2.3 Soil type/s S. No Soil type Characteristics Area in ha

1 Black soils The shallow and medium black soils are grey to deep black in colour (mostly pellustert) clay to clay loam in texture. They contain lime nodules and the base saturation is high with medium to high water retaining capacity. The Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) is fairly high ranging from 50-70 me/100g. The silica sesquioxide ratio (SiO2/R202) is around 3.5

60%

2 Gravelly red soils Light textured soils having low organic carbon content and low to medium, phosphorus and potash status. They contain low water retention capacity. Soils are grouped in alfisols.

30%

3 Alluvial soils These soils are formed due to transportation and deposition through river water on the river banks. In texture, they vary from drift sand to loam and stiff clay. There is no marked differentiation in the horizons and the profiles are often characterized by the absence of stratification. The colour of these soils is generally gray. They are neutral to alkaline in reaction, moderate to high in CEC and bases. They are found on the banks of Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers in this zone.

Title: TS-3R and BSMR-736 promising pigeonpea varieties for rainfed and irrigated conditions respectively: A case study

Background: Prior to the popularisation of TS-3R variety of pigeonpea, farmers of Raichur district

were growing local varieties like Gulyal local and old variety i.e., Maruti which were susceptible to diseases and matures in 170-180 days there by farmers need to spray 3-4 times for pest control. The yield level of these varieties were in decreasing trend over the years besides farmers used to grow these varieties in irrigated condition there by not realising higher yield.

Interventions:

Process: In collaboration with seed unit KVK, Raichur of UASR started popularisation of new pigeonpea variety TS-3R, which matures in 150-160 days, resistant to the sterility disease and well suited for medium black soils. KVK, Raichur also popularising BSMR-736 variety under protective irrigation since from last year and took demo on 16 acres of farmers field

Technology: KVK, Raichur scientists made the efforts on integrated crop management in pigeonpea through on & off campus trainings, group meetings, news paper coverage, radio talks, TV programmes etc.on techniques like seed treatment with CaCl2, trichoderma, biofertilizers i.e., rhizobium and PSB, maintaining optimum plant population, nipping, moisture conservation techniques, integrated pest management etc.

Impact:

Horizontal Spread: Farmers of rainfed areas were advised to choose TS-3R and protective irrigated areas were BSMR-736 variety for sowing in Raichur district. . During the year 2010-11 1347 acres and 678 acres of area brought under the cultivation of variety TS-3R and BSMR-736 in rainfed and irrigated conditions respectively. Balanced application of nutrients use of biofertilizers helped in avoiding over exploitation of soil Economic gains : Average net profit after adoption of integrated crop management practices increased to the tune of Rs. 18705/ acre with the variety TS-3R under rainfed condition and Rs. 42080/acre with the variety BSMR-736 under irrigated conditions. Reduction in the cost of pesticides by around Rs. 850/acre

Details of impact analysis of KVK activities carried out during the reporting period Establishment of Sheep stall feeding farm (Lamb fattening) Background: Sri Imtiyaz who hails from yaramarus of Raichur Tal. Raichur District has got 5 acres

of dry land and earlier mainly involved in dry land agriculture. During January 2010 he visited our KVK to discuss about Sheep stall feed farming (Lamb fattening) as a subsidiary activity to get a constant income throughout the year. He wanted to start this enterprise initially with 50 unit size and further he wanted to increase the size for which he sought KVK’s help to establish the sheep shed, preparation of sheep feed and health coverage of sheep farm. After getting encouragement from KVK he wanted to take sheep rearing enterprise as major occupation for his livelihood.

Intervention:

a) Process: To construct the sheep shed with locally available material KVK’s scientists provided technical advice.

b) Technology: 1. Technical guidance to sheep manage mental practices and feeding schedule.

2. Home scale preparation of sheep feed using low cost ingredients 3. Health coverage of sheep with regular vaccination and deworming schedule. 4. Technical guidance for fodder cultivation.

Impact: a) Horizontal spread: After observing successful establishment of broiler sheep farming,

6 farmers in around Raichur have shown keen interest to take up this occupation. b) Economic growth before intervention his annual income was Rs.75000/- with net

Profit Rs.50000/-. After intervention he solely involved in Sheep stall feeding farm (Lamb fattening) with Annual income of Rs.7 lakhs (by sale of 100 lambs) and net profit of Rs. 4 lakhs. Hence he achieved financial stability for his livelihood.

Annual Review Report 2010-11

IPM in Chilli : A success story Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) commonly known as red pepper is an important and indispensable

condiment as well as vegetable grown in many parts of the world. It is estimated that, a total of 51 insect pests and mite species have been recorded on chilli. Among them, sucking pests viz., thrips, mites,Spodoptera and fruite borer are the major insect pests. Apart from insect pests, diseases viz., dieback, leaf spot, wilt and powdery mildew are thw major limiting factors in chilli production. To combat insect pests and diseases farmers are solely dependent on pesticides. In North Karnataka, farmers take up nearly 18-26 rounds of chemical sprays of different combination of pesticides. Therefore, the cost of cultivation of chilli under irrigated situation increases enormously making this crop cultivation highly risky to environment and also non-profitable to growers.

In this context,Front Line Demonstration on Chilli IPM was conducted during 2010-11 in farmers fields by using Guntur chilli in comparison with Farmers Practice. Adoptable IPM module developed at UAS, Raichur demonstrated over an area of 15 Acres at Jakkaldinni village of Manvi taluk. 15 beneficieries were selected based on their socio economic status and inputs viz., biofungicides, vermicompost, pesticides and biorationals were supplied to individual beneficiers. The demonstration fields were visited once in every week to know the crop condition and also to monitor pest population. Accordingly the field visits were made during which farmers were taken to fields and made to identify pests, their stages, incidence levels, nature of damage and their natural enemies.

Chemical interventions were made based on economic threshold levels. Observations were recorded on weekly interval basis on incidence of various pests were made on 25 plants in each plot. The insecticidal applications were made on the basis of incidence levels of both sucking pests and borers. Agronomic practices were followed as per UAS recommended package of practices except plant protection in IPM and farmers practice plot.

The adopted IPM schedule is as follows. 1. Application of FYM @ 25 t/ha. 2. Application of neem cake @ 2.5 q/ha - after 10 days of sowing. 3. Application of RDF. 4. Seed treatment with Imidacloprid 70 WS @ 10 g/kg seed for sucking pests. 5. Trap crop; one row of marigold and two rows of maize as a border crop. 6. Spraying of Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.2 ml/lit OR Acetamiprid 20 SP @ 0.2 g/lit OR Fipronyl 5 SC

@ 1.0 ml/ lit OR Oxydemeton methyl 25 EC @ 1.5 ml/lit for thrips management. 7. Spraying of Fenazaquin 10 EC @ 2 ml/lit OR Vertimec 1.9 EC @ 0.2 ml/lit OR Dicofol 18.5 EC @

2.5 ml/lit OR Wettable sulphur @ 3 g/lit for management of mites. 8. Spraying of Fenpropathrin 30 EC @ 0.5 ml/lit OR Diafenthurian 50 WP @ 1.0 g/lit when both thrips

and mites are noticed simultaneously at mild level. 9. Spraying of 100 LE HaNPV OR SlNPV or Spinosad 45 SC @ 0.12 ml/lit for management of fruit

borer. 10. Spraying Novaluron 10 EC @0.75ml/Lit for the management of defoliator Spodoptera litura.

Chilli with IPM strategies resulted in recording higher yield parameters which ultimately culminated in

higher yields (27.20 q/ha) compared to farmers practice (23.40q/ha). Economic analysis of the demonstration has shown that chilli grown by using IPM tools had incurred Rs. 34,500 per ha towards plant protection where as Rs. 39450 per ha was spent on plant protection measures in farmers practice. Moreover, the incidence of diseases was also comparatively less in IPM plots compared to Farmers Practice.

Economic analysis : Plots Yield/ha Gross returns/ha Total xpenditure/ha Net returns/ha

IPM 27.20 2,25,760 34,500 1,91,260

Farmers practice 23.40 1,94,220 39,450 1,54,770

It can be concluded that Chilli grown by using IPM tools helps in combating the pest menace effectively and realizes more net profit compared to farmers practice of plant protection.
