4. Last date for withdrawals is Tuesday 1st September 2009.

NEW RESOLUTIONS OF THE MANAGING COMMITTEE

1. Resolved that Amounts that can be invested in Mutual Funds be increased from the current 10% to 50% of the Investments. The Investments are to

be monitored by a professional body appointed by the General Body who will lay down a financial policy to be followed.

Justification: The return on Investments right now is sufficient to meet the current need. Inflation is not catered to. If we are to pay out amounts and

still maintain corpus which caters to inflation then the return on Investments needs to be higher than the current Bank rate of return. With a professional

body to help, returns could be better.

2. "Resolved that the Old Boys Association of St. Joseph's Boys High School be permitted to work along with the Parent Teachers Association of the

School in collecting funds towards Scholarships for Students of the School, Staff Medical Insurance Fund for Serving and Retired staff, Staff Welfare

Activities as well as an other school Matters".

Justification: As both bodies work for a common goal which is the school it was felt that it would be beneficial to both if they worked together.

3. Resolved that the Life Membership Fee be increased from the current Rs.500 to Rs.1,000 per head. The Patron Membership be increased from the

current Rs.3,000 to Rs.5,000. The charges of the 10th Std joining would not change from the existing Rs.250 per head.

On the 30th of August, 2008 the OBA with the help of Greg de Nazareth, the staff and parents conducted an Exhibition cum Seminar on “Climate Change

and what we must do about it.” The Seminar was for Students of Std 9 to 12 and their parents. Dr. Yellappa Reddy Secretary Environment Govt of

Karnataka and Dr. Rajeev Gowda Prof. IIM Bangalore were the two speakers for the seminar. The seminar was preceded by students and their parents

visiting the exhibition stalls to acquaint themselves on practical ways on how they could mitigate the problems of climate change. Stalls we put up by

different agencies including the forest department.

On Friday 5th September, 2008. the Sesquicentennial celebrations kicked off with Sports held for Old boys/ The event was organised by A. Franklin and

assisted by Michael Bakes and Prakash Alvarez. Greg D’Sa was the announcer. The Sports started with the March Past of Houses with Widdy as Chief

Guest. He took the salute of all the Houses.

In the evening we had a reunion of the batches and launch of the book ”Faith and Toil”, an illustrated 350 page, hard bound history of the School

authored by Christopher Rego. This venture was sponsored by his batch, the Class of 1976. The function started with a short note from Rev. Fr. Hedwig

Da Costa followed by a Power Point Presentation from Christopher Rego and then the release of the book by Rahul Dravid. The first book was auctioned

after being autographed by Rahul Dravid, Christopher Rego and Rev. Fr. Hedwig Da Costa. Mr. Maurice de P. Rebello was the highest bidder, bidding

School Song by all the Old Boys present.

After a hectic Saturday a number of Old Boys were present at 7.15am in the morning for Holy Mass con-celebrated by Old Boys and Past Principals, Fr.

Hedwig Da Costa being the main celebrant. Mass was followed by placing of the wreath at the war memorial by Fr. Principal and the school band

playing the last retreat and Abide with me. After the placing of the wreath we had unfurling of the school flag by Mr. Hugo D’Souza the Oldest Old Boy

present. Singing of the school song was led by Fr. Simon Furtardo. Breakfast followed, were we had over 500 Old Boys present. Ivan Yates was once

again the undisputable champion with 14 eggs and 16 sausages not counting the cheese, chicken salami, bread and coffee.

the music, the MC, the food, and the ambience was appreciated by all.

Many Old Boys came back and thanked the committee for the three days of festivities which they said was very well organised and those Old boys

who missed the functions really missed something.

Christmas Hampers sponsored by Pramodh were distributed to Senior Old Boys as is done every year. The Christmas function went off as usual this

year. We had Santa Claus, a Christmas Tree, gifts for children and a sumptuous dinner organised by Zaki Khaleeli. Fabian White who is an Old Boy

provided the music.

teachers. Sumir Hinduja the Brain behind the Insurance Scheme is still supporting us but we need a lot more Old Boys to chip in and take the corpus

past a Crore to be able to continue paying the premiums.

The OBA acknowledges the contribution of Dominic D’Cruz in preparing a CD to be used for Club Swinging. The CD has been sent to OBA New Zealand

to be used by them for Club Swinging in their annual Get-together. Aldon Hartley (nephew of Papa Yates) is teaching the Old Boys in NewZealand the

Club Swinging exercises.

The OBA also undertook rebuilding the Old Grotto. This was sponsored entirely by the Batch of 1975. Thank You Batch of 1975. Thank You Batch of 1985

for the Career Guidance counselling you conducted for the 10th Std. We also thank the Batch of 1998 who sponsored Lunch and Breakfast on Old Boys

Report from OBA New Zealand

We have 22 old boys on our list, with 17 of these living in Auckland. The oldest is Peter Rimmer (batch of 1943) who saw our

advertisement in the local paper last year and contacted us. He is 82 and just couldn’t believe something like this existed here as he

had not been in touch with the school since he left St. Joseph’s. We make it a point to meet twice a year on the Feast of St Joseph’s

and Old Boys Day either out doors at one of the regional parks or in someone’s house.

We had the pleasure of a two hour get together early February when Rahul Dravid visited Auckland on the recent victorious

Indian tour of New Zealand. Two of his class mates Rohit Walter Rao and Andre Rodrigues (batch of 1989) are here and

organised this with eight of us gathering. The dinner concluded with all of us singing the school song with gusto.

We will be meeting again on Sunday the 6th of September for Old Boys Day. The highlight this time will be a club swinging display

(with real clubs fashioned on a lathe machine) by Aldon Hartley (1969), Llewellyn Menezes (1973) and myself. It will be complete

to the last detail of papering the clubs with the blue and white and the silver ribbon. Practice started last Saturday and most

exercises were easy to recall. It was the order and the switching which made us wonder how did we do it whilst we were in school?

Mr. Yates surely and gently drilled it into us! A big thank you to Dominic D’Cruz, Glen Hartley, Christopher Rego and Brian

D’Lima for organizing and sending the music on CD and the order of exercises well in advance.

To the OBA Committee, the Jesuit Fathers and Old Boys, we wish Old Boys Day in Bangalore all success. As we are 6 hours ahead

of you, we will be present in spirit.

the heart of Bangalore City. The bid as won over some of the biggest developers in the country for a 267 room top end luxury hotel with an

investment of over USD 125 million.

The Making of "Faith & Toil" - The History of St. Joseph's Boys' High School

On September 6, 2008, to commemorate its Sesquicentennial Year (150 years,) the Old Boys' Association of the St. Joseph's Boys' High School released a book

tracing the one hundred and fifty year history of SJBHS, entitled Faith & Toil. The book, written by Lt. Col. Christopher Rego (Class of '76), is the first ever

comprehensive compilation of the history of the St. Joseph's Boys' High School since its inception in 1858. It even delves into the background of how and why

the school was set up.

Rahul Dravid was the Chief Guest at the function. The first book, autographed by him, was auctioned for Rs. One lakh and bought by Maurice de P. Rebello.

Contributions realized from the book are earmarked for various development schemes for the benefit of students and teachers of the school.

A beautifully designed and printed book, Faith & Toil is a 350 page, hard-bound publication, illustrated with cartoons by Mario Miranda and Paul Fernandes.

They render lighter visualizations of some iconic personalities and funny, peculiar situations described in the book. Ryan Lobo, old boy and National Geographic

photographer generously gave of his time and took hundreds of pictures of the school, its students, teachers, and surroundings. Cletus Rebello, another

Josephite, contributed many of his pictures of the old school buildings, their demolition and re-construction.

While much of the material for the book is culled from exhaustive reading of the treasure trove of School Annuals from 1910 till to present day, the author has

had access to the original records provided by the MEP Fathers at Bangalore. Fr. Legrand and Fr. Cornu at St. Peter's Seminary facilitated access to the French

archives of the Paris Foreign Missions, the order that founded the School. The Karnataka State archives at the Vidhana Soudha provided a valuable file dating

back to the 1880s, with correspondence between the Principal and the colonial authorities.

Drafts of the book were critically vetted by the venerable Mr Alec Alvarez, despite his advancing years, Fr. Hedwig da Costa, Mr Augustine D'souza and Mr

Nandan Kamath. Some former Principals of the school, Old boys and former teachers have given valuable inputs for the book.

Some very rare pictures have been resurrected after extensive research by the author and presented to the reader. These pictures have been carefully

worked upon to ensure authentic reproduction, while enhancing their clarity. Many of these now line the corridors of the new school building.

Just two months before the book was due for release, the author met with an accident that left him seriously injured and hospitalized. Despite the agony and

pain, Christopher completed the book, selected from hundreds of pictures, and monitored the proofs and final printing of the book from his hospital bed. This

is a truly dedicated effort from this third generation Old Boy of the school, deserving an ovation.

The entire cost of publication has been contributed for by the Class of 1976. Students from across the globe pitched in to ensure that all Old Boys, Teachers,

Present students and all well-wishers of the school would benefit from this very important work. The following '76 ers made significant contributions for the

book: Luis Miranda, Frederick Soanes, Vivek Bhaktaram, Ramkumar Rajarathnam, Anil Ferris, Mohan Rangan, Prem Thomas, Venkatesh Sampath, Colin Lobo,

Mohsin Menon, Shiv Baloo, Ivan Rodrigues, Madhukar Hiregange, Narendra Kudva and Janardhan Padmanabhan. The author himself freely gave of his time,

money and effort and waived reimbursement of considerable expenses incurred by him in his year long research. Besides, he handed over the copyright to

the OBA thereby ensuring that they receive the entire proceeds from the book.

Incidentally, donations received have helped fund a documentary film on the School commissioned by the Principal. Once again, Chris Rego contributed time

and effort to shape this documentary (sponsored by the Class of 1976) that is expected to be released by September 2009.

The entire OBA Managing Committee, led by its President A.G. Krishnaswamy, placed its weight behind the book project and with the enthusiastic support of

the Secretary, Brian D'lima, and the rest of the members, Faith & Toil saw the light of the day.

Never The Twain Shall Meet?

When I heard that Lt. Col. Chris Rego was researching a book on St. Joseph's Boys' High School, Bangalore I was all ears. Having

written a book on the alumni of Bishop Cotton Boys' School, Bangalore I could relate to the enormity of the effort and the thrill of the

endeavour, particularly in the sesquicentennial year of the school. It got me thinking about the relationship between these two great

schools, their commonalities and, of course, the inter-se rivalry which is legendary.

Both schools have tacitly thrived on the spirit of rivalry 'on and off the field', to borrow an oft-repeated cricketing phrase. But surely it is the

on-field rivalry that drives the Eton-Harrowesque legend. Those old boys who have had the pleasure (and, at times, the pain) of playing the

ol' rival in cricket, hockey or football will endorse the unparalleled experience of representing one's school in the ultimate battle. While

playing for school is always a matter of pride, somehow the stakes are always higher taking on Joseph's, or Cotton's, as the case may be.

And it is this diet of intense competition - mostly fair and a few times bordering on hysterical animosity - that has not only inspired some

great performances from both schools, but, ironically also forged some unique friendships. In that sense, the core object of schooling,

namely, to build character, passion and fraternity, has been accentuated by the Cotton's-Joseph's interface.

While there is no love lost between the two schools, there is common ground as well. For instance, boys from Joseph's come across to

Cotton's for their ISC on a regular basis (though recently ISC has come to be introduced in Joseph's and this trend may have changed).

And it is quite common for one to find an Old Boy of one these schools, perhaps on feeling that his alma mater isn't as enchanting as his

days in school, choosing to put his son in the other school out of a sense of affinity and respect for the old rival. Or, again, of parents

'distributing' their sons between the two schools and hedging their risks. Or, then again, of boys migrating to the other school for various

reasons. One such interesting example is that of Air Marshal Trevor Osman, former Vice-Chief of the Air Staff, who started off in Cotton's

and was shifted to Joseph's by his mum, who felt that there was far too much emphasis on sport and not enough on academics. It is

another matter that at Joseph's, Air Marshal Osman continued his sporting pursuits to the fullest as the authorities found in him great

sporting talent! The loss was ours! (One also finds Cottonians' sisters & daughters marrying Josephites and vice versa. Here, one

accepts the other as family, albeit reluctantly!)

Founded seven years apart, both schools have seen a transition from British leadership to a more Indianised style of functioning, though

many quaint British traditions remain to this day. Cotton's draws inspiration from the English public school Rugby - of Tom Brown's

School Days fame (and also where Webb Ellis, as a student, picked up a ball and ran across the football field and thereby invented the

sport of rugby) - where Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton himself was a warden before moving to India and becoming the Bishop of

Calcutta and founding Cathedral's, Mumbai. Joseph's commenced under the supervision of French priests and switched to a Jesuit

command and has continued in the watertight regimen of the Catholic Church, though changing part of its name from 'European High

School' to "Boys' High School" in the 1960's. Through a chequered history, both schools have seen their zeniths and nadirs, at times even

being faced with the threat of imminent closure. But, the history of these schools also reveals the lives of extraordinary individuals who

have steered their destinies through choppy waters to magnificent heights, be it as wardens, principals, teachers or advisors. May their

tribe increase!

Both schools have a rich treasure of alumni that have achieved scorching success in public life, particularly in sport in the case of Joseph's

and the armed forces in the case of Cotton's. Indeed, Joseph's has the enviable distinction of producing over a dozen Olympians who have

represented India, Australia and Great Britain in hockey as well as swimming and badminton, apart, of course, from three cricketers to have

represented India. Cotton's, per contra, boasts of over a dozen Generals, Air Marshals and Admirals, including three Chiefs-of-Staff, one of

whom commanded the British Army. More significantly, both schools have seen many of their alumni make the supreme sacrifice in the

defence of the nation and have earned gallantry awards that do us proud. Between Cotton's and Joseph's, we can boast of a Victoria Cross

(Lt. William 'Leefe' Robinson, World War I, OC), a Maha Vir Chakra (Brig. Desmond Hayde, Indo-Pak War 1965, OJ) and two Vir Chakras

(Admiral V. S. Shekhawat, Indo-Pak War 1971 and Col. Lalit Rai, Kargil 1999, OCs) apart from numerous Military Crosses, Distinguished

Service Orders and Distinguished Flying Crosses. In fact, many of these boys fought together in combat!

Both share an embarrassment of riches when it comes to high achievers in business, science, academia, civil, foreign and police

service, law, art and music, social service and (yes, even) politics. But while we pay tribute to the accomplishments of these stellar

individuals, let us not forget those who have passed us by, and at times, passed us by too soon. Let's remember our Capt. Sylvester

Ratnams (Capt. Sylvester, OJ, 21 Jat, died at the age of 29, most bravely, in combat at Kupwara in 2002,) and our Pankaj Sadhus (Pankaj,

OC, a fine and inspiring all-rounder, died at the age of 27 in a car accident in Delhi in 2002). Let's remember our David Chatterjees ('Chat',

Biology and Chemistry master at SJBHS for over 32 years, killed by a speeding car ironically outside his beloved school) and our Hannah

Sebastians ('Sebo', history teacher and Pakenham-Walsh House mistress who taught for over 36 years at BCBS). They are the ones who

make the tapestry of our schools truly special.

While the leg-pulling will never end, and a Cottonian and a Josephite will

never cease to debate the irresolvable issue of which is the better school

(though some objective yardsticks have been invented over the years, such

as the winner of the Cottonian Shield or Centenary Shield being the de facto

monarch), there is a deeper issue that confronts us as alumni of these schools

today. For a long period of time, Bangalore-parents preferred to admit their

wards to either of these schools (with no offence meant to my friends from

the other very fine schools in the city). However, the paradigm has changed

with the emergence of 'international' schools, and today public schools face

a common threat, in terms of shortage of faculty and resources, and in terms

of their credibility as institutions that can deliver in rapidly changing milieu. It is no longer a matter of Cotton's versus Joseph's, but,

Cotton's and Joseph's versus the new-age challenger. While there can be no dispute with the need to modernize, there is a pressing

need to reiterate and reinforce the value-systems that make public schools unique. And this is where we the alumni of such schools fit

in. While our schools will be judged by our collective accomplishments, we will be judged by how much we give back to our schools.

Therefore, we need to find concrete common ground to preserve the legacy our precious schools, lest they become a thing of the past

and all that remains are the cobwebs of our fuzzy memory. It is in this context that Old Boys such as Chris stand tall for their selfless and

significant contribution in keeping the spirit of the ol' school well and truly alive. On my part, on behalf of the Working Committee of the

General K. S. Thimayya Memorial Lecture series (an Old Cottonian endeavour), I cordially invite all Old Josephites to attend our annual

lectures and fellowship.

Finally, I warmly congratulate St. Joseph's Boys' High School, Bangalore and all its Old Boys on achieving this momentous landmark of

a glorious 150 years, and wish them Godspeed.

FABIAN CORREIA’S SESQUICENTENNIAL SPEECH

St Josephs Boys School Bangalore September 2008

The most important function of education at any level is to develop the personality of the individual, and the significance of his life, to himself and to

others. This is the basic architecture of a life at St Josephs!

St. Joseph’s in synergy with the St. Jesuit fathers Group celebrate 150 Years of Molding Lives! Goals set at school give the specific direction

to make our dreams come true! The rest is ornamentation and decoration, of the structure that Fr Eugene Jacques and my teachers have

molded, that I am today!

Rev. Fathers, My cherished Classmates and the OBA,

It is an honor, to be invited, to address such a distinguished assemblage of ex- students at these sequential celebrations. If IQ could be converted into

kilowatts, I have no doubt, that the quantum massed here tonight, would meet the world’s energy requirements, for at least a century.

It is a rare privilege, to celebrate the Sequecentenial landmark, of St. Joseph’s European High school now St Josephs Boys High school. I would like

to congratulate all the Jesuit fathers, and teachers for our accomplishments. For me personally, it is a great honor to share this unique event with you

and I am very glad to participate in the prestigious events organized on this occasion.

In 1959, I came to Bangalore from Kenya, for the first time in my life and entered St Josephs European High school under the umbrella of Fr Eugene

Jacques. It was an experience, that I will never forget. By a quirk of nature, although I was born right-handed, I had the good fortune to come into this

world left-footed. Soccer players who could kick with their left foot were very rare in those days. This meant that I was able to make the Soccer team

as a left forward. I then, was fortunate to develop my hockey skills to represent the school team from 1960 -1963 surrounded by most talented school

players in Bangalore.

I found my prowess in Athletics, and excelled leaving glorious memories of school landmarks at all levels of athletic competitions .We were a

distinguished unbeatable and decorated team in Hockey, Football and Athletes winning and setting a very high bench mark with Stalwarts in Vece

Paes, Ashok Raman, Nabeel Thomas and Rui Saldanha - We turned to be an undefeated team, and also had the distinction of all, being the best in our

era. To this day, I am convinced that I owe all this To Fr Jacques, who gave me encouragement, and to carry these talents, to university and national

sports levels. I was selected to represent the Canadian Sports Federation for Amateur Sports in the 90s.

I can tell you, that I had many a sleepless night during that first year at St Josephs and when sleep came, it was often accompanied by a dream

(nightmare might be more accurate) missing my home life in Mombasa, Kenya.

Quality education, at all levels is, and has been, critically important for all the Jesuit fathers at St Josephs, at all times. I completed my Cambridge and

High school certificate Examinations in 1963.

Friends, when you are growing as a young person, in a student’s life, you have to acquire a unique trait, of righteousness in the heart. In Indian

language it is called Dharma. This Righteousness in my heart was built by Fr Jacques and teachers of St. Josephs European High School. The

students’ life is very important. With righteousness in the heart we developed and evolved beauty, in the character. The beauty in the character, in a

young person, brings harmony, in the home, to the joy of the parents. Harmony at St Josephs, in the home, propagates to the society and the nation.

The Classroom – not the trench-is the frontier of freedom now and forever more.

With these words let me once again; greet the Fathers, teachers, my classmates and O.B.A members of St. Josephs during the sequential celebrations.

My best wishes to all the members, of St. Josephs Boys High School success, in their mission, of promoting value-based education among the youth.

God Bless You!

Fabian F Correia BA (Hons. Eco), CCP, PMP.

AUDITOR’S REPORT

We have examined the attached Balance sheet of Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society A/c St. Joseph’s Boys High School Old Boys

Association, Bangalore as at March 31, 2009 and the Income and Expenditure Account for the year ended on that date, annexed thereto.

These financial statements are the responsibility of the institution’s management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these

financial statements based on our audit.

We have conducted the audit in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in India. Those standards require that we plan

and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material mistakes. An audit

includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosers in the financial statements. An audit also includes

assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by the management, as well as evaluating the overall financial

statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion.

We report that:

a) We have obtained all the information and explanation which, to the best of our knowledge and belief, were necessary for the

purpose of our audit.

b) In our opinion proper books of accounts have been kept so far as it appears from our examination of the books.

c) The Balance Sheet and Income and Expenditure accounts dealt with by this report are in agreement with the Books of Accounts.

In our opinion and to the best of our information and explanation given to us, the said Balance Sheet and Income Expenditure account

gives a true and fair view in conformity with the accounting principles generally accepted in India:

1. In the case of the Balance Sheet, of the state of affairs as at March 31, 2009.

2. In the case of Income and Expenditure account, the excess of Income over Expenditure for the year ended on that

date.
