Highlights in 2018-2019:

International Agreements and Collaborations:

Launched a new Non-Thesis program in the field of Applied Public Policy together with the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Highly innovative program offering classes on policy evaluation and implementation and hands on experience in policymaking and design. This is the first MSc PPOL program in Turkey with this content combination. We envisage strong potential for KU scholars and graduate students to collaborate with Strathclyde’s relevant centers (European Policies Research Centre, Strathclyde’s Energy Center).

Completed the second year in Global Minds Joint Degree Psychology MA program (http://globalminds.eu/). We received the second installment of €30.000 (A total of €90.000 over a 3-year period). KU ranked the best performing university in the student satisfaction survey among all partners; University of Oslo, University of Limerick, ISCTE Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and University of Social Sciences and Humanities Warsaw.

Signed a graduate exchange agreement with Cornell University for and on behalf of Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, Cornell Institute for European Studies. In talks to establish 3 new joint degree agreements at the Ph.D. level: Two programs with the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands in the fields of

Sociology and Political Science. We met with the academic and administrative management in Amsterdam in April 2019 to negotiate the terms of the agreements.

One program with the University of Antwerp, Belgium in the field of Visual Studies. The protocol is currently under review at the University of Antwerp.

Hosted the first visiting graduate students from Cornell University under the auspices of the Institute of Turkish Studies (ITS)- Koç Holding Scholarship Program, a line of research awards affiliated with Koç University for US scholars engaged in Turkish and Ottoman studies in the social sciences and the humanities. Two new visiting students are expected to arrive in Fall 2019.

AR-VR Certificate Program to launch in Fall 2019; A certificate program designed with the partnership of KU units (MAVA, ARHA, Medical school, ANAMED, VEKAM) and non-KU organizations (University of Southern California, Anima, Arter, Timelooper VR Production Company). The target population is the participants from (1) media and movie industry; (2) healthcare industry; (3) automotive industry, and (3) arts organizations and museums. 2 million TL funding is secured from İstanbul Kalkınma Ajansı (ISTKA) to fund the equipment required for this program.

Fund-Generating Programs:

Currently there are three ongoing and two new fund-generating programs. We continue to promote them during GSSSH information sessions, on our website, across social media platforms, and through faculty networks.

LLM Program in Public and Private Law: Tuition is charged for the MA program in Law (Since Fall 2013).

Global Minds: Joint Degree MA program in Psychology. Incoming grant through Erasmus + (Since Fall 2017).

DTES- Non-Thesis MA program: Tuition fee covers 6 months in ELC plus one year in the applied program. (Since Fall 2018).

Applied Public Policy: Joint Degree Non-Thesis MSc program with the University of Strathclyde (Will be initiated in Fall 2019).

AR-VR Certificate Program: Will be initiated in Fall 2019.

Social Media Presence and In-House Information Flow:

Enhanced GSSSH social media visibility across LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. We have been more effectively using social media channels to introduce graduate students, publishing posts on their publications and awards, as well as announcing their job placements.

Created basic profiles on our website for current Ph.D. students. Helped create a platform within KUSIS to track graduate student progress (research tracking)

in collaboration with the IT department. This platform will enable students (and later graduate program coordinators) to actively track the deadlines for and students’ accomplishment of program milestones.

The 7th Annual KU ARHA Graduate Symposium. ARHA Graduate students organized the Timelessness symposium, which brought together students of archaeology, art history, history, cultural heritage, museum studies and related fields. The participants presented their research on Anatolia and its neighboring regions, including the Mediterranean, Aegean, Black Sea, Balkans, the Levant and the Ancient Near East, from earliest prehistoric times through the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Classical, Byzantine and Ottoman periods, and into contemporary times.

Dr. Lale Babaoğlu Balkış from Boğaziçi University Department of History gave the Keynote speech.

Common Space Talk Series.Sociology Ph.D. Students initiated the series bringing together faculty members and graduate students from various disciplines. Interdisciplinary topics discussed in the talk series range from but not limited to; Art, Cinema, Culture, Genders, Ethics, Philosophy, Sociology, Literature and it is open to all graduate students and faculty members.

2.2. Activities to Enhance Institutional Integration

Organized periodic meetings with graduate students to identify and address student issues and needs.

Supported department-level meetings with graduate students for the same purpose.

Addressing student demands for space allocated to graduate students, we have designed and opened to student use two common rooms:

SOS 233- Common Space: The room is open to everyone for gatherings, studying, organizing events, conversations and discussions. It prioritizes the culture of collectivity. The Common Place is 7/24 available for all who aims to think and produce collectively.

SOS Z33- MA Study Area: The room has been re-modeled with the support of the Construction Office and has been opened to the use of MA students.

Addressing student demand for clarified flow of information, we have collaborated with the IT department in building a platform within KUSIS to track graduate student progress. This platform will enable students to actively track the deadlines for and their accomplishment of program milestones such as appointing of an advisor; completion of course requirements; passing the qualifying exams; completing the thesis / dissertation proposal defense; conducting the periodic thesis / dissertation meetings and finalizing their defense. The system will also provide information to students about YÖK deadlines and dismissal conditions. It will become operational in stages, starting in May 2019.

Initiated GSSSH social media presence across various platforms, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and initiated webpages for student profiles across Ph.D. programs. Through these channels, we have been effectively promoting graduate student achievements, including awards, publications and job placements. These efforts contribute to the broader visibility of the GSSSH and the achievements of its student body.
