X1 cricket. I’m certain that everyone who played for the first time realizes that it is quite a big step up but with solid pre seasons, regular practice at the right intensity and a confident attitude; it is definitely possible for this club to achieve regular wins and finals appearances given the talent that we have.

Our season started at E.E. Gunn Reserve back in early August on cold Sunday mornings where players repeated hundreds of repetitions of basic close range fielding skills, specific fitness exercises and mental toughness exercises. We then progressed to indoor net training in preparation to round 1. Our general attitude was quite good however more consistent appearances from senior players would have strengthened our pre season.

Round 1 arrived very quickly and the eventual premiers (Bentleigh) totally outclassed us as we nearly lost outright in a one-day game but the next week we played the eventual runners up and gave a much better account of ourselves losing to Beaumaris in another one day-game. Round 3 saw us beat Port Melbourne at home who finished third for the season. Daniel Kaplan played a crucial innings scoring 43 over 2 weekends at the top of the order, steering us to a first innings win. This win was definitely a highlight of the season.

If round 3 was a big win then beating Chelsea (former premiers in South A) was even bigger. Despite Chelsea being 2/90 overnight (chasing 197) and us dropping 7 catches while defending on day 2, we managed to bowl Chelsea out for 195 to score a famous victory for the club. This game was marked by the passing of Irene Israel (president

Jeffery Israel’s mother) and Anders Simon’s grandmother. It also saw club great Gary Litinsky play his last game for the season ahead of the birth of his daughter Lily.

Rounds five & 6 against Brighton District (h) and Cheltenham (a) were both games that we could have won leading into the break. Some tactical errors, lack of experience, confidence and concentration at crucial moments are elements of our game that need improvement in order for us to win these games and be firmly entrenched in the four at the mid season break. These two rounds saw David Fayman and David Matjlis really launch their seasons and gain the confidence to become key members of our team and feared by opposition teams.

After the break we fronted the 2 eventual grand finalists again back to back and lost both games easily, ending our finals hopes. Our boys learnt that in all future years of their careers, certain teams will have certain players that can destroy opposition off their own bat. But to play against that type of opposition is a great education because it shows what is required to play finals at this level. Dave Fayman and Dave Matjlis again showed that they can match it with any opposition in the competition.

Round 9 vs. Melbourne High saw another major milestone for one of our team leaders. David Majtlis scored his maiden 1st X1 century in a great display of concentration, discipline and stroke making. Despite losing the game, our mini celebration of David’s 124 in the rooms after the game was something that I will never forget.

Another bad loss in round 10 vs. Murrumbeena put us in relegation zone as we were bowled out for under 200 again (144). Devan Spilkin on debut looked totally unfazed by the step up to 1st X1 cricket and handled Beena’s pacemen comfortably to top score with 32 not out.

Round 11 required us to win the points and then pick up at least another 1.4 bonus points in order to avoid relegation. With the addition of club legend Daniel Onas into the side, a brilliant batting display by Brad Matjlis, a five wicket hall from David Matjlis and 3 crucial wickets from debutant Simon Fisher, we managed to secure first innings points. A quick hundred from our batsmen, a last minute declaration and 2 quick wickets saw us just squeeze over the line to avoid relegation by 0.04 of a point. The importance of bonus points during the season is something that all of our young guys will hopefully always remember.

Page 12

Finishing third last is never something to celebrate but at least we ended a tough season by singing the club song together and feeling like we gained some reward for everybody’s hard work and some momentum for next season.

Over the season we placed a lot of emphasis on the following areas:

1. Basic skills of the game 2. Mental Toughness / Concentration / Winning Crucial Moments 3. Physical Fitness & Preparation 4. Social Atmosphere & Club Awareness 5. Leadership

Overall we made good progress in these areas although some of the guys found it difficult playing in certain X1s before they were physically ready. To all of those guys who had a go anyway and did his best - well done and congratulations to you. I’m sure you all learnt some valuable lessons and will be better cricketers in the future for the experience.

On reflection, our biggest area to improve on for season 2010-11 is our patience and application to bat all day (80 overs) more often and try to post consistent scores of 200 -220 plus. If we can do that as a team more often as we did in round 11 vs. Hampton then we will win more games than we lose and become a regular finals contender. We also need to understand that the only way to succeed as a club to have all players available to play in as many games as possible during the season. Hopefully more players can make a full season commitment in the years to come.

I would like to thank Jeffery Israel and his committee for appointing me the captain for this season and for all of their support throughout the season. I would also like to thank my vice captains Anders Simon & David Matjlis for their on-field support throughout the year. They both really stood up as leaders when they were required many times during the year which epitomizes leadership to me. Anders and David will make great leaders of the club in the future and I really enjoyed playing alongside them each week.

Enormous thanks to our coaches Steve Sandor, Joey Silver & Mark Simon who where great personal mentors to me and to all of the boys. These guys are the backbones of the club and for all of their hard work deserve to see the success that has eluded the club since 1983/4. Hopefully that is not too far away.

To my fellow captains / dinner partners, Paul Fink, Jeff Nadelman, Jeremy Balbin, Ian Jones and Chairman of selectors Simon Fisher – you all did such a wonderful job as captains and selectors and it was a pleasure to meet with you every second Tuesday for selection. We had some late nights but I always felt that we were always on the same page in putting the club before individuals and doing the right thing by the players. I was very proud to be a part of such a special group of guys.

Thank you to all of the boys that I coached and played with this season. You all behaved very maturely on the field and always showed respect to your captain, opposition, umpires and to the game. I hope we can all learn a lot from season 2009/10, have a big pre season and capitalize on our learning year by having a successful 2010/11.

Thank you very much to our scorers Laurie Shneider and Tal Lerner for being a part of our team this season. Scoring is a thankless task and all good clubs have good, reliable scorers so we were very lucky to have those guys help us this season. We are also very lucky to have Dave Robinson as our curator. He is very good at his job and is a terrific fellow too so I thank him for all of his work this season.

Special thanks to two great clubmen that I would like to mention. If not for Daniel Onas putting his hand up to help us by playing in round 11 then we may very well have been relegated and looked back on season 2009/10 with negative memories. So thanks Dan for helping out your club and an old mate in time of need – I owe you a favour!!! A lot of people don’t realize that a great piece of clubmanship occurred in round eleven. Leon Jacobs spent his entire Saturday afternoon down at Beaumaris’ ground for the single purpose of relaying information from that game to me on the field via Mark Simon so that I could know the points scenario throughout the day. It was a very selfless effort from Leon and definitely assisted in our avoiding relegation. Thank you very much to Dan and Leon – I will always remember and appreciate your efforts on that day.

Finally to my family (my wife Belinda and our parents Ian, Rita, Mike & Eve) who deserve a lot of credit for enabling me to play by helping to look after our children on Saturdays and during the week while I was at training. All of my awards belong to them as nothing would have been possible without their help and support. David Gelbart 1st X1 Captain

2nd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Paul Fink

At the end of the season, three wins for the second XI would appear on paper to be a disappointing result from a team perspective. The team finished 7th on the ladder and a long way from finals action, however as always there were plenty of positives to be drawn from the 2009/10 season in the Magoos.

The major positive was that from an individual perspective there were a lot of players in the seconds this year who improved out if sight and whose talents bode well for the future of the club. In previous seasons the second XI were largely able to rely on an older brigade of players – names such as Sheffield, Beebe, Harris, Faber, Meadows and Weiss – to form the nucleus of the side, but season 2009/10 was a new-look lineup consisting of mostly youngsters. In fact for the majority of the season I found myself – at 30 years of age – to be far and away the oldest player in the team.

Of the 11 players who lined up for the 2nd XI in Round 1, nine of them would go on to play 1st XI cricket this season, a statistic indicating just how much many of our youngsters have improved in a short space of time.

The most remarkable rise has undoubtedly been that of Michael Feiler, who had only played four games in the 3rd XI prior to season 2009/10. Due to my wedding taking place in October I was unable to attend much of the pre-season, and during this time 1st XI skipper Dave Gelbart told me of his suggestion that Michael could potentially be a 1st XI cricketer in the coming season based on what he’d seen. Despite my initial surprise upon hearing this, I was certainly happy to bow to Dave’s judgment and true enough, Michael picked up 20 wickets to win the 2nd XI Bowling Averages, as well earning a 1st XI cap and playing three games at the highest level. Michael is a mature bowler for his age – he hits the pitch hard, bowls economically and makes batsman uncomfortable at the crease – and was a deserved winner of the Michael Klinger Rising Star Award.

Speaking of improved cricketers, I need to make mention of Devan Splikin and Brandon Friedman, both solid top-order batsman who continue to take their games to a new levels with every passing season. Devan has blossomed into a talented striker of the ball and despite missing some cricket mid-way through the season, his half-century against MHSOB was well rewarded with a berth in the 1st XI where he immediately made an impact.

Page 17

Brandon is another under 17 player who despite not setting the world on fire with his statistics this year, was a regular member of the 2nd XI top order. Brandon is one of the most gifted batsmen I have come across for his age. He has a wonderful temperament and shows incredible maturity when batting - highlighted no better than his sensational 48 in the last round of the season – and will undoubtedly go a long way in his cricketing career.

Ryan Fisher is another youngster with a tremendously bright future, both with the gloves and the bat, and should be congratulated on a fine debut season at the club. Ryan has a fantastic technique at the crease and has shown to be adaptable enough to be able to bat in any position in the order, and his glovework makes him a wonderful all-round cricketer.

There is youth and then there is even younger youth, and I was fortunate enough to be able to select two U15 players in Jordan Klotnick and Theodore Rosenthal at various stages throughout the year. Both these guys are stars of the future, look out for their names on honour boards in years to come.

Other players to show glimpses of brilliance this season included Jason Webb, Mark Shnider and Simon Morawetz – all whom have techniques to take them far – as well as bowlers Marc Leiba and Ben Miller. Most of these guys were playing 2nd XI cricket this year for the first time and all of them held their own and suggested they were certainly not playing above their level.

I must also make mention of four other players to make huge leaps forward this season, and who, relatively speaking, were often veterans of the team - Adam Lubitz, Simon Fisher, Darren Bloch and Mark Soffer.

“Luby” picked up 19 wickets in only 5 games in the 2’s and rightly played the majority of the second half of the season as a key member of the 1st XI. He has a massive heart (not to mention calves), gives absolutely everything when out on the field and contributes greatly to the fabric of the teams he plays in and to the club in general.

“Fish” wholeheartedly deserved his 1st XI debut in Round 11 after having another consistent year bowling his wily off-spinners, and improving with every game. He is always willing to stand up when the team needs him to, and is a sensational clubman.

“Blochy” is a workhorse who improved his batting immeasurably this year, in no small way because of his dedication and effort that he puts in on the training track. He also took massive steps forward as a leader around the club this year by taking drills and

Page 18

ensuring everyone’s preparation was at a high level, and is widely respected by the entire playing group. Just like Fish and Luby, he was simply a delight to captain and play alongside this year, and all three of them will no doubt play a lot of 1st XI cricket together in the future.

“Soff” is a remarkable bloke, an ornament to the club and would be a walk-up start in Laurie’s good blokes XI any day of the week. I would now like to officially take the opportunity to thank him for deputising as captain in my place for the first three rounds due to my wedding, and as it turned out the final two rounds due to injury. After a four year absence while studying in Queensland, Mark had no hesitation in putting his hand up to fill the void and quickly fitted back into the swing of things at the club and re-established his reputation of being a mature, competent leader both on and off the field. This was well acknowledged at Presentation Night when became a worthy winner of both the Hans Spitz Best Clubman and Rob Lourie Most Determined Awards. Mark is a born leader whom I have had the pleasure of knowing for many years, including coaching him in the under 17’s where it was obvious that he would one day either captain our great club and/or become a valuable committee member. He has great tactical awareness, is a fine batsman with fierce determination and courage, and off the field he is the quintessential clubman who always contributes and whom is everyone respects and naturally follows.

There were many team and individual highlights throughout the season, as follows:

• David Fayman’s match-winning 45 in the Rd 1 victory vs. premiers Bentleigh. • Ryan Fisher’s 2nd XI debut also in Rd 1, including 3 catches, 1 stumping and

scoring a mature 11no to help guide the side home, as well as his match-winning 34 against Brighton District in Rd 5.

• Adam Lubitz 4/30 in Rd 2 v Beamaris and 5/25 against Cheltenham in Rd 6. • Michael Feiler’s performance v Port Melbourne in Rd 3, taking 5/29 and 3/28. • Darren Bloch (83) and Devan Spilkin (42) putting on 116 for the first wicket in

the second innings v Port Melbourne in Rd 3, after Mark Soffer’s gutsy declaration which almost resulted in the most unlikely of outright victories.

• Mark Shnider’s hard-hitting classy 72 vs. Chelsea in Rd 4, including a fantastic 67-run stand with Jason Webb (23) to rescue the side from early trouble.

• Ben Miller’s post-tea bowling spell against Chelsea in Rd 4 where he was all over Chelsea’s two top-flight 1st XI batsman.

• Simon Fisher’s 5/28 vs. Beaumaris in Rd 7. • Devan Spilkin (52) and Jordan Klotnick (38) vs. MHSOB in Rd 9.

Annual Report 2009/10

Page 19

• Mark Soffer’s fighting knock of 25 off 50 overs against Murrumbeena in Rd 10 to almost force a draw.

• A fantastic win in Rd 11 to finish the season on a high, including Brandon Friedman (48) and Josh Sacks (45) showing the way with the bat and Ben Miller (3/45) leading the way with the ball.

To finish, I would like to say a sincere thank you the following people:

• All the players who played in the 2nd XI this season and for giving your all. • The committee for the tremendous amount of work they put in all year round

and for showing faith in my ability to do the job as 2nd XI skipper. • The coaches – Colonel, Mark & Joey - for all their hard work and dedication

which often goes unheralded. • Dave Robinson for all his assistance and guidance on pitches, covers etc. • My fellow captains and of course Simon Fisher (Chairman of Selectors) for all

the selection nights trying to ensure we picked all teams properly and fairly. • Former 2nd XI skipper Darren Seidl who was often used as my sounding board

for selection issues. Daz has a fantastic cricket brain and has served the club wonderfully well in recent years. I hope he is not lost to the club as he has a tremendous amount to offer, and I sincerely hope his body allows him to one day make a return to the field.

• My wife Lauren for her patience and understanding through all the meetings, long days in the field and phone calls etc.

To all the guys who played in the 2nd XI this year – enjoy the off-season and be sure to prepare yourselves well for an even bigger year in 2010/11. Paul Fink 2nd XI Captain

3rd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Jeff Nadelman

To everyone who played with me in the 3rd XI this past season, thank you very much.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to lead you guys and hopefully was able to guide and help in some way.

The season was very mixed with some great wins, but also some losses.

We have a great batch of younger players coming through and with persistence from our coaches and selection.

Teams giving this younger group of players a chance will lay down a foundation for the future of our great club.

Some key juniors I would like to mention:

Zac Goldberg what a great bowler, he possesses a real talent that needs to be exploited.

Mathew Gamsu who has improved his keeping out of site and is a definitely a potential ones keeper as well as a great batsmen.

Young Theo Rosenthal - l what a breath of fresh air and a potential state batsmen, and great in the field.

I want to thank some senior players who I really enjoyed playing with and that I relied on throughout the season. Big Bad Barry is always consistent and someone who would tie up an end and chip in for a wicket or two. Ash Cooper at times is a destroyer who could hit a ball so sweetly was such an asset to our team - he was always keen to open the bowling, great in the field and always backed me up, and was by far the best player all round in the 3rd XI. When available to me, I also really enjoyed playing with Michael Bell, a great bowler and an awesome striker of a cricket ball

Once again thanks to everyone who played with me. I am looking forward to playing next season again, maybe not as captain but as a support in any way I can. Jeff Nadelman 3rd XI Captain

4th XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Jeremy Balbin

Firstly, I would like to give much thanks to the committee, lead by Jeff Israel, for giving me the opportunity to captain the 4th XI team this year. The appointment of a 19 year old as captain is a real indication of the direction the club is going, with youth set to take the club to success in the coming years. I have received outstanding support from many of the guys at the club including the coaches, Steve Sandor, Joey Silver and Mark Simon who were all available for help when needed, and the other senior captains, Dave, Paul, Jeff and Ian who always were there to give support. Huge thanks must be given to Simon Fisher for the many hours and text messages he has put in for the club. Friday nights and Saturday mornings will not feel the same in the offseason without at least a few phone call or SMS exchanges with Simon. It has been a tough season for the Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club, with no teams making finals. The 4th XI felt the brunt of this, generally only having youngsters available to play, with 1 or 2 older player each week. Good team efforts were hard to come by throughout the year, resulting in no wins. However, many young players showed great signs for the future with promising individual performances. The solid performers throughout the season were myself, who lead the batting with 256 runs and the bowling with 16 wickets, Jason Stone who showed grit with the bat all year and flare and cunning with the ball. Youngsters Daniel Sneider and Steven Lustig also had good seasons with ball and bat respectively, with Daniel showing great promise with the ball and Steven showing great determination with the bat. Individual Highlights Include:

Jared Abrahams and Jordan Klotnick’s partnership of 53, with Jared finishing on 33* and Jordan finishing on 40, against Middle Park.

Jeremy Balbin’s 5/40 and 30 with the bat against Port Melbourne in what was our closest match of the season.

The excellent, gritty father-son partnership between Steven (27) and Danny Lustig (28) for 45 runs which included Steven batting for 55 overs.

Page 26

Joel Beebe’s 5/41 and the exciting and fast 50 run partnership between Alan Sheffield (30) and Jeremy Balbin (31) against Cheltenham.

Stuart Fayman’s lone hand of 33 against Cheltenham. Jeremy Balbin’s determined 45 out of a total of 81, nearly batting out the

innings. Hilton Kahlberg’s fast paced 21 and 28 against Port Melbourne, showing

excellent stroke play and class.

Even though it has been a tough and disappointing season, the experience gained by the players has been invaluable. I would like to thank all of the players who played in the 4th XI this year.

You have made playing for the club a pleasure and I hope to one day play with you all in higher grades. The future is bright for the club and I believe success is right around the corner.

5th XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Ian Jones The Fifths had a disappointing season in terms of results and the bottom ladder position; however I am pleased that several junior players developed over the season. A fair analysis of the season was that we were one of the weaker sides in MCA Sunday competition, although we were unfortunate to have suffered from bad weather when playing sides of similar strength. Several times the team bowled well to have the opposition out for less than 150, but our batting was unable to make a winning score. As one of our senior players says “We have to stop showing po-tential and start winning”! Despite some good individual performances, no player exceeded 200 runs or took more than 20 wickets, which shows the lack of individual consistency that impacted on our results. Our two wins against Parkville and Canterbury were highlights, with the combination of good batting and bowling easily defeating the opposition. We can claim a moral victory against Thornbury, when bad weather caused no play on the second day with Thornbury 9 for 92 and still 40 runs in arrears. The “return game” against Parkville was entertaining and exciting, but unfortunately we fell four runs short in a one day game. The outstanding performers for the Fifths were Benji Jones and Nathan Rothschild who led the aggregates in both the batting and bowling. Strong support was provided by Nathan Joel, who regularly contributed as an opening bat, and Laurie Shneider, whose accurate bowling often stifled the best of the opposition’s batsmen. Unfortunately, Yossi Herbst suffered a bad hamstring injury and we missed his accurate fast bowling for crucial games. Several juniors had the opportunity to play in the Fifths, with Aaron Fetter and Joshua Jones having some impressive performances. The individual highlights included:

• Laurie Shneider’s 4 for 4 (16 overs, 13 maidens) in the second innings against South Yarra – after 3 for 21 off 11 overs in the first innings

• Nathan Rothschild’s 3 for 2 against Thornbury and 45 against Canterbury • Benji Jones 50 (retired) against Canterbury and 3 for 21 against Parkville

• Cameo performances from “one gamers”, including Justin Kramersh making 46 against National, Brad Abrahams with 55 and 2 for 10 against Parkville, and Ben Fisher with 47 against Parkville

• Nathan Joel making three scores over 30 as the regular opening bat • Yossi Herbst taking 4 for 42 against South Yarra • Aaron Fetter showing promise with consecutive scores of 25 and 20 against

Parkville and Coles Sharks • Joshua Jones making 38 not out and taking 3 for 11 against South Yarra • Eli Lipshatz taking 3 for 13 against Canterbury • Daniel Wein making 18 and taking 2 for 33 against Coles Sharks • Gabe Back and Jacob Jones showing courage and determination when batting

against Coles Sharks I would like to thank the team members for their efforts throughout the season, and I look forward to better results from each of them next season. The MACC players from other teams regularly came to watch us, with special thanks to our “no. 1 ticketholder”, Mark Soffer, for his support, including taking the field at short notice! I express my appreciation to Simon Fisher for all his phone calls (especially prior to Shabbat!) and efforts in ensuring that the Fifths had a full team each game. Thanks also to the selection committee for some lively debate, and for listening to my opinionated views. Also, I need to thank the MACC committee for taking the risk in appointing me captain. Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Alison, and my daughter, Leah, for their efforts in supporting the Fifths by scoring and providing afternoon teas. At the risk of being self-indulgent, my personal highlight of the season was when Jacob came on as twelfth man against Canterbury; there were five Joneses on the ground, and that’s the reason I came out of retirement to continue playing the wonderful and challenging game of cricket.

JUNIOR CLUB REPORT – Mark Shapiro, President

I am pleased to say the Junior club had another successful season. We only managed one premiership but more importantly in excess of 200 young Jewish boys took to the ovals and enjoyed the season and once again my personal highlight was when the first ball was bowled and we had 13 teams of enthusiastic kids representing our club on various ovals in the district.

I am also very pleased to report that after a two year absence we once again provided a Milo in2cricket program for 5-8 year olds. Not only did we provide the program but I believe we provided one of the best Milo programs in the district. This was due to the efforts of the outstanding co-ordinators Richard Lustig and David Treger. These guys tired me out with their enthusiasm but they have certainly laid the foundations for under age cricket in our club. Thank you guys.

On the field, the U13 Chargers won the premiership with the U13 Panthers and U13 Force both finishing runners up in their respective leagues. The U11 Falcons were extremely competitive in the U11 comp, narrowly missing out on a flag. The U15’s and U17’s both suffered disappointing losses in semi finals which were there for the taking. All in all, a successful season.

As I say every year, our aim is to be competitive but at the same time attempt to give everyone a fair go. This mission still continues to challenge us due to the nature of cricket and the fact that we play in ungraded leagues in age groups with two year windows.

We had fantastic support from the Glen Eira Council as far as training and playing facilities were concerned for which I thank them . As far as Caulfield Park is concerned I am sure you all agree that it is absolutely magnificent and a facility we can all be very proud of.

The junior and senior clubs continued a fantastic mutual relationship whereby they provided great opportunities for our keen players and in turn we assisted them in filling their teams and also making significant contributions in what was a difficult season for them. Mark Shapiro President MAJCC
